Covington Park & Recreation District
MEASURE TO APPEAR ON AUGUST BALLOT
The City of Covington provides parks, trails, and recreation programs to serve the community. However, there is currently no dedicated and sustainable funding to maintain and expand the city’s park system despite the growing need for more accessible, high-quality parks, trails, and recreation facilities to support our community’s health, recreation, and quality of life.
In August, Covington voters will be asked to decide whether to create the Covington Park and Recreation District, a local metropolitan park district. If approved by voters, the district would establish a new property tax levy dedicated exclusively to parks and recreation purposes within Covington.
The proposed initial property tax rate would be $0.37 per $1,000 of assessed value (approximately 50% of the allowed maximum levy rate of $0.75 per $1,000 of assessed value).
If the measure is approved, revenue generated by the district would be dedicated to parks and recreation uses. Initial priorities identified for funding include:
• Improved park maintenance and upkeep
• Improvements at Covington Community Park
• Improvements at Founders Park
• Improvements at Jenkins Creek Park
• Expansion of Jenkins Creek Trail
• Continued planning for a proposed Whole Health Community Center, which includes a new aquatic center
Over the long term, the proposed district would provide reliable and sustainable funding for Covington parks and recreation. District funding could also support future financing options, such as bonds, for larger community facilities like a new community center.
If not approved, there is no identified source of dedicated and sustainable long-term funding for improving park maintenance, new park improvements, continuing the planning for a new Whole Health Community Center, or reliable and sustainable funding of parks and recreation. Additionally, current operational funding for parks and recreation through the General Fund is not sustainable as prices continue to increase for other General Fund expenditures, especially police and public safety.
The August ballot measure asks residents to consider whether to create a separate funding structure specifically for these purposes. As with any ballot measure involving taxes and public services, understanding what is proposed, how it would be funded, and what it could mean for the community is an important part of making an informed decision.

COVINGTON SOCCER ACADEMY SUMMER SKILLS SERIES - *NEW*
Take your game to the next level with this 6-week technical training program designed to help young players build confidence and sharpen their soccer fundamentals. Sessions are one day a week and are 45 minutes long. Each week focuses on developing core skills such as ball mastery and first touch, passing and receiving, defending and goal side positioning, shooting and finishing, and spacing and vision. This is hosted by Coach Achille Afidegnon and his staff. Located at Mattson Middle School’s grass field.

Join Linda on Wednesday evenings this summer for an inclusive, fitness-based yoga practice at Founders Park. Linda is an eRYT with over 40 years of practical yoga teaching and master trainer experience. She is a lifelong athlete and internationally recognized health and fitness expert, with a M.S. in kinesiology and a PhD in psychology.
The class is open to all ages. Pay per class or register for all 10. Children are welcome provided they can pay attention and not detract from the experience of other participants. In the afternoon, students build simple video games combining the art of video game design and animation to create interactive characters that fly around the screen. This course offers younger students a fun, interactive look at coding. Students will create virtual apps and write their own programs to share with friends and family. It makes learning to code fun and explores problem solving and programming logic.
The gaming academy is an all day course for students who love games. During this course students will be immersed into the world of 2D and 3D game design. The gaming academy is a combination of our Video Game Design, Advanced Game Design and 3D Game Design courses. EMERALD THEATRE SUMMER DRAMA CAMP
End summer center stage with an immersive 2-week drama experience. Campers will dive into the world of theater through high-energy drama games, skill-building workshops, and rehearsals.
Whether your child is a seasoned performer or stepping onto the stage for the first time, they will have plenty of opportunities to sharpen their acting techniques and build confidence. The session culminates in a special non-musical performance of Aladdin for friends and family to enjoy! On the second Friday, students will need to arrive at 6 p.m. to prepare for a 7 p.m. performance.

Neptune’s Cove, the Covington Aquatic Center’s party room, accommodates up to 40 people. It can also be rented apart from the pool. Rentals are on the hour and include 50 minutes of room use, which includes all set-up, party time and takedown.
Reservations must be made prior to the rental. Facilities are booked by the hour and payment must be received at the time of the reservation. To make a reservation, contact the Covington Aquatic Center at (253) 480-2480.

LEARN-TO-SWIM
We are pleased to offer a comprehensive program designed by the American Red Cross. Classes are offered for all ages and all ability levels.
WHAT CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
If your child has had lessons before or has some swimming experience, their swimming ability needs to be assessed to determine the appropriate level in our swim lesson program. We provide placement tests free of charge during our Public Swims.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING CERTIFICATION COURSE
This course is an American Red Cross Blended Learning Lifeguard Training certification course. Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid, CPR/AED, and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Access to the internet for completion of online coursework is required and is assigned outside of scheduled class hours. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. This course is for ages 15 and up and costs $275. SEAHORSES SUMMER LEAGUE SWIM TEAM
The Summer League Seahorses are a recreationally competitive swimming team that trains at the Covington Aquatic Center and competes against other local teams throughout the summer. One hour of practice will be in water and one hour of practice will be on “dry land”. Registration fee includes team cap and shirt.

DASH & SPLASH
This is a fun program for children ages 6 to 15 that focuses on fun and fitness. Participants will engage in fun outdoor activities and learn to play various games both on land and in the water.
The first part of each day will be spent at Covington Community Park and will consist of games such as Frisbee, soccer and Capture the Flag. The second portion of each day will be spent in the water at the Covington Aquatic Center practicing swimming, playing Sharks & Minnows, Animal Ball and more.
Dash & Splash runs three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12-2 p.m.

Water exercise classes are great aerobic and cardiovascular workouts that will help you increase your cardiovascular endurance, improve your heart rate, and help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. All water exercise classes are 55 minutes long, and available on a drop-in basis on the days and times listed on the pool schedule.
WATERX BOOTCAMP
This class is for individuals who would like a low impact, but intense cardio, and muscle building workout, incorporating a mixed version of Shallow and Deep WaterX classes.
WATERX - SHALLOW AEROBICS
Classes located in the shallow end which utilizes aerobic and cardiovascular components. Being low-impact classes, they emphasize stretching, developing muscular strength, and developing range of motion.
WATERX - DEEP AEROBICS
Classes located in the deep end which give one of the greatest aerobic & toning workouts available with no impact to the body’s joints! These aerobic & cardiovascular classes provide muscular conditioning with particularly excellent core strengthening.
