Celebrate Older Americans Month

at the MAYC

"Laughter is timeless. Imagination has no age. And dreams are forever." – Walt Disney In the month of May we celebrate Older Americans Month. It is an opportunity to encourage the observance of the contributions of older adults. It is more than just history; it is a celebration of all we can learn from our elders and their experiences.

Each year’s theme is different, in 2025 we will Flip the Script on Aging. This theme focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging. It encourages individuals and communities to challenge stereotypes and dispel misconceptions. This year, explore the many opportunities for staying active and engaged as we age.

It is vital we have a regular celebration of older Americans. It helps to remember to check in on elders, and plan activities to avoid isolation and focus on boosting the health and mobility of those young at heart. This is the goal of the Mary Ann Young Center each month, with extra attention during the month of May. First, we ask our seniors to provide feedback and help us pave the way for the year to come through the MAYC survey. Then, we plan a celebration to recognize those 80+ years young scheduled on Thursday, May 15 at 11AM with entertainment by the in-house ukulele band the Silver Ukes and lunch at Noon. Advanced registration required, call the MAYC at 763-785-9375

Bev and Merilee Flip the Script on Aging

Looking at aging like a game where we level up every year, we can improve our quality of life. That is just what Bev and Merilee did by understanding that it is never too late to learn a new instrument and it can offer numerous benefits.

Cognitive Benefits

Stimulates the brain, improving memory, concentration, and overall function.

Emotional Well-being

Playing music can be a source of joy, reduce stress, and boost self-esteem.

Social Interaction

Joining a music group can foster new friendships and social connections.

Improved Physical Coordination

Playing an instrument requires coordination and fine motor skills, which can improve overall physical dexterity.

Sense of Accomplishment

Learning a new skill and mastering an instrument can provide a sense of achievement and purpose. The Mary Ann Young Center works to create these opportunities to actively age by leveling up in a variety of areas. Along with the help of volunteers such as veteran ukulele players and teachers, Bev and Merilee get to enjoy every minute of their time spent with fellow music lovers learning something new. Join in on the fun Mondays at 12:30PM and Fridays at 9AM.

2nd Sunday of the month, 2-4pm North Metro Woodcarving Association Meetings
