Elk Grove Named California’s Best Place to Live
There’s a lot to celebrate in Elk Grove. A new study from Livability has ranked Elk Grove as the No. 1 best place to live in California and No. 6 overall in the Western U.S., highlighting the city’s strong quality of life and community appeal.
The rankings evaluated key factors such as economy, housing, cost of living, amenities, transportation, environment, safety, education, and health. Elk Grove stood out for its more than 100 parks, diverse dining options, and high-performing schools—making it an attractive place for both families and young professionals.
The report also pointed to the presence of major employers like Apple and Kaiser Permanente as contributors to the city’s economic strength. Additional recognition came from Niche, which awarded Elk Grove an “A” for outdoor activities and public schools, and an “A+” for diversity and weather.
The recognition reinforces what residents already know: Elk Grove is a vibrant, welcoming community and a great place to call home thanks to the efforts of our residents and partner agencies including Cosumnes Community Services District and Elk Grove Unified School District.

More than 31,000 people age 62 and older are estimated to live in Elk Grove. That’s about 17% of the City’s population. With many seniors on a fixed income, the City and SacRT have launched a new Seniors Ride Fare Free pilot program.
This program – the first of its kind in the region -- will allow Elk Grove seniors to ride SacRT bus routes in Elk Grove and commuter routes to Sacramento fare-free. It’s a simple but meaningful step to help our seniors stay connected to healthcare, shopping, and community activities.
Ready to ride? If you’re 62 or older, present your government-issued Identification Card, Driver’s License, or other valid identification to show proof of age and Elk Grove residence to the bus driver to have your fare waived. Transit passes are optional, but also available at City Hall or District56 during normal business hours.

Have You Been to the Bike Park?
The Elk Grove Bike Park, located within Elk Grove Park, is one of Elk Grove’s most unique recreation spots. The park is designed for all skill levels with berms, pump tracks, and dirt jumps that challenge experienced riders while remaining approachable for beginners.
Whether you’re practicing BMX tricks, improving mountain biking skills, or simply learning how to navigate the course, the bike park offers a fun and active way to enjoy the outdoors and connect with other riders.
Open daily from sunrise to one hour after sunset, the Elk Grove Bike Park is a great place to ride, learn, and make the most of Bike Month.

Help Shape Safer Travel During Extreme Heat
As temperatures rise, the City is developing a Heat Ready Mobility Plan to keep people moving safely and comfortably—even on the hottest days. This effort will look at how heat impacts roads, transit, sidewalks, and bike routes, and identifies ways to make everyday travel more resilient.
We’ve crafted a quick survey to hear about where heat makes it hardest to get around—whether it’s a bus stop without shade, a long stretch of sidewalk with no tree cover, or a route that feels unsafe during extreme temperatures. Your feedback will help prioritize improvements like shaded transit stops, cooler walking and biking routes, and better access to air-conditioned transportation. It also strengthens the City’s ability to secure funding for these upgrades.

Murals to Bring New Energy and Identity to Elk Grove’s Historic District
Elk Grove continues to invest in creating places that are not only functional, but memorable. In June, Elk Grove’s Historic District will be transformed into a more vibrant, welcoming, and visually engaging destination as a series of new murals take shape along Main Street from Highway 99 to Waterman Road.
A partnership between the City and nationally acclaimed mural creators, Talking Walls, is introducing large-scale public art to this corner of the city to celebrate community identity, spark creativity, and enhance the character of the district. More than just colorful additions, these murals are part of a broader placemaking effort—turning everyday spaces into meaningful places where people gather, connect, and explore. As the murals come to life, Main Street will evolve into an open-air gallery—one that invites people to linger a little longer, discover something new, and see familiar spaces in a different way.

Activities will include a guided mural tour at Old Town Plaza from 9-10:30am and a Local Artist Battle from 4-8pm.

Good news! There’s a new affordable apartment community opening later this year and applications will soon be available through a public lottery.
Pardes II, located on 8335 Tarak Drive, will feature 140 apartment homes with one-, two-, and three-bedroom options. The community is close to schools, parks, grocery stores, and healthcare services, making it a convenient place to call home. Residents will also have access to a community room, play area, and on-site laundry.
To be eligible, households must earn no more than 70% of the Area Median Income for Sacramento County.
The lottery closes May 20 at 11:59 p.m. Apply online at elkgrove.gov/rent/pardes.

Protect Your Home Before Fire Season Starts
Creating and maintaining defensible space around buildings is one of the most effective ways to protect homes, neighborhoods, and firefighters. Even in suburban neighborhoods, wind-driven embers can travel more than a mile ahead of a wildfire and ignite dry leaves, mulch, or other vegetation around homes. Routine yard maintenance can play a critical role in reducing the local fire risk.
The Cosumnes Fire Department asks residents to protect their homes and neighborhoods by completing the following steps before peak fire season:
• Remove dry leaves, dead plants, fallen branches, and weeds from your yard and around structures.
• Maintain at least 30 feet of defensible space around buildings and along property lines.
• Keep at least 10 feet of clearance around propane tanks, solar panels, generators, and electrical equipment.
• Properties 2 acres or larger must have weeds and vegetation cleared across the entire parcel.
• Maintain grass at no taller than 2 inches throughout fire season.
Taking action now helps reduce wildfire risk and keeps the Elk Grove community safer throughout the dry season.
