Get out and mingle with your neighbors and the hardworking officers of the Elk Grove Police Department during the 33rd annual crime prevention event called National Night Out. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., neighborhoods and police departments in Elk Grove and across the nation are teaming up to host block parties with everything from barbecues and bounce houses to potlucks and snow cones. It’s a wonderful opportunity to promote police/community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie. By bringing us together to confront the pervasive problems of crime, drugs, and violence, National Night Out helps cultivate the spirit and determination necessary to make our neighborhoods safer and our communities stronger. City Utility Box is Now Under the Sea
The utility box located in front of Bubbles Car Wash at Bond Road and Highway 99 has been visually transformed into an underwater escape. Part of the City’s Utility Box Beautification Pilot Program, the makeover was created by local artist Kelly Croisdale. Thanks to the Committee for the Arts, Sherwin Williams, and the Elk Grove Artists organization for bringing us all a little closer to the sea. The four other utility boxes that are part of this program will be featured in future newsletter editions.

Make a Connection with Community Protection, Introducing PD in the Park!
You may start to notice a police presence in area parks, but that doesn’t mean something is wrong—in fact, it’s good. As part of a focused effort to connect law enforcement with the community, the Elk Grove Police Department and Cosumnes Community Services District have partnered to bring you the year-round PD in the Park program. Police officers will be visiting area parks to meet residents, answer questions, and have a little fun. At PD in the Park, you can shoot some hoops, play some catch, get some cool stuff, or just hang out with the Elk Grove PD. Key to the City-An Ancient Honor in the Modern World
With roots going back over 1,000 years, “the key to a city” is recognized in many cultures as the highest honor a City can bestow, and Elk Grove is no different. This symbolic gesture, awarded by our Mayor on behalf of the City Council, is presented to an individual or entity in one or more of several categories. Examples include acts of heroism performed within our city limits; a resident reaching the age of 100 years or more; acts of exemplary public, civic, military, or humanitarian service; and remarkable athletic accomplishments or contributions. Unlike medieval times, any Elk Grove resident can nominate a deserving individual or entity for this honor. Recognizing City Employees for a Decade of Dedication

On July 1, 115 City employees will celebrate 10 years of service to the City. Nearly two-thirds of these men and women started their careers with the City upon the establishment of Elk Grove’s own Police Department in 2006. As we continue to mature as a City, we are thankful to all of our City staff for their dedication to serving Elk Grove’s residents and keeping our community a safe and beautiful place to live, work, and play.

Community Identifies Top Priorities for Essential City Services
Residents who participated in the Quality of Life Service Priorities and Needs in Elk Grove survey identified a handful of top priorities for essential city services. Priorities include reducing crime, maintaining rapid police response times, attracting and retaining local businesses, fixing potholes, and maintaining city streets. The City is considering this feedback and will continue to update residents as it works to address these quality of life service needs and priorities into the future. Gather a blanket, some lawn chairs, and your friends and family and be enchanted by the beautiful princess who is awakened from a deep slumber by the handsome prince. This FREE Snow White-inspired production will delight the young and the old with graceful dancing, lovely costumes, classical music, and a grand fireworks finale. Enjoy food and drink while watching the show—bring your own or purchase from licensed vendors (including wine and beer). No personal alcoholic beverages are allowed to be brought into the park. Parking is $10, which supports this free festival. Reserved bleacher seating packages can be purchased at straussfestival.com. The promenade begins at 7:30 p.m., the show begins at 8:15 p.m., and a fireworks display at 10 p.m. marks the spectacular closing. You Could Be a Cover Model! 2017 Town Planner Photo Contest Now Open
The City and Town Planner Calendar are once again teaming up to host a cover photo contest on Instagram. Submit your entries through Instagram anytime now through August 17 using the hashtag #EGTownPlanner17. The winner will receive $100 and their image will be used on the cover of the 2017 Elk Grove Town Planner Calendar, which will be distributed to addresses in Elk Grove this December. 4
