NFL FLAG FOOTBALL POWERED BY USA FOOTBALL AND NFLPLAY60 Covington Parks and Recreation is proud to offer co-ed flag football again this summer! This league is powered by USA Football and NFLPlay60 and is geared toward providing an opportunity for your child to sharpen skills and broaden their knowledge of football with an emphasis on fun, participation, and sportsmanship.

PGA JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE

Join PGA Professionals Paul Russo, Baylor Comstock, Adam Englehorn, and Brian Thornton for another fun season with the Meridian Valley Country Club PGA Jr. League!

The 13u (ages 7-13) in-house program will host weekly Thursday practices and Saturday matches starting April 28 and ending July 23, and the 17u (ages 14-17) will host Friday and Sunday practices with varying matches at local clubs. All skill levels are welcome to the program. Register your child online at www.pgajrleague.com.

Class fees include all program costs ($399 Meridian Valley Member Price, $449 Non-member price). We highly recommend bringing your own golf clubs. A kickoff meeting will be held on Sunday, April 24 at Meridian Valley Country Club and the registration deadline is May 1.

All players will receive an NFL team jersey and flag belt.

Players must provide their own mouth guard. Games will be primarily on Saturday mornings and afternoons with the occasional weekday game as well. Games will be played at Covington Community Park and Kentwood High School.

Registration opens April 5 and the last day to register is June 18. Teams fill up fast so sign up early, we cannot guarantee space will be available on the registration deadline. Practices will start the first week of July.

T-BALL/COACH PITCH/BASEBALL

Our spring t-ball, coach pitch, and baseball leagues are geared toward providing an opportunity for recreational ballplayers to sharpen their skills and broaden their knowledge of baseball with an emphasis on fun, participation and good sportsmanship. Teams are formed according to grade and skill level and we also allow buddy requests.

Practices begin in early May and the season ends June 25.

Teams will have one designated weekday evening practice each week, which will be determined by the volunteer coach.

Games will be held on Saturdays in the Covington area.

Registration closes April 9 and space is limited. We cannot guarantee space will be available on the deadline date so sign up early!

Athletics TRAILBLAZERS TRACK AND FIELD

The mission of this program is to develop young athletes in the fundamentals of track and field events while having fun! At practice, athletes will be introduced to track events including 50m for ages 5/6, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m; relays including 2x50 for ages 5/6 and 4x100; hurdle distances including 50m for ages 5/6, 100m and 400m (using agility hurdles, not real hurdles); and field events including turbo javelin, long jump, standing jump for ages 5/6, discus, and shot put.

Be a Volunteer Coach!

A T-shirt is included in registration fee. Athletes should wear appropriate running shoes and athletic attire and bring a water bottle to every practice.

TRAILBLAZERS ADVANCED TRACK AND FIELD

The mission of this program is to develop young athletes who aspire to compete beyond the recreational level. If your athlete would like a more focused and intense training program, this is a good fit.

There will be three practices per week plus meets and the choice to compete in 2-3 competitive meets (Saturdays), plus 2-3 recreational meets (meet day/times TBD). Recreational meets are optional but encouraged, and the competitive meets are required. Meet entry fees are included in the registration fee, which can be anywhere from $10-25 per meet.

Events include track events (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m); relays (4x100); hurdles (100m and 400m); and field events (turbo javelin, long jump, discus, and shot put).

Want to be a volunteer coach? Coaching can be a valuable volunteer experience for parents, grandparents, siblings, or other caring adults. The commitment is low and the experience is extremely rewarding!

Come join Eastside Basketball Institute (EBI) for a 3-day basketball clinic focusing on teaching young athletes who possess a passion and strong desire to develop and improve their individual and fundamental basketball skills.

This clinic will teach proper sprinting mechanics and speed development in a one-on-one or small group setting.

Campers will receive hands-on teaching on how to properly run and develop speed to apply to all sports. This clinic is run by Rob Thomas, President of Xtreme Speed Track Club and head track and field coach at Kentwood H.S., with other USATF-certified track and field coaches and nationally ranked athletes.

This clinic will help all athletes develop speed for their upcoming seasonal sports. Each participant will receive an Xtreme Speed t-shirt. Athletes should bring running shoes, spikes (if you have them), water, and weather appropriate dress.

This camp will teach participants the basic components of track and field. Campers are exposed to all event areas and will have multiple opportunities to learn and practice.

Camp is run by Rob Thomas, head Track and Field coach at Kentwood High School, as well as assistant coaches and current and former Kentwood athletes. Parents are encouraged to come Thursday for the track meet. Campers should bring running shoes and snacks will be provided.

Experience Adventure Pals with your child as we hear a story, do a craft, sing songs and finish with a snack of your choice. Each month will reflect a new theme for our adventures together.

Classes remain online via Zoom. Please plan on stopping by the Maple Valley Center each month to do a drive through packet pick up of class supplies. We ask that you have basic art supplies available at your home, such as crayons or markers, a glue stick , tape or stapler.

Everything Circus Camp is a novel and exciting way to explore different body movements in a fun exciting way!

Learn to control the forces of momentum, balance, and gravity in this Tramp N Tumbling camp. Aquatics AQUATIC VOLUNTEER ACADEMY

TRAINING The City of Covington Parks & Recreation Division offers an array of safety courses held at the Covington Aquatic Center, including some American Red Cross Certification Courses.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING/BLENDED LEARNING

This is an American Red Cross Blended Learning Lifeguard Training certification course. Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, first aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Access to the internet for completion of the online coursework is required. Online coursework will be assigned outside of scheduled class hours. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate.

COURSE PREREQUISITES To enroll in this lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class session. Please bring proof of age on the first day (driver's license, state identification, birth certificate, or passport). To participate in the lifeguarding course, you must be able to demonstrate the following skills before the start of the course: 300 Yard Swim: Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.

Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

Tread Water: Tread water for two minutes using only the legs. Candidates must place their hands under the armpits and keep their head above water.

Timed Event: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 12 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands on the brick and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Must be completed within one minute and 40 seconds. Swim goggles are not allowed. Candidates should not swim the return distance underwater.

Please bring a swimsuit and towel for the skills evaluation on the first day and for every class.

Make friends, build work experience, gain free access to the pool, and learn the basics of volunteering at the Covington Aquatic Center. After completing the Aquatic Volunteer Academy, you can become a Jr. Lifeguard and Swim Instructor Aide. This is a volunteer program that can earn you community service hours on any day of the week and is a great way to get involved! The experience you gain volunteering as a junior lifeguard and instructor aide is extremely valuable and will put you ahead of others when it comes time to apply for a job as a lifeguard or swim instructor.

COURSE PREREQUISITES To enroll in the AVA course, you must be between 11-14 years of age before the last scheduled class session.

To participate in the AVA course, you must be able to demonstrate the following skills: - Swim front crawl stroke 25 yards - Tread water for one minute - Swim under water for 10 feet The skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the course. Please bring a swimsuit and towel for the skills evaluation and every class.

OTHER ADVANCED TRAINING

The Covington Aquatic Center offers additional American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Courses and other advanced training courses. Schedules for these programs vary based upon demand and advanced instructor availability.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING REVIEW COURSE

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Review Course is intended for currently certified lifeguards wishing to maintain their certification. This course includes a brief review of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course and the practical and written final examinations.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION COURSE

This course is to prepare instructors to teach people swim and to help them be safe when they are in, on, or around water. The Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program covers skills and knowledge in a logical progression for aquatic skill development. As participants develop these skills, they will become safer and better swimmers. This course includes the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training and the Water Safety Instructor Training. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be certified as American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors.

CLINICS BOY SCOUT SWIMMING MERIT BADGE CLINIC

The Covington Aquatic Center’s Boy Scout Swimming Merit Badge Clinic is a 4- hour clinic which allows for Boy Scouts to begin (and perhaps complete) the Eagle-required Swimming Merit Badge. The clinic is staffed by American Red Cross certified Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors who are familiar with the Boy Scout Aquatics Program. A Merit Badge Counselor working for the City of Covington will supervise the clinic and collect all Blue Cards at the beginning of the Clinic.

Come and check out our new and improved Dash & Splash program this summer! This is a program for children ages 6-15 that focuses on fun and fitness. Participants will engage in fun outdoor activities and learn to play various games both on land and in the water. The first part of the day will be spent at the Covington Community Park and will consist of various games and activities. The second portion of each day will be spent in the water at the Covington Aquatic Center, learning swimming techniques and skills, playing sharks & minnows, learning about water safety skills and more!

Dash & Splash runs four days a week with two different sessions, both including a special access to our public swim immediately following the in-water portion of the program.

SWIM LESSONS

LEARN-TO-SWIM

We are pleased to offer a comprehensive program designed by the American Red Cross. Classes are offered for all ages and all ability levels. Beginning levels focus on water adjustment and introduce basic swimming and water safety skills. More advanced levels concentrate on stroke development, stroke refinement and additional water safety skills.

WHAT CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Placing of your child into the correct level is critical for their success. Each swimming level focuses on different skills, depending on age and ability. If your child is a beginner, they will start in the first level of either Parent & Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, or Learn to Swim, depending on their age. If your child has had lessons before or has some swimming experience, their swimming ability needs to be assessed to determine the appropriate level in our swim lesson program. We provide Placement Tests free of charge during our Public Swims.

These 1-hour workouts will be MondayFriday either at 7 a.m., 8 a.m., or 10 a.m. Virtual swim meets will be held on Saturday afternoons on 7/9, 7/23, and 8/6. Ages 6-18 years old.
