2025 Covington State of the City
VIDEO SERIES HIGHLIGHTS PROGRESS
The State of the City is a snapshot of what’s been happening in the city over the past year. We have created a series of videos highlighting the city’s progress and growth as well as a quick look at what’s to come in the next year or so. Videos can be viewed on the city’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/CityofCovington.
Some of the key highlights include:
• Managed 26 grants for over $57.9 million
• Introduced translation services at the front desk
• Processed 4,352 business licenses, a 12% increase
• Saw 2,800 youth participate in athletics and 2,000 participants in recreation programs
• Completed and opened the city’s newest park - Founders Park
• Made progress on Phase 1 of Jenkin’s Creek Park which includes a upgraded entrance and new parking lot
• Saw a 56% decrease in commercial burglaries, an 8% decrease in property crime and a 21% decrease in auto theft
• Substantial completion of the SR516 improvement project from Jenkin’s Creek to 185th St
• Implemented pedestrian safety improvement program with $317,000 in grants
• Conducted 3,923 building inspections and processed 494 building permits
• Completed the mandated Comprehensive Plan Update
The City is also looking forward to work in the upcoming year on continuing to advocate for the widening of the State Route 18 corridor, seeing progress in the Lakepointe development, further SR516 improvements, and working towards a new aquatics and recreation center.

Youth Leagues
NFL FLAG FOOTBALL POWERED BY USA FOOTBALL & NFLPLAY360
This league is powered by USA Football and NFLPlay60 and is geared toward providing an opportunity for your child to sharpen skills and broaden their knowledge of football with an emphasis on fun, participation, and sportsmanship.
All players will receive an NFL team jersey and flag belt. Players must provide their own mouth guard and shorts with no pockets. Games will be held primarily on Saturday mornings and afternoons with the occasional weekday game. Games will be played at Covington Community Park.
Registration closes June 10. Teams fill up fast so sign up early as we cannot guarantee space will be available on the registration deadline. Practices will start the last week of June. Sign up for the grade your child will be going into for Fall 2025. Picture Day is scheduled for July 12 along with a Punt, Pass, Kick Agility competition.

FALL SOCCER LEAGUE
Covington Parks and Recreation is offering a fall soccer league that aims to provide an opportunity for kids to learn about teamwork and sportsmanship.
Practices are held on weeknights and begin the last week of August with practice days and times determined by the volunteer coach. Games are predominantly held on Saturdays at Covington Community Park and Kentwood High School. The season kicks off September 6 and ends October 18. There will be an end-of-season tournament for grades 1-6.
To infuse fresh faces and teams we partner with City of Auburn Parks and Recreation for grades 5-8. These games will be played at Auburn’s Game Farm Park and Covington Community Park.
Registration opens May 6 and closes August 5. Space is limited so sign up early as we cannot guarantee space will be available on the registration deadline.

FALL VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE
Covington Parks and Recreation is offering a co-ed fall volleyball league that aims at providing an opportunity for kids to learn about teamwork and sportsmanship.
Practices are held weeknights and begin in early November. Volunteer coaches determines the practice days and times. Games are held on Saturdays at Cedar Heights Middle School and Mattson Middle School. Matches begin November 1, and the season ends December 13.
There will be an end-of-season tournament for all divisions given there are at minimum three teams in the division. Registration closes on September 19. Space is limited so sign up early as we cannot guarantee space will be available on the registration deadline.

KENTWOOD TRACK CAMP
This camp will teach participants the basic components of track and field. Campers are exposed to all event areas and will have multiple opportunities to learn and practice. Camp is run by Rob Thomas, Head High School Track and Field Coach, as well as other assistant coaches and current and former track and field athletes.
Parents are encouraged to attend on Thursday for the track meet. The Kentwood Track & Field/Cross Country Booster Club is the proud sponsor of this camp.

STEVE GOUCHER BASEBALL CAMP
This youth baseball camp is well suited for all players from aspiring to elite. Instructor Steve Goucher is a former professional baseball player and Atlanta Braves scout and has over 15 years of experience instructing baseball at all levels. Many of Steve’s students have gone on to play college baseball and a few even made it to the big leagues!

The City of Covington is excited to announce this third annual pickleball tournament! This is a 2-day tournament taking place at Kentwood High School August 23 and 24. These are ongoing non-contact introduction to martial arts classes located at Hawks Martial Arts 27203 216th Ave SE Suite #10 in Maple Valley.

YTI: iGAME CREATORS CAMP
Want to create video games? This is an introductory course for younger students who want to learn to build simple video games. This course combines the art of video game design and animation to create interactive characters that fly around the screen. Amaze your friends and family with your fun interactive games.
This class gives students a look at online game development and puts them in the driver’s seat of simple game creation. Students in this course will develop online games including arcade style, platform and other interactive games that they can publish and share online. Students will also use their games in an eSport setting and compete like real gamers.

Calling all ROBLOX users! Join in with millions of gamers and immerse yourself in your own 3D world! ROBLOX Studio is a 3D-based program that uses physics, LUA programming, and individual creativity to build a world around you, and your avatar - unlike any other software This course will guide students through concepts such as beginner physics, LUA programming, and game development. The gaming academy is an all day course for students who love games. During this course students will be immersed into the world of 2D and 3D game design. The gaming academy is a combination of our Video Game Design, Advanced Game Design and 3D Game Design courses. The course offers students a variety of hands-on experience designing and building their very own games. Students are encouraged to bring a sack lunch.

This class offers students a look at multiple areas of game design. From mobile game development to stand alone, if you have a gamer you will not want to miss this class. Students will create multiple games they can share with friends and family.
YTI: WEB AND APP DESIGN CAMP
This class offers students a hands-on look at the world of app and web design. This interactive course will instruct students about the world of design and development of websites and applications. Students will design their own website and app that they can share with their friends and family.

CAMP ADVENTURE - LIL’ TREKS
Join us for single day adventure field trips this summer! Get a taste of the outdoors as we travel to different fun locations. Register for each trip or just a single day.
Field trips include: July 10 - Covington Community Park and Covington Aquatic Center; July 24 - Kent Bowl and Lake Meridian Park; August 7 - Henry Moses Aquatic Center; August 21Northwest Trek.
CAMP ADVENTURE - MIDDLE SCHOOL
We are getting ready for our action-packed day camp for 6th through 8th graders this summer! Join us as we visit a different location each day for fun activities like rock climbing, horseback riding, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, zip lining, swimming, and much, much more.
We will visit some of our favorite places like High Trek Adventure, Point Defiance Zoo, local parks and more! Pick one session or join us for both! Scholarships are available, inquire at parks@ covingtonwa.gov.

Neptune’s Cove, the Covington Aquatic Center’s party room, accommodates up to 40 people. It can also be rented apart from the pool. Rentals are on the hour and include 50 minutes of room use, which includes all set-up, party time and takedown.
Reservations must be made prior to the rental. Facilities are booked by the hour and payment must be received at the time of the reservation. To make a reservation, contact the Covington Aquatic Center at (253) 480-2480.

AQUA MEMBERSHIPS
Aqua Memberships include unlimited drop-in recreational swimming during their validity period. Family memberships have a limit of four members per household. Additional family members may purchase another supplemental family or individual membership.

LEARN-TO-SWIM
We are pleased to offer a comprehensive program designed by the American Red Cross. Classes are offered for all ages and all ability levels.
WHAT CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
If your child has had lessons before or has some swimming experience, their swimming ability needs to be assessed to determine the appropriate level in our swim lesson program. We provide placement tests free of charge during our Public Swims.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING CERTIFICATION COURSE
This course is an American Red Cross Blended Learning Lifeguard Training certification course. Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid, CPR/AED, and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. Access to the internet for completion of the online coursework is required and is assigned outside of scheduled class hours. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. This course is for ages 15 and up and costs $275. SEAHORSE SWIM CLINICS
The focus of these clinics is to help develop good techniques on strokes, dives, turns, and begin building endurance prior to the start of the swim team season. All clinics require preregistration. A proficiency level equivalent to Learn-to-Swim Level 4 is required to participate in the clinics or the swim team.

DASH & SPLASH
This is a fun program for children ages 6 to 15 that focuses on fun and fitness. Participants will engage in fun outdoor activities and learn to play various games both on land and in the water.
The first part of each day will be spent at Covington Community Park and will consist of games such as Frisbee, soccer and Capture the Flag. The second portion of each day will be spent in the water at the Covington Aquatic Center, practicing swimming, playing sharks & minnows, learning about water safety skills and more!
Dash & Splash runs three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12-2 p.m.

Water Exercise
Water exercise classes are great aerobic and cardiovascular workouts that will help you increase your cardiovascular endurance, improve your heart rate, and help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. All water exercise classes are 55 minutes long, and available on a drop-in basis on the days and times listed on the pool schedule.
WATERX BOOTCAMP
This class is for individuals who would like a low impact, but intense cardio, and muscle building workout, incorporating a mixed version of Shallow and Deep WaterX classes.
WATERX - SHALLOW AEROBICS
Classes located in the shallow end which utilizes aerobic and cardiovascular components. Being low-impact classes, they emphasize stretching, developing muscular strength, and developing range of motion.
WATERX - DEEP AEROBICS
Classes located in the deep end which give one of the greatest aerobic & toning workouts available with no impact to the body’s joints! These aerobic & cardiovascular classes provide muscular conditioning with particularly excellent core strengthening.
