This August, Covington voters will be asked to consider a 0.2% sales tax increase for street maintenance.
Invest in Preserving Your Streets
ENSURE EVERYONE SHOPPING IN COVINGTON PAYS THEIR SHARE
Covington, despite being the small city we love, is an energetic hub of retail, recreation, and medical services for the surrounding communities. The steady influx of visitors, consumers and commuters contribute to the wear and tear on our streets—and City Council believes they should contribute to our street maintenance as well.
Covington’s Street Fund pays for operational expenses: everything from fixing potholes to plowing snow to maintaining traffic signals and signs, and countless other things that help maintain our roads and promote safe travel. But the Street Fund is operating at a $650,000 deficit based on its current funding sources and it needs a sustainable revenue source to continue even basic operations.
Currently, our street repairs and improvements are partially funded by a $20 car tab fee paid by Covington residents only. The current car tab fee generates $347,500 annually.
To increase the Street Fund while making costs more equitable for our residents, Covington City Council has proposed a twotenths of one percent (0.2%) sales tax increase. This increase would generate $1.3 million annually for streets. If this sales tax is passed, Council will eliminate the $20 car tab fee for Covington residents. The sales tax increase will not go into effect until the car tab fee is repealed.
To put the new cost in perspective, shoppers would pay an additional two cents per $10 purchase of taxable goods, which excludes food and prescriptions. On average, a household can expect to pay $18.78 per year* with the proposed sales tax increase, which is less than one annual $20 car tab fee.
An assessment shows that a significant number of Covington consumers live outside of city limits. The 0.2% tax increase will apply to all individuals who shop in Covington, whether they are residents or visitors. Not only will the new sales tax increase will capture revenue from a much larger demographic of nonresidents who use Covington’s amenities, but it will create a fairer, more sustainable system of funding that benefits our entire community.
By investing in street maintenance, Covington will create a safer environment for drivers and pedestrians ensure a better quality of life for our residents both now and down the road.
(*If the average household has $93,905 in consumer spending each year of which 10% is taxable, 0.2% would be $18.78.).

Swim Lessons
LEARN-TO-SWIM
We are pleased to offer a comprehensive program designed by the American Red Cross. Classes are offered for all ages and all ability levels. Beginning levels focus on water adjustment and introduce basic swimming and water safety skills. More advanced levels concentrate on stroke development, stroke refinement and additional water safety skills.
WHAT CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Placing of your child into the correct level is critical for their success. Each swimming level focuses on different skills, depending on age and ability. If your child is a beginner, they will start in the first level of either Parent & Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, or Learn to Swim, depending on their age. If your child has had lessons before or has some swimming experience, their swimming ability needs to be assessed to determine the appropriate level in our swim lesson program. We provide Placement Tests free of charge during our Public Swims.
