The more we can help you get out and discover what our city, county and state have to offer the better off our community is. That’s why within the 2017 Fall Rec Guide anyone will be able to find a trip, hike or program that helps them experience where they live in a different way.

Come to the pumpkin patch with us this fall on a great trip just for people with disabilities and take in the autumn colors while searching for the perfect pumpkin to carve back at Hilyard Community Center.

Or maybe join a trip through the River House Outdoor Center and head out into the Willamette National Forest to see the changing colors of the leaves.

Of course you could stay closer to home and join a painting class to create that perfect piece that could hang above your fireplace as the weather starts to cool. If fitness is your goal, Eugene Rec offers plenty of opportunities for you to become your best self.

Adaptive

Program Information Classes & Activities These classes and activities are planned for people with disabilities, along with their families and friends. Courses are structured for different levels of ability to focus on training opportunities and/or for socialization. All Adaptive Recreation courses require registration. A Participant Information Form is required before attendance. Fees do not include the cost of meals at events, unless otherwise noted.

Orientation Staff is available to discuss recreation opportunities. Please call for an interview before registering for classes. A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist can help answer your questions regarding the activities that are most appropriate for you, a family member or an individual in your care.

Conduct Every effort will be made to reasonably accommodate each individual, however, if a person’s conduct poses physical harm, risk to self or to others, he/she will be removed from City programs and activities.

We aim to provide individual and group services to support cycling interests and adaptive equipment needs for individuals of varying abilities and skill levels. 1 Introductory Parent-Child ●

Ages 6 months+

No prerequisites. Parents and babies enjoy the water together. Parents receive safety tips and participate in songs and games to increase their child’s comfort in the water. Infants must wear elastic fitting reusable swim diapers; see page 40.

2 Advanced Parent-Child ●

Ages 18 months+

No prerequisites. Parents and babies work together in the water to develop important basic skills and build a foundation to comfortably participate in pre-school swim lessons. The class covers safety topics, songs, games, floating, kicking, arm strokes and blowing bubbles. Infants must wear elastic fitting reusable swim diapers; see page 40.

3 Starfish ●

Ages 3-5

No prerequisites. This introductory class teaches students to submerge and safely participate while learning basic body positioning and swimming skills. Children attend lesson independently from parents; parents able to observe child’s lesson from spectator areas. No goggles please.

4 Otters ●

Ages 3-5

Prerequisites: Starfish; or participate independently in a class setting, jump in and submerge independently. Swimmers work on increasing comfort in the water, becoming independent, and confidently submerging. Skills focus on front kicks, glides, and extended independent floats. No goggles please.

5 Penguins ●

Ages 3-5

Prerequisites: Otters; or independently roll from front to back while kicking, demonstrate long reach front crawl arms.

Swimmers learn side-breathing and backstroke while increasing their stamina and swimming skills. Swimmers gain a better understanding of body positioning and movement in water and work on important safety skills.

6 Seals ●

Ages 3-5

Prerequisites: Penguins; or front crawl with side breathing for five cycles. Swimmers gain confidence and endurance while improving side-breathing, backstroke and treading water skills. Students work in deeper water and are introduced to diving. Safety topics build on material from previous classes.

Orcas Ages 3-5 Prerequisites: Seals; or strong front crawl and backstroke 15 yards. Swimmers improve their front crawl and backstroke technique and are introduced to the basics of breaststroke and butterfly. Students comfortable in deep water continue to build confidence and endurance as they progress to swimming lengths and treading water.

No prerequisites. Students learn to be comfortable in the water

Prerequisites: Beginner class; or independently enter water and bob to safety and independently front glide. Students who are comfortable in the water will learn introductory front and back crawl with focus on body position and buoyancy.

10 Deep Water Confidence ●

Ages 6-10

Prerequisites: Fundamental Skills; or front crawl with side breathing (six cycles) and backstroke (five cycles). Those with front and back crawl experience will refine their stroke and build endurance. Swimming skills in deep water will be prac-​ ticed. Advanced body position techniques will also be practiced.

11 Building Endurance ●

Ages 6-10

Prerequisites: Deep Water Confidence; or front crawl & backstroke 15 yards and tread water for two minutes. For a more confident swimmer. Students will work on swimming a full length of the pool while perfecting and practicing front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke kick and more.

12 Advanced Strokes ●

Ages 6-10

Prerequisites: Building Endurance; or front crawl and backstroke 25 yards. For the more advanced swimmer.

Students able to swim a full length of the pool will refine strokes and increase distances. This course creates the ability to continue swimming as a source of lifelong fitness.

13 Pre-Competitive Training ●

Ages 6-14

Prerequisites: Advanced Strokes; or front crawl and backstroke 50 yards. Class focused on the four strokes used in competition. Learn starts, turns and information to prepare you to enter the exciting world of competitive swimming.

14 Middle School ●

Ages 11-13

No prerequisites. For middle school-aged students of all skill levels. We’ll teach you where you’re at, be it a beginner with no experience or if you’re looking for skill refinement.

15 Introductory Teen/Adult ●

Ages 14+

No prerequisites. A gentle introduction for those who have either never been in a pool, are uncomfortable in the water, or never learned to swim. A safe and welcoming class with a qualified instructor who will help the participant set and achieve their goals.

16 Advanced Teen/Adult ●

Ages 14+

Prerequisites: Safe in deep water, able to swim about 50 yards continuously. Work with an experienced instructor to improve technique and develop stamina. Work on freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, and possibly butterfly and backstroke. Swim etiquette, workout writing, and equipment are covered topics.

17 Private/Semi-Private ●

Ages 3-adult

One-on-one private lessons give swimmers individual attention. For semi-private group lessons, please contact staff.

Echo Hollow Pool

Eugene Rec has a 30-year vision for its parks and recreation facilities, and Echo Hollow Pool plays a big part in it. The Bethel area pool opened in 1969 and has now exceeded its expected lifespan. In a growing neighborhood, the call for a pool that has fun features like a slide and spray play area has grown.

A remodel to replace failing systems and improve energy efficiency would ensure continued operation for decades to come.

The class incorporates low-impact cardio, core training, muscular endurance and bone strengthening. Accessibility Services The City of Eugene Recreation Services Division strives to make recreational opportunities available to everyone. The City is committed to supporting the Americans with Disabilities Act. The following services are available with advance notice. Some requests may take up to two weeks to secure.

Inclusion Services help identify accommodations that can be made to ensure Recreation programs are accessible to, and usable by all people, including those with disabilities.

Large Print and Digital Recordings can be provided with advance notice. Five or fewer large print copies can be provided upon request.

Accessible Van with Wheelchair Lift is available for activities that provide van transportation. Please make your request

at the time of registration since demand for use is high. The van is booked on a first come, first serve basis.

Braille sections of large publications (such as this Recreation Guide) can be made available with advance notice.

Readers are available by phone or in person. A staff person will read the requested sections of publications for you.

Sign Language interpretation is available for classes or presentations with advance notice.

Hearing Assistance Equipment is available for classes, special events, and cultural performances with advance notice.

Adaptive Technology at the Library: 27” monitors, large keyboard letters, adjustable tables and screens, magnifying software, JAWS (computerized reader), and a Braille embosser.

Policies Minimum Class Requirements In order to recover program costs, a minimum number of participants are required. Please register early. Classes and activities will be canceled between two and five days before the activity start date if the minimum number of participants have not registered.

If you register for a canceled activity because of low enrollment, staff will notify you and issue a refund. For more about the withdrawal/refund policy, see below.

Withdrawal/Refund Policy

Withdrawals from recreation activities are subject to a withdrawal fee. A withdrawal fee of $10 will be charged for each registration under $100. A withdrawal fee of $25 will be charged for each registration $100 and higher.

A refund will be issued minus the withdrawal fee when requested at least seven (7) or more calendar days before the first activity meeting.

When a refund is requested six (6) or fewer calendar days before the first activity meeting or once a class or activity has started, a refund shall be issued only if: • You move out of town.

• You are medically unable to participate.

• Department action requires cancellation of the activity (no withdrawal fee will be charged).

Refunds will be pro-rated for classes already attended.

No refund will be issued if you fail to show up for a registered activity, class or trip. No refund will be given for

athletic league fees and trips that require prepayment of advanced reservation tickets or admission fees.

Some activities require a non-refundable registration fee.

Release from Liability Agreement

With the exception of specific trips, City of Eugene Recreation Services does not provide medical insurance coverage for its participants. In consideration of the right to participate, each participant must acknowledge there are risks inherent in any kind of activity and must agree to assume those risks on his/her own behalf, releasing and holding harmless the City, its officers or agents from all claims for injury or losses suffered from participation.

An additional Release from Liability Agreement, signed by the participant or guardian, may be required for participation in some activities.

Photographs, videos and audio of participants in Recreation Services programs may be used by the City of Eugene in any medium (e.g., print publications, social media, etc.) for publicity purposes, without compensation or permission.

Registration and/or payment of any registration fee shall be deemed an admission of agreement to the terms stated above.

Scholarship Program

Eugene Rec offers a limited number of individual scholarships to City of Eugene residents.

Applications are available in June each year for the upcoming fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

We create transformative experiences that build social connections and enhance the health, happiness and livability of our community. We couldn’t do it without the partnerships of more than 150 local organizations. Whether it’s donating building space to the Boys and Girls Club, supporting Oregon Country Fair’s youth Culture Jam or helping maintain Eugene public school athletic fields, we’re all in this together.

The Parks and Recreation System Plan aims to continue these crucial relationships. The community has said they want us to create more connections and build better partnerships, whether that be forging new ones or reinventing old ones across the board – from community health and social services to education, the arts and economic development.
