So Many Ways to Play
Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation manages a park system that reaches nearly every corner of the city. With more than 100 parks, at least 50 playgrounds for all ages and abilities, three off-leash dog parks with a fourth opening later this year, and over 4,100 acres of parkland, there are countless ways to get outside and stay active. From trails and splash pads to athletic fields, gardens, disc golf courses, and picnic areas, the system supports play in many forms.
More than 130 miles of trails and bikeways connect parks, neighborhoods, and destinations across Cedar Rapids, with even more options throughout the metro area. The system also includes community favorites like Noelridge Park Greenhouse and Flower Gardens, Old MacDonald’s Farm, Ushers Ferry Historic Village, and the Tait Cummins and Tuma sports complexes. With parks open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and seasonal amenities available May 2 through September 27, there’s always a place to explore, connect, and play.

Recreation becomes a tool for growth, not just something to pass the time.
This approach recognizes that inclusive and accessible recreation plays an important role in overall quality of life. HISTORIC VILLAGE
A Village Built on Local History
The name Ushers Ferry Historic Village comes from a real place along the Cedar River. Long before the village existed, the Usher family was among the earliest settlers in Linn County. In the 1830s, Dyer Usher established a ferry crossing that helped people, goods, and livestock move across the river before bridges were built. While the ferry itself is long gone, the site remains closely tied to the area’s earliest settlement stories.
The village visitors see today was created to preserve and share what life was like in rural Iowa between 1890 and 1910. None of the buildings originally stood together as a town, yet each was relocated to reflect the kinds of places that shaped early communities. The Henry and Maria Usher home, built near the original ferry landing and later moved across the river, returned to the site in 1983 and remains a central part of the village.
Established in the 1970s and opened to the public in 1975, Ushers Ferry Historic Village was designed as a place to experience history, not just read about it. Set near the Cedar River, an area long used as a gathering place by Native Americans and later settlers, the village highlights a time when communities were built around schools, churches, small businesses, and shared effort.
Today, Ushers Ferry invites visitors to step back, explore, and connect with the everyday stories that helped shape Cedar Rapids and Eastern Iowa.
