Your Voice, Your Parks: Early MPD Survey Results

PRELIMINARY FINDINGS ARE IN, BUT THE SURVEY IS STILL OPEN

Covington residents are sharing their vision for parks — and there’s still time to join in!

Covington’s parks, trails, and recreation programs bring joy to families, strengthen neighborhoods, and enhance our quality of life. However, there is currently no dedicated and sustainable funding to expand or improve the city’s parks and trails – despite the growing need for more accessible, high-quality parks and trails to support our community’s health, recreation, and quality of life. That means no new play areas, trails, or upgraded sports fields. But we have a chance to change that.

The City of Covington is exploring the formation of a Metropolitan Park District (MPD) – a long-term, locally controlled solution that keeps funding in our community and supports the parks and programs we all value. An MPD must be approved by voters.

To ensure any potential MPD truly reflects the community’s priorities, the City has been gathering input through an online survey this year. The response has been tremendous, with residents sharing thoughtful feedback about what matters most for Covington’s parks and recreation future.

Early results show strong support for creating an MPD to fund the following priorities:

• A new aquatic and recreation center

• New sports fields at Covington Community Park

• Expansion of Jenkins Creek Trail to connect to different neighborhoods throughout the city and to connect to the county’s regional trail system

• Expanded trails and restored natural areas at Jenkins Creek Park

• Pickleball courts, trails, picnic shelters, and more at Founders Park

• Increased park maintenance to improve the care of the parks and trails

We’ve also heard that it is important for an MPD to be sensitive to the impact to property taxes, especially as households have been facing rising costs and inflation.

To learn more about the MPD, read FAQs, take the survey, or sign up for updates, visit www. covingtonwa.gov/parks/mpd or scan the QR code.

Swim Lessons

LEARN-TO-SWIM

We are pleased to offer a comprehensive program designed by the American Red Cross. Classes are offered for all ages and all ability levels. Beginning levels focus on water adjustment and introduce basic swimming and water safety skills. More advanced levels concentrate on stroke development, stroke refinement and additional water safety skills.

WHAT CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Placing of your child into the correct level is critical for their success. Each swimming level focuses on different skills, depending on age and ability. If your child is a beginner, they will start in the first level of either Parent & Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, or Learn to Swim, depending on their age. If your child has had lessons before or has some swimming experience, their swimming ability needs to be assessed to determine the appropriate level in our swim lesson program. We provide Placement Tests free of charge during our Public Swims.
