STUDENTS OF BARAT ACADEMY UNDER MS. ANGELA LAMB Barat Academy is an independent religious college preparatory school for middle schoolers and high schoolers in Chesterfield, MO. My name is Angela Lamb and I am the Art Teacher at the academy. In addition to teaching general art education to middle schoolers and high schoolers, I teach Graphic Design & Media Literacy, Drawing and Painting as well as Ceramics. This art show is reflective of the entire school art program. In this curated selection, you will find an exploration of neurographic art utilizing sea life as the subject matter. From the Media class, there is computer generated art and photo manipulation displayed. Collage, sculpture, line drawings, and various painting techniques are also on display. The goal of Barat’s art program is to expose them to as many art forms and techniques available to explore the creative process fully to be a well-rounded artist and creative thinker. SUKANYA MANI Through cutting, transforming and installation, I re-imagine physical twodimensional entities to make sense of ideologies of appearance as they frame identities of women. Through experimentation between abstract and representation, I cut paper into patterns that fragment and unite the female body. Often, there are clear references to a body part like hair, neck and torso. At other times the patterns are abstract and disconnected and are more suggestions of emotions and sensations like touch and smell. By combining these two styles, I create environments that depict familiarity and otherness. The act of cutting out the paper reflects my perspective of partly told storiessilenced voices of women and how their femininity and adornment are used against them when they are sexualized. Rather than create portraits based on appearance, I use a violent method- knives to cut out the very adornment that defines femininity. This exhibit brings together an immersive, multi part installation that is organized by visual complexity and relationship of individual elements to each other. Large and small representative and abstract symbols establish a progression to encourage the exploration of patterns, forms and the overall theme that I consider in my work. Through engaging social commentary, I hope is to dismantle and reclaim stereotypes surrounding female stories through the reworking of how we see them - lives of the oppressed that are silenced and worshiped in the same breath. Title: Space Between
Photo credit: Katherine Douglas-Schien “We are made of star stuff”- Carl Sagan” Inspired by the iconic quote by Carl Sagan, this series looks up to the stars for an understanding of ourselves. Our connection with the abstract concept we call “space” is binding and inspiring at the same time. “Space is defined as “the dimensions of height, depth, and width within which all things exist and move.” It is the true and original shapeshifter, never static, always evolving, a storyboard for our ancestors and a frontier for future explorations. Dark matter and Dark energy, both measurable but unknown permeates space. What is underneath this expanse that makes up 85% of the unseen matter and energy enough to rip our universe apart? Space between explores the different ways that we, the viewer, experience space- as a solid mass, as a negative void, as distance travelled and as far as we can see. For my preliminary prototype, I made very intentional paper cuts and installed it as an experiment to see how each layer lets in light and appears in relationship with one another. Each individual shape is familiar, but suspended together, it shapeshifts allowing light to enter in very unexpected ways and recreating different visual experiences as viewers approach and move around the work.” -Sukanya
Title: Joy
“Joy” is a sculpture designed by Sukanya Mani, a creator that seeks “to activate public and private spaces in ways that are engaging, immersive, and contemplative.” The sculpture stands 5’ 3” in height and will be moved to various parks and trailheads within the City of Chesterfield in order to spread “joy” throughout the city. “Joy” is currently located at the Chesterfield Amphitheater entrance. “I strongly believe that art can be an agent for change. I seek to activate public and private spaces in ways that are engaging, immersive, and contemplative. My process involves creating with intent, placing context into my work, and meeting the community where they are. Each project tells a story about the surrounding site and the lives of the people who engage with the work. Creating public art is a collaborative process, and I embrace working with various stakeholders involved to develop artworks that engage the community and imbue a sense of respect for the site. My work can be found nationally and has been given both permanent and transient homes in the City of Poplar Bluff, Lee’s Summit, Ballwin, Manchester, Chesterfield, Ellisville and Brentwood.” -Sukanya
