The Three Ukulele Toms
Starting back in 2018, the interest began. A love of music was always there but playing the ukulele, that was something new. Picking up an inexpensive instrument and taking online tutorials created a solid base for each of the Toms. Keeping it simple with four finger chords allowed for the interest to grow and others to join in and learn to play. The love of all things ukulele began to quickly multiply.
Pushing through the difficulties of 2020, the group persisted with online meetings and social distancing when meeting in person was allowed again. Through the years the confidence to play the ukulele was built up and encouraging others became even more fun. Joining the group is easy with spare ukuleles and music books that are available for new members to try it out. The instrument is easy to learn and there is always a helping hand to get people started.
Together the three Toms have a mission for the ukulele groups, both beginner and intermediate. That mission is to have fun and be available to anyone interested in joining. Ukulele music brings the groups together weekly at the Mary Ann Young Center. The camaraderie of both groups is clear to see. The music starts and people come alive. Smiles fill the room. The Silver Ukes is what the ukulele players from MAYC call themselves. They travel to other senior centers, memory care units, and resident centers. The love of music brought the group together, the collaboration created a band, and now the possibilities are endless.

When a wild turn of events gives them the chance to take matters into their own hands, they set out to change the office and their lives for the better. With music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, 9 to 5 is a laugh-out-loud story of empowerment and unlikely friendship. Full of catchy songs, hilarious antics, and a message about challenging the status quo, this high-energy show celebrates perseverance, camaraderie, and standing up for what is right.

Jewelry Donations Needed
It is that time of year to request jewelry for the fall sale. Volunteers are standing by to sort, price, clean, and organize items for the next sale. Consider asking family and friends if they have items such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and such that you no longer want or need. Remember, one person’s discards are another person’s treasures. Just stop by the MAYC during business hours M-F 8:30AM-4PM to drop off jewelry donations.
The current MAYC jewelry sale leader is looking to train a new leader for this fun event held annually in October.
