BUCKEYE CITY COUNCIL Eric Orsborn, Mayor Craig Heustis, Vice Mayor Michelle Hess Tony Youngker Clay Goodman Jeanine Guy Patrick HagEstad

From the Mayor

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who attended the Buckeye Air Fair over President’s Day weekend! It was an amazing event thanks to the hard work from city staff and our outstanding partnership with Copperstate Fly-in. Over 30,000 spectators watched the best stunt pilots in the country perform incredible aeronautics, cheered for their favorite pilots in the STOL Drag Races (short take-off and landing contest,) and explored a vast display of historic military vehicles. Plus, there were tons of educational seminars for pilots and hands-on aviation displays for students of all ages. In fact, nearly 1,600 students experienced a behind-the-scenes look at the Air Fair during the Field Trip Friday event. I could go on and on about the Air Fair, but there are so many other great Mayor Mayor things happening in Buckeye you need to know about. Jackie Meck Eric Orsborn Our award winning Finance Department just added another trophy to their display case. Recently, they were awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for this current fiscal year. This award is the highest form of recognition for government budgeting and demonstrates Buckeye continues to have strong financial management. One of my goals as Mayor is to bring all of our great communities together, no matter how much physical distance is between them. And there is no better way to explore our unique neighborhoods than on two wheels. Over the past few weeks, I invited all Buckeye residents to join me on their bicycles to enjoy a short leisurely ride with me through the communities of Tartesso, Festival and Sundance. It was a great opportunity to meet our neighbors, chat with each other, and enjoy a free Concert in the Park or the city’s Spring Festival event at Sundance Park. My thanks to everyone who came out and toured the city with me. It is wonderful to get to know you, understand your perspectives and learn how we can improve our community. I plan making this an annual event each spring, and hope you can join us as we Bike Buckeye. You’ll also want to mark your calendars for these other upcoming events - Help us honor our service members who paid the ultimate price for our country at the annual Memorial Day event May 30 at the Louis B. Hazelton Cemetery. The Buckeye Aquatics Center officially opens for summer Memorial Day weekend too. Then celebrate our freedom at our Independence celebration at the Buckeye Airport. Of course, your kids can have an action-packed summer with our Summer Recreation Programs. They can enjoy arts and crafts, games, sports leagues, swim lessons, cooking classes and a variety of field trips. You can keep up with the latest news and events, including the progress on the I-10 widening project between SR 85 and Verrado Way, by following me on social media, Facebook @MayorEricOrsborn or Instagram @city-of-buckeye-mayor.

SUMMER 2022

Skyline Regional Park Hot Weather Trail Checklist WATCH THE WEATHER

Hit the trails when it’s cool outside, try early mornings and evenings when there’s more shade.

BRING WATER

Hydrate before you go and bring plenty of water. Head back to the trailhead before half your water is gone.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY

Wear proper shoes, clothing, hat and sunscreen.

KEEP IN CONTACT

Carry a mobile phone and tell someone your start and end times and locations if hiking alone. Better yet, grab a friend.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Do you have a medical condition? Choose a trail that is within your ability and your time in the park will be more enjoyable.

DON’T TRAILBLAZE

Enjoy the Sonoran Desert’s beautiful and undeveloped landscape, but always stay on designated trails.

IT’S WILD OUT THERE

The park is open and undeveloped desert with rocky terrain, snakes, and cacti. Look around you and avoid putting your hands and feet anywhere you cannot see. Observe wildlife from a distance and never approach, feed or follow them.

SHARE THE TRAIL

Follow trail etiquette with other users. In general, bike riders yield to both hikers and horseback riders; hikers yield to horseback riders. However, for all trail users, downhill yields to uphill.

The City of Buckeye is a proud provider of Starfish Swimming Lessons, a nationally recognized swim instruction curriculum! Starfish Swimming curriculum is designed for students’ ages 6 - months to adult. Benchmarks are established at each stage in the program that combine both swimming and safety skills. Students participate in experiential learning activities that allow them to explore the water in a creative and comfortable environment. Correct swimming techniques are taught from the very beginning, providing an easy transition to swim team.

StarBabies™ (Adult and infant ages 6 – 18 months) and StarTots™ (Adult and infant ages 18 – 36 months)The purpose of

these courses are to develop in very young children a high comfort level in the water while at the same time training the adults who accompany them in water safety. These courses do not teach children to become accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water; it does provide a confidence-building, fun, and loving experience. One adult must be in the water with each child. Swim diapers required.

Starfish Swim School ® for Preschoolers (Ages 3 – 5) Designed to meet the needs of children ages 3 to 5, this course

will develop a high comfort level in the water and a readiness to swim, and for those children who are developmentally ready, it will teach functional swim skills. This class approaches teaching swimming through creative, fun activities in the water. Students work toward developing the five competencies and progress toward achieving the benchmarks at their own pace in a small-group setting.

Starfish Swim School ® for Youth (Ages 6 – 12) Students work toward development of the five core swimming competencies using age-appropriate learning activities. Learning is self-paced but challenging.

Starfish Swim School ® for Teens and Adults (Teens ages 13+ and Adults ages 18+) This

course is designed to improve comfort and skill in the water, regardless of past swimming experience. Students work toward developing the five basic core swimming competencies using principles of adult learning

Starfish Stroke School™ (This course is for students of all ages who have achieved the green Swim School benchmarks.) Students refine freestyle (White) and learn stroke technique for backstroke (Red), butterfly (Yellow), breaststroke (Blue), and develop endurance (Green). Swim Team Conditioning This course is for students ages 9-18 yrs who have achieved

the green Swim School benchmarks, have been on our Buckeye Bullfrogs swim team or swim on a club team.
