place o f plenty

Welcome

City of Coffs Harbour would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Gumbaynggirr people, who have cared for this land since time immemorial. We pay our respects to their elders, past, present and emerging and commit ourselves to a future with reconciliation and renewal at its heart.

ABOUT

'PLACE OF PLENTY'

'Place of Plenty' captures the essence of the Coffs Coast—a region blessed with abundant natural beauty, diverse experiences, and rich cultural heritage. This phrase honours the Gumbaynggirr people, known as the 'sharing people,' who have sustainably managed this land's plentiful resources for thousands of years, generously sharing their gifts with neighbouring Nations. Today, this spirit of abundance and sharing continues as we welcome visitors to enjoy our pristine beaches, lush hinterland, fresh local produce, and unique attractions. As NSW's first certified ECO Destination, we invite you to experience all the Coffs Coast has to offer while treading lightly and respecting the cultural and natural heritage that makes this place so special.

Whether you roll in by car, train, or touch down in style, we guarantee you’ll fall for this slice of paradise - just like generations before you!

Laid-back beach life may be baked into our DNA, but we take our food, coffee, art and culture VERY seriously! Our place is still relaxed and friendly, with thriving townships and welcoming villages. With over 80,000 lucky folk choosing to call this region home, there’s plenty going on to make us the perfect holiday spot year-round - minus the big city hassles.

This guide is packed with the best places to eat, drink, play, and explore. And if you need more detail (and even more inspo), check out our official visitor site, coffscoast.com . So, just kick back, relax (see?? You’re a local already) and browse at your leisure.

We may be famous for our beautiful beaches (and a fabulously Big Banana and yes, you have to take a selfie), but did you know this thriving town is a creative and foodie hot spot? Plus, it’s wrapped in incredible nature, so you’re never far from a green retreat, a great view, or some saltwater therapy.

Coffs Harbour

(Garlambirla)

City Centre

Downtown Coffs has evolved into a vibrant mix of boutiques, cafes, specialty retailers and cultural experiences, including a self-guided street art trail. It’s also home to the fabulous Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) and high-spec multi-story library - both contained within the impressive architectural home of Yarrila Place. Along Harbour Drive, there's the stylish Gowings Coffs Central shopping centre (ground floor is pet-friendly). You'll find a Visitor Info Outlet here, and

it’s surrounded by cafes spilling out onto footpaths and unique boutiques. For artsy vibes, check out the city centre's Park Avenue Lane and Studio Lane, where the creativity (and craft beer) flows. Oh, and if you're loving the street art, add Vernon & Lyster Streets and Cox Lane to your list! Need a vintage fix? Scarba Street is the thrift-hunter’s paradise, with opshops galore waiting to be rummaged.

The Historic Jetty Precinct

The iconic timber Jetty is where locals and visitors alike gather to soak up the sunshine, watch the boats bob, and maybe even spot dolphins and sea turtles. Jetty Beach is a golden slice of paradise with gentle waves perfect for little splashers. Join the happy hordes wandering the jetty while their ice creams melt. Take a stroll along the Jetty Foreshore and visit the Solitary Island Lighthouse Optic. This carefully removed and preserved original beacon dates back to 1880. There are playgrounds and BBQ's as well.

Coffs Harbour International Marina

Sitting pretty in the Jetty precinct, the Marina is a top spot for a sunset stroll or a bit of boat envy. Book a fishing or dive charter. Head to the Fisherman’s Co-op for the freshest seafood around. From ice cream and burgers to fine dining, there’s something here for everyone. Grab some fish & chips and find a grassy spot overlooking the beach. And if you’re here on a Sunday, don’t miss the Harbourside Market think local goodies, live music, and a buzzing atmosphere. Then head over the railway line to the famous 'Jetty Strip', where buzzing eateries and bars line up alfresco!

Muttonbird Island

This nature reserve is a must-visit. Follow the breakwall from the Marina and head up the short (but steep in some sections) walking trail - the views will knock your socks off. You can also learn about the island's significance to the Gumbaynggirr people.

Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve
Aanuka Beach House

Coffs Creek

Winding its way through town, Coffs Creek is a haven for walkers, cyclists, kayakers, and paddleboarders. Meander past the lush 20-hectare oasis of the Coffs Harbour Botanic Garden , where native birds and greenery make for a peaceful escape, then follow the flow all the way out between North Wall and Park Beach, with dog-friendly swimming spots along the way. Take extra care around the river mouth during the outgoing tide - the current can be dangerous. If you prefer to stay dry, follow the Coffs Creek Walk - an 8.6km mix of road, bike paths, dirt tracks and boardwalks, linking the City Centre with the Botanic Garden , Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, Jetty Beach and Park Beach.

Coffs Creek & Coffs Harbour Botanic Garden

Park Beach

This long stretch of golden sand is perfect for family fun (and is patrolled year-round). Pack a picnic and hang out at the grassy Park Beach Reserve, or grab lunch at the Donovan's Surf Club Restaurant & Bar with a front-row view of the waves. Need a shopping fix? Park Beach Plaza is just up the road.

Diggers Beach

If you’re chasing waves, this is where you want to be. A favourite with the local surf crowd (and host to surf comps), it’s got consistent breaks and stunning views. Not a surfer? Take the scenic coastal walk instead and soak up the breathtaking coastline

before a refreshing dip. Or, drive a couple of minutes due west, and you’ll find The Big Banana Fun Park . Happy hour? Join the beautiful people for sundowners at the beachy-chic Aanuka Beach House, which has a prime position on the grass leading down to the sand at Diggers Beach.

Korora Bay

Escape the crowds and discover the tranquil beauty of Korora Bay, located north of Coffs Harbour. It is home to a stretch of beaches, from Hills Beach in the north to Charlesworth Bay at the southern end. Pacific Bay Resort’s expansive and beautifully landscaped grounds

lead down to the Bay, and along this stretch, you’ll find the delightful Solitary Islands Aquarium.

Bruxner Flora Reserve

Tucked into the Orara East State Forest, this reserve is home to the Forest Sky Pier, at Niigi Niigi Sealy Lookout, with sweeping views over the entire Coffs Coast. The area has well-marked walking trails, Gumbaynggirr cultural experiences, and a cafe. For an extra thrill, check out the Treetops Adventure Park, where you can swing through the forest like Tarzan.

STOP PRESS!

Woolgoolga voted Australian Best Mainland Beach of 2025, with feted judge Brad Farmer AM saying, “ I have researched beaches across Australia for over 40 years, and Woolgoolga is an absolute standout …Fish the coast or any of its beautiful surrounding estuaries, surf any of the consistent pumping breaks, spot friendly kangaroos bouncing across the headlands, enjoy a round of golf, dine out in style or simply set up camp for a few hours or a few days. It really is a hasslefree favourite.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Woolgoolga (Or ‘Woopi’)

This buzzing coastal town is full of colour and life, with an eclectic beach market and the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple & Museum – part of Woopi’s surprisingly rich Punjabi and Sikh heritage dating back to WWII (celebrated each year at the popular Woolgoolga Curryfest). Wander along Beach and Market Streets for delicious eats, surf shops, homewares and boutiques. Take a stroll along the beach and see if you can spot the eerie skeleton of the 1893 shipwreck ‘Buster’ peeking through the sand. Explore the coastline via the elevated pathway known as the Woolgoolga Whale Trail (bonus points for whale spotting during

migration season). Bike-riders will love the relatively gentle Woolgoolga Loop Trail, or head west to Wedding Bells State Forest for more serious mountain bike action.

Sapphire Beach

True to its name, this spot sparkles with deep blue waters and panoramic views from the Solitary Islands lookout. Boasting a range of accommodation from luxe resorts to holiday parks, you’ll have a great base from which to explore. With its shallow creek, grassy areas, playground and easy access to the rainforest, you can kayak, swim, fish or kick back in the shade at the picnic area. Surfers love the main beach and nature lovers—there’s something for you too! Moonee Beach Nature Reserve is home to coastal rainforest, sea caves, and rare plant species can be found on Blare Bluff. Need supplies? Food? Drinks? Moonee Market and the family-friendly Moonee Beach Hotel have you covered.

Afterwards, treat yourself to a top-notch meal at the beachfront Rattle Restaurant & Bar You’ve earned it!

protected by Bare Bluff Headland , making it popular for swimming. The headland is also a fabulous walk for unbeatable panoramic views. Stop by the Sandy Beach House for bohemian vibes, food, fresh flowers, homewares and fashion.

Arrawarra & Mullaway

Surfers in the know grab their boards and hit Arrawarra Beach for its famous right-hand point break. WHY BEING AN ‘ECO DESTINATION’ IS SO IMPORTANT TO US

In 2021, the Coffs Coast earned a huge green tick of approval, becoming a globally recognised ECO Destination - the first in NSW! Awarded by Ecotourism Australia (and renewed in 2023), this recognition celebrates our commitment to sustainable tourism and unforgettable nature-based and cultural experiences. Our region is the only area in NSW where the Great Dividing Range meets the Pacific Ocean. It’s home to the Solitary Islands Marine Park, which is rich in tropical and subtropical marine life, abundant nature reserves, diverse flora and fauna, and sites of great significance to the traditional owners of our land, the Gumbaynggirr People. The Gumbaynggirr Nation encompasses a number of National Parks, including ECO Certified Bongil Bongil National Park and world-heritage-listed Dorrigo National Park with ancient Gondwana rainforest.

Being awarded ECO Destination certification is more than just a label; it's a commitment to preserve our natural assets.

Leading the Way

Obtaining ECO Destination status required a rigorous 18-month assessment process undertaken by the City of Coffs Harbour, with Ecotourism Australia endorsing our certification to international standards. Many Coffs Coast tourism experiences have also received their own certification (listed over page), with several others currently undertaking the process.

As our valued visitors, we ask that you help us protect this special place. Tread lightly on our fragile and unique ecosystems, travel thoughtfully and leave only footprints behind. Generations of lucky holidaymakers have treasured the Coffs Coast, and we want to ensure that future generations can also experience the awe and joy of this natural wonderland.

Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve ................................................. 1km

At the end of the Marina in the heart of the Jetty precinct, Muttonbird Island offers a short but steep (1km) walk with views (and a hill) that will - quite literally - take your breath away. As NSW’s most important roosting site for Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, it’s a must-visit for nature lovers!

Moonee Beach Nature Reserve ........................................................ 2km

Take a stroll to 'Look At Me Now Headland' with panoramic views over Moonee Beach. It’s a fantastic spot for whale watching in winter, birdwatching in spring, and spotting Eastern Grey kangaroos all year round (great for pics, but stay on the path)!

Woolgoolga to Woolgoolga Lake 3km

Take a relaxing 3km loop along a pristine white sandy beach, with the chance to see the timber bones of the historic ‘Buster’ shipwreck if conditions are right! The trail leads to Woolgoolga Lake, perfect for swimming, kayaking, or fishing, before looping back through coastal forest past a resident flying fox colony.

Bindarri National Park Up to 26km

Lace up your hiking boots for a mix of lush rainforest and towering eucalypts! Take the easy 1km Bangalore Falls walk or challenge yourself with the 26km Plateau Circuit Loop. If you’re up for a thrill, experienced 4WD drivers can tackle the 80km Orara Escarpment touring route.

Sherwood Nature Reserve ................................................................. 2km

For a fun family-friendly adventure, the Woolgoolga Falls Walking Track is a winner! With creek crossings and a lovely waterfall at the end, it’s the perfect little escape into nature.

Ulidarra National Park .................................................................. 3.2km

Pack a picnic and relax by Bucca Bucca Creek, or take on the more challenging 3.2km End Peak trail for some incredible views. There’s mountain biking, hiking, and plenty of wildlife to spot along the way!

Dorrigo National Park .............................................. Various Distances

Take a drive up to the top of the escarpment and the lush rolling farmland of the Dorrigo Plateau unfolds. Go chasing walks and waterfalls. Follow the signs to the Dorrigo National Park Visitor Centre, and they can advise on walks through world-heritage-listed Gondwanna rainforests. Or, prebook one of their rangerguided Discovery Tours via nationalparks.nsw.gov.au. Bookmark the page, because big plans are in place to develop the new Rainforest Centre and multi-day walk. *Distances are approximate and one-way unless advised. More info at coffscoast.com

These are the days…Kids go free-range, making new friends, discovering new adventures on their bikes and not on their phones. Mornings are for hiking, paddling and play, followed by lazy afternoons at the beach. Pancakes, ice cream, and pizza (too much is never enough). Slip, slop, slap, swim, eat, swim, sleep, repeat…

24 WAYS TO PLAY:

We asked a bunch of families about their favourite things to do on the Coffs Coast, and this is what they told us!

In no particular order:

1. Brave the Waterslides at The Big Banana So much more than a big yellow fruit, this fun park includes the country’s biggest indoor slide and the tallest waterslides between Sydney and the border. Have fun at the skate rink, cafe, banana-themed gift shop, Fun Zone, laser tag, and the older kids there’s Hyper Bumper Cars, axe throwing and Escape Rooms.

2. Tarzan through Treetops Adventures Swing, zip, and climb your way through the forest like a caffeine-fueled koala *cue Tarzan yodel*. The park has over 110 challenges and 20 ziplines. Just up the road is the Forest Sky Pier at Sealy Lookout– it has views for days, walking trails, a cafe, picnic area, and kids love feeling on top of the world!

3. Visit the Miniature Village at The Clog Barn A long-time family favourite, this little slice of Dutch life is complete with clog making (and giant clogs for selfies), windmills, free entry into the delightful miniature Dutch village (with a working model train), and Big Oma’s famous Dutch pancakes.

4. Snorkelling & Scuba diving the Solitary Islands Meet the underwater locals. Jetty Dive has scuba dive lessons (PADI Seal) for kids 8-10yrs in the pool, and kids can go out to the Solitary Islands Marine Park for snorkelling if they are confident in the water. Tours and hire through Jetty Dive.

5. Swim with Dolphins at Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary Get up close and personal with some furry, scaly, and feathery locals. Book in for a dolphin swim or encounter. Learn how they train seals. Find out how the Sanctuary is helping animal conservation efforts. And when you get snackish, head to the perfectly-named ‘Peckish Penguin’ Cafe.

6. Watch the Whales Breaching – During migration season, thousands of humpback whales make their way up and down the east coast (Jun-Oct). Two operators provide regular whale-watching experiences from the Coffs Marina. Jetty Dive can get you a frontrow seat in their fast whale-watching boat, or try Whale Watch Experiences’ purpose-built catamaran. You’ll also find many landbased viewpoints on most of our prominent headlands along the coast.

Stay safe! Always swim between the flags, read the signs and listen to lifeguard instructions. Rip tides along the east coast can be very dangerous at any beach. Beware tidal creeks (including Coffs Creek) - The tidal currents can be very strong. We recommend that people not swim, use surf craft or flotation devices near the creek mouth and take extreme care if wading across the creek mouth where it meets the sea during outgoing tides.

Mullawarra Beach

Swing into a freshwater river swimming hole. Float down aquamarine estuaries and creeks. Tackle the white water in the wild. Ride the waves of pristine beaches and swim or snorkel with whales and dolphins – it’s bucket-list stuff. Adventures in and on the water are a way of life here, so join us and DIVE IN!

SURF'S UP

Surfing’s in our blood. If it’s waves you seek, you’re in the right place. With so many beaches, you’ll find a wave working somewhere in almost all conditions! Hire boards or book a lesson with a local surf school.

DIGGERS BEACH This protected golden crescent is a favourite with surfers, swimmers and fishos. The southern end offers great surfing, and the protected north end is an excellent spot for learners. Plays host to regular surf comps, including the upcoming Surfing NSW titles in July.

EMERALD BEACH Thanks to a southern left-hand reef break as well as a beach break, the local surf school often teaches here as the southern headland shelters the beach from larger swells, making it perfect for newbies.

SAWTELL MAIN BEACH , or ‘Main’, is a popular spot, and gentler waves can be found at the southern end in front of Sawtell ‘Island’.

MACAULEYS BEACH , at the northern end of Park Beach, provides a northeast swell that produces a long left off the headland. The consistent break offers surfable waves at all tide stages, perfect for beginners or the more experienced board rider.

WOOLGOOLGA BEACH Patrolled in season and suitable for all levels

of surfers. From the shelter provided close to the southern headland to the more exposed areas of the northern beach.

Seasoned surfers are well catered for with plenty of challenging, legendary breaks along the Coffs Coast to choose from, including Arrawarra, ‘Southies’ at Bonville Headland, ‘Trapdoors’ at the southern end of Boambee Beach and 'Gallows' at the northern end.

THE HUMPBACK HIGHWAY

Nature's best show is on from June to October each year, and we’re in a prime position on the ‘Humpback Highway,’ where you can take in the spectacle of thousands of whales journeying up the coast to warmer waters to breed before showing off their calves on their way back down to Antarctica. And if it’s a lifechanging experience you’re seeking, the Coffs Coast is one of a handful of places around Australia where you can swim with whales! You can do this with ECO Certified operator Jetty Dive (whale swim tours run Aug-Sept). They also run whale-watching tours on their purpose-built fast boat from June to October. Tours are also available on Whale Watch Experience's large catamaran, The Pacific Explorer. If you'd prefer to view the whales from land, pick any prominent Coffs Coast headland during the migration season.

DIVE & SNORKEL

Dive into an underwater wonderworld at Solitary Islands Marine Park, where a rare mix of tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate waters meet to provide a playground for unique marine life, from stingrays and sea turtles to grey nurse sharks and giant cuttlefish. Giddy-up

The Orara Valley is horsey—very horsey. The Nana Glen Equestrian Centre is a key regional riding club and event hub; however, if you forgot to bring a horse, you’d better gallop over to HWH Stables in Upper Orara. They offer rides through forest trails and along Boambee Beach.

4WD Adventures

Commando, Dump, Widow Maker, Impossibles, Rocky, and Perseverance are just some of the 4WD tracks you can tackle in the region! Visit coffscoast.com for info and test your 4WD skills on different terrains.

Beach Driving - If coastal cruising is more your speed, the Coffs Coast offers more subdued drives along its beaches, plantations, and subtropical rainforests. Before heading out, check out the local Council’s beach driving map and policy (coffshabour.nsw.gov.au).

Mountain bike trails

Get ready for serious action—a new gravity trail network in Wedding Bells State Forest is putting us on the map! Located on Stuarts Road, Arrawarra , this network is managed by the Woolgoolga Mountain Bike Club and is already drawing riders across NSW.

If you’re a more experienced rider looking for gnarly downhill thrills, head to Mount Coramba , a short drive inland from Moonee Beach, where the Club maintains one of Australia's most renowned downhill trails. Plus, there are epic mountain and sea views.

Golf. It’s either ‘a good walk, ruined’ or the perfect way to avoid life’s pesky responsibilities… We’re firmly in the latter camp, and lucky for us, we’ve got four fantastic courses, a high-spec driving range, and minigolf aplenty.

1. Voted Australia’s Favourite Golf Course seven years in a row, the legendary Bonville Golf Resort is a must-play experience if you love golf! Towering gums frame its velvety green and flawless fairways, making each hole unique. You can also stay and dine there.

2. Sawtell Golf Club is just 500 metres from the charming fig tree-lined main street of Sawtell (and the sea breezes), and this picturesque 18-hole course caters to all abilities. Those who make a beeline for the ‘19th hole’ are well catered for at the Clubhouse.

3. Coffs Harbour Golf Club is five minutes from the city centre and has the only 27 hole course on the North Coast! Serious golfers love it, but don’t let that deter you if you’ve got your L plates on - it’s super friendly, too.

4. To the north, we have the seaside beauty of Safety Beach Golf Club, where you can play 18 holes alongside a friendly mob of kangaroos. Although they can be a judgy audience…

5. Holidays are a great time to improve your game, and the stateof-the-art tech at Coffs Harbour Driving Range, complete with a pro shop and a 6-hole artificial chipping/putting facility (with a bunker)!

6. Mini-Golf can get competitive, but if you’re willing to risk it, head for the impressively landscaped 18-hole Putt Putt course at Coffs Driving Range or head to the Big Banana Fun Park for a round of mini-golf. Special mention also to Pacific Bay Resort, which has an 8-hole par 3 course open to guests and the public!
