City of Covington Winter/Spring 2023 Recreation Guide

YOUTH ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS

Spring Soccer League

Covington Parks and Recreation is offering a spring soccer league for youth in the City of Covington and the surrounding areas. Our league aims at providing an opportunity for kids to learn about teamwork and sportsmanship. Practices are on weeknights and begin the first week of March. Practice day and time are determined by the volunteer coach. Games are predominantly on Saturdays at Covington Community Park and Kentwood High School. The season kicks off on March 11 and ends on April 29. Registration is open November 29 through January 31, but space is limited and we cannot guarantee space will be available by the deadline date.

Be a Referee!

Are you responsible and fun? Do you like working with kids? Do you have a passion for sports? If you are age 14 or older, you can be a referee! It truly takes a village to run our programs and we need your talents to make it happen.

We are looking for referees of all skill levels and for all age groups as well as responsible adults to oversee our facilities as site leads. Sound interesting? Apply at www.covingtonwa. gov or email us at athletics@covingtonwa.gov.

DANCE & GYMNASTICS

Pre Ballet

This introductory dance class is full of fun, music, and moving! Your blossoming dancer will have a blast learning the basics of ballet. The fundamentals of body awareness, coordination, rhythm, and beginning terminology will be introduced. Ballet shoes suggested but not required.

Ballet

This is a continued introduction to ballet class. The fundamentals of body awareness, coordination, and rhythm will be taught as well as continued ballet terminology. Ballet shoes suggested but not required.

Tiny Stars

This co-ed class introduces coordination, physical development and socialization to young gymnasts. It also includes parent participation! Gymnasts must be able to walk.

Mini Stars

In this co-ed class, gymnasts will be introduced to the basic concepts of gymnastics, balance and strength in a fun-filled environment.

Mighty Stars

In this girls only program, gymnasts will be challenged with more advanced gymnastics concepts in a fun and positive environment.

Girls Beginner

In this introductory girls only school-aged program, gymnasts will learn the basics on all four apparatuses.

*All gymnastics classes are held at Ascend Gymnastics at 1604 15th St. SW Suite 106 in Auburn.

SAFETY

Super Sitters

Boys and girls, come for a day of fun while earning your Super Sitters Certificate. This class will cover leadership, the business of babysitting, basic care for children, understanding children of different age groups, safety and first aid. Bring a sack lunch and snack to class.

Safe at Home

This two-hour course is designed for children ages 8-12 to learn about potential dangers when home alone. Learn how to be responsible and safe in any situation. We will cover family communication,first aid, internet, gun,phone, fire and door safety.

PHOTOGRAPHY

35mm Digital Photography

Learn about basic photographic concepts that will be sure to improve your photography skills. By applying concepts of lighting, composition, aperture, shutter speed, lenses, and a whole lot more, you will be able to create the image of your own signature. Bring your own 35mm digital camera to class including the first class meeting.

Nutrition

Feeding Your Children Well

Concerns about how to feed your toddlers and/or family? Picky eaters? We'll discuss how to address feeding challenges, support family meals, and raise our kids to be trusting competent eaters. We'll share how to make meals go well with what we have, and who we are. This course will be held online via Zoom. It is a two-class series that includes group participation and support so no childcare or transportation is needed. Participants will receive the Zoom class link before the class begins.

AQUATICS

Water Exercise

Water exercise classes are great aerobic and cardiovascular workouts that will help you increase your cardiovascular endurance, improve your heart rate, and help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. All water exercise classes are 55 minutes long, and available on a drop-in basis on the days and times listed on the pool schedule.

Pool Rentals

The pool is available to rent for private parties like birthdays, youth groups, and more. The pool is set-up like a weekend public swim with the WIBIT for private pool rentals!

Pool Rental Fee $250.00/hour | Pool Party Room Rental Fee $50

Neptune’s Cove, the Covington Aquatic Center’s party room accommodates up to 40 people and is available for a $50 fee. The party room can also be rented apart from the pool. Rentals are on the hour, and include 50 minutes of room use. Room use includes all set-up, party time and take-down.

Reservations must be made prior to the rental. Facilities are booked by the hour and payment must be received at the time of the reservation. To make a reservation, contact the Covington Aquatic Center at (253) 480-2480.

Swim Lessons

We are pleased to offer a comprehensive program designed by the American Red Cross. Classes are offered for all ages and all ability levels. Beginning levels focus on water adjustment and introduce basic swimming and water safety skills. More advanced levels concentrate on stroke development, stroke refinement and additional water safety skills.

How to Register *NEW PROCESS*

Swim lessons will open for viewing one month before the first session. You will be able to see which levels are offered and at what times. Registration will then open six days prior to the first day of class. All registrations for Winter and Spring 2023 will open at 10 a.m. to give all customers the same chance at getting into a session.

Online registration is HIGHLY recommended and will give the best advantage to getting a spot. On days where registration opening occurs on a holiday, that lesson session will open the day after the holiday at 10 a.m.
