ELK GROVE’S HOMELESSNESS STRATEGY IS WORKING.

Next Steps: Choosing a Permanent Shelter Location Building on the success of the City’s temporary year-round shelter at 9499 East Stockton Boulevard, Elk Grove is moving forward with plans to develop a permanent homeless shelter to better serve residents experiencing homelessness. The temporary shelter and the City’s updated camping ordinance have delivered measurable community benefits including:

• A 65 percent reduction in homeless encampments citywide over the past year • A safe, stable environment where individuals can sleep, eat, and access essential services • Individualized case management, including employment assistance, behavioral health services, and transportation to medical and service appointments • Dozens of individuals successfully transitioned off the streets and connected to longer-term or permanent housing solutions Together, these results underscore the effectiveness of Elk Grove’s proactive and compassionate approach and provide a strong foundation for investing in a permanent shelter that continues to meet both individual and community needs. The future shelter will provide accommodations and services for up to 20 adults and up to 4 families. The space will include an additional 5 emergency beds. Pet companions will be welcomed.

Nominate a Star of Service Do you know an individual or organization making Elk Grove a better place? Don’t miss your chance to recognize their efforts through the 2026 Stars of Service Volunteer Awards! This annual award celebrates the incredible volunteers whose dedication improves our community’s quality of life. Nominate those who inspire you. Review the award categories and submit your nomination online before February 27 at elkgrove.gov/starsofservice.

Like the temporary shelter, the permanent shelter will accept guests by referral only. Walk-ins will not be permitted. The shelter will only serve individuals with a connection to Elk Grove. Meals and services will only be provided to shelter guests. An extensive search over the past several months has been narrowed to 3-4 possible locations. These locations will be evaluated with the community before being presented to the City Council for final consideration. Attend a Community Meeting Learn more about the proposed sites, shelter operations, and how this project can support community needs. Four meetings have been scheduled. Each meeting will feature the same format and content. Choose the date and time that works best for your schedule. Wednesday, January 21 OR Tuesday, January 27 3:00 - 4:45pm OR 6:00 - 7:45pm

Free CPR Clinics: Learn to Save a Life in 10 Minutes According to the American Heart Association, nearly seven out of every 10 U.S. adults wouldn’t feel confident to act during a cardiac emergency. Yet, it takes just 10 minutes to learn how to help keep someone alive until paramedics arrive. The Cosumnes Fire Department is offering free, drop-in Hands-Only CPR clinics at local fire stations. The training focuses on those first few critical minutes following a cardiac arrest when quick action can truly make the difference between life and death. The sessions are open to the public, require no prior experience, and are a great way to learn an essential life-saving skill. Just bring your willingness to make a difference! Classes are offered on the last Saturday of the month, January through May, at rotating fire stations. Find details at CosumnesCSD.gov/CPR.

A Clean Sweep Starts with You Clean streets don’t happen by accident. They happen with teamwork. Elk Grove’s street sweeping program helps remove debris, leaves, and litter from roadways before they can clog storm drains or wash into local waterways. But sweepers can only do their job effectively when streets are clear. When cars are parked along the curb during scheduled sweeping days, equipment must navigate around them, leaving behind debris and reducing the overall efficiency of the process. A few small changes like parking in a driveway or garage on sweep days makes a big difference in the appearance and environmental health of our community. Not sure when City sweepers visit your neighborhood? Visit the City’s online street sweeping map to find your address, view your service schedule, and set reminders at elkgrove.gov/streetsweeping.

Then / Now

Then & Now: Bob’s Club is a Landmark of Community Spirit Every building has a history and 9039 Elk Grove Boulevard stands as one of the oldest and most beloved buildings in Historic Main Street. Known today as Bob’s Club, this two-story, wood-frame building has been a gathering place for nearly 150 years.

Originally constructed in 1876 as the Elk Grove Hotel, the building quickly became a hub where locals gathered to socialize and listen to baseball on the radio, a tradition that continues in spirit today.

The building also holds a remarkable story of survival. In July 1892, a fire sparked by a passing train destroyed most of the west side of town. Only two commercial buildings endured the flames, one of them was the Elk Grove Hotel, later to become Bob’s Club.

Drive Sober. Remember Ty. Protect Our Community.

Free Dog Spay & Neuter Appointments Return in 2026

January marks a meaningful and emotional reminder about the consequences of impaired driving. Four years ago, Elk Grove Police Officer Ty Lenehan was tragically killed by a wrong-way impaired driver on Highway 99. His loss deeply impacted the Police Department, his family, and the Elk Grove community — and it continues to reinforce why driving sober is a shared responsibility.

Elk Grove Animal Services is expanding access to affordable pet care with the return of free dog spay and neuter appointments beginning January 2026. This special program is available for Elk Grove residents who are enrolled in qualifying assistance programs, including EBT/SNAP, EAPR (SMUD), or ESA (PG&E). For a limited time, eligible dog owners can schedule surgeries at no cost.

This month, Elk Grove Police Department officers and staff will proudly wear a DUI Awareness patch or lapel pin created in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) California to honor Officer Lenehan and all victims of impaired driving. The design serves as a tribute to Ty’s life and dedication to public safety — and as a powerful visual reminder that impaired driving destroys lives.

To participate, dogs must be 7 years old or younger and weigh between 5 and 110 pounds. Proof of residency and qualification in an eligible assistance program is required. In addition to dog appointments, low-cost spay and neuter services for cats are available with additional discounts for residents over 65 or enrolled in qualifying support programs.

As we remember Officer Lenehan and reflect on the lasting effects his loss had on our city, we ask every driver to make the choice that saves lives: Do not drive impaired. Plan ahead. Use a rideshare. Call a friend. Stay where you are if you need to.

By making pet care more accessible, we’re helping animals stay healthy, reducing pet overpopulation, and supporting families across our community. Learn more and check eligibility details at elkgrove.gov/spayneuter.

Let’s honor Ty’s legacy by protecting one another on the road and ensuring #281 is never forgotten. Learn more about Officer Lenehan and our fallen heroes at the Police Department’s remembrance page. Scan code or visit elkgrove.gov/fallenheros.
