The Story of the Nutcracker The Nutcracker Suite was an adaptation of The Story of the Nutcracker and the Mouse King, written by E.T.A. Hoffmann. In 1891, Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky and the choreographer Lev Ivanov were commissioned to put it to music in the form of a ballet, and it played its opening performance in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892. It is now a classic performed throughout the world every holiday season.

Act I, Scene I The story of our Nutcracker begins on Christmas Eve in a small, quaint village. The first act opens in the lovely home of Dr. Stahlbaum, an official of the village. As is traditional, his family and children, Clara and Fritz, are busy and excited, preparing their home for an evening of festivities. Guests arrive bringing gifts for the parents and children. The Stahlbaums have retained additional staff to help with the holiday party, and they also join in the festivities. Many of Clara and Fritz’s young friends also arrive for the evening.

Presents are placed around the tree and the evening’s festivities begin.

The last guest to arrive is a fearsome looking, yet lovable man named Herr Drosselmeyer, who is a toy maker in the village. The family and friends are excited to see Herr Drosselmeyer.

Herr Drosselmeyer has brought gifts for the children, marionettes and music box dancers who, when wound, come to life and perform a charming dance.

Herr Drosselmeyer then gives Fritz his gift, but Fritz is not too happy with his gift. Herr Drosselmeyer’s gift to Clara is a beautifully hand-carved “Nutcracker” which both Clara and Fritz find charming and fascinating. As children will, the argument begins as to who will play with the Nutcracker doll. After a bit of teasing and taunting, Fritz finally takes the Nutcracker doll from Clara, and it falls to the ground and breaks. Dr. Stahlbaum and his wife send Fritz off to bed and Clara retrieves the broken Nutcracker doll, rocking it gently. The parents console Clara and also send her off to bed, where she goes, taking the Nutcracker with her.

The party is now coming to an end; there has been enough excitement for the evening. After the guests have departed, Dr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum have one last dance of their own and then retire for the night.

Act I, Scene II After all are asleep, Clara sneaks back downstairs with her Nutcracker doll.

She sits down on the sofa to savor the last bit of the evening’s festivities and falls into a very deep sleep and begins to dream.

In Clara’s dream, Herr Drosselmeyer reappears with fantastic magic.

He sprinkles his magic dust on the clock and it comes to life! He sprinkles his magic dust on the Christmas tree and it grows and grows. And the Nutcracker doll, which he covers with his magic powers, turns into a full sized captain whose own troops enter the room! Clara notices that the Captain looks amazingly like her Nutcracker doll—who could this really be?

The King Mouse looks at the Captain, the Captain looks at the King Mouse. Clara looks on in amazement; a battle is about to begin. A battle does follow and it seems it will be a losing battle for the Captain and his soldiers, but, in the final seconds of combat, Clara saves the Captain by striking the King Mouse with her pillow. The battle is won; the troops of the King Mouse remove him from the scene and the Captain’s soldiers disappear. Simultaneously, and magically, Herr Drosselmeyer reappears and the Captain is transformed into a handsome young Prince. Clara, too, is transformed in her dream, and she and the handsome Prince dance and depart on a journey into the Kingdom of Sweets.

Awaiting their arrival in the Land of Snow are the Ice Crystals. They display their excitement in the form of a dance, at the pending arrival of the Prince and Clara. Soon the royal couple arrives in a sleigh accompanied by Herr Drosselmeyer and the Ice Crystal Queen.

Act II The scene begins with the Royal Empress, Sugar Plum Fairy and the Snow Princess preparing for the arrival of the Prince and Clara. The sleigh appears and the Prince and Clara ascend the throne to take their place of honor, and a celebration begins in honor of the Prince having been saved by Clara. The ensemble of royal entertainers consists of the Dew Drop, a Spanish dancer, an exotic Arabian, Mama Giglione and her Polichinelles, the colorful Chinese dancers and exuberant Russians. Still more entertainment: a lovely Flute performs, and the Royal Guest follows with the Sugar Plum Fairy right after.

The celebration is coming to an end. What a wonderful evening it has been!

The Prince has decided to take Clara as his Princess. Herr Drosselmeyer, who has been observing the festivities, the Sugar Plum Fairy help with the crowning. The Prince and Clara celebrate with their own dance and skate the end of the Pas de Deux.

Such is the fun and beauty of fairytales. Where the Nutcracker Prince and Clara have gone, we shall never know as we are left to dream contentedly.

Haley Wint Haley Wint is a Senior at New Tier High School and has been skating since she was two years old. This year, Haley finished fourth at the upper Great Lakes regionals and qualified for the Midwestern Sectional Championships, where she placed tenth. Haley is looking forward to attending college next year, where she plans to study political science in the hopes of becoming the first female president.
