DISC GOLF AT LOCHNESS PARK

Number of Holes: 9 Course Hours: sunrise to sunset

Disc golf is a fun activity for participants of nearly all ages and abilities. Simply throw a disc toward a designated basket and like golf, count one point for each throw. Lowest score wins.

Lochness Park’s disc golf course has three different tee boxes suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced players. Disc rental is available through the parks and recreation office. Call 763-7856161 for more information. Play is on a first come, first serve basis.

GEO-CACHING

Geo-caching is initiated by an individual hiding a cache, normally a waterproof container with small items inside, then recording the location with a GPS Unit. The cache may be in a hollow log or under an object. The individual then posts the GPS coordinates, along with a description of the cache on a web site: geocaching.com. Other individuals try to find the cache. When it is located, they sign a log book and take or leave a small item. They also post their find on the log book at geocaching.com.

Blaine Parks and Recreation has GPS Units for one day or weekend use. See rental form at blaineparks.com or come to the office for details and rules. Copy of driver’s license is required.

MUSIC TOGETHER

ages birth to kindergarten Music Together is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed early childhood music and movement program for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their accompanying adults. Sing, play rhythm instruments and move along with your child or children (siblings can be together in the same class) as you experience this joyful, researchbased curriculum that supports children’s cognitive, social, physical, verbal and musical development.

Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. They can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate with confidence, provided that their early environment supports such learning. Receive an illustrated songbook filled with music-making ideas and two new CD’s—one for home and one for on-the-go or grandma’s house, as well as a code to digitally download and/or stream the music.

Infants under eight months on the first day of the session are free with a paying sibling. The cut off birth date for infant siblings to be free of charge is those born on or after Jan. 19, 2016. PURE POMS AND CHEER

Pure Poms and Cheer is an exciting dance and cheerleading program for children ages 4 and older. This fun course will teach students popular cheers, changes, choreographed pom/dance routines, jumps, leaps, splits, basic tumbling, basic stunts, and many other skills required for school cheerleading and/or competitive cheer tryouts. Classes are taught by a coach with 20 years of experience. This program also promotes physical fitness, self-confidence, and teamwork. A group recital is performed on the last day of class and each student receives a medal and certificate. Other optional performance opportunities will be available. Amazing Athletes programs are specifically designed to enhance your child’s learning experience through movement.

Your child will learn the basic fundamentals and mechanics of 9 different sports while also building self – confidence, practicing teamwork, and improving their fine and gross – motor skills. Each class focuses on 2 different sports and incorporates activities proven to increase your child’s overall cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, hand – eye coordination, reaction time and more! Each class is six weeks long and runs for 45 minutes. Program held at Lexington Athletic Complex.

You and your child will have a great time decorating cookies for the holidays. We will supply one dozen cookies and all of the toppings! Bring a container to take your cookies home.

Tae Kwon Do is a modern martial art based on Korean tradition that incorporates techniques of kicking, punching, and blocking. Learn self-defense and controlled movements through sparring. Looking for something for your kids to do on MEA Break?

We have a fun-filled day planned! First, we will go to Pump It Up and bounce our way to a jumping good time. After an hour and a half of jumping, we will have pizza and a beverage. Then we will go to Anoka County Farms for pumpkin painting, hay maze, pony rides, inflatables, and much more! Lunch is included, bring a snack if you’d like.

Staff is well-trained and ready to make sure your kids have a lot of fun! Must fill out waiver form for Pump It Up the day of the trip. Transportation leaves from Blaine City Hall.

Join us for a great trip to the Minnesota Zoo and the Imax Theater. We will start our day at the Imax taking in a movie on the big screen. infant, child & adult This American Heartsaver four-hour course is designed to meet the needs of lay rescuers learning CPR to protect family members, friends and co-workers. ZENTANGLE

Zentangle is a drawing method that enables people of all abilities -- absolute beginners to accomplished artists -- to create beautiful images by using repeating patterns that have been deconstructed to make learning them a matter of applying focused attention and practicing rather than having specialized artistic skills. All Zentangle images are non-representational (abstract), though the patterns can be adapted to decorate recognizable forms, e.g., animals, botanicals. In this workshop, the emphasis will be on creating abstract images and the ways in which these are structured by using the basic elements of design, e.g., flow, direction, balance, size, and value. Using this approach, self-expression has a chance to blossom, while the kinds of negative self-judgments that tend to discourage creativity are minimized. During this series of 1.5-hour workshops, participants will learn the basics of Zentangle patterns and best practices for creating nicely balanced tiles. Participants will learn to draw 15-20 tangles (patterns) and complete five 3.5” x 3.5” Zentangle tiles, and three or four, 2” x 2” Bijou tiles.Class held at Blaine City Hall, Cloverleaf Room A. The man who made it happen was the “Father of Rock’n’Roll,” Sam Phillips, who discovered them all. This was the only occasion the four legends-to-be played together, and it has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time. From Prescott to Pepin, we’ll travel on Wisconsin Highway 35, positioned along the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin. We will a stop at Maiden Rock Winery and Cidery which offer a tasty experience with Country Charm where we will get to sample some of their products. We will make a brief stop at the Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birth cabin (weather permitting) and after lunch we will have some time to visit the Pepin Country Stop, an inviting market with lots to offer. Our next stop will allow us to experience the great wine tradition of Southern Europe at Villa Bellezza Winery and Vineyard’s. Jewelry of all types, shapes, colors, designs will be available at very reasonable prices. Proceeds go to the Senior Center for entertainment and activity expenses. Jewelry donations are being accepted now until two weeks prior to the sale. This is open to the public and all ages are encouraged to check out the great deals! Come one, come all!

Thursday, September 29 5:30 pm This popular evening dinner will likely sell out quickly on the day the tickets go on sale, August 24 at 8:15 am. Menu is a beef pot roast dinner, with all the trimmings, served family style to your table. Price is $8 per person. There is a 12 ticket purchase per person limit. Entertainment by the Four Plus One Band will be enjoyed throughout the meal.

Honor Veterans with us as local author, Mike Rinowski, presents on his book: “Harley Tracks: Across Vietnam to The Wall”. A job offer finds Mike traveling to Hanoi, Vietnam, arriving with his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Crossing Vietnam, a land of beauty, on his Harley Davidson, his awareness is raised to battlefield times, and to the men and women who lost their lives. Referred by other Senior Centers, this presentation promises to be both touching and memorable.

Tuesday, December 13 11 am The Center will be decked out in Holiday splendor in plenty of time to enjoy this lovely luncheon. Special entertainment by Vinnie Rose will start out the celebration, along with light party snacks, followed by a delicious noon meal. Register at least three days ahead for the event.

NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY

This wonderful, annual event will include new entertainment by one-man-band Dale Martell, and light refreshments. Please register in advance for the noon meal and plan on a great time! Our weekly “500” card group will begin at 1:15 pm instead of 1 pm to allow for adequate clean up time following this popular luncheon.

Thursday, November 17 5:30 pm Do you enjoy a good Scandinavian meal? Then register to join us for our annual Lutefisk and Swedish Meatball Dinner. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, October 5 at 8:15 am. Call the Senor Center for further details.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING REFRESHER CLASSES

These classes fill 6-8 weeks in advance, so plan accordingly if you need the 4 hour refresher. The cost is just $15 for AARP members and $20 for non AARP members. Advanced registration and payment are required.

Our Mission

The Parks and Recreation Department strives to provide community programs and services where unmet interests and needs exist, and to promote cooperation with schools, athletic and civic organizations, community agencies, and interested individuals in the areas of education, recreation and social and cultural pursuits.

Registration & Policies HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE

Visit the Parks and Recreation homepage at blaineparks.com and find the online registration link. A user name and password are needed to register; click on “Create an Account” Only credit card payments are accepted online. Online registration is available at no additional charge.

MAIL

Simply fill out the registration form provided in this brochure and send it along with payment.

DROP BOX

Place registration form and payment in the after hours drop box on the south side of Blaine City Hall. Registrations placed in the drop box will be processed the following business day.

IN PERSON

Residents may register in person at the Parks and Recreation office at Blaine City Hall, Monday - Friday, 8 am to 4:30 PM

NO PHONE REGISTRATIONS RESIDENTS Residents are defined as individuals living within Blaine City limits. Proof of residency may be required.

AGE GROUPS

Activities are designed to meet developmental guidelines of the specified age group. The Parks and Recreation Department does not allow children to register for activities above or below their grade/age.

ACCESSIBILITY

All programs listed in this brochure are open to people with disabilities. If you need assistance or inclusion services, please call 763-785-6164. Inclusion services must be set up at least three weeks prior to program start.

WEATHER POLICY

When inclement weather arises, parents or participants may go to blaineparks.com for the latest updates about programs and events being canceled, delayed, or rescheduled. Also during normal office hours (M-F 8-4:30 pm) parents or participants may call the Parks and Recreation office at 763785-6164 or our 24-hour hotline at 763-717-2709.

PHOTO POLICY

PAYMENTS

Photographs of program or park participants are periodically taken. These photos may appear in the local newspapers and/or Parks and Recreation Department digital and print publications. If you do not want your photo used, please tell the photographer.

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS!

Please notify park maintenance at 763-785-6165 about damage, vandalism or equipment cleanliness issues.

Cash, check and credit card payments are accepted. Specific modes of registration may require a certain type of payment.

Fees must be paid at the time of registration.

Some programs and activities may require a minimum number of participants. You will only be notified if the class/ activity is full or canceled. You will not receive a confirmation letter or call.

REFUNDS

Refunds are given if Blaine Parks and Recreation cancels the program or if registration fails because the activity is full. Participants canceling at least 7 days prior to an activity will be charged a cancellation fee as follows: $5 for programs costing $10-$99; $10 for programs costing $100 or more. Refunds will not be given for programs costing less than $10 or for cancellations made less than 7 days prior to the program start date. Trip refunds are subject to specific policies on a per-trip basis, based on advanced ticket purchases. Participants must contact the Parks and Recreation Department to request a refund.

Providers are welcomed to enroll children in activities.

Large shelters are available to rent for family or group gatherings. See page 3 for more information. All other shelters are first-come, first-served.

HELP END PARK VANDALISM

The Blaine Police Department and Park Patrol need your help to prevent vandalism and apprehend those who vandalize parks and recreation facilities. Vandals destroy what tax dollars have created. Costs associated with repairing vandalized property takes money away from recreational programs and facilities. Help stop vandalism. Always call 9-1-1 to report a crime in progress, including vandalism. To report a crime that occurred in a park but does not require immediate police response, call 763-427-1212. Calls are accepted 24 hours a day and you can remain anonymous.

Park Board Meetings

All participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times while participating, watching, or attending any program or activity conducted or sponsored by the City of Blaine Parks and Recreation Department. The following guidelines are designed to provide safe and enjoyable activities for all participants: • Show respect to all participants and program staff.

• Take direction from program staff/supervisors.

• Refrain from using abusive or foul language.

• Refrain from causing bodily harm to self, other

participants or program staff/supervisors.

• Refrain from damaging equipment, supplies, or facilities.

Failure to follow these rules may result in a suspension of participation. The City of Blaine Parks and Recreation Department strives to make your participation fun-filled, rewarding, educational, and safe. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Regular meetings of the Blaine Park Board are conducted on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 pm at Blaine City Hall. All residents encouraged to attend. Persons wishing to present a discussion topic should contact Parks and Recreation staff in advance.

Adopt-a-Park

Want to improve parks and trails? Consider adopting a park as a family, neighborhood group or community service organization. As a partner with the City of Blaine, your group can help accomplish needed park and trail improvements.

Fun and challenging activities may include monthly cleanup, planting flowers, creating new landscape features, or maintaining landscapes. Talk with others about taking on a project in your neighborhood. Contact 763-785-6164 for more information.
