Our Mission The Parks and Recreation Department strives to provide community programs and services where unmet interests and needs exist, and to promote cooperation with schools, athletic and civic organizations, community agencies, and interested individuals in the areas of education, recreation and social and cultural pursuits.

Cash, check and credit card payments are accepted. Specific modes of registration may require a certain type of payment.

Some programs and activities may require a minimum number of participants. You will only be notified if the class/activity is full or canceled. You will not receive a confirmation letter or call.

Refunds

Refunds are given if programs are canceled or if registration fails because the activity is full. Refunds cannot be guaranteed after deadlines or if the program has begun. Trip refunds are subject to specific policies on a per-trip basis, based on advanced purchases.

Participants must contact the Parks and Recreation Department to request a refund. Refunds will not be given after a program is complete.

Day Care

Providers are welcomed to enroll children in activities. Parents must sign individual registration forms.

Age Groups

Activities are designed to meet developmental guidelines. The Parks and Recreation Department does not allow children to register for activities above or below their grade/age.

Participant Code of Conduct All participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times while participating, spectating, or attending any program or activity conducted or sponsored by the City of Blaine Parks and Recreation Department. The following guidelines are designed to provide safe and enjoyable activities for all participants: • • • • •

Take direction from program staff/supervisors.

Refrain from using abusive or foul language.

Refrain from causing bodily harm to self, other participants or program staff/supervisors.

Refrain from damaging equipment, supplies, or facilities.

Park Shelter Permits

All programs listed in this brochure are open to people with disabilities. If you need assistance or inclusion services, please call 763-785-6164. Inclusion services must be set up at least three weeks prior to program start.

Large shelters are available to rent for family or group gatherings at Aquatore (2), Lakeside Commons and Town Square Parks. A facility use application must be completed and rental fess apply. Applications, fee schedule and guidelines are available online or at the office.

Weather Policy When inclement weather arises, parents or participants may go to blaineparks.com for the latest updates about programs and events being canceled, delayed, or rescheduled. Adopt-a-Park Want to improve parks and trails? Consider adopting a park as a family, neighborhood group or community service organization. As a partner with the City of Blaine, your group can help accomplish needed park and trail improvements.

Fun and challenging activities may include monthly cleanup, planting flowers, creating new landscape features, or maintaining landscapes.

Park Repairs Please notify park maintenance at 763-785-6165 about damage, vandalism or equipment cleanliness issues.

HELP END PARK VANDALISM The Blaine Police Department and Park Patrol need your help to prevent vandalism and apprehend those who vandalize parks and recreation facilities. Vandals destroy what tax dollars have created. Costs associated with repairing vandalized property takes money away from recreational programs and facilities.

Help stop vandalism. Always call 9-1-1 to report a crime in progress, including vandalism. To report a crime that occurred in a park but does not require immediate police response, call 763-427-1212. Calls are accepted 24 hours a day and you can remain anonymous.

Park Board Meetings Regular meetings of the Blaine Park Board are conducted on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 pm at Blaine City Hall. All residents encouraged to attend. Persons wishing to present a discussion topic should contact Parks and Recreation in advance.

Blaine Arts Council The Blaine Arts Council is a volunteer organization open to all interested individuals. Its mission is to promote, advance, and celebrate the arts in the community for the appreciation and participation of residents. The council sponsors ongoing art exhibitions at Blaine City Hall and organizes special arts events throughout the year. Council meetings are the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 pm at Blaine City Hall. Interested individuals are invited to attend a meeting and participate in events. Barnyard Boogie ages 8 and under w/parent/adult

Interact with a donkey, pony, goats, sheep, rabbits, chicks and ducks! Wear overalls and get dancing to your favorite songs played by our family friendly deejay. Kids will also be able to make an animal craft and get an animal temporary tattoo! Refreshments provided.

A Morning at the North Pole

Pumpkins are hiding and waiting to be found at Aquatore Park! Children along with their parents, can search the grounds for one pumpkin of their choice, celebrate by dancing under the stars with our family deejay, make a S’more, and play Flashlight Bingo!

Fee includes a treat bag, one pumpkin, one craft, and refreshments. Come in a costume for our costume contest and bring a flashlight! Registration is required, Max.200. Event held at Aquatore Park. Registration deadline is October 21 or when spaces fill.

Winter Holiday

Spend a morning with your family at the North Pole! Don’t miss out on this memorable event! Fee includes a continental breakfast for one child and one adult, crafts for one child, and a visit with Santa. We will take a picture of your kids with Santa and email it to you OR bring your own camera for pictures with Santa. Extra adults may attend for $2 each. Preregistration is required and limited to 25 children per time slot. Event held at Blaine City Hall Atrium.

Celebration

all families & ages Join us for the 12th annual Winter Holiday Celebration at Blaine City Hall. There will be a variety of great activities for the whole family.

Enjoy holiday entertainment, stories, crafts, a coloring contest, live holiday music, hay rides, refreshments, and much more. All activities are free and run continuously throughout the evening. Santa will visit the event, but will not be available for individual visits or photographs. If you are looking to spend time with Santa, please register for A Morning at the North Pole. ATHLETES ages 3 to 6 Amazing Athletes programs are specifically designed to enhance your child’s learning experience through movement. Your child will learn the basic fundamentals and mechanics of 9 different sports while also building self – confidence, practicing teamwork, and improving their fine and gross – motor skills. Each class focuses on 2 different sports and incorporates activities proven to increase your child’s overall cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, hand – eye coordination, reaction time and more! A princess winds up on a deserted island where she befriends a panda, an elephant and a peacock! Come sing, dance and act out this fun story and create a musical! Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music and movement program for children from birth to kindergarten and the grown ups who love them.

Share the delight of making music in these joy-filled, research-based classes! Infants, toddlers and preschoolers participate at their own developmental level, sharing songs, instrument play, rhythmic rhymes and movement activities in a relaxed, playful, nonperformance-oriented setting. Classes are mixed-age so siblings can participate together.

Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. They can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate with confidence, provided that their early environment supports such learning. This curriculum supports children’s overall development—their cognitive, social, physical, verbal and music development. Receive an illustrated songbook filled with music-making ideas and two new CD’s—one for home and one for on-the-go or grandma’s house.

Infants under eight months on the first day of the session are free with a paying sibling.

The cut off birth date for infant siblings to be free of charge is Jan. 22, 2013. Visit a FREE demonstration class before the fall session starts to find out if Music Together is a good fit for your family.

in Real Life grades 2 to 6 All new builds and backdrops to chose from! Minecraft is the LEGO®-like sandbox building game, that’s been dominating the world of video gaming for the past few years. In our course, experience Minecraft in real life, building landscapes, mountains and terrains out of Legos.

Recreate the Nether, biomes, forests and more. Then working in teams use our Lego versions of creepers, endermans, villiage people, sheeps, ocelots, mummies to create a mini stop-motion movie to immortalize your lego creations on digital film. Take home two microfig Lego minecraft-inspired animals and your own minecraft movie, using official minecraft soundtracks and sound effects. Dust off that guitar and come learn how to play it!

Eqyptology grades 1 to 5

Use the right tools and participate in a Mad Science® archaeological dig for Egyptian artifacts right in the classroom. Enjoy the story behind the objects you find and then use them when you help wrap the mummy.

At that point, your team will construct a pyramid leaving room for the sarcophagus. Write a message with hieroglyphics to take home with the scarab you paint.

Tae Kwon Do is a modern martial art based on Korean tradition that incorporates techniques of kicking, punching, and blocking. Learn self-defense and controlled movements through sparring. Kettlebell Basics/Club In this 45 minute class, you will learn proper kettlebell technique for common maneuvers such as the Swing, Clean, Press, Snatch, Goblet Squat and more. The kettlebell is a cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonball with a handle, used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. Painting the Beauty of Winter in Watercolor Award-winning artist and the instructor for this class, Gail Speckmann, will explore with you the unique subject matter of winter scenes. COWGIRLS is a musical comedy that focuses on a trio of classically trained female musicians that is mistakenly booked to play Hiram Hall, a country western concert bar in Kansas. Volunteers of America Christmas Dinner Tuesday, December 10, 11 am The Center will be decked out in Holiday splendor in plenty of time to enjoy this lovely luncheon.

Special entertainment by female vocalist, Mary Hall, will start out the celebration, along with light party snacks, followed by a delicious noon meal. Register at least three days ahead for the event.

New Year’s Party Tuesday, December 31, Noon Special live entertainment will delight the crowd at 11a.m. as we enjoy party snacks and ring in the New Year at noon. Register at least 3 business days in advance.

Join the City of Blaine and residents from across the north metro for the 6th Annual Blaine World Fest celebration. This event is a great opportunity for the city to recognize and share its growing cultural and ethnic diversity. Bring the entire family and learn about different cultures through a variety of entertainment and festivities. Experience a wide array of music, dance, cultural learning booths, demonstrations, and delicious ethnic foods. Blaine World Fest has continued to grow with more than 1300 people enjoying this exciting and festive cultural celebration last year, and this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better. Be sure to bring a lawn chair.
