THE SECOND ANNUAL FORT BRAGG BLUES FESTIVAL: RAISING THE BAR WHILE JAMMING OUT The Fort Bragg Blues Festival returned for its second year, and we are proud to share that it was bigger, better, and more joyful than ever. What began as an ambitious idea has quickly become one of our community’s signature annual events, bringing together residents, visitors, musicians, and local businesses in celebration of music and coastal culture.

This year’s festival was held on the stunning Noyo Headlands, with our iconic coastline providing a breathtaking backdrop for two full days of blues performances. The setting alone made the event memorable, but it was the energy of our community: families, longtime locals, and visitors discovering Fort Bragg for the first time, that truly brought the festival to life.

One of our key goals this year was to ensure that the festival remained accessible and welcoming to all members of our community. We are especially proud of the free community concert at Bainbridge Park, which drew a wonderful turnout and created a relaxed, family‑friendly space for everyone to enjoy live music. Making sure that our local residents had access to the music and festivities has been a priority from the beginning, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped make that concert possible.

The continued growth of the Fort Bragg Blues Festival is a testament to our community’s spirit, creativity, and shared love of the arts. We extend our appreciation to the organizers, volunteers, City staff, performers, public safety partners, and the many local businesses who supported this event.

We look forward to building on this momentum and welcoming everyone back next year for an even more vibrant celebration on our beautiful coastline.

FORT BRAGG HOSTS THE REDWOOD EMPIRE DIVISION OF THE LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA CITIES

This month, the City of Fort Bragg had the privilege of hosting the Redwood Empire Division of the League of California Cities. We were proud to welcome city leaders, council members, mayors, and city managers from across Northern California and to showcase everything that makes Fort Bragg such a remarkable coastal community.

The day began at Town Hall, where the Legislative Committee convened. Our Council Members, Mayor, and City Manager joined colleagues from other cities to discuss current and upcoming state legislation and explore how future policy decisions may impact Northern California municipalities. These conversations provided an invaluable opportunity for shared problem‑solving, regional coordination, and deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing cities across our part of the state.

Following the committee meeting, the General Membership Meeting brought together representatives from throughout the Redwood Empire Division for updates, collaboration, and discussion of local initiatives. Fort Bragg’s leadership appreciated the chance to exchange ideas, learn from peer communities, and strengthen connections across the region.

In the evening, attendees transitioned to Noyo Harbor for a reception set against the backdrop of our working waterfront. The gathering allowed guests to enjoy the coastal views while continuing thoughtful conversations in a relaxed setting. The day concluded with dinner at The Wharf Restaurant, where visitors had the opportunity to experience one of Fort Bragg’s iconic harbor‑side dining destinations.

Throughout the event, guests were encouraged to explore lodging and recreation opportunities through Visit Fort Bragg, giving them a broader look at our natural beauty, local businesses, and community character.

We were honored to host the Redwood Empire Division and grateful for the opportunity to highlight our city while contributing to meaningful regional collaboration. Fort Bragg looks forward to continuing its active role in strengthening relationships and advocating for the needs of Northern California cities.

FIRST FRIDAY ENTERTAINMENT ZONES RETURN TO DOWNTOWN FORT BRAGG

Fort Bragg kicked off its First Friday Entertainment Zone season on May 1, 2026, and we are pleased to share that the first event brought a wonderful crowd to our downtown. The evening created a lively, walkable atmosphere and drew both residents and visitors into the heart of the city: an intentional effort to support our local businesses and strengthen downtown vitality.

Now that the season is underway, First Friday Entertainment Zones will continue throughout the summer, running from 5–9 PM on the first Friday of each month. Each event features a designated zone where adults 21+ can purchase to‑go beverages from participating bars and restaurants and enjoy them safely outdoors. Many of our shops are staying open late to welcome the increased foot traffic, creating a welcoming and connected experience for the community.

This May’s Entertainment Zone complemented the energy surrounding the Fort Bragg Blues Festival.

The festival drew many people to the coast, and we were glad to see attendees continue their evening in Downtown Fort Bragg, visiting shops, dining locally, and contributing to a vibrant start to the season.

Approved by the City Council as part of an ongoing effort to bring more life and walkability to downtown, the Entertainment Zone program continues to demonstrate its value. We look forward to a full summer of community connection, local business support, and fun Friday evenings in Downtown Fort Bragg.

PROCLAMATIONS Public Works

Mayor Jason Godeke and the entire City Council are proud to recognize May 17–23, 2026 as National Public Works Week here in Fort Bragg. We honor the incredible Public Works professionals whose skills and dedication keep our city thriving; from the engineering that shapes Fort Bragg’s character, to delivering the clean water we depend on, building the parks we enjoy, and maintaining the facilities our community uses every day.

These dedicated engineers, managers, and staff members work tirelessly behind the scenes to rebuild, maintain, and improve the infrastructure that supports us all. Their commitment helps ensure Fort Bragg remains a sustainable, resilient, and thriving place to live.

Water Safety Month The Fort Bragg City Council officially declared May 2026 as Water Safety Month!

As we head into summer, it’s the perfect time to focus on staying safe in and around the water.

Swimming and aquatic activities are a wonderful way to stay active, and enjoy our beautiful coast, but awareness and preparation are key to preventing water‑related injuries and drownings.

C.V. Starr Community Center is here to support families. It is never too late to learn how to swim or brush up on water safety. C.V. Starr offers a variety of swim lessons for all ages, and children in low‑income families may qualify for reduced‑cost or even free swim lessons.

Families interested in programs or financial assistance are encouraged to inquire directly at C.V. Starr. Let’s work together to keep our community safe, confident, and water‑smart this summer!

Commander Jonathan McLaughlin: 20 Year Recognition The Fort Bragg City Council proudly presented Commander Jonathan McLaughlin with a Mayor’s Letter and a commemorative plaque recognizing his 20 years of employment with the City of Fort Bragg and the City of Fort Bragg Police Dept.

Commander McLaughlin has dedicated two decades to serving our community: rising through the ranks from Temporary Police Services Technician, to Police Officer, Police Sergeant, and now Commander. His leadership, professionalism, and integrity have made a lasting impact on our city.

He has also continued to grow and excel, earning both his Intermediate and Advanced P.O.S.T. certifications, along with a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Services Management.

Known for his compassion, generosity, and steady guidance, Commander McLaughlin consistently steps up during challenging moments and supports both his fellow officers and our community with empathy and grace.

National Police Week The City of Fort Bragg proudly honors our current and former City of Fort Bragg Police Dept officers, along with all law enforcement partners who protect and serve our community.

We are deeply grateful for your courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of our residents. Your service makes our community stronger every day.

Councilmember Lindy Peters, on behalf of the entire Fort Bragg City Council, presented a proclamation honoring National Police Week (May 10–16) and Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15). We pause to remember and honor the peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and we hold their families and loved ones in our hearts.

Proclamation Declaring June Pride Month June is officially LGBTQIA2S+ Pride Month in Fort Bragg!

The Fort Bragg City Council officially proclaimed June 2026 as LGBTQIA2S+ Pride Month here in Fort Bragg. This month is a time to honor the contributions, strength, and vibrancy of our LGBTQIA2S+ community, and to reaffirm our city’s commitment to equality, inclusion, and respect for all.

Fort Bragg stands proudly with LGBTQIA2S+ residents, recognizing that our diversity enriches and strengthens our community. We encourage everyone to reflect on how we can continue to create a welcoming, supportive place where every person feels seen, valued, and safe.

Honoring the 30th Anniversary of Pacific Textiles Arts Mayor Jason Godeke proudly presented a proclamation celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pacific Textile Arts, one of Fort Bragg’s most cherished creative institutions!

In 1996, Jackie Wollenberg led the inspiring effort to purchase the beloved Victorian on Alger Street that would become the PTA campus.

Since then, co-founder Lolli Jacobsen and a dedicated team of volunteers have shaped it into a vibrant, welcoming home for textile arts on the Coast Today, Pacific Textile Arts is a fully volunteer-run nonprofit which offers: Monthly gallery exhibits An extensive catalogued textile library A major study collection A tapestry weaving studio A large classroom for workshops, events, and community gatherings

The City of Fort Bragg is pleased to announce that its new Accela Citizen Permit Portal is now LIVE and available to the public. This tool can be used for all Building, Planning, and Encroachment Permits!

Residents, contractors, architects, engineers, and business owners can now create an account, submit permit applications, upload documents, track application status, and manage permit-related activities online—anytime and from anywhere.

The new portal provides a streamlined, user-friendly experience designed to improve access to City services and make the permitting process more efficient and convenient.

PUBLIC SAFETY

COMMUNITY EVENT FACILITATION:

Walk and Bike to School Day The Fort Bragg Police Department had the pleasure of joining Redwood students for their Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day! Spending time with these amazing kids is always the highlight of our day.

We were proud to give away free helmets to help keep our young riders safe, and the energy was incredible as everyone came together for a fun parade, led by a fire truck with police officers ensuring a safe and smooth route for all.

Events like this remind us how important community, safety, and healthy habits are. Thanks to everyone who participated and made it such a great morning!

Fishing Clinic The Fort Bragg Police Department participated in the annual Mendocino Coast Police Activities League (PAL) Fishing Clinic, a community-based youth outreach event designed to foster positive relationships between young people and public safety professionals.

The fishing clinic welcomed children ranging from preschool age through fifth grade. Throughout the event, participants received hands-on instruction in a variety of fishing-related topics, including water and fishing safety, knot tying, fish habitats, casting techniques, fishing ethics, and proper equipment rigging. The program provided an engaging outdoor learning experience while promoting environmental stewardship, skill development, and responsible recreation.

PUBLIC SAFETY POLICE EVENTS

Public Safety Day at Big River Beach: The Police Department participated in the annual public safety day down at Big River Beach in Mendocino. This event gave students the opportunity to meet local first responders, ask questions, and get an upclose look at the equipment we use every day. Thank you to California State Parks for hosting another great event and to everyone who stopped by to say hello, ask questions, and support your local first responders.

Special Olympics Run: The Fort Bragg Police Department was honored to participate in the annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, joining law enforcement and public safety professionals from across the region in support of Special Olympics athletes and the organization's mission of inclusion, determination, and achievement. Thank you to all those attended and thank you to the incredible athletes who inspire our communities through their perseverance and accomplishments.

Frisbee Golf Program: In partnership with Noyo High School, the Police Department launched a pilot program introducing students to the sport of disc golf. The program was designed to strengthen positive relationships between students and law enforcement while providing participants with an opportunity to learn a new recreational activity, develop outdoor skills, and engage in healthy physical exercise.

PUBLIC SAFETY COLLEGE INTERNSHIP

Cassiti Baroni started this month as the Fort Bragg Police Department’s first college intern.

Born and raised in Fort Bragg, Cassiti recently completed her junior year at Campbell University, where she is a Division I softball player majoring in Criminal Justice. Over the next few months, she will rotate through our three divisions to gain hands-on experience in law enforcement.

Cassiti plans to pursue a career as a police officer after graduation, and we are excited to be part of her journey.

Public Works: Engineering

STORMWATER COMPLENCE: EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT The City is pleased to share that Assistant Director of Engineering, Chantell O’Neal, has officially earned her Qualified SWPPP Developer (QSD) certification—California’s highest professional credential for construction stormwater compliance. Chantell has held her Qualified SWPPP Practitioner (QSP) certification since 2018, completing a minimum six hours of professional development every year to stay current with evolving stormwater regulations. Earning the QSD was the natural next step, building on years of hands‑on experience with construction oversight, public infrastructure, and environmental compliance.

A QSD is responsible for designing the stormwater pollution prevention strategies that protect local waterways during construction activities. This certification ensures the City has in‑house expertise to develop and review SWPPPs, evaluate complex construction sites, and support our MS4 program by preventing sediment, debris, and pollutants from entering the storm drain system. In practical terms, it strengthens our ability to safeguard water quality, reduce regulatory risk, and implement best practices across City projects.

Her achievement reflects both personal dedication and the City’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and high‑quality public infrastructure.
