Message from the Barn

When I think about my role as a manager of a community center within the City of Eugene’s Recreation Division I keep coming back to the question—“What does our community need?” The answer is more than cool classes, fun camps and engaging events, always has been. In divisive times, times when money is tight (when is it ever not) and demands can feel all consuming, I am reminded that what nourishes me are the connections I have with people who care about me and who I care about. These connections mostly began in unforeseen ways through shared spaces and activities. One never knows the trajectory of a chance encounter. With that in mind, we at “The Barn” strive to provide spaces and activities that bring people together. Sometimes we play an important role in facilitating relationships, sometimes we just hold the space. In either case, our goal always is to strengthen our community through relationships. Say hello, share a story, tell us who you are and learn who we are. In so doing, we will all be more resilient.

If you’re walking by Petersen Barn on a Sunday morning, you might notice the building is abuzz. Step inside, and you’ll find dozens of people talking, sharing, celebrating and connecting, finding fellowship at the Emmaus Life Evangelical Free Church.

You’ll quickly meet Scott Lamb, the pastor at Emmaus. Meeting Scott is like meeting someone you’ve known your whole life. His easy manner, bright eyes, and soft enthusiasm seem to say ‘whoever you are, you’re already family.’ Emmaus Church’s mission is “Connecting Real People with Real Life” and that’s not far from Scott’s own mantra. “We think connection happens when you spend time with people,” he says. “The thing that

matters most is not that you would come to hang out at our church, but that you would feel cared about and loved.”

Scott and his wife moved to Eugene five years ago with intentions to start a church. Their vision was to create community of fellowship by building relationships, supporting great work and elevating the dreams of others. In everything he does, Scott prioritizes connection. “If someone were to come to me and say ‘How can I get involved with Emmaus?’ I would say, ‘When is the last time you talked to your neighbor?’” Scott quips. Scott and his church spend time every week creating relationships. In fact, in some weeks, spending time together, sharing stories, and talking to one another is the only item on Sunday’s agenda.

Scott will also be the first to tell you that his goal is not to create new programs or projects, but rather to support the work of those around him.

These acts could be simple, like helping to serve dinner at Petersen Barn’s Family Fun Night. Or they could be big,

Something people might not know about you: I'm an open book. I used to be very self-conscious and shy. Now, I can get a theater full of strangers to sing happy birthday to my son. I have learned to push myself to try new things.

“I really feel like a lifetime of faith is not built in a few big decisions, but in a bunch of really, really small incremental decisions over a lifetime,” he says. “Habitual acts of faithfulness will always outweigh singular acts of greatness.”

One thing is clear: the feeling of warmth, of fellowship, and of connecting with your community is never far from Scott’s path.

What you do for Pete Barn: I spent 7 amazing years working as an Activities Facilitator for REC ZONE located at Cascade Middle School. I have spent the last 2 years at Cesar Chavez as Site Lead and Activities Facilitator. During the summers of years gone by I worked at Monroe Park in the Fun For All program as Activities Facilitator for 3 years and as site lead for 2 years. I worked as an assistant to Kitty the Craft Queen for a couple of summers. Last year, for the summer I took on the position of Supply Coordinator. Organizing, Ordering, SHOPPING! More fun than should be legal. I am looking forward to many more years of working with the most amazing people EVER!

Your favorite part about your job: OMG! The people that I get to work with are truly awe inspiring. People from such diverse and colorful worlds. They have helped me grow and change in amazing ways.

Favorite Summer Activity: Who has time for summer?

You stumble upon a time machine. What year do you set it for, and why?: 1976 To spend one last year with my mom. My entire life change that year. I would like to experience innocence and happiness like when I was a child.

Teen Court Ages 13-17 Make a difference in your community through Teen Court. As a court member, you will gain experience in decision making, communication, law and ethics. You will give teen defendants an opportunity to take responsibility and regain a clean juvenile record. Junior Lifeguarding Ages 12-15 Introductory lifeguard training. Junior Lifeguards assist and train with lifeguards, attend staff meetings, and more. This program is a fun, educational and rewarding way to spend out of school time, and can result in future employment with the City. Must be qualified swimmers; Building Endurance level or higher. This course includes a summer season pass to all City of Eugene pools.
