Schwan’s USA Cup, 3M Championship Will Bring Many Visitors to Blaine!

USA Cup Blaine will become a popular destination again this summer as tens of thousands of visitors come to the city for two major annual sporting events. The popular Schwan’s USA CUP, billed as the largest soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere, will bring 13,000 players on more than 1,000 teams from 17 states and 17 countries to the National Sports Center from July 11 – 19. Special traffic controls will be in place on both 105th Avenue and Davenport Street near the National Sports Center. USA CUP has been selected by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the Norwegian Football Association and the Nobel Peace Center as the first international soccer tournament in the U.S. to embrace the Handshake for Peace, a gesture of sportsmanship by both team captains after each game.

3M Championship The 3M Championship will take place from July 28 thru August 3, at the Tournament Players Club in Blaine. This year Jack Nicklaus will make his 3M Championship debut in the Greats of Golf Competition. Also scheduled to appear are Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller and Dave Stockton, along with Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam. The Greats of Golf is a team competition teeing off after the regular field on Saturday, August 2nd. Public parking is available at the Anoka County-Blaine Airport. The tournament continues to be immensely successful in terms of both accolades and www.3mchampionship.com attendance. The 3M Championship won the prestigious Champions Tour Presidents’ Award as the best tournament of the 2009 season. In 2008, it was voted the No. 1 Champions Tour event by the golfers. The tournament will donate $1.3 million to benefit healthcare programs at Allina Health. The 3M Championship has donated over $21 million to charity since 1993.
