Eugene Rec’s core values of “Adventure. Community. Happiness.” are evident in these pursuits. They’re words to live by.

The options are nearly endless in our little slice of the Willamette Valley, and inside this Rec Guide there’s a veritable choose-your-own-adventure of engaging activities for all ages.

Take the Spencer Butte Challenge Course, for example. The course is a proving ground for those looking for meaningful experiences. Groups experience customized programs led by professional staff trained to push boundaries, teach new skills and impart teamwork and social learning.

“The course,” Spencer Butte Challenge Course coordinator Robert Brack says, “is meant to teach people they’re capable of more than they realize.”

Program Information Classes & Activities These classes and activities are planned for people with disabilities, along with their families and friends. Courses are structured for different levels of ability to focus on training opportunities and/or for socialization. All Adaptive Rec courses require registration. A Participant Information Form is required prior to attendance. Fees do not include the cost of meals at events, unless noted otherwise. For more information call 541-682-5311.

Orientation Staff is available to discuss recreation opportunities. Please call for an interview prior to registering for classes. A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist can help answer your questions regarding the activities that are most appropriate for you, a family member or an individual in your care.

Youth Activities

Confidence learned in Rec takes her far Eugene Rec has taught Emma Silvers a great deal, though one of the most enduring benefits of her lifelong relationship with Rec is a boundless confidence and optimism that has allowed her to keep achieving her goals.

“Being able to handle six 5-year-olds, an angry parent and a kid with a bee allergy at one time? Everything else is easy,” Silvers, 22, said before graduating from the University of Oregon with a journalism degree in public relations.

Silvers, a 2012 graduate of South Eugene High School, grew up in Rec, starting off taking dance classes and attending yearly summer camps.

Then, when she turned 14, Silvers

started working in Rec as a counselor in training at Amazon Community Center. It wasn’t long before she was running programs.

Silvers applied the foundation and life skills learned in Rec to her college life with amazing results. She received a Ford Family Foundation scholarship that paid for 90 percent of her college expenses.

At the UO she dove right into student government, became the president of her sorority, worked with the Children’s Miracle Network, did work study with the Conduct and Discipline Office, was chosen to attend a prestigious program with LeadersShape and

Youth Swimming

1 Introductory Parent-Child ●

Ages 6 months+

No prerequisites. Parents and babies enjoy the water together. Parents receive safety tips and participate in songs and games to increase their child’s comfort in the water. Infants must wear elastic fitting reusable swim diapers; see page 20.

2 Advanced Parent-Child ●

Ages 18 months+

No prerequisites. Parents and babies work together in the water to develop important basic skills and build a foundation to comfortably participate in pre-school swim lessons. The class covers safety topics, songs, games, floating, kicking, arm strokes, and blowing bubbles. Infants must wear elastic fitting reusable swim diapers; see page 20.

3 Starfish ●

Ages 3-5

No prerequisites. This introductory class teaches students to submerge and safely participate while learning basic body positioning and swimming skills. Children attend lesson independently from parents; parents able to observe child’s lesson from spectator areas. No goggles please.

4 Otters ●

Ages 3-5

Prerequisites: Starfish; or participate independently in a class setting, jump in and submerge independently. Swimmers work on increasing comfort in the water, becoming independent, and confidently submerging. Skills focus on front kicks, glides, and extended independent floats. No goggles please.

5 Penguins ●

Ages 3-5

Prerequisites: Otters; or independently roll from front to back while kicking, demonstrate long reach front crawl arms.

Swimmers learn side-breathing and backstroke while increasing their stamina and swimming skills. Swimmers gain a better understanding of body positioning and movement in water and work on important safety skills.

6 Seals ●

Ages 3-5

Prerequisites: Penguins; or front crawl with side breathing for 5 cycles. Swimmers gain confidence and endurance while improving side-breathing, backstroke, and treading water skills. Students work in deeper water and are introduced to diving. Safety topics build on material from previous classes.

Orcas Ages 3-5 Prerequisites: Seals; or strong front crawl and backstroke 15 yards. Swimmers improve their front crawl and backstroke technique and are introduced to the basics of breaststroke and butterfly. Students comfortable in deep water continue to build confidence and endurance as they progress to swimming lengths and treading water.

Prerequisites: Fundamental Skills; or front crawl with side breathing (6 cycles) and backstroke (5 cycles). Students with front and back crawl experience will refine their stroke and build endurance. Swimming skills in deep water will be prac-​ ticed. Advanced body position techniques will also be practiced.

11 Building Endurance ●

Ages 6-10

Prerequisites: Deep Water Confidence; or front crawl & backstroke 15 yards and tread water for 2 minutes. For a more confident swimmer. Students will work on swimming a full length of the pool while perfecting and practicing front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke kick, and more.

12 Advanced Strokes ●

Ages 6-10

Prerequisites: Building Endurance; or front crawl and backstroke 25 yards. For the more advanced swimmer.

Students able to swim a full length of the pool will refine strokes and increase distances. This course creates the ability to continue swimming as a source of lifelong fitness.

13 Pre-Competitive Training ●

Ages 6-10

No prerequisites. For middle school-aged students of all skill levels. We’ll teach you where you’re at, be it a beginner with no experience or if you’re looking for skill refinement.

15 Introductory Teen/Adult ●

Ages 14+

No prerequisites. A gentle introduction for those who have either never been in a pool, are uncomfortable in the water, or never learned to swim. A safe and welcoming class with a qualified instructor who will help the participant set and achieve their goals.

16 Advanced Teen/Adult ●

Ages 14+

Prerequisites: Safe in deep water, able to swim about 50 yards continuously. Work with an experienced instructor to improve technique and develop stamina. Work on freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke, and possibly butterfly and backstroke. Swim etiquette, workout writing, and equipment are covered topics.

17 Private/Semi-Private ●

This class can help people with arthritis to exercise, reduce pain, and improve flexibility and strength. This fun class is taught in shallow water, and is excellent for those with general muscle or joint stiffness and/or chronic pain.

A water fitness and fat burning program for people working toward weight loss and toning. Work with floatation equipment for core stabilization, flexibility and range of motion in this fun, full-body workout. Work at your own pace.

Shallow Water Aerobics

Exercise to your desired intensity in deep water that provides both toning and cardiovascular work. Instructors will lead you through resistance exercises and abdominal work and help you have fun while staying fit.

Santiam Wagon Road – Mountain House Hike ➌ This path along the Santiam River was the main route across the Cascades from 1866 until the 1920s. Policies Minimum Class Requirements In order to recover program costs, a minimum number of participants are required. Please register early. Classes and activities will be cancelled between two and five days prior to the activity start date if the minimum number of participants have not registered.

If you register for an activity that cancels due to low enrollment, staff will notify you and issue a refund. For more about the withdrawal/refund policy, see below.

Withdrawal/Refund Policy

Withdrawals from recreation activities are subject to a withdrawal fee. A withdrawal fee of $10 will be charged for each registration under $100. A withdrawal fee of $25 will be charged for each registration $100 and higher.

A refund will be issued minus the withdrawal fee when requested at least seven (7) or more calendar days prior to the first activity meeting.

When a refund is requested six (6) or fewer calendar days prior to the first activity meeting or once a class or activity has started, a refund shall be issued only if:

• You move out of town.

• You are medically unable to participate.

• Department action requires cancellation of the activity (no withdrawal fee will be charged).

Refunds will be prorated for classes already attended.

No refund will be issued if you fail to show up for a registered activity, class or trip. No refund will be given for athletic

league fees and trips that require prepayment of advanced reservation tickets or admission fees.

Some activities require a non-refundable registration fee.

Release from Liability Agreement

With the exception of specific trips, City of Eugene Recreation Services does not provide medical insurance coverage for its participants. In consideration of the right to participate, each participant must acknowledge there are risks inherent in any kind of activity, and must agree to assume those risks on his/her own behalf, releasing and holding harmless the City, its officers or agents from all claims for injury or losses suffered from participation.

An additional Release from Liability Agreement, signed by the participant or guardian, may be required for participation in some activities.

Photographs, videos and audios of participants in Recreation Services programs may be used by the City of Eugene in any medium (e.g., print publications, Internet, etc.) for publicity purposes, without compensation or permission.

Registration and/or payment of any registration fee shall be deemed an admission of agreement to the terms stated above.

Scholarship Program

Eugene Rec offers a limited number of individual scholarships to City of Eugene residents.

Applications are available in June each year for the upcoming fiscal year (July1-June 30).

Large Print and Digital Recordings can be provided with advance notice. Five or fewer large print copies can be provided upon request.

Accessible Van with Wheelchair Lift is available for activities that provide van transportation. Please make your request

at the time of registration since demand for use is high. The van is booked on a first come, first serve basis.

Braille sections of large publications (such as this Recreation Guide) can be made available with advance notice.

Readers are available by phone or in person. A staff person will read the requested sections of publications for you.

Sign Language interpretation is available for classes or presentations with advance notice.

Hearing Assistance Equipment is available for classes, special events, and cultural performances with advance notice.

Adaptive Technology at the Library: 27” monitors, large keyboard letters, adjustable tables and screens, magnifying software, JAWS (computerized reader), and a Braille embosser.
