Black History Month

Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

Mayor Frank Scott Jr. made his mark in the history books by being the first elected African American mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas, being sworn in for the first time on January 1, 2019. He doubled his dose when he was re-elected and sworn in for his second term as Mayor of Little Rock on January 1, 2023. Mayor Frank Scott Jr. is a reflection of the diversity of Little Rock, and we are proud to be a city that represents the fruit of the labor of those that sacrificed, fought, and continue to fight for the equal rights and opportunity for all mankind!

BREAKING UP WITH STYROFOAM: A SUSTAINABLE SHIFT

In 2018, the City of Little Rock Board of Directors passed a resolution prohibiting the purchase of expanded foam products with City funds. This includes catering, office supplies, events, etc.

"Styrofoam" is one of the top ten most littered items. It does not biodegrade, but rather breaks down into smaller particles that pollute our natural and built environments. Styrofoam is made from the monomer styrene, which is a suspected human carcinogen and known neurotoxin.

Questions? Contact the Sustainability Office at recycle@littlerock.gov

RESOLUTION NO. 14, 896: NO STYROFOAM

TRENDSETTING CITY AWARD

CEREMONY

On 1/16, Little Rock was recognized during the Arkansas Business Trendsetting City awards presentation at the Arkansas Municipal League’s Winter Conference! In 2023, we became the state-designated local lead for early childhood education, launching programs to improve child care quality.

We supported 12 centers with business training and stipends, helping providers meet state quality standards and boosting reimbursements from Arkansas child care programs. These funds enhanced our resources, tackling challenges like limited child care slots and high costs, ensuring better access for Little Rock families.

Thank you to our Chief Education Officer, Jennifer Glasgow, for your leadership!
