Dear Neighbors & Friends:

Welcome to this month’s newsletter!

A few updates, the striping has been completed on Lea Street and Canyon Street. We are looking forward to more updates around town. Solid Waste specifically has some exciting new projects, which are featured in April’s Newsletter. As many of you may have seen, I attended the ribbon cutting for the new Goodwill Store a few weeks ago. We encourage you to visit the facility once they officially open to the public on April 9th.

At the end of March, we celebrated WIPP’s 25th anniversary. At the celebration, there were representatives from the DOE, the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the State of New Mexico Environment Department, elected officials from New Mexico, regional and local elected officials, along community leaders and civic organizations. It is an honor to have Carlsbad be the host community for WIPP. Once again, I would like to express my gratitude towards all the women and men in our community who advocated for WIPP decades ago and the employees who made it what it is today. It is great to see so much support for our community from near and far.

On the 13th, there will be my first Mayor’s Miniature Golf Tournament, where I will be playing against Representative Cathrynn Brown. I have

immense respect and appreciation for her. Win or lose, I’m looking forward to going out there and having fun. There will also be an opportunity for others to compete in this tournament. The event is split into age groups: 6-8, 9-11, and 12-15 year-olds. There will be 1st-3rd place winners in each age group. If anyone is interested in participating, please call the Carlsbad Chamber at 575-887-6516.

Looking forward to the year, we have many exciting community events on the horizon. The Carlsbad National Day of Prayer Community Event will be on May 2nd at 7 p.m. at the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts Center. The committee hopes that as an evening event, more families will be able to attend. Entry will be free, but you can support local food trucks that will be on the premises starting at 5:30 p.m. We hope those who can attend will join us to observe this day as a community.

We have also begun preparations for this year's Independence Day Celebration. If any business is interested in sponsoring the celebration, we seek Gold and Silver Sponsors. For more details, you can call Valeria Quezada at 575-234-7955.

Sincerely,

Utilities- Solid Waste

The Solid Waste Department for the City of Carlsbad's goals are to provide efficient and reliable refuse service to the Citizens of Carlsbad. The City has been replacing our older fleet of refuse trucks with newer and safer trucks, not only safer for the drivers but also for the general public. The newer trucks are furnished with 360degree cameras that allow the drivers to see all the way around the truck for obstructions and persons.

The City of Carlsbad has started to use front-load trucks for our commercial routes which allows for larger containers which means fewer containers taking up valuable space at our commercial accounts. Since the City changed to residential rollout containers (96 Gallon Green containers) we seem to be able to provide faster service to our citizens. We ask everyone to place their barrels at the front curb line (or Designated Space) by six (6) AM on your day of pickup. We also ask that you give us a five (5) foot-clear space around the container, which means please do not place them near parked cars, mailboxes, and gas meters. Please also look up when placing your rollout, cable and phone lines seem to get taken down when placed directly under the "wires" We don't like damaging anyone's property. Also, if you are mobility impaired and cannot get the container to the curb line please call us at (575) 8850042 to make other arrangements.

The City has a free service to remove larger debris from your property as well. It is called "The Claw" or grappler service. If you want us to pick up the larger items such as tree limbs, large bags of leaves or grass, or any unwanted material, please stack them along the front curb line of your property and give us a call at "311" or 575-885-0042. Please make sure there is a five (5) foot-clear area around it. We don't want to grab a mailbox or gas meter by accident or damage landscapes.

DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT:
101 N. Halagueno Street, Carlsbad NM 10

The City has opened our "Convenience Station" down at 302 East Plaza to both City and County residents to allow for those who are doing large clean-ups of their properties (Spring Cleaning) to make a shorter trip than out to the landfill. We have had such great success with this. We are also having a "Household Hazardous Waste Day" twice a year now, usually once in the spring and once in the fall. This allows the residents that have waste products not normally to be disposed of in our landfill a safe and ecological place to bring them. Things such as old paint, fertilizers, oils, batteries, and even E-waste such as printers and computers. We also work with local law enforcement to provide confidential prescription takeback.

The City of Carlsbad is taking another look at recycling in the City. We are working on a plan and hope to have a clear path forward in the near future. We will let everyone know as soon as we can.

We ask everyone to "bag their trash" the best they can. Our automated trucks dump the containers into a hopper on the truck. If the trash is loose like plastic cups, food wrappers, and such, they can fly out of the container when it is being dumped in the hopper and make an escape before it gets compacted. It's a long 10-mile trip to the landfill and loose trash sure does like to be a fugitive reaching its final destination at Sandpoint Landfill.

If your roll-out container disappears during one of our spring wind events please let us know. We work diligently to find the strays and get them back to their homes.

The employees of the City of Carlsbad Solid Waste Department thank everyone for their help in "Keeping Carlsbad Clean". If you have questions, comments, or need assistance please give us a call at 575-885-0042.
