Ever wonder how much the City spends on paper? There’s an app for that. “Open Checkbook” is a new application, launched by the City of Elk Grove, designed to let users easily explore the City’s expenses. In a continued effort to promote transparency and to help you better understand your government, this interactive, online platform offers you a way to review the City’s expenditure information on a computer or mobile device. Open Checkbook displays the City’s expense transaction information down to invoice details and offers users the ability to convert data from graphics to tables, download raw data, and even evaluate how the City’s spending has changed over time. Open Checkbook builds upon the financial resources available to you. Last June, the Open Budget tool was released in concurrence with the adoption of the Fiscal Year 2016-2017 Budget. Open Budget displays revenue sources and expenditures for the City’s yearly operating and capital improvement budgets down to line-item details.

Not only is this a chance to watch world class athletes but an opportunity for Elk Grove, as the host city, to bring teams, reporters, fans, and attention from around the world into our very own backyard. Registration for Kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year begins at your home elementary school at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2017. Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2017. Registration packets are available at your home school. Completed registration packets must be returned by February 6. Say “So Long” to Single-Use Plastic Bags
In November, California voters made history by passing Proposition 67 making California the first state in the country to ban single-use plastic bags. The law officially took effect on December 9. The impact is expected to reduce litter and landfill and eliminate an estimated 25 million plastic bags distributed in California every day. So, don’t forget to carry your own bags!

FREE Chips and Chow for Elk Grove Pets
Animal Services is offering two new FREE services for pet residents of Elk Grove—microchips and food. Get your pet microchipped by calling 687-3042 to schedule an appointment. Pickup food for your pet during the monthly pet pantry event held the second Wednesday of each month. Stop by Elk Grove Police Department between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. when free pet food will be offered to those in need with a valid photo identification and proof of spay/neuter and a pet license.
Changes to California’s Car Seat Law
As of January 1, children under two years old must be in a rear-facing car seat unless they weigh 40 pounds or more, or are 40 inches or taller. For each child under 16 who is not properly secured, parents (if in the car) or drivers can be fined more than $500 and will get a point on their driving record. Have your car seat inspected for free by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician from the Cosumnes Fire Department.

Avoid a Flood of Problems. Prepare for Storm Season Now

We don’t know exactly when the rains will come but we do know the impact that rain can have when we’re unprepared Here are some tips to keep in mind: • Treat a dark traffic signal as an all-way stop during power outages—it’s the law!

• Do not attempt to drive through standing water; if you can’t see the curb, it’s probably too deep to drive through.

• Keep storm drains free of leaves and debris during rains, and put leaves and other yard debris in your green waste container. Call Republic Services at 635-2500 for additional containers, if necessary. • If your property has a history of flooding, purchase sand and sandbags at a hardware or home improvement store before the storm hits. Be prepared for the worst, as only a limited number of sandbags may be available at City distribution sites in anticipation of heavy rainfall and severe, widespread flooding. • Call the City’s maintenance hotline at 687-3005 to report flooding, high creek levels, fallen trees or limbs, clogged storm drains or culverts, malfunctioning traffic signals or street lights, and downed traffic signs. • Stay away from downed or sagging power lines, streetlights, or traffic signals, and any debris that might be entangled with them—they could be deadly! Congratulations to all of the volunteers who 2016 made a difference in Elk Grove. The volunteers pictured below were selected for the 2016 Mayor’s Volunteer Awards for their outstanding service to the community. The awards were presented at the November 9 City Council meeting.
Open Auditions Elk Grove area vocalists in grades 7-12 can win cash prizes of up to $1,000 and opportunities to perform in community events! Open Call for Artists and their Works
Showcase your art during the 5th Annual Fine Art Competition that will be held March 4. Submit your artwork by February 4 under the following categories: 1) water media, 2) oil/acrylic or mixed media, 3) pastel/drawing, 4) photography, and 5) three dimensional. Artworks will be judged by Darling Oldham Neath (known as ”D”), KVIE Public Television’s Art Auction Curator, and owner of Archival Framing and Gallery in Sacramento.
