I’ve been fortunate in my publishing career to meet some awesome people and this month I’d like you to welcome to our town Maddi and Lloyd. Its funny when you watch a TV programme each week then months later meet the couple in person, for some reason I felt like they were dear friends I had known all my life. Maddi and Lloyd were popular Queensland contestants on last seasons ‘House Rules ‘ run on the 7 network and as an avid viewer I was not alone in hoping they took out first place. Now with a new town, a new business and a baby on the way, the couple will need us to get behind them once again and make them very welcome. Read their story in this issue and make an appointment at Maddi’s new venture “Hypoxi” salon in Edgehill, it’s the latest equipment from around the globe to help with weight loss and overall fitness.

Maddi &Lloyd
calling cairns home By Michelle Dryburgh
They came into our lives, and living rooms, as contestants on the popular home makeover program House Rules. Now you’re likely to bump into them at the local supermarket or on the way to get your morning coffee. Famed couple Maddi and Lloyd have packed up their lives in Townsville and made the move to Cairns. CairnsLife Magazine caught up with the pair to talk about their new business venture in Edge Hill and other exciting plans on the way… Just twelve months ago Maddison and Lloyd Wright were a regular couple with regular jobs. Even when they were accepted as contestants on Channel Seven’s House Rules, they never imagined how dramatically their lives were about to change. “We can be in a supermarket just doing the grocery shopping and then feel eyes peering at us in the fruit aisle,” Maddison laughs. “We were even asked for our autographs in DFO the other day. I don’t even have an autograph!” The pair say nothing has been the same since the program went to air. “We went from living normal lives to being away for six months, travelling all over Australia and being on TV.
When we finally got home, we had a new house which was lovely, but it didn’t really feel like home anymore.” Their modest, weather-worn timber home was transformed into a show-stopper by the other contestants on House Rules. While extremely grateful for the beautiful makeover, the couple felt like they were living in a display home. “It became a bit of a tourist attraction. People would knock on the door on a Sunday morning and ask to look inside. It didn’t really belong to us anymore.” With a growing desire to be closer to family and plans to start a family of their own, they made the decision to put the house up for sale and move to Cairns, where PNG-born Lloyd grew up.

he 21st Century man is no longer happy to live in a simple cave and spend his days hunting and gathering in a dugout canoe using tools made of bone and wood. Nowadays, even the most basic hunting and gathering trips involve taking the 4WD for a spin, towing either the campertrailer or the flash tinny and drinking beer from the electric camping fridge. This modern and sophisticated new-age man has left his Neanderthal brothers behind and has become obsessed with high-tech toys that cost money and loads of it.
SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME WHEN THE ONLY THING A MAN HAD TO WORRY ABOUT WAS MAKING FIRE AND WHETHER OR NOT HIS FLINT WAS BIGGER THAN THE NEXT MAN’S, HIS DESIRE FOR BIGGER, FASTER,
Throughout the ages we have seen Pharaohs build bigger pyramids, Kings build bigger castles and Emperors build bigger palaces. There have been chariots and galleons and the constant urge for men to conquer the air, land and sea with big toys. Like most social species, humans have ways of determining social order and men are no different. A man’s toys is one way for him to display his status and the more he has, the more successful he is.
MORE HIGH-TECH AND EXPENSIVE TOYS HAS EVOLVED INTO AN OBSESSION.

With interest rates at a record low, men are finding it even easier to satisfy their desire to have toys and gadgets that are cutting edge and do cool stuff. From sports cars to drones, power tools to speedboats and Smart TVs to bikes, men dream of owning their own impressive collection of toys that will wow them and give them status amongst their mates. Even the most humble man cannot resist the secret thrill of owning the latest and greatest. It is said that the only difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys and for most men, their love affair with toys and gadgets starts from an early age. Little boys love remote control cars, video games, kid-sized tools and more, and big boys love full blown fossil-fuelled power machines – fast cars, fast boats, fast bikes. Nothing makes a grown man feel young again more than the excitement of owning his very own big toy.
EVEN THE MOST HUMBLE MAN CANNOT RESIST THE SECRET THRILL OF OWNING THE LATEST AND GREATEST.

PROTEIN POWER By Ana James So you’ve decided to commit yourself 100% to a healthier life, created fitness goals and have a mental image of where you see yourself physically in ‘X’ amount of time, joined the gym or hired a trainer, binned the junk food and walked gung-ho into the supplement shop to stock up on protein and pre-work out: Only to come face-to-face with the reality that you have no idea what Creatine is, or what the difference between Whey or Casein Protein is, and in fact haven’t done any research on what supplements you need to compliment your fitness goals.
Too embarrassed to ask the person who works there for a complete run down on what exactly all the mysterious powders and tablets in the shiny and suggestive packaging do, you buy the first moderately priced Soy Protein and slink out the door. In order to reach your fitness goals, the key is to be well informed and ‘Pick for your Goals.’ Are you looking to shed fat, grow muscle, bulk up, lean down, or get shredded and look cut? Base your supplements on what your fitness program and diet requires and EAT. No matter what your goal, nothing is better for you than the natural nutrients in real life food. When taking supplements and protein, drink plenty of water daily to stay hydrated and help with digestion and flushing. WHEY PROTEIN A good starting point that is usually budget friendly, Whey concentrate is one of the most basic forms of protein that is found in many protein tubs on the shelves of supplement stores. Whey concentrate is fast digesting and can be used both pre and post workout and as a snack between meals. Derived from dairy, this is not a preferred source of protein to be used at night. Some people may find that they have a hard time digesting the concentrates and will end up feeling a bit gassy and bloated and may be better suited to try a lactose free natural protein. CASEIN PROTEIN Casein is a slow releasing protein that provides your body with a steady flow of amino acids. Your body will breakdown the amino acids over the course of 5-7 hours, making casein shakes ideal if you wake up feeling famished or are usually a bit peckish before bed. Casein can be taken as a meal sub or filler snack during the day. Taking casein will keep you anabolic throughout the night and your body will absorb and utilize the protein and nutrients. This is especially important for those looking to build muscle and keep up mass. here is an upside to this obsession for women though and that is that the modern man has become just as obsessed with matching his image to his toys and has thrown the loin cloth to the rag bag. Now more than ever, the 21st Century man cares how he looks and is taking care of his health, hair and hygiene and make no mistake ladies, this recent trend for full faced beards that throws back to a more primitive era, is by no means a lack of care. It is in fact a carefully sculptured work of art that requires high-tech, state of the art equipment to keep it maintained and manicured.

e’ve all witnessed or experienced the dulling, spotting havoc FNQ sun can reek on car paint, (not to mention the Flying Fox ‘drippings’ for us Cairns residents) and a new coat of paint can be a pricey and unrealistic investment for older models. Vinyl car wrapping has fast become the choice alternative for vehicle owners, giving drivers the freedom to be creative with textures, colours and design schemes in a full or partial vehicle wrap. Used widely for business branding and advertising, this semipermanent option is now the go-to choice for exterior revamps

and gives vehicles the cover up they need, without the price tag afforded by a new paint job. Not only can vehicle wrapping give your ride a much needed or fresh face-lift, it protects your existing paint from chipping, fading, wear and tear and helps to maintain its residual value. If the wrap DOES become damaged, the area is easily replaced, as the vinyl is individually wrapped by section with the paint underneath completely protected. So if your car needs a makeover or you’re bored with it’s stock- standard look and want to add individuality, vinyl wrapping could be the fresh start you need to kick it into a new gear.

MARCIA EBDELL-BLANCH Hair Design With Tom it was time to inject some fun and cutting edge style. Tom has just returned from months in rural Australia working on Cattle Properties and Months of Self-inflicted Haircuts. Tom is a young good looking Man and now it is time to shine. We sculpted a sharp disconnected Mohawk Cut with a lot of weight removed and texture throughout. For added fun we hand Carved the hairline and some interior for an individual look.
Colour Specialist With Tom’s Colour we wanted to enhance and lift his natural. We used a Shoe Shine technique which filters highlights through the hair to give a Sun kissed Untampered effect, which is great for the guys. The result gives a brighter up lifted feel.

I LAR I A The Man Drought
We live in a paradise, surrounded by golden beaches, diverse wildlife, exotic plants and tropical warmth. But, I have learned that everything comes with a price. Sweet, succulent pineapple is covered with a spiky, spiny skin, every mango contains an awkwardly placed, oblong pit and bananas turn brown and unpalatable seemingly overnight, that is provided Panama Race 4 Disease hasn’t got to them first. In this respect, Cairns is no exception and it is with a heavy and somewhat melancholy heart that I can report that our city is in the grip of a fully-fledged fella famine. Correct, an ovary-pinching, companionship-challenged, O M G - I ’ m - a - wh i s k e r- aw ay from-crazy-cat-lady-status, man drought! Whilst I have the utmost respect for the online dating agency data and census analysis which revealed that cairns is, and I quote ‘man drought declared’, I decided to embark upon my own research into this matter. As a consequence I can confirm that women far outnumber men at The Lagoon, Abbott Street, The Red Arrow and beyond! I can also confirm that the manbun is rife and needs to be swiftly addressed but that’s a side issue.

Back to my findings please… Case Study 1: Jessica 28, Media Professional, Trinity Park. Jessica is a single, leggy blonde who enjoys going for long walks along the beach (alone), yoga and bar-hopping. She is well and truly over ‘the hunt’, and wants to settle down sooner than later. While she freely admits that she is picky (code for that she actually has standards), she told me that “In Cairns, there are lots of attractive women competing for a very small pool of eligible men.” Now, Jessica is clearly a better catch than the most impressive Barramundi, but she’s struggling to be snapped up herself. What to do?! Well, first and foremost, she and heaps of others like her deserve some respite and relief from this ‘bloke-barren’ land that she’s been living in, and to this end I believe that a certain shopping chain has been offering a special on electric toothbrushes for some time. However in all seriousness, one needs a viable strategy before one considers making the dreaded road trip south to Brownsville. For those of you who are mathematically inclined, dating is in fact a numbers game. In
other words the more men you meet, the more likely it is that you will find that special someone. For example, if you are in the vicinity of ‘x’ number of men that may result in ‘x’ number of coffee dates and so forth. All you need to do, is to increase the value of ‘x’. Essentially, you need to be prepared to attend the opening of an envelope. Try art gallery openings, bars, bookstores, school fêtes, hardware stores and while you’re there why not pick up a handful of cable-ties? In this current fella famine, if you’re half serious about meeting a bloke, you must be prepared to step out of your comfort zone. If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll almost certainly get what you’ve always got. However above all, irrespective of the outcome, enjoy the journey and if you can’t find a rose to smell, you’d better make do with our beautiful tropical blooms.

MacKillop Catholic College, Mount Peter, when complete, is expected to near St Andrew’s Catholic College, Redlynch in size with more than 1,500 students. The name of the college at Mount Peter pays tribute to Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop, now formally known as St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The Weipa school name reflects that of the Parish it belongs to, and honours the unwavering support of parishioners who have worked hard towards the school’s opening. The names of the new schools were announced in April by Bishop James Foley at a ceremonial sod turning on both sites to officially mark the start of construction. Both schools have been a long time in the planning and have the support of local communities. “The new schools reflect our faith in the continuing strong growth of Cairns especially in the southern corridor and our belief in Weipa’s ongoing role as a strong mining and service centre on Cape York,” Executive Director of Catholic Education Services, Mr Bill Dixon said.

SURROGACY
family matters a healthy child previously before it is prepared to assist with the conception. The intending parents and the proposed birthmother must be prepared for the complexities involved. The birthmother and her partner, as well as the intending parents, must each seek counselling. There is a requirement for both the birthmother and the intending parents to have independent legal advice. The costs of the counselling and the independent legal advice will be borne by the intending parents. The intending parents and the birthmother, as well as the birthmother’s partner, must enter into an agreement pursuant to the legislation before the pregnancy commences. The legal costs are the responsibility of the intending parents. The costs of the pregnancy, medical costs, pharmaceutical costs and hospital costs to name but a few will be met by the intending parents just as though they would meet those costs as if they were the birth parents. Some birth mothers choose to maintain close links with the intending parents throughout the pregnancy and allow them to be fully involved every step of the way. The degree of involvement, if any, in the pregnancy is worked out between the birthmother her partner and the intending parents. The birthmother always has the right to manage the pregnancy as if she was not a surrogate. When baby is born, the tiny bundle is considered to be the child of the
Breakfast in bed made lovingly by the children, maybe a little help from dad, thoughtful handmade gifts and cards and always lots of smiles and hugs. Mother’s Day is a joyous sentimental day for mothers all over Australia. This is a dream that is denied to many women who are unable to give birth for a variety of reasons and Mother’s Day celebrations can bring feelings of sadness and regret. A surrogate can help bring a new life into the world to loving parents who otherwise would be denied the opportunity of raising their own child. Commercial surrogacy is not permitted in Australia and the process of finding a surrogate mother is not an easy one, unless there is a close friend or family member prepared to help the intending parents. A couple who intend to use a surrogate mother to help bring their child into the world may not advertise for a surrogate and of course a woman wishing to become a surrogate may not advertise her availability. A surrogate mother helps bring this new life into the world, usually with the assistance of genetic material provided by the intended parents and with the intervention of and expert medical guidance of fertility clinics. There are quite strict criteria to be met before a woman may become a surrogate mother, including age limits, residency requirements and consent of her partner. A fertility clinic may also impose the need to have borne
birthmother until an application is made in the Supreme Court for a parenting order which may then be taken to the family court. The birth certificate will issue in the name of the intending parents after the order is made and baby is no longer the child of the birthmother but of the proud new parents.
If you are considering the use of surrogacy or assisted conception to bring the joy of having a child into your life, we have the expertise, the compassion and empathy to assist you through this exciting new stage of your life

Sculptural Felting & Two Dimensional Felted Landscapes
Encaustic - Produce a Body of Works
Enthusiasm and imagination are the best ingredients to bring along to this workshop. A progressive range of skills will be developed, so that the participant feels confident designing their own range of felt vessels and landscape images. We will explore different 2D & 3D sculptural forms, colour, design and conceptions of artworks. Topics will include: Collage and intuitive drawing as a design tool to create innovative forms and designs in felt (no drawing skills are required) Ways to form shapes and translate these into three dimensional shapes. Creating two dimensional landscape images, with felt and found objects. Using resists to take 2D into a 3D form. Using surface decoration such as free form stitching into the felt surface to enhance the pieces. Vessels will range from simple to more complex as we progress through the week. Participants will be challenged to play with their own designs using sculptural felt techniques. If you long to take your flat pieces of felt into another realm then this may just be the workshop for you.
This workshop will deliver skills to produce large-scale encaustic works. Students will cover the hows and whys of the production of a body of work for professional practice. Demonstrations and class exercises will be done in material application and how to apply this to develop your own body of work. Students will complete experimental material studies, draft studies for large scale and at least 3 large encaustic paintings, linked by process and content. Jennifer has been teaching parttime in the Visual Arts department of TAFE North for the past 8 years while maintaining an arts practice that ranges through encaustic painting to ceramics. Her teaching is hands on, with an analytical, critical focus to ensure students continue to develop their skills and understanding of practice, both theoretical and practical. Jennifer’s work is represented in several public and corporate collections including Cairns Regional gallery, Queensland Government Collection, Cairns Convention Centre, Shangri-La Hotel, Mercantile Mutual and numerous private collections in Australia and overseas.

PETER GRIFFEN - Acrylic - Colour, Abstraction, the Figure and Still Life - Take a Line for a Walk! Working in an abstract way from the imagination to start with, participants will experience total freedom in mark making, use of colour, texture and materials. Once this feeling of freedom is established, the figure and still life objects will be introduced. Freedom to explore will be encouraged. Anatomical detail will not be an issue at first, instead, “take a line for a walk”. Discovery will come from experimentation. One aim is to become familiar with the figure and still life objects and feel uninhibited in referring to them in drawing and painting. The other aim is to feel free to create images, which in themselves work in an abstract way and do not necessarily refer directly to any known subject matter. Participants may also work from photos and/or sketches, which they bring to the workshop, if they wish. Acrylic paint will be the main medium used but drawing, collaging, splashing, scraping, etc., and using any other materials will be encouraged. T MONIQUE DIMATTINA & JAMES SHERLOCK JAZZ UP NORTH 2015 FRIDAY 5 JUNE Combining a solid jazz/roots tradition with a distinctively Australian voice, this is a show that will mesmerise and delight. The superlatives run thick and fast when critics describe Monique DiMattina’s playful and inventive style. Words like ‘dynamic’, ‘astonishing’ and ‘sophisticated’ abound in rave reviews about this singer/songwriter who has played alongside the likes of Lou Reed, Bjork and Jimmy Cobb. Teamed with guitarist James Sherlock, this is contemporary jazz at its best.

HE distinct vocal stylings of Monique diMattina have earned this versatile musician a stellar reputation in jazz circles around the country. Heralded for her playful and inventive style, she is bringing her latest recording to Far North Queensland – accompanied by the well-reputed guitarist James Sherlock – for a special one night only show as part of Tanks Arts Centre’s acclaimed Jazz Up North Series in June. For lovers of jazz, and indeed any music, this is a show not to miss. Monique’s cheeky demeanour and her impressive back catalogue, including the latest Nola’s Ark (recorded in New Orleans) means you never know what to expect when watching her step into a live setting. For her upcoming show at Tanks, it will be a bit of eclectic combination of fun. “I’ll be the hybrid-Aussie chick wearing sparkles and playing piano, from Bach to blues/roots boogie,” says Monique. “James will be all cool and understated with his spiky clean hair look and a touch of quirky Kiwi, playing really tasteful acoustic guitar and raising an eyebrow now and then when the lyrics are cheeky. You can also expect to participate in a dynamic creative experience, when we all write a song together on the spot. I’ll be taking song ideas from the audience before half time, at which time, while everybody else is enjoying a relaxing bevvy

in the foyer, I’ll be sweating the new song out the green room! We play the audience inspired song first up after interval, otherwise, I would forget it.” Sharing the stage between Monique and James has created a fruitful musical relationship. They are currently putting the finishing touches on a joint album, due for release in the near future. “I love playing in duo because there’s more freedom and space in the air,” says Monique. “But some guitarists aren’t’ comfortable being so exposed, without the lovely comfy cushion that bass and drums provide. James digs the adventure though, and he’s great at the ducking and weaving required to keep the ball in the air, so to speak. Sometimes I’m singing and hardly playing piano, he’ll step up and drive the bus. Other times I’m smashing out more noise than a falling cutlery drawer, so he’ll tiptoe around me like a hen-pecked husband and try not to play too many notes.” Throughout her career, Monique has performed with the likes of Lou Reed, Bjork and Jimmy Cobb, so it is evident that an evening in her company will certainly be one to remember. Monique diMattina and James Sherlock perform at Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 5th June. Tickets are available through Ticketlink. For more information, please visit www.tanksartscentre.com

person when you work at an AMS. Taking the time to listen to your patients, yarning with them about their lives really shows you how much is going on with them and how your advice can fit in to that. Being around other Aboriginal clinicians every day gives me an immense sense of pride and I feel privileged to be a part of the Wuchopperen family.
Since I was in primary school I was always fascinated with the way the body worked and after initially being accepted into Physiotherapy I was offered a place in a bridging course at the University of Western Australia as a way to gain entry into the Medical Degree there. In addition to this I’d spent a lot of time in hospital visiting my Mum who suffered from Diabetes and Kidney Disease over the years and wondered why my Mum never seemed to understand what was going on. All these doctors seemed to be talking to her but they never seemed to take the time to ask how she was going or if she understood what was happening with her health. I took a bit of scenic route through my time at university, once taking 5 years off from the course to study other things – Japanese, Medieval History before returning in 2003 and finishing my degree in 2007. I spent three years then at Royal Perth Hospital before joining the GP training program and ultimately took the long trip to Broome to finish my GP training. After three years flying in tiny planes around the beautiful Kimberley region to community clinics I had the opportunity to visit Cairns in November last year and fell in love with both the town and Wuchopperen. Working in Aboriginal health is both the most challenging and rewarding type of medicine I can imagine. We have the opportunity to look at a person wholistically and address the entire spectrum of health and wellbeing for that
Wuchopperen Health Service has been delivering primary health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Cairns region since 1981. Our model of care is focussed on holistic health looking at the health and wellbeing needs of the individual, family and community to address physical, social, emotional, spiritual and cultural wellbeing. In July, 2015 we will be opening a clinic in Edmonton with Dr King our resident General Practitioner.

Scanned Alive Prostate MR Center of Excellence
multi parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) With the advent of multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) the ability to find prostate cancer early is significantly increased. The likelihood is that with early diagnosis there is a greater chance that the man will not suffer from prostate cancer. The “multi-Parameters” are as follows: The multi parametric MRI scanner has the ability to define the anatomy of the prostate and therefore show the distortion of the normal tissues as shown in the first image (picture 1). Diffusion Weighted Imaging or DWI is a method of measuring the movement of protons which are particles smaller than atoms as they move through water in the body. In cases of cancer there can be different patterns of movement which can be shown in picture 2. The cancer appears like a “black hole”. It is particularly useful for picking up more aggressive cancers but may also show non-aggressive cancers which do not require aggressive treatment and can be followed up with serial MRI’s instead. Dynamic Contrast Enhancement (DCE) is a method of showing the properties associated with the transfer of fluid between the blood vessels and the tissues themselves. This is affected by the blood flow and the “leakiness” of the blood vessels. Cancer can have characteristic changes which are different from normal tissue and can be shown in a 3D colour image as shown in picture 3. Unfortunately, it is still necessary to take samples of the area to be sure that it is cancer and what type. Usually, only one or two biopsies of the detected lesion under MRI guidance are required. This is carried out with the aid of a robot device which enables us to accurately pinpoint the lesion concerned. In fact, in 90% of cases MRI detects the tumour at exactly the right location and around 50% of the tumours found are non-aggressive
and do not need treatment. This process of imaging and diagnosis was developed by Prof. Jelle Barentsz at the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, The Netherlands and is now available in Cairns. In fact, there are only eight centers of excellence worldwide with the availability of this technology and expertise. It is important to note that the Dutch Institute for Healthcare Improvement (CBO) guideline 1.3.3.1.1 states that modern MRI is the best option for the detection of prostate cancer in the case of an increased PSA and a previous negative TRUS biopsy. Also, 1.3.3.1.2 of the CBO guideline states that an MRI must be done prior to treatment for prostate cancer. In addition, the MRI is able to detect signs that the disease may have spread to other areas using special contrast studies for that. It will be possible to carry out localised prostate cancer treatment using focal Cryotherapy to small lesions within the prostate without the need for major surgery. GRASS CAY GOURMET

GET YOUR MEAT THE GOURMET WAY There’s perhaps no meal as simple and satisfying as a perfectly cooked steak, for meat eaters anyway. And there’s plenty of those flocking to Grass Cay Gourmet at Portsmith to get their feed of award-winning steaks and other premium meat, game and poultry. Since opening its doors in November, The Grass Cay has become the go-to butcher for both grass-fed and grain-fed beef sourced only from sustainable producers. Aaron Black, Lavinia McLeod and their team specialise in Wagyu and Black Angus steak as well as gluten free sausages, and most of the marinades and seasonings used are also gluten free. “We have an extensive range of quality game products and Chef-inspired pre prepared menu items for people on the go,” says Aaron. The premium range is ideal for home cooks wanting to replicate their favourite recipes from television cooking programs, which Lavinia says is a fast-growing trend. “We serve our valued customers the same high quality products we serve the restaurants. Our motto as such is Why Eat Out?” Grass Cay Gourmet can also assist with catering needs and

supplies the food service industry, developing a wide range of unique and innovative menu ideas which further separate them from a traditional butchery. “Our in-house qualified Chef ensures our flavours are always fresh and evolving with new culinary trends.” Locally-sourced beef, pork and lamb is processed on site to ensure meat is served at the optimal time, maximising tenderness and flavour. All this from a six-month old, locally-owned and operated business with a team of knowledgeable staff including qualified butchers, apprentices and their own chef. “The most important thing to remember is the Gourmet in our name represents our products, not the price,” say Aaron and Lavinia. “We cater for all budgets without sacrificing on quality.”

RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL More and More Australians are discovering the benefits of renovating over relocating. Whilst many home owners have enjoyed the early years of their first homes, they are slowly realising that their once charming and maybe rustic abodes that their youthful budget could afford, is suddenly no longer the dream they once held. For business owners, a face lift or complete revamp to a tiring or dated work space can deliver a much needed image revitalisation that brings new customers, opens the door to new market opportunities and provides that “new start” feeling.
Despite the fact that the addition of small children is contributing to the “Home Sweet Home” bursting at the seams, many couples are conflicted over leaving their established gardens with perhaps the beautifully mature frangipani tree where evening aperitifs have been enjoyed. There could be sadness over leaving behind the established relationships with neighbours in the street, the friendship’s their children have made over street cricket and backyard footy. From a financial perspective, trading up can incur costs that could be more thoughtfully invested. Perhaps another floor on the
ground level house would provide those extra bedrooms, maybe revamping the kitchen for the French Provincial theme you’ve always craved. Maybe a pool or a patio to provide a beautiful outdoor oasis. Your working space is a reflection of your business and upgrading equipment and renovating to open up a closed- in or lack lustre area can be a way to give you added space and get better use out of the current one. Familiarity with customer base and within the community or lack of suitable available properties makes moving shop an an often undesirable or unrealistic choice for businesses.
The reality is that as time has progressed, your first house or office space that was perhaps in an area at the more affordable end of the market, has actually becoming quite valuable in terms of location, transport links, education and facilities. Maybe sitting tight and treating your existing space to a little revamp will actually serve your family or business well and financially for many years to come and build equity in an existing investment. The advantages to renovating are indisputable and there are professionals that can provide the expertise you require to create your net dream space.

CLIENT SAYS... We decided after 10 years of living in our home that it was time to create our dream kitchen. We contacted Russell because his history of award winning kitchens gave us the belief that we would get something special. When we first built the house we just wanted a practical kitchen to prepare meals for our new family and didn’t really put a lot of thought or money into it. Fast forward 10 years and now that we have a better understanding of how we live and entertain as a family we were ready to invest into the most underutilised space in the house that we believe will be our forever home. The design stage ended up being quite a long process due to us wanting to get it right and arriving at the showroom with a very long wish list. Russell was ever patient with us as we
deliberated over ideas, made a trip to the Sydney Home Show to take a closer look at certain products, and did a lot of our own research. During this process Russell suggested a couple of different design ideas and products to use which we were very negative about to start with but now they are actually some of the favourite things in our kitchen! These include the photo splashback, the Bora cooking equipment and the acrylic benchtops. Once Russell’s tradesmen turned up at the door the whole job just moved at a great pace as they worked efficiently and consistently. From Russell’s staff to the trade sub-contractors he used, they were always respectful of being in our family home and nothing was ever too much trouble. It is crazy to think how changing one room can make such a difference to your life but our new kitchen is a joy to be in and we are finding we are cooking even more and even the most banal kitchen tasks are a pleasure.
DESIGNER SAYS... When I was commissioned to design this kitchen and I visited the house, which is set in a stunning piece of tropical paradise in the foothills of Cairns, I realised that there wasn’t actually too much wrong with the existing kitchen. It was dated, had vinyl wrap doors, it had a big walk-in pantry which was an inefficient use of space, and a free-standing upright stove facing the wall, so it would have been considered a very standard type of kitchen for its day. I could see the potential to enhance the clients’ lifestyle, to be more social and family orientated. My suggestions to the clients were to get away from the old fashioned “facing the wall while you cook” situation, and experiment with the idea of having the cooking zone, and introduce a prep sink in the island bench. This configuration would allow sociability and interaction with family during meal preparation and cooking.
Best Renovation Kitchen over $20000
This then allowed us to think outside the box and have the main cleaning zone against the wall, because let’s face it, who washes up these days anyway?? We created the “L” shape which incorporated two massive family sized fridges, a pantry with 650nm deep slide out drawers, a wall-oven tower and then an appliance cabinet tucked into the corner. The back wall of the kitchen is feature-packed with a glass splashback containing an image of an area that both the clients grew up in, the photograph has special meaning to both of them. This is a wonderful way of bringing a real feeling of connection to their past, every time they use the kitchen area. There are overhead cupboards above the art-work which are a motorised lift-up Aventos system, where they are push activated and then a button is pressed to retrieve. The island bench in this kitchen is, without a doubt, the main feature. It is a “T” shape that has multiple things going on. For cooking you have a choice of the BORA range of products, including a Teppan Yaki bar, a down-draft
extraction system, and a full zone induction cooktop. Behind this is a secret panel with a motorised lifting mechanism to reveal a TV concealed within the bench, allowing the client to watch the news while cooking. This also revolves to face the table area so programs can be viewed while enjoying their meal. On opposite ends of the “T” are a bar fridge, and an oven, utilising every possible space. The table area on its own is totally unique. The bench-top is a brand new product called Ciment which gives a very organic, honed concrete finish. The timber panels cladding the table support structure are made from recycled boats, and give this kitchen an authentic mix of modern, rustic and industrial materials. The main bench-tops are made from an acrylic Himacs material chosen because of its hygienic seamless construction properties. In conclusion this space has been transformed to better suit the clients’ family and social life. It works successfully in conjunction with the outdoor areas, and has improved their lifestyle.

THE HOME BUILDING CONTRACT PROCESS.
In Queensland building contracts are available from Master Builders Association, Housing Industry Association and Queensland Building Construction Commission (used to be QBSA), and it is generally accepted that the builder will supply the contract. These contracts have had much time and effort put into them by each of these industry bodies to protect the interests of both builder and owner during the construction process. It’s there for everybody’s peace of mind when building your new home.
The residential building industry is changing and the governing body in Queensland, QBCC, now require prospective owners to enter into a Preliminary Agreement before signing a contract. According to QMBA ‘this preliminary agreement is not a regulated contract, but it should set out any costs you must pay to the contractor in performing the works listed in the preliminary energy rating or your home design’. These works may be many and varied depending on the design and construction of your home and allows the contractor to undertake work such as plans, site survey, soil test and building approvals. Any or all of these will be stipulated and the cost of the Preliminary Agreement is dependent on what work is to be carried out. What it also does is make sure that there is an individual site inspection on your land; meaning the builder will actually go to your land to determine what is suitable to build before you go to contract. It should also include a site classification leading to appropriate footing design by a registered, professional engineer. There is a great deal of information available regarding the process for building contracts. Try searching www. masterbuilders.asn.au , www.hia.com.au. and www.qbcc.qld.gov.au. This is an exciting time and your builder will be able to explain the process to you in clear, simple steps. If your contract is subject to finance there will be a time frame that you are required to obtain finance by and the builder will require a letter from the financier stating that funds have been approved for your contract. Your house will also receive a star rating and Energy Efficiency Certification. If you are building in the Hillslopes area in Cairns Regional Council then you will need to select your external colour scheme and some sub divisions

require a covenant approval by the developer. At this stage you can then sign your Building Contract as the builder has all the information to give you a ‘fixed price’ contract. Make sure you are comfortable with your builder/ representative as you will be working with them for a long time and this relationship is critical to your peace of mind. Ask the builder who this will be if it differs from the person that you signed up with or the sales person. Understand the timeframe involved in the preconstruction and construction processes and that way there shouldn’t be any problems along the way. Remember your builder has many clients so if you have any questions or are unclear on any of the processes ask your builder to explain it to you as a good line of communication ensures the smooth building process.
