Disc Golf at Lochness Park

Number of Holes: 9 Course Hours: sunrise to sunset

Disc golf is a fun activity for participants of nearly all ages and abilities. Simply throw a disc toward a designated basket and like golf, count one point for each throw. Lowest score wins.

Lochness Park’s disc golf course has three different tee boxes suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced players. Disc rental is available through the parks and recreation office. Call 763-7856161 for more information. Play is on a first come, first serve basis.

Geocaching

Geocaching is initiated by an individual hiding a cache, normally a waterproof container with small items inside, then recording the location with a GPS Unit. The cache may be in a hollow log or under an object. The individual then posts the GPS coordinates, along with a description of the cache on a web site: geocaching.com. Other individuals try to find the cache. When it is located, they sign a log book and take or leave a small item. They also post their find on the log book at geocaching.com.

Blaine Parks and Recreation has GPS Units for one day or weekend use. See rental form at blaineparks.com or come to the office for details and rules. Copy of driver’s license is required.

Parking permits are required for all Lakeside Commons Park users during the beach season. Permits are available at Lakeside Commons Park daily 10 am to 5 pm from June 6 through September 1.

Just when you think you’ve experienced every possible way to enjoy getting out on the water, here comes stand up paddle boarding! Fun, new, easy, cool, and a great workout! What else is there to say? Picture a beefed up surf board that is stable and a long canoe paddle to propel yourself. Class sizes are very small and the instruction is short and easy, so most of our time will be out on the water. No experience necessary.

Bike Helmet Fitting & Sales Events

The City of Blaine Safety Services Division wants to ensure the safety of bicyclists in the community. During the months of April and May we will be distributing AND PROPERLY FITTING helmets for our community.

Bike helmets will be sold for $13 each and will be available in a variety of colors and sizes ranging from toddler to adult.

All Bell® helmets comply with U.S. CPSC Safety Standards.

Bring the whole family; we will fit adults, too! Safety Services Specialists will also fit helmets you already own at no charge. No appointment necessary. While supplies last.

Night to Unite brings neighbors together in the name of crime prevention and community. Last year Blaine celebrated Night to Unite in style, with 108 block parties gathering to improve crime prevention awareness and build neighborhood pride and unity. Registration will be available on the city website beginning in April, or registration packets can also be picked up at the Blaine Police Department at City Hall. Registration is free. Early registration is encouraged to ensure a visit from a public safety official, McGruff the Crime Dog or Sparky the Fire Dog. Earth Day

Saturday, April 12 10 am - Airport Park FREE! Join us for our super spectacular spring egg hunt, followed by a prize raffle. Plastic eggs filled with candy are hidden on three different softball fields depending on your child’s age. Kids will have the opportunity to gather at least 8 eggs. Bags are provided. Little School

ages 3 to 5 Educational and recreational activities are designed to enrich and develop your child’s social, intellectual and physical growth. Your child will have a great time in this class. Each class will have an assistant, making the leader to child ratio even better. Children will participate in activities appropriate for their age level, like arts & crafts, story-time, nature study, safety, and creative movement. This class is designed for preschool children; those who have attended kindergarten are not eligible to register even if they fall within the age range. Ages as of 9/1/14. Children must be toilet trained.

Preschool

Music Together is an internationally acclaimed early childhood music and movement program for children from birth to kindergarten and the grown-ups who love them. In class, you’ll move, sing, play rhythm instruments and share 45 minutes of pure fun with your child each week for eight weeks while supporting your child's cognitive, verbal, physical, emotional, social and music development.

Families receive CDs and songbooks of the session’s song collection so the fun and learning continues at home. The cost for these materials is included in the tuition. All classes are mixed-age, so siblings can participate together. Infants under eight months on the first day of the session are free with a paying sibling. Mayer Arts Musical Theater Camps

The mission of Mayer Arts is to not only provide training for those who are serious about learning but also to offer classes that are tons of fun! We teach proper technique, terminology, body awareness, and an appreciation for the arts. Our goal is that students will not only find a love for the arts but also build healthy habits and self-esteem; skills that will be helpful to them for the rest of their lives!

Frozen

ages 4 to 8 For the first time in forever! We will dance and sing to music from Frozen and put together our own show! We will also make our own silly snowman crafts. No experience necessary. ages 7 to 12 Are you surf crazy? Come and show us what you've got in this fun musical theater camp. We will learn songs and dances from the hit Teen Beach Movie and put together our own show! Bring your enthusiasm and get ready to shine!

completed grades K to 5 Blast off on an out-of-this-world adventure to Play-Net Blaine.

Our playground program is coming to a neighborhood park near you. The Cosmic FUN Van will be landing with our highly trained recreation crew, taking kids on a quest for the best summer on Earth. ages 6 to 10 So GUITAR HERO and GARAGE BAND are exciting games for your child and are you wondering if your child is really serious about playing guitar? Babysitting Class

Adult Summer Co-Rec Kickball

Join our fastest growing sport and relive your childhood days at the playground. Gather family, friends, or co-workers for some recreational competition. Entry fee includes one ball and umpires. The league is a cooperative between the cities of Fridley and Blaine. Games are held at Airport and Aquatore Parks. Teams play doubleheaders each week for a total of 16 games. Register by April 25.

This is an informal approach to organized competition using a ladder style format. The league will place players of similar skills together and also allow them to play opponents who are more skilled. Leagues for men and women will be offered. First, second and third place trophies will be awarded to each league. Register by May 2, although players can be added throughout the season. Watercolor Landscapes

During this three hour workshop you will create an 8” by 10” torn paper collage. This will be ‘one of a kind’ and very unique.

Bring an idea, image, photo, sketch, or book. Have in mind what you would like to accomplish. Realism, abstraction, or something in-between will be the outcome. As you learn to tear, arrange, and glue many layers of papers, which are from all over the world, interest and depth will occur. Vibrant colors and many kinds of textures will make your composition come alive. Any person of any age or level of art experience can learn this process. Instructor will supply all of the materials.

Join us for the day as we take a step back in time and explore Lake Minnetonka. Our first stop is Charles H. Burwell estate on the north bank of Minnehaha Falls. A tour of the estate will showcase many original family furnishings. (Please note: 2nd floor is not handicap accessible). Next we will step aboard a historic Minnesota streetcar through downtown Excelsior. We will explore the streetcar barn and end our time viewing Lake Minnetonka’s shoreline.

A deli-style boxed lunch will be served on the Lady of the Lake Paddlewheel from the comfort of the climate controlled interior or the open air sun deck. We will be departing from Excelsior Bay and the Captain will share details of the breathtaking panoramic views and glamorous private estates. We end the day with a quick stop at Excelsior Farmer’s Market to stock up on delicious fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, flowers, honey and much more.

May Senior Safety & Wellness Fair

The Mary Ann Young Senior Center is located by Aquatore Park just off Highway 65 and Cloverleaf Parkway. As a focal point for seniors, the center’s staff and volunteers offer a dynamic variety of programs and social events throughout the year. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. The Senior Dining Program offers noon meals at a suggested donation of $4.00 for people age 60 and over, and a cost of $7.00 for those under age 60.

Please call three days in advance to register for the noon meal. Van service is available for residents of Blaine to transport participants to and from the senior center for a cost of just $1.50 round trip. Visit the Parks and Recreation homepage at blaineparks.com and find the online registration link. A username and password are needed to register; click on “Individual Account Setup.” Only credit card payments are accepted online. Online registration is available at no additional charge.

Drop Box

Place registration form and payment in the after hours drop box on the south side of Blaine City Hall. Registrations placed in the drop box will be processed the following business day.

Age Groups

Activities are designed to meet developmental guidelines of the specified age group. The Parks and Recreation Department does not allow children to register for activities above or below their grade/age.

All programs listed in this brochure are open to people with disabilities. If you need assistance or inclusion services, please call 763-785-6164. Inclusion services must be set up at least three weeks prior to program start.

Weather Policy

When inclement weather arises, parents or participants may go to blaineparks.com for the latest updates about programs and events being canceled, delayed, or rescheduled. Also during normal office hours (M-F 8-4:30 pm) parents or participants may call the Parks and Recreation office at 763785-6164 or our 24-hour hotline at 763-717-2709.

Photo Policy

Photographs of program or park participants are periodically taken. These photos may appear in the local newspapers and/or Parks and Recreation Department digital and print publications. If you do not want your photo used, please tell the photographer.

Park Repairs

Please notify park maintenance at 763-785-6165 about damage, vandalism or equipment cleanliness issues.

Park Shelter Permits

Some programs and activities may require a minimum number of participants. You will only be notified if the class/ activity is full or canceled. You will not receive a confirmation letter or call.

Large shelters are available to rent for family or group gatherings. See page 3 for more information. All other shelters are first-come, first-served.

Refunds

The Blaine Police Department and Park Patrol need your help to prevent vandalism and apprehend those who vandalize parks and recreation facilities. Vandals destroy what tax dollars have created. Costs associated with repairing vandalized property takes money away from recreational programs and facilities. Help stop vandalism. Always call 9-1-1 to report a crime in progress, including vandalism. To report a crime that occurred in a park but does not require immediate police response, call 763-427-1212. Calls are accepted 24 hours a day and you can remain anonymous.

Refunds are given if programs are canceled or if registration fails because the activity is full. Refunds cannot be guaranteed after deadlines or if the program has begun. Trip refunds are subject to specific policies on a per-trip basis, based on advanced purchases. Participants must contact the Parks and Recreation Department to request a refund.

Refunds will not be given after a program is complete.

Park Board Meetings Regular meetings of the Blaine Park Board are conducted on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 pm at Blaine City Hall. All residents encouraged to attend. Persons wishing to present a discussion topic should contact Parks and Recreation staff in advance.

Blaine Arts Council The Blaine Arts Council is a volunteer organization open to all interested individuals. Its mission is to promote, advance, and celebrate the arts in the community for the appreciation and participation of residents. The council sponsors ongoing art exhibitions at Blaine City Hall and organizes special arts events throughout the year. Council meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 PM at Blaine City Hall. Interested individuals are invited to attend a meeting and participate in events.
