Mary Ann Young Senior Center Update Work is set to begin on replacing the 35-year-old Mary Ann Young Senior Center in Aquatore Park. A new building will be built next to the existing facility. The new building will include plenty of space for the senior center activities as well as space for the general public. The new building will be almost 15,000 square feet and construction will begin this spring. The building is expected to be complete by November 2019. Final plans are currently in development and will be approved by the city council. The project will go out for construction bids in January.

All construction activities will be suspended during the Blaine Festival.

Community Garden

Community Garden Plots

Interested in gardening but live in an apartment or townhome? Perhaps your yard is too shady?

Consider renting a community garden plot. The Blaine Community Garden is located adjacent to Blaine City Hall’s south parking lot and consists of 56 plots. The city will prepare the soil for planting, mark each plot, and provide water access. Plots are approximately 15 feet by 20 feet; half-plots are 15 feet by 10 feet; and raised beds are 4 feet by 8 feet. Plots will be ready for use in early May. One plot per household. Registration forms are available online at BlaineParks.com and at Blaine City Hall.

Skaters will learn the proper way to fall and get up, marching, two footed jump in place, swizzles, standing on one foot and beginning of a two-foot glide. All students must dress for the weather, have their own skates, and wear a helmet (hockey or bike helmet). Single blade skates only (hockey or figure skates). April 1 - 27 at Blaine City Hall The Blaine Arts Council invites local teens to participate in the 13th Annual Teen Art Show. Showcase your talent and have your artwork on display at Blaine City Hall. Prizes will be awarded!

Information: • Open to any teen (grades 6-12 living in Blaine or going to a school serving Blaine residents.)

• Submissions can be dropped off at the Recreation Desk at Blaine City Hall, 10801 Town Square Drive NE between the hours of 8AM-4:30PM from March 18 - 29.

• One submission per artist.

• Art MUST be framed and ready to hang (hook on the back of it and either be hung with string or wire).

• All artists need to fill out a submission form (download at BlaineParks.com).

• Awards will be presented in each category and Best of Show. Participants will be notified via email of their awards.

Music Together is an award winning early childhood music and movement program for children from birth to kindergarten and the grown-ups who love them. Share the delight of making music in these joy-filled, research-based classes! Infants, toddlers and preschoolers participate at their own developmental level, sharing songs, instrument play, rhythmic rhymes and movement activities in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting. Classes are mixed-age so siblings can participate together.

Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. They can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate with confidence, provided that their early environment supports such learning. The Music Together curriculum supports children’s overall development—their cognitive, social, physical, verbal AND music development. Receive an illustrated songbook filled with music-making ideas, a CD with the song collection we’ll be using this winter as well as a code to digitally download and/or stream the music, a corresponding songbook, and a DVD and booklet introducing early childhood music development. Infants under eight months on the first day of the session are free with a paying sibling. The cut off birth date for infant siblings to be free of charge is May 5, 2018 for winter session and July 30, 2018 for spring session.

Camptastic Day Camp k & older

Camptastic is a great place for children to stay active and enjoy time with Fridays when they have days off from school.

They will participate in a wide variety of activities including open gym, crafts, interactive games, Ninja obstacles, snack time and more. Our gym has trampolines, climbing ropes, bars, beams, expansive spring floor space, foam pits, warped wall, rock climbing wall, a tumble trak and more. In addition to the above activities, for these camps children may bring a lunch or purchase one through us at the time of drop off.

Please also have them bring a book with each day as they will have some silent reading time. You also have the option to sign up for before and after care for any of the days, call Jam Hops to register for those. Children should dress in athletic attire - no zippers or snaps. Engineering: Crazy Gears & Wheels

Bring Star Wars inspired inventions to life — with the Star Wars Lego Mindstorms Robotics Developer kit. We will start with a simple droid mechanism and then move on to more ambitious droids that move and walk. This modular building system lets student’s build using subassemblies, making it easy to create and customize the robotic droids.

All these great robotic inventions are powered by the Micro Scout, the smallest LEGO microcomputer, equipped with light sensor, and six robotic programs to control our droid creations. Possible Models include Droid Vehicle, Trainer Droids, our version of R2D2 and more! This music tribute show is full of upbeat, honky-tonk hits like “Ring of Fire,” “Dukes of Hazard,” and “On the Road Again.” We have reserved great seats on the main floor for the 2PM show. Como Zoo Conservatory and Keg and Case Market

Beginning with the mysterious opening of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto and culminating with the heroic brass fanfare of Strauss’ tone poem, the Minnesota Orchestra illuminates the symphonic wizardry of these legendary composers. We’ll arrive at Orchestra Hall a bit early to enjoy complimentary coffee and a donut. The show runs from 11AM to approximately 1PM with an intermission. When the show is done we’ll hop on the bus for a very short ride for our lunch stop at Rock Bottom Brewery. The Mary Ann Young Senior Center is located by Aquatore Park just off Highway 65 and Cloverleaf Parkway. As a focal point for seniors, the center’s staff and volunteers offer a dynamic variety of programs and social events throughout the year. The Senior Dining Program offers Noon meals at a suggested donation of $4.00 for people age 60 and over, and a cost of $7.00 for those under age 60.

Please call three days in advance to register for the Noon meal. Van service is available for residents of Blaine to transport participants to and from the senior center for a cost of just $1.50 round trip. Stop by and visit the center during scheduled hours, or call 763786-9375 for further information.

Defensive Driving Classes These four hour refresher classes are held Monthly on specified Thursdays from 10:30AM - 3PM with a half hour lunch break, which is available at the Senior Center. These classes fill 6-8 weeks in advance, so register early!

The cost is just $15 for AARP members and $20 for non AARP members. Advanced registration and payment are required for the class and lunch.

Refunds Refunds are given if Blaine Parks and Recreation cancels the program or if registration fails because the activity is full. Participants canceling at least 7 days prior to an activity will be charged a cancellation fee as follows: $5 for programs costing $10-$99; $10 for programs costing $100 or more. Refunds will not be given for programs costing less than $10 or for cancellations made less than 7 days prior to the program start date. Trip refunds are subject to specific policies on a per-trip basis, based on advanced ticket purchases. Participants must contact the Parks and Recreation Department to request a refund.

Weather Policy When inclement weather arises, parents or participants may go to BlaineParks.com for the latest updates about programs and events being canceled, delayed, or rescheduled. Also during normal office hours (Monday - Friday, 8AM-4:30PM) parents or participants may call the Parks and Recreation office at 763-785-6164.

Day Care Providers Providers are welcomed to enroll children in activities. Parents must sign individual registration forms.

HELP END PARK VANDALISM The Blaine Police Department and Park Patrol need your help to prevent vandalism and apprehend those who vandalize parks and recreation facilities. Vandals destroy what tax dollars have created. Costs associated with repairing vandalized property takes money away from recreational programs and facilities. Help stop vandalism. Always call 9-1-1 to report a crime in progress, including vandalism. To report a crime that occurred in a park but does not require immediate police response, call 763-427-1212. Calls are accepted 24 hours a day and you can remain anonymous.

Age Groups Activities are designed to meet developmental guidelines of the specified age group. The Parks and Recreation Department does not allow children to register for activities above or below their grade/age.

All participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times while participating, watching, or attending any program or activity conducted or sponsored by the City of Blaine Parks and Recreation Department. The following guidelines are designed to provide safe and enjoyable activities for all participants.

• Show respect to all participants and program staff.

• Take direction from program staff/supervisors.

• Refrain from using abusive or foul language.

• Refrain from causing bodily harm to self, other participants or program staff/supervisors.

• Refrain from damaging equipment, supplies, or facilities.

Failure to follow these rules may result in a suspension of participation. The City of Blaine Parks and Recreation Department strives to make your participation fun-filled, rewarding, educational, and safe. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Regular meetings of the Blaine Park Board are conducted on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7PM at Blaine City Hall. All residents encouraged to attend. Persons wishing to present a discussion topic should contact Parks and Recreation staff in advance.

Adopt-a-Park Want to improve parks and trails? Consider adopting a park as a family, neighborhood group or community service organization. As a partner with the City of Blaine, your group can help accomplish needed park and trail improvements.
