Waste Services Branches

Food and Yard Waste Weekly food and yard waste collection takes place on your regular refuse collection day, April 4 through December 8, 2022. There are two collection options: Food and yard waste cart (food and yard waste) As part of an expanded composting program, food scraps can “ride along” with grass clippings and leaves in food and yard waste carts. Order a cart at cityofevanston.org/yardwaste or call 311. Cost: $82.50 plus a $35 annual fee.

Yard waste bag with sticker (yard waste only) Yard waste only can also be disposed of in paper yard waste bags affixed with an Evanston yard waste sticker, available at the Levy Senior Center, Morton Civic Center and other locations. Cost: $2 each.

Food Waste by Collective Resource Compost Year-round composting is available through the City’s exclusive food scrap hauler, Collective Resource Compost, by visiting www.collectiveresource.us.

Recycling Dos and Don’ts Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to the landfill and decreases pollution. More at cityofevanston.org/recycling.

Tree trimming bundles must be affixed with a yard waste sticker. Branches should not exceed four inches in diameter or four feet in length.

Leaf blowers Gasoline-powered leaf blowers are allowed March 30 to May 15 and October 15 through the first Thursday of December on weekdays, 9am–5pm, and Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4pm. Leaf blowers are prohibited on City holidays.

Raking or blowing leaves into the streets is illegal, and can block sewers and cause flooding. Violators are subject to fines.

Beginning April 1, 2023, the use of gasoline- and propane-powered leaf blowers will be prohibited in Evanston.

Street and Alley Lights

As water from rain or melting snow travels over land or through the ground, it dissolves substances resulting from human activity, polluting local watersheds and Lake Michigan.

To report street light outages in your neighborhood, please contact 311.

Reducing Pollutants You can help safeguard our water by minimizing the discharge of pollutants from your property, such as vehicle oil and fuel drips, winter de-icing materials, fertilizers, and paints. Learn more at cityofevanston.org/stormwater-runoff.

Green Infrastructure Green inrastructure, such as rain barrels and rain gardens, helps reduce and treat stormwater at its source while delivering environmental, social and economic benefits. Learn about options for your property at cityofevanston.org/green.

Lead in Drinking Water The drinking water that the Evanston Water Utility delivers to the community contains no detectible lead. Lead can enter drinking water through corrosion of plumbing materials in the home. Homes built before 1986 are more likely to have pipes, fixtures and solder containing lead. Since 1992 the Evanston Water Utility has added a drinking water certified corrosion inhibitor called orthophosphate to the water. This compound reduces lead in many homes but does not eliminate it completely. The ultimate way to reduce lead in your water is to remove plumbing materials containing lead in and on your premises. Alley Maintenance Each year, starting in the spring, Evanston’s more than 300 unpaved alleys are periodically graded by the City. This is done to eliminate potholes and ruts caused by vehicles, weather and other factors. The process improves travel and reduces puddling. Scan the QR code for a 2022 alley maintenance schedule or visit cityofevanston.org/alleymaintenance.
