Interested in gardening but live in an apartment or townhome? Or maybe your yard is too shady? Consider renting a community garden plot. The Blaine Community Garden is located adjacent to Blaine City Hall’s south parking lot and consists of 48 plots. The city will prepare the soil for planting, mark each plot, and provide water access. Plots are approximately 15’ by 20’; half-plots are 15’ x 10’. Plots will be ready for use in early May. One plot per household. Registration forms are available online at www.BlaineParks.com and at Blaine City Hall.

CHILDREN’S ART WORKSHOP FREE to grades K - 5 The Blaine Arts Council is celebrating Children’s Art Month by inviting area youth to Blaine City Hall to create a masterpiece under the guidance of professional artists. Children will create an original work of art using provided supplies. Artwork will be displayed at City Hall in March for public viewing. There is no fee, but register by February 20 to reserve your space.

Limited to 40 participants. Projects will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. Parents must stay with their children.

Music Together

Music Together is an award winning early childhood music and movement program for children from birth to kindergarten and the grown-ups who love them. Share the delight of making music in these joy-filled, researchbased classes! Infants, toddlers and preschoolers participate at their own developmental level, sharing songs, instrument play, rhythmic rhymes and movement activities in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting. Classes are mixed-age so siblings can participate together.

Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. They can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate with confidence, provided that their early environment supports such learning.

The Music Together curriculum supports children’s overall development—their cognitive, social, physical, verbal AND music development. Receive an illustrated songbook filled with music-making ideas, a CD with the song collection we’ll be using this winter as well as a code to digitally download and/or stream the music, a corresponding songbook, and a DVD and booklet introducing early childhood music development. Infants under eight months on the first day of the session are free with a paying sibling. The cut off birth date for infant siblings to be free of charge is May 5, 2014 for winter session and July 20, 2014 for Spring Session. Get active and have fun in this class. Students will learn popular junior high and high school cheers, chants, choreographed pom/ dance routines, parade marching techniques, and other performance skills. This program promotes physical fitness, self-esteem, teamwork, and learning from an adult role model. At the end, students will perform a group recital for families and friends.

Students will also receive a certificate and medal. Open house and registration on Tuesday, February 3, at the National Sports Center in the Schwan’s Super Rink Dance Studio. Dust off that guitar and come learn how to play it! Our lessons focus on having fun, learning and building skills.

Beginning group lessons are a great way to learn basic chords and instrumentals while having a good time.

Intermediate guitar is for those who have already learned the basics of guitar. Must have your own guitar (bring amplifier for electrics). Max. 10. Program held at Blaine City Hall Cloverleaf room. Register by January 16.

Tae Kwon Do is a modern martial art based on Korean tradition that incorporates techniques of kicking, punching, and blocking. Learn self-defense and controlled movements through sparring. In this 45 minute class, you will learn proper kettlebell technique for common maneuvers such as the Swing, Clean, Press, Snatch, Goblet Squat and more. Each week the class will be divided up between technique training and using those skills in a workout. The kettlebell is a cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonball with a handle, used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. Invented in Russia and used for decades by strongmen, kettlebells offer users a wider range of motion than dumbbells that sit in the palm of the hand, and they also better simulate the way we carry things in our daily lives.

The Senior Dining Program offers noon meals at a suggested donation of $4.00 for people age 60 and over, and a cost of $7.00 for those under age 60.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING REFRESHER CLASSES

These four hour refresher classes are held monthly on specified Thursdays from 10:30 am - 3 pm with a half hour lunch break, which is available at the Senior Center. These classes fill 6-8 weeks in advance, so register early! The cost is just $15 for AARP members and $20 for non AARP members. Advanced registration and payment are required for the class and lunch.

Specified Mondays, February 2 thru April 13 The Anoka County Retired Senior Volunteer Program is offering free income tax assistance on specified Mondays at the senior center. Registration is required and you must live in Anoka County to qualify for this free service. BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

The Parks and Recreation Department strives to provide community programs and services where unmet interests and needs exist, and to promote cooperation with schools, athletic and civic organizations, community agencies, and interested individuals in the areas of education, recreation and social and cultural pursuits.

Activities are designed to meet developmental guidelines of the specified age group. The Parks and Recreation Department does not allow children to register for activities above or below their grade/age.

Visit the Parks and Recreation homepage at blaineparks.com and find the online registration link. A user name and password are needed to register; click on “Individual Account Setup.” Only credit card payments are accepted online. Online registration is available at no additional charge.

WEATHER POLICY

When inclement weather arises, parents or participants may go to blaineparks.com for the latest updates about programs and events being canceled, delayed, or rescheduled. Also during normal office hours (M-F 8-4:30 pm) parents or participants may call the Parks and Recreation office at 763785-6164 or our 24-hour hotline at 763-717-2709.

PHOTO POLICY

Photographs of program or park participants are periodically taken. These photos may appear in the local newspapers and/or Parks and Recreation Department digital and print publications. If you do not want your photo used, please tell the photographer.

PARK REPAIRS

Please notify park maintenance at 763-785-6165 about damage, vandalism or equipment cleanliness issues.

PARK SHELTER PERMITS

Some programs and activities may require a minimum number of participants. You will only be notified if the class/ activity is full or canceled. You will not receive a confirmation letter or call.

Large shelters are available to rent for family or group gatherings. See page 3 for more information. All other shelters are first-come, first-served.

REFUNDS

The Blaine Police Department and Park Patrol need your help to prevent vandalism and apprehend those who vandalize parks and recreation facilities. Vandals destroy what tax dollars have created. Costs associated with repairing vandalized property takes money away from recreational programs and facilities. Help stop vandalism. Always call 9-1-1 to report a crime in progress, including vandalism. To report a crime that occurred in a park but does not require immediate police response, call 763-427-1212. Calls are accepted 24 hours a day and you can remain anonymous.

Refunds are given if Blaine Parks and Recreation cancels the program or if registration fails because the activity is full. Participants canceling at least 7 days prior to an activity will be charged a cancellation fee as follows: $5 for programs costing $10-$99; $10 for programs costing $100 or more. Refunds will not be given for programs costing less than $10 or for cancellations made less than 7 days prior to the program start date. Trip refunds are subject to specific policies on a per-trip basis, based on advanced ticket purchases. Participants must contact the Parks and Recreation Department to request a refund.
