e’ve reached the ninth edition of the digital-only The 50+ Scene, can you believe it, dear reader? New virtual travel, new programs, and new competitions abound in this issue. SF Shakespeare is putting their production online, and are offering an exclusive “meet the cast” event just for you! Check out page 5 for everything Shakespeare. Last issue we got to know Adrianna, our Case Manager, a little better. This time we’ll dive into our Senior Office Assitant, Robert Dacanay’s answers to a new set of questions.

High-tech or Low-tech?

-Driver. Never underestimate the therapeutic power of driving and listening to loud music.

Tablet or Computer?

-Computer. Growing up in the Silicon Valley, personal computer nostalgia reigns strong (especially in Cupertino!)

Pancake or Waffle?

-Waffles. Leggo’ my Eggo!

Horror or Comedy movie?

-Comedy. Laughter is an instant vacation!

Comic Book or Comic Strips?

-Comic Books. Super hero artwork hypnotized me as a kid.

What’s worse, Laundry or Dishes?

-Dishes. Fresh Linen Scent > Lemon Scent.

-A real question, this is? I am one with the Force; the Force is with me.

Passenger or Driver?

-Ink. You can’t have a pencil without a p-e-n.

-Hiking. Because the problem with jogging is the ice falls out of your glass.

Star Trek or Star Wars?

-High-tech. Give me all the gadgets.

Thanks, Robert! Intriguing insights into the mind of the man at our front desk. Declaring his love of gadgets and high-tech with his first answer led to few surprises in his ensuing responses. However, we must note a discrepancy when Robert chose the fantastic world of Star Wars over the more scientific Trek universe.

A techie perhaps, but apparently a Trekkie he is not.

Team Jo Anna & Ken have claimed the sole spot on the victor’s podium for round 8. Once again combining four items in one picture and three in the other netted them the maximum 24 points.

Puzzle Us This Competition

Appropriately theming the items in their first picture around the sun, Ken poses with a portable solar phone charger next to a giant sundial. Even the bandana around his neck looks like it protects against the sun. Throw some postal stamps into the mix, and you’ve got the 4-item point total.

In their second picture, Jo Anna stands next to a Little Free Library with her “This is Sharks Territory” proudly representing our local hockey team despite their absence from this post-season. Conversely, in the foreground is the antennae soccer ball, a subtle nod to our Earthquakes who made an exciting run in their tournament.

Elsewhere, one of our staff members tried to sneak their pictures into the competition. We saw through their ruse and awarded zero points! Can you guess which person planned this pernicious plot?

Try to solve as many daily puzzles as you can on our Facebook page! The theme is sports and points will be awarded as follows: +2 Points for being first to answer correctly +1 Point for answering correctly The highest number of accrued points after the August 14th puzzle will be crowned Puzzle Master!

The Newly Crowned Puzzle Master In the premiere “Puzzle Us This” competition, the scoring was neck-in-neck right down to the wire. In the end, eight points was enough to secure victory.

Congratulations, Mary Lou Robson, you are the reigning Puzzle Master! Try to defend your crown from usurpers in the next edition of “Puzzle us This” running right now. Good luck!

Tiny Desk Concerts National Public Radio’s (NPR) All Songs Considered and Tiny Desk Concerts are just what they sound like: talented musicians squeezing themselves into NPR’s small studio space to perform for radio audiences.

Host Bob Boilen and his team have transformed the popular Tiny Desk Concert series into a project that musicians participate in from their homes. Watch and listen to the plentiful variety of artists and genres with performances both past and present, including the Blue Man Group’s visit to the “tiny desk” in 2016.

The Tragedy of King Lear

The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival invites you to join members of the King Lear engagement team as well as leading actor Jessica Powell in a lively discussion.

Topics will include playing Lear as a woman, themes of parenting, aging, retirement, and legacy in the play, as well as a sneak peek into how our cast of 13 are performing remotely all on the same screen, prior to the 4 p.m. matinee performance of Free Shakespeare at Home. This summer, Free Shakespeare in the Park will become Free Shakespeare at Home as the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival transitions its public theater program to a virtual format. Offering live virtual performances of King Lear is the safest way to continue thirty-eight years of tradition in the face of the current pandemic.

The Tragedy of King Lear is the story of a nation disrupted by a vain and aging leader who divides the kingdom among her daughters and renounces political responsibility without also renouncing power. The result is family dysfunction, political strife, and a murky stage upon which few are who they purport to be. The play was composed in 1606 as Shakespeare sheltered from a deadly plague ravaging London. A recently-ascended King James struggled to unite under one crown the disparate archipelagic polities that comprised the British world: England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. The nation was still reeling from the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a failed terrorist attempt on the part of England’s Catholic minority to blow up King James and Parliament. This pervading state of distress inflects this tragedy and resonates with the dis-ease engendered by modern pandemics and current crises– dis-ease only curable by returning to the natural world and the very core of our shared humanity.

Rediscover flexibility and ease with Feldenkrais movement improvement exercise. Each class explores novel and gentle movement patterns to invigorate your brain and nervous system with new ways of organizing and sensing your movement, which may result in improved balance and coordination.
