Social Gatherings

Black History Walking Tour of Eugene’s Downtown

Join us for a 2.8-mile walking tour through downtown Eugene, led by former Downtown Ambassador and AIC Human Rights & Equity Analyst Jarret Anderson. Explore the rich and often overlooked history of Eugene’s Black community, beginning at Alton Baker Park – once home to Lane County’s irst African American community. From there, we’ll make stops throughout the city center, including Rosa Parks Plaza at Lane Transit District’s downtown station, before concluding at the historic Eugene Depot. You’ll gain insight into what it was like for Black residents to live and work in Eugene from the early 1900s through the 1940s, a time when Oregon’s exclusion laws sought to prohibit Black people from living in the state. Despite these challenges, many people persevered, leaving inspiring legacies that continue to shape the city today.
