Sizes range from infant to adult XL and can be borrowed for the day or the entire weekend. Before you hit the water, stop by one of the following Cosumnes Fire Stations for a loaner life jacket: Fire Station 71 (8760 Elk Grove Blvd.) or 75 (2300 Maritime Dr.).

Heavy winter rains caused the weeds to grow like crazy, but the City’s new maintenance crew—1,000 goats—are ready to eat away this wildfire risk.

Beginning July 1, the herd will clear about two to four acres per day around the areas of Strawberry Creek, Elk Grove Creek, Laguna Creek and Stonebrook. Two days prior to their arrival, temporary fencing will be installed. Their work is expected to be completed by September 15. This program offers a natural, safe way to reduce fire danger around local creeks and large parcels.

As an added bonus, your kid will get a kick out of seeing them!

It’s Time to Battle the Mosquitoes!

The wet winter and warm days created the perfect breeding conditions for mosquitoes, and these blood-thirsty “little flies” are out in large numbers—increasing the threat of West Nile virus (a disease transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito). Protect yourself from the pesky insects by following these tips: •

Check your yard at least once a week and dump water that accumulates in flower pots, fountains, toys, pet dishes, cans, bird baths, tires, wheel barrows, and other containers.

Use your green waste container to dispose of street gutter debris and refrain from overwatering your lawn. Mosquitoes can reproduce in wet areas and clogged street gutters.

Stock ornamental ponds, fountains, and animal water troughs with mosquitofish (these little fish feed on mosquito larvae!). Get yours delivered to your home—FREE! Drain water from pool, spa, and boat covers.

Dress in long sleeves and pants and/or wear an effective mosquito repellent (especially around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active). Insect repellents should contain DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

While you do your part in the fight, The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District does theirs through programs including spraying and virus surveillance (testing dead birds and mosquito samples).

Neighborhoods throughout Elk Grove will join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the annual National Night Out crime prevention event. Take a stand against crime and show that it will not be tolerated! Lock your doors, turn on your outside lights, and join your neighbors and police on your street.

30th Annual Strauss Festival

The Wonderful Island of Oz July 27 through 30 Elk Grove Regional Park

Gather your friends and family, spread a blanket on the lawn at Strauss Island, and be swept away into “The Wonderful Island of Oz.” This FREE Wizard of Oz-inspired dance production is set to music by the family of Austrian composer Johann Strauss and played by a live orchestra.

Enjoy food and drink while watching the show—bring your own picnic or purchase food from licensed vendors (including wine and beer). Alcoholic beverages may be purchased during this event but are not allowed to be brought into the park. Parking is available for $10, which supports this free festival. Reserve paid bleacher seating online at www.straussfestival.com.

The promenade begins at 7:30 p.m., the show begins at 8:15 p.m., and fireworks and pyrotechnic display marks the spectacular closing at 10 p.m.
