On April 30, 2026, Chesterfield City Administrator Mike Geisel was awarded the prestigious Jay T. Bell Award by the Missouri City/County Management Association.
This honor recognizes a career defined by leadership, professionalism, and lasting impact. Mike has served the City of Chesterfield since 1988 as one of its very first employees and has been at the forefront of our community’s most defining moments. From guiding recovery after the devastating 1993 flood to helping transform the Chesterfield Valley into a thriving economic center, and continuing his leadership as City Administrator since 2016, he has consistently led with integrity and vision.
Mike’s steady leadership, commitment to excellence, and deep institutional knowledge has helped shape Chesterfield into the vibrant, resilient community we know today. CITY ADMINISTRATOR, MIKE GEISEL, REFLECTS ON CITY HALL TURNING 25 YEARS OLD
The City of Chesterfield incorporated in 1988. We often overlook our relative infancy as we look back and celebrate the impressive list of accomplishments during our first 38 years. In 1999, Mayor Nancy Greenwood negotiated the purchase of 8 acres of land at the intersection of Chesterfield Parkway and Swingley Ridge Road from Monsanto (the current Bayer campus) in hopes of eventually building a City Hall. The City had long deliberated the financial efficacy of constructing a new City Hall verses continuing to lease commercial office space off of Swingley Ridge Road. Like most decisions, proponents and opponents aggressively debated the merits. In hindsight, the public input and debate provided for what most would agree, both a pivotal and positive action by our elected officials. Your City Hall is a landmark. A meeting place for community groups, a place where the public is engaged and public services are accessed.
In so many ways, Chesterfield City Hall is illustrative of the community. Major actions are often debated, challenged, researched, and analyzed; and typically require lengthy periods of deliberation with significant public input. That is local government at its best. Once a decision has been made, the community commits to it. Our City Hall has now served the community for 25 years. In many ways, it is better today than the day it opened. We have been good stewards for the community. We have maintained the facility exceptionally well and its construction has proven to be a wise decision.
If you have not recently visited your City Hall, we encourage you to drop in and say hello. Walk through the rotating art displays and the special displays in recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary. We hope you are as proud of not only what you’ve created, but more importantly, the expectations the community has for those who serve you. We’ll keep the doors open for you!
The City of Chesterfield has renewed a five-year contract with Republic Services for our solid waste and recycling service. New rates will go into effect on August 1, 2026. Seniors will continue to receive a 15% discount.

A LOOK BACK AT CHESTERFIELD’S PUBLIC WORKS
America turning 250 has us feeling sentimental about Chesterfield’s roots, so who is better to commemorate than the man who keeps all our roots (literally and figuratively) in check than the Director of Public Works/City Engineer, Jim Eckrich!
While my old Sony Walkman is still rocking songs from 1988 like Faith, Could’ve Been, and Man in the Mirror, the City of Chesterfield Department of Public Works is certainly not mired in the past. On the date of the City’s incorporation in 1988, we accepted 109 miles of public streets from St. Louis County – many of which were in poor condition. Not only have most of these streets been reconstructed to meet Chesterfield’s standards, we have also added 77 miles of streets through new development. The City now maintains 186 miles of public streets, over 260 miles of sidewalk, and over 18,000 street trees!
In addition to maintaining and adding streets, the City has significantly updated our facilities. The Public Works Facility was constructed in 1995 at the intersection of Edison Avenue and Public Works Drive. In 2001, City Hall was constructed on vacant land south of the current Bayer campus. These facilities house the majority of the City staff, the Police Department, the City Court, and the Council Chambers. We work hard to maintain these facilities to ensure they are places the citizens of Chesterfield can be proud of.
The Department of Public Works has consistently looked for ways to improve services to Chesterfield residents. In 2000, the voters approved a $28 annual assessment to cover repairs to sewer laterals for eligible properties. Since inception of this program, we have repaired 2,438 sewer laterals.
On May 18, 2015, the City of Chesterfield Department of Public Works became the 100th agency in North America to be accredited by the American Public Works Association. We have indeed come a long way! In 1988, George Harrison had his mind set on you – and so do we. The Department of Public Works wants to make Chesterfield a place you can be proud to call home.

DOWNTOWN CHESTERFIELD?
The City of Chesterfield has been working with The Staenberg Group to transform the 4.5 million-square-foot site, formerly Chesterfield Mall, into the much-anticipated Downtown Chesterfield. Conveniently located at the intersection of Interstate 64 and Clarkson Road, Downtown Chesterfield will serve as an urban city center and central hub for residents and visitors of Chesterfield. The mixed-use development offers a safe, ecologically sustainable environment and will feature many amenities, some of which include:

Following the demolition of Chesterfield Mall, plans for the site’s redevelopment continue to progress. The demolition was performed strategically, with materials preserved for utilization. In addition, the Macy’s and Dillard’s buildings were left untouched. The Macy’s building will be converted into office or retail space, while Dillard’s will remain a tenant at the site following a remodel of their store. Preparation for construction will continue with the site’s grading; installation of roads, utilities, and streetlights; and construction of a centrally located park. The grading and infrastructure work is estimated to be completed in 2027, with the first residential tenants moving into the development in late 2028 or early 2029.
Downtown Chesterfield aims to bring new life to the area with a great mix of entertainment, attractions, and green space. Walkability will be prioritized in the development with walkways connecting nearby Central Park and Wildhorse Village. Though the beloved Chesterfield Mall is gone, Downtown Chesterfield is an exciting next step for the City of Chesterfield!

BACKSTOPPALOOZA | AUGUST 22
The Ed Nestor Memorial Backstoppalooza is an annual fundraising concert dedicated to supporting BackStoppers, Inc., an organization that provides immediate financial assistance and ongoing support to the families of police officers and firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The 2026 Backstoppalooza fundraising concert will take place on Saturday, August 22 at the Chesterfield Amphitheater. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the evening kicking off at 6:30 p.m. featuring opening artist Tyler Lewis, followed by the headlining act, Mississippi Moon: A Tribute to the Doobie Brothers, at 7:30 p.m.
All proceeds from Backstoppalooza benefit BackStoppers, Inc., with additional donations encouraged and collected throughout the event through food and beverage sales, 50/50 raffle, and t-shirt sales. Since its inception in 2013, Backstoppalooza has raised more than $760,000 in support of this important mission, including nearly $78,000 raised in 2025 alone.

On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Chesterfield community will come together to celebrate National Night Out, joining thousands of neighborhoods across the country in the 43rd annual crime and drug prevention event.
Sponsored nationally by the National Association of Town Watch and locally by the Chesterfield Police Department, National Night Out brings together more than 10,000 communities across all 50 states. The event is designed to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention, encourage participation in local safety initiatives, strengthen neighborhood connections, and build strong partnerships between residents and law enforcement. It also sends a clear message that communities are united and committed to keeping their neighborhoods safe.
Residents throughout Chesterfield and across the nation are encouraged to take part by locking their doors, turning on their outdoor lights, and spending the evening outside with neighbors and local police. It’s an opportunity to enjoy a fun, relaxed environment while fostering community spirit and working together toward the shared goal of preventing crime and addiction.
Throughout the evening, members of the Chesterfield Police Department’s Community Affairs Unit and Patrol Division will visit registered neighborhood gatherings in Chesterfield and Clarkson Valley. These visits provide a valuable opportunity for residents to ask questions, share concerns, and engage in open, positive dialogue with officers.

AQUATIC CENTER SCHEDULED TO CLOSE PERMANENTLY AFTER THE 2026 SEASON
DUE TO EXPENSIVE OPERATION & MAINTENANCE COSTS
Many of 40,000 annual visitors to the Chesterfield Aquatic Center may not realize that it was originally constructed in 1997, prior to the establishment of the City’s Parks, Recreation & Arts Department.
Funded through a Parks bond approved by residents in 1994, the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center opened in 1998 with basic amenities including lap lanes, locker rooms, and diving boards. The community has continued to invest in this important public amenity over the past three decades, including voter approval of a half-cent sales tax in 2004 that funded additions such as a lazy river and water slides. The City has also leveraged grant funding to support ongoing improvements, reflecting Chesterfield’s long-standing commitment to high-quality recreational facilities.
According to industry experts, the typical lifespans of outdoor pools and water features are 15-35 years. While it has been well-maintained over the years, it has reached the point where temporary repairs are no longer a fiscally responsible long-term solution. The facility is inefficient, leaking water, and has become more expensive to operate each year.
In 2023, the City partnered with Capri Pools & Aquatics to assess the conditions of the Aquatic Center. The feasibility study performed noted the biggest issue of the facility is the amount of water loss during operations. To resolve ongoing operational and maintenance deficiencies, install new piping and pumps, and identify and repair water leaks, Capri Pools & Aquatics estimates the cost at $2.5 to $4.5 million. This estimate does not include any additional upgrades or new pool amenities. Decommissioning the pool and restoring the site to undeveloped grassland is estimated to cost $2.9 million, should the Chesterfield community choose that option. With unforeseen costs mounting, the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center is scheduled to close after the 2026 season.
WHAT SHOULD THE CITY DO NEXT?
A POSSIBLE POOL REPLACEMENT?
Last fall, we conducted a community wide study to understand what residents would like the City to do regarding the rising maintenance costs of the Aquatic Center. 86% of residents polled stated that they believed the City would benefit from a new outdoor aquatic center rather than removing it. Based on that feedback, our design team developed four concepts based on the priorities identified in the community survey.
Those concepts were presented at Open Houses on March 5 and 7, 2026, where residents learned more about the current facility, the challenges it faces, and the potential options being considered for the future. More than 90 Chesterfield residents joined City staff and the design team to carefully review four draft concepts and building plans, ask questions, and share feedback. Residents were also able to review the options and provide feedback online. Participants were invited to share which concept they preferred, how they would improve it, and ask any questions they still had.

NEXT STEPS:
Using input from surveys, open houses, and in-person feedback, the design team refined the aquatic center concepts to reflect community priorities and mostsupported features. We are now seeking your feedback to help guide final decisions and communications, ensuring the plan reflects community priorities before moving forward. The City will also conduct random-sample telephone and text-to-web surveys to ensure statistically valid input from across the community.

250 FLAGS IN CENTRAL PARK
Those who served our country will be honored in Central Park, where 250 full-sized American flags will stand in tribute, each dedicated to a patriot with a commemorative placard. On display beginning Friday, June 12 through July, this moving installation offers a meaningful setting for photos or a quiet moment to take in the powerful sight and sound of flags waving in the breeze.
