A Banner Year for Elk Grove Vets New Military Banner Program Honors Hometown Heroes

An estimated 9,000 veterans call Elk Grove home. To honor those residents who served in the United States Armed Forces, the Elk Grove City Council recently approved the creation of a Military Street Banner Program. Making their debut the week of Veterans’ Day, the banners will adorn streetlights along Elk Grove Boulevard and Civic Center Drive between Big Horn Boulevard and Laguna Springs Drive. Those eligible for the program include retired or honorably discharged members of the United States Armed Forces who reside in Elk Grove, or resided in Elk Grove and are now deceased.

Applications will be accepted year-round and banners honoring local service members will be displayed for a year. Retired banners will be given to the honoree or their family. Businesses or individuals may sponsor a military street banner honoring a veteran for a $150 donation.

Take Light Rail to Golden 1 Center Events

Extra trains will be added on event nights. Light Rail will run one hour post event.

Planning to go to an event or Kings home game at the new Golden 1 Center? Let Sacramento Regional Transit (RT) do the driving! Take a discounted Uber or Lyft ride or park at the Franklin Station (at Franklin and Cosumnes River Boulevards) and hop on a light rail train that will deliver you within one block of the Golden 1 Center. RT will have extended light rail service after major events and games—taking you back to your car.

Plan ahead and purchase your round-trip pass in advance. Download Sacramento RT’s mobile fare app, RideSacRT, from the App Store or Google Play. Up to four people can ride on a Group Pass for only $14 with a valid Golden 1 Center event ticket, or a single ride ticket is only $2.75 each way. Discount fare applies to persons who are eligible.

Elk Grove Food Bank Services Annual Turkey Drive Help a struggling family this Thanksgiving. The Elk Grove Food Bank Services is collecting turkeys and all the trimmings for local families.

Your donation will help the Food Bank reach its goal of providing 1,000 Thanksgiving meals to families this year.

Your locally purchased gifts allow you the chance to win prizes, support local retailers, and give money (through tax dollars) back to the City. Each year the City partners with the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce and local merchants to host Holiday Shop Elk Grove. Elk Grove Veterans Day Parade November 11

Honor those who have selflessly served our nation during Elk Grove’s 16th Annual Veterans Day Parade. Parade events start at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony at the Elk Grove Shopping Center, 9108 Elk Grove Florin Road.

The parade will proceed south on Elk Grove Florin Road at 11 a.m. and end at Elk Grove Regional Park. Streets will be closed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for this event.

Enjoy unique shopping, sample holiday food, hear Victorian carolers, and get a photo with Santa at the Dickens Street Faire. If you crave additional holiday cheer, finish the day with the Parade of Lights.

Lighted floats, bands, and holiday sparkle is what you’ll see during the annual nighttime Parade of Lights. Want to join in? Grab your holiday lights and deck out your car, bike, stroller, or apparel (just register in advance). Beginning at 6 p.m., the route makes its way along Elk Grove Florin Road to Elk Grove Boulevard. The parade ends at Walnut Avenue where you can enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies while watching the holiday tree lighting ceremony.

Maintain Your Drain

Help prevent streets and homes from flooding—be prepared during storm season! Here are some things to keep in mind: • Keep storm drains clear of leaves and debris—never wash debris down the drain.

• Place leaves and other yard debris in your green waste container—not in the street.

• Have more green waste than container space?

Call Republic Services at 635-2500 to request an additional cart; residents can have up to 3 green waste carts without additional charge. Green waste can also be taken to the Recycle Area at the Special Waste Collection Center (9255 Disposal Lane) free of charge.

Report a clogged storm drain or storm water drainage problem by calling the Public Works 24-hour hotline at 687-3005.

A Treasure Trove in Elk Grove Winter Show and Sale November 5 – December 28

Select that unique small treasure at the Small Treasures Winter Show and Sale at Elk Grove Fine Arts Center, 9080 Elk Grove Boulevard.

Santa and his elves are teaming up with the Cosumnes Fire Department (CSD) and the Elk Grove Police Department to host a series of parades around town. Firefighters, police officers, and volunteers will escort Santa and his entourage through neighborhood streets with a convoy of antique and modern emergency vehicles decorated for the holidays.

Your generous toy donation will bring a smile to a child’s face on Christmas morning. The Elk Grove Police and Cosumnes Fire Departments are collecting new, unwrapped toys during the month of November. Hand in your gift during the Santa & Sirens Parade or drop off your donation at the police station, City Hall, fire stations, or participating businesses in Elk Grove.

Weather permitting, each parade will begin and end at the listed fire station and travel through neighborhoods on the designated date.

Have you heard about Measure B?

The Road Maintenance and Traffic Relief Act of 2016, or Measure B, is a half-cent transportation sales tax that will appear on the November ballot. If approved by voters, Measure B is expected to raise approximately $3.6 billion over 30 years to repave streets, repair aging roads and bridges, fund highway, connector and interchange projects, and support maintenance, security, and expansion of transit services in the Sacramento region. In order to take effect, Measure B must be approved by two-thirds of voters this fall.

Remove trees from stands.

Remove ornaments, lights, tinsel, and metal rod supports from trees.

Place your tree* curbside next to your green waste container by 6 a.m. during the week of January 2, or January 16. OR, Take your tree of any size, free of charge, to either the Special Waste Collection Center (9255 Disposal Lane, Elk Grove) or Elder Creek Transfer and Recovery Station (8642 Elder Creek Road, Sacramento).

Artificial, flocked, or “live” trees with root balls will not be accepted.

*Trees taller than 6 feet must be cut into 3-foot or shorter pieces and placed in your green waste container. Please ensure pieces fit completely with the lid closed.

The Special Waste Collection Center will be closed on Sunday, 12/25 and Monday 12/26 and Sunday, 1/1.
