A modern day Renaissance Woman, she’s a multitalented Entertainer, Professional Singer, DJ, Master of Ceremonies and Entrepreneur.

Photography by Mick Fuhrimann Writing by Stacy Wong

A

ndrea Mullens had never heard of Cairns when she first came to Australia. The Canadianborn performer landed in Australia on a working holiday visa, and had planned for 3 months travel. After enquiring about the country’s highlights at a travel agency in Sydney, she decided to make her way to Cairns as she learned it was the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Now, after meeting her husband Greg in Cairns, she’s an adopted local. “I met Greg at a BBQ through a mutual friend. It was actually by chance that I happened to go there that day,” says Andrea. Born to perform, Andrea is a Professional Singer, DJ and Master of Ceremonies, and recently starred in the leading role as Elle Woods in the successful Cairns Choral Society production of Legally Blonde at the Civic Theatre. Her credits cross all avenues of the

9

entertainment industry, including live concerts, film, television, theatre, music recordings, print and on-air commercials. She has toured internationally as Agnetha (the blonde) in the successful Tribute Concert ABBAMANIA, performed with symphony orchestras across North America, and had the great honour of singing for Andrew Lloyd Webber at the London Palladium. Andrea also co-owns 2 local businesses with her husband Greg, Cairns Premier Entertainment and www.australianweddingcapital. com, an online hub for tropical FNQ’s top wedding suppliers, and home of the Cairns Beach Cam – a webcam showcasing the beautiful Palm Cove beach and shoreline. After their own wedding 4 years ago in Palm Cove, the couple realized the untapped potential of Tropical North Queensland as a major world wedding destination, and later decided to launch the site to promote businesses to the national and international markets with the goal of enticing more weddings to our pristine region.

continued... Their Perfect Wedding in Palm Cove: Wedding date: March 21, 2011, 9:15am - This was the exact time of the Equinox and the first day of Spring in Canada; so it had special meaning for us.

What do you love about the location? The beautiful beaches, relaxed atmosphere, great little restaurants and cafés, with the stunning backdrop of lush green mountains and tropical islands not far away.

Most memorable moment: Surprising Greg in the middle of our ceremony with an acapella song, “At Last” by Etta James. It’s the first song he ever heard me sing, so I thought it was very appropriate. And also, seeing Greg arrive at the ceremony by boat, dressed up in his suit, looking very James Bond.

Perfect Partners in Business and Love:

Greg and I love entertaining in a variety of capacities from DJ & MC Services to Solo, Duo, and Band options for both weddings, corporate & private functions through our entertainment company Cairns Premier Entertainment. We particularly love entertaining at weddings; it’s an honour to contribute to making someone’s special day a memorable occasion.

What’s the outlook for Australian Wedding Capital? One exciting new aspect coming this year is a section of our website devoted entirely to Gay and Lesbian commitment ceremonies and future weddings, the Australian Gay & Lesbian Wedding Directory. This will be an outlet for same-sex couples to source suppliers that can assist them with planning their own special day and will lure more couples to North Queensland through the Cairns International Airport before or after visiting the Southern capitals. The Google Analytics are also showing amazing results and potential in just 4 short months. As of February 7, 2015, we are being found organically on the first page of Google for the search terms “Australian weddings” – a significant jump from page 5 just 2 months prior. It’s a great time for suppliers to get on board and signing up is quick and easy via the homepage at www. australianweddingcapital.com.

How do you balance everything with owning 2 businesses, and being a professional singer and entertainer? It can be very busy, but the key is time management. Making sure that you prioritize your time to what needs immediate attention and what can wait. It also helps that I love the work I do, and performing is what I enjoy the most. To me, that is my balance; doing what I love to do.

Get in touch with Andrea via www.cairnspremierentertainment.com.au or 0402 809 809.

WEDDING | VENUES

Choosing the perfect setting for your wedding is often one of the foremost and biggest items to check off your wedding planning list. The venue is the aesthetic foundation on which the style and overall ambiance of your wedding is built. Keep in mind that your wedding will flow more effortlessly, and your guests will be more relaxed, if the ceremony and reception are at the same venue. Photography & Writing by Stacy Wong

f you are in love with the idea of an outdoor wedding, Cairns Regional Council (CRC) offers idyllic locations to complement your style and host your wedding in its entirety: Cairns Esplanade, Cairns Botanic Gardens, Sugarworld Parklands, and Cattana Wetlands. “The beauty of Tropical North Queensland is its picturesque outdoor settings. Our venues offer immaculate grounds with divine views stunning beyond belief,” says Bell Faber, CRC City Venues Events Officer. “Because these are public venues, many people aren’t aware they can book the area for a private function. You can have your entire wedding, ceremony and full reception, set in any of our high-profile venues. “We offer a one-stop shop for your wedding, facilitating services and needs such as marquees, liquor licensing, catering, equipment, lighting and entertainment, or can work in with your preferred event company. Venues are available year round, and we have wet weather options if required. There is comprehensive access to power, water and all necessary amenities at the venues,” says Bell.

13

Cairns Esplanade presents an opportunity to make a grand entrance or exit for the bride and groom, as the Sister Cities Parkland is right next to GBR Helicopters’ helipad. The Esplanade’s central location and proximity to hotels also provides easy access for wedding guests. “The area can be cordoned off to make it private and exclusive. This private waterfront area can be enjoyed for your full function, yet there is enough space around that it needn’t feel closed off,” says Bell. The Cairns Esplanade and Cairns Botanic Gardens will spark imaginations as they present great photo opportunities, both day and night. These stunning venues transform into a night-time wonderland with potential for stunningly beautiful lighting displays. CRC City Venues can accommodate weddings small and large, from approximately 30 to 1000 guests. WEDDING | FIREWORKS

by Michelle Dryburgh

A

t four years old you stood wide-eyed and openmouthed mesmerised by the kaleidoscope of colour exploding in the sky. Just as you have every New Year’s Eve, show day and street parade since. How would you like to capture that magic with your very own fireworks display, personally customised for your wedding day? Whether you want to wow the crowd with an elaborate sky display or add just a touch of sparkle with subtle ground effects, Xplosive Art can tailor a package just for you. As the leading pyrotechnic specialist in North Queensland, the Xplosive Art team is responsible for designing and delivering fireworks displays for major events in Cairns and across the state. They’ve even picked up a major prize in an international fireworks competition and regularly travel abroad to offer our region the very latest in technology and special effects. But as managing director Mike Newman reveals, it’s the smallest events that deliver the biggest thrills. “There is nothing better than the enjoyment of personalising a wedding display,” he says. “It’s an honour being asked to enhance someone’s special day with a form of entertainment like no other. It excites people, and we love putting a smile on their faces.” With almost 20 years experience in the industry, Xplosive Art offers artistic flair, meticulous precision and premium safety standards, without compromising on quality. A three-tiered package option is available for brides and grooms wanting guidance with their display, or they can work

with qualified male or female pyrotechnicians in designing their own. Options vary from traditional ‘big bang’ fireworks to glittering ground displays reminiscent of a fountain or waterfall, indoor and stage effects, bursts of flame, coloured flames and even fire performers. Using world-class digital firing systems and industry-leading technology, the team can choreograph any display to a soundtrack for an extra special experience. And there’s a surprising amount of science and psychology behind their work. “Emotionally evocative music tantalises the senses while colour selection creates the mood,” Mike explains. “Colour can have a profound effect on how we feel both mentally and physically. For example, red is the warmest and most energetic colour in the spectrum. It can raise blood pressure and make the heart beat faster. We use this knowledge to build the display into creative scenes enhanced by multifiring techniques.” Music is selected to have high and low points, building anticipation and drama. “It takes three seconds to process visual stimulation, therefore darkness is also important when used artistically in the overall display in our choreography to create the mood. Ochre’s catering team offers faultless attention to detail, along with friendly and professional service. We work at a wide variety of locations and can assist with theme concepts, helping to manage your event,” says General Manager Carley Elsum. “We can offer a range of menu and beverage options as well as provide a wedding event coordinating service that will save you time and provide assurance that everything will be perfect. We remain flexible in our approach and can help with all aspects of your wedding reception.”

17

Testimonial “I had heard wonderful things about Ochre Catering and I was impressed by their food at a couple of events that they had catered. So when it came time to secure a caterer for my wedding, I knew that I wanted Ochre. Obviously wanting to make sure there wasn’t anything better out there, I had sourced a few quotes and assistance from other companies. When it came down to it, the service and food offered by Ochre was definitely the best value of all of the places I had contacted. Carley was an absolute dream throughout the whole process, assisting me with the whole package I required due to our venue being The Sugar Wharf, Port Douglas. Nothing was too much hassle for Carley and when it poured with rain the day before my wedding and we had to change our game plan to an inside function, I knew I could trust Carley to handle it. I left everything in her capable hands and I could not have been happier. In fact, I was speechless at how she had transformed the venue. I had so much positive feedback after the wedding from our guests about how delicious the food was and how impressed everyone was with the service and the venue overall. I cannot thank Ochre Catering enough for the absolutely outstanding job they did for us. Carley and the team were all absolute gems and if I could do it all over again, they would be the definitely be the ones I would call upon.” Written by Tamara - Bride

ESSENTIAL

BEAUTIFYING

FOR

THE

BIG

DAY

BY ANA JAMES

Even the most naturally beautiful of women will list hair and makeup high up on their Wedding To-Do list, with some of the more glam or self-conscious rating them as high or higher than the dress! From tresses to toes, make sure you look your absolute best by pre planning your beauty procedures and booking the more invasive ones well in advance. (Having bright red brow waxing patches during photos isn’t the best look.) And always tell your trusted or recommended stylists and artists what look you’re going for before the day. Take into mind the climate and location as well, to avoid a frizz disaster or makeup melt down.

UP DO’S, DOWN DO’S, WHAT ‘DO’ DO I DO?

Traditionally the Chignon, French twist, half-up half down and side ponytail reign supreme for Bridal hairstyles. Stylists have been giving these classics a makeover by adding technical braid details, accessories and going for tousled ballerina buns or edgy fishtail braids for longer lochs rather than traditional curls. Timeless favourites like Hollywood glam wave do’s and retro finger wave styles are back with a vengeance. You’ll see the flower crown also appearing more for beach side weddings alongside loose waves.

MAKEUP: ‘WEDDING WARPAINT’

Whether you’re going for the latest trending full on brows, face contouring and falsies, or a soft traditional look, keep true to yourself. While it’s important to have some depth and glam for photographs, you still want to look like YOU... The best version of you, that is. Match your shadow and blusher to suit your skin tone and add a pop of lip colour for personality. The drama and sexiness of a smoky eye and pale lip is a winner in the winter, with soft matte and nude tones for the hotter months. CairnsLife thanks Hannah Berry Hair for beautifying model Andrea Mullens with their hair and makeup expertise for this month’s cover!

So you’ve found “The One”, set the date and planned your wedding. Now it’s time to let loose and have some fun with your closest mates! But what to do?

Typically the Bucks and Hens parties are left to the Maid of Honour and Best man. You know the couple the best, so put your heads together, collaborate and create some fun filled memories that will last forever! Established since 1985, Barrier Reef Medical Centre (BRMC) is one of the longest standing medical practices in Cairns. With a strong commitment to General Practice, BRMC’s doctors provide quality care in all aspects of family medical care from newborns to elderly patients. Dr Debbie Richards, GP

“I enjoy all types of medicine, but my passion is for women’s health and paediatrics.” What influenced you to pursue a career in health? Brought up in a working class environment in rural UK, I aspired to study in London. My interest in the human body, combined with my fascination for the social complexities of people’s lives, moulded my career for holistic medicine. What do you enjoy about your profession? The challenge of working with each patient to optimise their health and social well being; as well as educating them to help provide better future health outcomes. To unwind, I enjoy… Yoga, water skiing, snow skiing and travel.

Dr Fiona Delaney, GP

“Making a difference in people’s lives is very rewarding. I am passionate about continuing care and getting to know my patients.” How do you balance work and family life? With three children – I work 4 days a week, during school hours.

Why did you choose a profession in health? My father was a GP in rural FNQ , so I followed in his footsteps. I was up for the challenge, and enjoy caring for people. When I get some time off, I most enjoy… Quilting, reading, horse riding and Taipans games.

Dr Katrina Marshall, GP

“The human body is extremely complex, and I find it fascinating.” How do you juggling a busy profession and your personal life? It is a constant balancing act as I do strive to be available for my patients when needed. What do you love about working in health? The huge variety of my work; I never know what’s going to walk through the door. In my free time, I most enjoy… Spending time with my beautiful family, and pattering around in the garden.

Dr Kirsten Due, GP

“A good GP has a wide range of interests and skills. However most GPs would have one or more areas of special interest; I’m particularly

interested in surgical dermatology and in psychological medicine.” Who is your greatest inspiration? I’m inspired every day by my patients. I am motivated by my patients both old and young to want to be a better doctor, a better person and a better communicator. How do you find balance working in medicine? There have to be priorities. My husband comes first in everything. I’m blessed to have a husband who supports me 100 per cent. On days off, I most enjoy… Thinking about the next children’s story I want to write, and exhausting myself trying to tame our rather wild tropical garden.

Marion Norrie’s career in health started when all she wanted was a bit of pocket money. She was familiar with Wuchopperen, having brought her children to the clinic for years. When she saw a posting for a cleaning job at Wuchopperen, she seized the opportunity to pursue career in health.

“Who would have thought that after a cleaning job, I would still be here 24 years later working as a floor coordinator in the clinic,” says Marion. As the Floor Coordinator, Marion provides day-to-day leadership, supporting the general clinic’s three buildings. She ensures the delivery of high quality care, and is an integral part of the support team at Wuchopperen, fostering achievement from within. Marion is also a trusted champion to clients as she is an advocate for the community and patients’ well being, facilitating optimal health outcomes.

“The main thing is trust. Our clients know me, and trust me because I strive to help and support them, as I would my own family,” says Marion.

In between being a cleaner and taking up a full-time position as a dental assistant, sitting on the Board of Directors at Wuchopperen.

“I love when I see clients, either at Wuchopperen or at the shops, and they give me the biggest smile or cuddle, or both; and they say to me ‘love you,’ or ask me for support,” says Marion.

What is your favourite hobby outside of work? My husband and I love fishing for the all-mighty barra. We go as often as we can to Cardwell, about 6 to 7 times a year.

Proudest achievements: Enrolling with the Bachelor Institute NT to complete my Diploma in Primary Health Care Practice in 2015. Dr Stephen King was a big inspiration to me to continue in the dental field, and supported me with my studies.

it’s about

helping people melanie mcauliffe M elanie M c A u li f f e P hysi o the r apy

Photography & Writing by Stacy Wong

When you suffer from a debilitating condition as a result of accident or disease, pain and immobility can severely hamper your quality of life. Physiotherapist Melanie McAuliffe specialises in treatment, prevention and rehabilitation in restoring and maintaining her patients’ physical mobility and performance. “Physiotherapy is more than just helping people to heal and ‘fix them when they are broken.’ It is about helping people to maintain a high quality of life and also about helping people achieve physical goals, which can have a wide effect on a person’s health and psyche,” says Melanie. “Physiotherapy addresses people’s physical health through designing programmes based on biomechanics and exercise, and using various therapy techniques. Despite what people think, there is not a direct relationship between pain, dysfunction and suffering.” What do you specialise in? My postgraduate studies are in Pain Management Medicine from the University of Sydney Medical School and a Certificate in Advanced Sports Physiotherapy from Curtin. My area of focus is Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. I enjoy the “generalist” scope of my practice that encompass these areas but am particularly fond of shoulder and knee injuries, surgery and rehabilitation along with anything associated with swimming, running, cycling or tennis. What influenced you to pursue physiotherapy? I remember distinctly that I wanted to be a physio by the time I was a sporting seven year old. I had experienced the usual sprained ankles and a sore back, so I was familiar with physio. I was always interested in the “why and how” things work, and remember thinking of treatment like a competition to get back to competition – the harder I could work, the quicker I could get back to the game. What do you love about your profession? One of the greatest assets about being a physiotherapist is the more you learn, the more variety you can have in your job. I can choose to spend some of my week in a pool conducting hydrotherapy, or in a gym giving out exercise programmes. I can also be in my practice treating with manual techniques, or doing a public speaking event,

31

or even at a pro-tennis tournament pressured to diagnose and treat on court while the crowd watches on. This is a fabulous profession for reinventing yourself if you wish. There are so many avenues you can take in the profession to completely change your job through post-graduate training. Who is your greatest inspiration? I find inspiration in the stories and outcomes of my patients almost every day – which is a reason why I find it easy to go to work. My biggest inspiration throughout my career has been, undoubtedly my parents. My mother, a retired nurse, spent a long time looking after me when I had a severe leg injury, which I was told had a pretty hopeless outlook of recovery. Through time and repeated massage, mobilisation of my leg and encouragement (and much tolerance), I was able to walk again and play sports. This validated my belief in physiotherapy techniques. My father is a GP who was awarded an OAM for his tireless services to the community to health beyond general practice. I have seen him read journals every night since I was a child, always dedicated to furthering his education, making me realise that you always have to learn. Few people would be lucky to have a mentor like him. He taught me that to be good at my job is asking the right questions, making sure my patients and I effectively communicate throughout the entire physio process. He also taught me to be humble enough to know when it is not your department and listen to your gut feeling. Over the years this advice has proven to be priceless. I hope one day I can consider myself to be in the league of them both.

March Health Check

Cairns Neurophysiology

National Epilepsy Awareness Month

It’s time to take a stand against epilepsy and dig out your best purple attire – March is National Epilepsy Awareness Month. This month culminates to International Purple Day on 26th March. Be part of the movement and help spread the word by wearing purple on March 26th. Our purple health hero of the month is Cairns Neurophysiology, educating us about epilepsy. “About 1 in 200 people have epilepsy,” says Dr McNabb, Neurologist. By Stacy Wong

What is Epilepsy? Epilepsy is due to electrical instability in the brain. Most attacks last only 1 to 2 minutes, but some seizures can be shorter (a few seconds) or continue for many minutes (status epileptics). Epileptic seizures can be generalised – affecting the whole brain, or focal – affecting particular areas of the brain. The manifestations of seizures depend on which brain areas are being driven by epileptic activity. Not everyone falls over and shakes in a seizure. Stigma & Discrimination Associated with Epilepsy: The unpredictability of seizures is one of the hardest aspects to deal with. We all go ‘unconscious’ every night when we go to sleep, but because it is predictable we are not bothered. Seizures make people lose awareness unpredictably, so even though they only occupy a tiny part of that person’s life, there can be a pervasive concern that a seizure ‘might happen at any time. Discrimination against people with epilepsy remains common, as people with epilepsy often report difficulty finding work if they declare their condition. People who have had seizures are not permitted to drive until they have gone a period seizure free - usually 6 to 12 months for a standard car license, and longer for commercial and

heavy vehicle license. This is to ensure seizures are under good control and the risk of a seizure behind the wheel is low. The current recommendations try to balance the safety of the community against the needs of the individual. But some patients find this very difficult. Who’s at risk? Epilepsy can come on at any age. New onset epilepsy is more common in young children and older individuals. Damage to the brain can cause epilepsy; so traumatic head injury, drug use and excessive alcohol can all cause seizures. Febrile seizures (fits in young children with fever) are fairly common in approximately 2 per cent of children, and 5% of these children go on to have seizures in adult life.

assessment at one the major epilepsy centres in Australia. Brain stimulation devices are an emerging treatment for epilepsy. Lifestyle factors are important. Avoid recreational drugs and alcohol excess. Patients with epilepsy need to take their epilepsy tablets regularly. Whether the cause is forgetting, neglecting or simply running out of tablets, a common cause of seizure recurrence is patients not taking their epilepsy tablets regularly. If patients are having trouble remembering to take their tablets, they should talk it over with their doctor. Sometimes medications can be taken once a day, which is easier to remember.

Changes in the genes can also cause epilepsy. Often this is due to the additive effect of many different minor genetic variations, rather than on major faulty gene.

Sleep deprivation can be a trigger for seizures in some people with epilepsy. Only 5 per cent of people with epilepsy are sensitive to flashing lights. This will usually become apparent during the initial investigations, which include an EEG brainwave test.

What can we do to prevent/manage epilepsy and seizures? People can injure themselves in seizures, although fortunately this is fairly uncommon. Around 70 per cent of people with epilepsy become seizure-free on medications. Epilepsy surgery can benefit those whose seizures are not controlled by medication. This requires comprehensive

Balance! Edmonton Family Practice
 Writing & Photography

By Stacy Wong

Diabetes is one of the most rampant health epidemics in Australia. Diabetes is a serious, yet preventable condition. The potential complications from diabetes can include heart disease, stroke, blindness, limb amputation, kidney failure and erectile dysfunction. However, most Australians are less concerned about diabetes and underestimate their risk of developing it. “What’s most alarming is the numbers. Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease condition in Australia. 250 people are diagnosed per day. Around 1.1 million Australians have diabetes, and another 2 million are probably pre-diabetes or undiagnosed,” says Dr Jack Hickey, a GP at Balance! Edmonton Family Practice. What do we need to know about Diabetes? The first thing is just, what is it? We tell patients it’s a processing disorder; the inability to process sugar properly. The extra sugar then leads to medical problems such as heart disease, blood vessel problems, eye problems and skin problems. Who’s at risk? Due to genetics, the biggest at risk category is Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Pacific Islander populations, who are 3 times more likely to get it than the non-indigenous population. The other at risk populations are: • people who are overweight • anyone with heart disease and/or high blood pressure

• if you have a family history of diabetes • pregnant women are at risk as well with gestational diabetes, which is what your GP should screen for during pregnancy What can we do to prevent/manage Diabetes? The easiest thing to prevent, is a healthy lifestyle. If you don’t have any medical problems, you need to: 1. Eat a varied diet – Avoid sugary diets, but you only live once – a bit of cake every now and then is good for your soul. Everything in moderation. 2. Exercise – If you’re not already doing it, maintain a healthy weight. 3. Don’t smoke 4. Moderate alcohol intake 5. Get a good night sleep But best thing to do is see your GP once a year to get a blood sugar test – it’s as simple as that. If you talk with your GP, there’s a lot of government funded health checks and yearly checks that the government pays for, if you fall into certain categories. Your GP can tell you all about government subsidised full health assessments.

Balance! Edmonton Family Practice is the Cairns GP Super Clinic, bringing together general practitioners, nurses, medical specialists, allied health professionals and other health care providers to deliver better health care, tailored to the needs and priorities of the community. Central Plaza Doctors Skin Cancer Clinic

D r Jay C awl e y Dr Cawley’s specialised interest is Dermatology, in particular skin cancer diagnosis and removal, tropical skin diseases and acne treatment. He has undergone training in Dermatological surgery and procedures by the Australasian College of Dermatologists as part of his Certificate in Primary Care Dermatology.

1 person dies from melanoma every 6 hours. That’s why once a year Australia unites this month to take action against Australia’s national cancer.

Dr Lee Jones Dr Jones’ area of expertise is Dermatology, in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment. He has undergone further training in dermoscopy and surgery and is currently enrolled in the University of Queensland’s, Masters of Medicine (skin cancer) program. He is also working toward the Certificate in Primary Care Dermatology with the Australasian College of Dermatologists.

By Stacy Wong

Central Plaza Doctors Skin Cancer Clinic undertakes comprehensive skin checks, including whole body checks with photography. Equipped with first rate operating facilities, Central Plaza Doctors can perform skin excisions and biopsies onsite. “Australians have the highest rate of melanoma in the world and Queenslanders are particularly at risk. Recent studies by the Royal Prince Alfred in NSW have shown that even a small amount of UV light (equivalent to just 6 minutes of summer sunlight) can increase risk of skin cancer. So Australians of all ages are at risk,” says Dr Jay Cawley. What do we need to know about melanoma? Melanomas most commonly present as a new or changing moles, but a lot of the melanomas that I have cut out were found on routine skin checks and the patient was not even aware that the mole was there. Risk factors for melanoma include sun exposure and a history of melanomas in the family. What is most alarming about melanoma? Melanomas are the most deadly skin cancers. More than 1000 Australians die per year from skin cancers and melanomas are responsible for more than 70% of these deaths. What can we do to prevent/manage it? Obviously prevention is the best method, so wearing sunscreen daily, covering up when outdoors and avoiding UV exposure between the hours of 10am -3pm are all essential. But even so, skin cancers can still occur so the next best thing is detecting them as early as possible so that they can be removed before they spread. That is where having regular skin checks is so vital. If we detect them early and cut them out, thats it, they are gone. But if we don’t get to them until late then they can be deadly. Cosmetic Treatment: The effects of skin cancer can be minimised and even concealed after removal with cosmetic treatments available at Central Plaza Doctors. Cosmetic services are affordable, convenient and comprehensive, and qualified cosmetic doctors undertake all treatments. The market-leading brand for anti-wrinkle treatment is used from $10 per unit. The Dermapen is the next evolution from dermarolling, and is a great treatment to improve the appearance of scars such as keloid, acne and surgical.

34

D r R ohi t G o e l Dr Goel is passionate about complete facial rejuvenation, including advanced anti-wrinkle and filler treatments. Trained in London, Dr Goel is a fully qualified General Practitioner, specialising in cosmetic procedures. He undertook cosmetics training with one of the UK’s leading Plastic Surgeons. His philosophy is always the “fresh and natural” look whilst keeping prices affordable.

OF THE MONTH

Q+A PALEO CAFÉ CAIRNS

Is gluten making you sick? Dietary gluten or wheat is often the culprit for causing a variety of unpleasant symptoms. Coeliac disease (gluten intolerance) is one of Australia’s most commonly under-diagnosed conditions. A simple gluten-free lifestyle change could be the cure if you suffer from coeliac disease. The 13th to 20th of March is Coeliac Awareness Week, so our 100% gluten free café of the month is Paleo Café Cairns. Luca Vergari, Owner and Manager of Paleo Café Cairns, tells us about the Paleo lifestyle, the benefits of going gluten-free and some menu favourites.

What is Paleo? Firstly, it is important to understand that Paleo is a lifestyle, not just a diet. This means not only eating well and giving your body the necessary fuel needed to get through the day, but also making sure you get enough sleep, exercise, playtime and laughter. When looking at the Paleo diet specifically, it means eating a good variety of lean meat, seafood, eggs, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and berries and avoiding dairy, grains, sugars and preservatives, which our bodies were not designed to digest. What are the benefits of Paleo? There are lots of benefits of adopting the Paleo lifestyle, including weight loss; better skin, teeth, hair and nails; improved sleep; balanced energy levels throughout the day; increased results from exercise; stable blood sugar; reduced inflammation and allergies; improved self-confidence and general wellbeing. Why are more people going gluten-free? I feel more of us are going gluten-free because we try cutting breads, pastas and cereals out of our diet and after only a short amount of time we notice massive changes in how we feel. Not only does it help with eliminating gut irritation, but also leaves us feeling less bloated and lethargic. After cutting out the protein gluten from our diets, it is hard to go back to all the problems that can come with eating it, so many are sticking to an 80/20 rule of eating gluten-free during the week and indulging in some of the things they love over the weekend. Your favourite menu item? And why? My favourite menu item would have to be the open Lamb Burger with a tender grass-fed lamb pattie on a toasted linseed bun layered with mint mayonnaise, wild rocket, tomato, onion, avocado and gherkin topped with a vibrant beetroot relish and served with golden sweet potato chips and lemon aioli. My mouth waters just thinking about it! Other popular menu items: • Everyone loves the Smashed Avocado and Eggs on Toast, which is served with fresh cherry tomatoes and drizzled with lemon-infused olive oil. • The Crispy Skin Pork Belly served on a warm roast root vegetable salad with a sweet balsamic dressing and a side of chunky applesauce has a loyal following as well.

Iconic musician Paul Grabowsky needs no introduction to jazz music fans, he is one of the most distinguished artists on the scene today. Sporting a new ARIA award winning album Paul Grabowsky and his Sextet are heading for Far North Queensland for a special show as part of the Jazz Up North Series at Tanks Arts Centre this March.

Concert-goers who frequent the Jazz Up North Series would be well-aware of Paul’s unforgettable showmanship. The revered pianist has performed at Tanks Arts Centre several times in the past and is looking forward to bringing his all-star brass and rhythm sextet with him for his March 20 show.

PAUL GRABOWSKY SEXTET

“I always love playing at the Tanks,” he says. “The place itself represents a piece of local history and is imaginative reimagining of wartime industrial infrastructure. I’ve played with various different groups, including my jazz project with Megan Washington and the Lost & Found Trio. The audience is always generous, enthusiastic and switched on.”

JAZZ UP NORTH 2015 FRIDAY 20 MARCH

This all-star brass and rhythm sextet brings a musical language developed over twenty years to the Tanks for an unforgettable night of contemporary jazz. Grabowsky, a distinguished artist, has won five ARIA awards, his most recent winning last year’s Jazz Album of the Year with his “The Bitter Suite” album, plus two Helpmann awards, several Ball Awards and a Deadly Award. This will be a fabulous evening to kick-start the 2015 Jazz up North Music Series at Tanks.

Audiences are certainly in for a treat as Paul and his sextet perform a collection of original contemporary jazz pieces from his recent release The Bitter Suite. “The band comprises of a group of players who between them represent much of the recent history of Australian jazz and contemporary music,” says Paul. “The music dates back to the summer of 09/10 and all the pieces were written quickly, one after another. They seem to me to be a new sound for this kind of group, with strong melodies over complex rhythms and harmonies, giving the players plenty of scope to stretch out and freely express themselves.”

Paul believes the music is at its best live. “The recording turned out really well and has been very well received, but I always think that jazz is best experienced live,” he says. “It is a player’s music, forcing the individual to constantly go for it, and that is what makes it so exciting for the audience.” As an artist, Paul Grabowsky is constantly evolving. Throughout his revered career he has won numerous awards, including ARIAs, Helpmann awards, Bell awards and even a Deadly. He’s been an international jazz pianist, a TV celebrity, festival directory and founder of the Australian Art Orchestra. He’s performed with many jazz luminaries including the likes of Chet Baker, Art Farmer and Johnny Griffin to name a few. After decades exploring his craft, Paul is still constantly expanding his repertoire. “Music is a metaphor for life and just as life is constantly surprising, so is music,” he says. “In life, we develop significant relationships and friendships, and music is no different. Some music is like an old friend, steady and reliable, and every so often some music comes into your life that challenges, surprises and delights you.” With this in mind, Paul encourages lovers of all forms of music to head out to the Jazz Up North Series event. “If you think you maybe don’t like jazz, it’s probably because you’ve never had the chance to hear it with fresh ears,” he says. “This band is bound to excite – so far it always has…” Paul Grabowsky Sextet performs at Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 20 March. The final dishes and designs will be presented at a Grand Final event held in Italy during Expo Milano 2015, where the winning entry for the S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2015 will be announced and a special prize awarded to The Best Chef/ Designer duo.

Head Chef Crawford is proud to lead a Winning Team Head Chef Richard Crawford – A World Class Chef

“I’m so proud of the amazing team I have at Salt House, we have been pushing ourselves to new heights and it really is a joint effort.

Dedicated to his craft in the kitchen at Salt House, is Head Chef Richard Crawford. This month, Head Chef Crawford will be competing in Melbourne as a Top 10 finalist in the S.Pellegrino Young Chef of the Year awards for 2015 in Australia.

Since I have started here, it has been a strong focus of mine to create a fun and creative environment where all of us can grow. In saying that, we feed off each other’s energy and all strive to be the best we can.

The candidates, chosen by ALMA Cooking School – the world’s leading international educational and training centre for Italian Cuisine – were hand picked from thousands of applications received from professional young chefs working in kitchens around the globe. The competition will be held in 20 different locations around the world, resulting in 20 Winners in each geographical area.

Our pastry chef, Rhiannon, is sadly leaving us soon for the international city of London to work in some of the top restaurants after winning a scholarship last year (winner of the Qld Overseas Foundation 2014 Baking Scholarship).

Then and Now “When I first arrived in Cairns, I wasted no time and came straight to Salt House. I knew this was the place for me. I took a couple of breaks over the years to try some different ventures, which allowed me to grow as a chef and connect with some amazing local talent – of whom I have brought together to create the “dream team” we have in the kitchen now. Not only the chefs but the local suppliers and growers along the way complete that team. I grew up in Tasmania, where I started my culinary training at a young age. In Tasmania, they celebrate local produce as a community and that is what I have been striving for here in Cairns. I was shocked when I first arrived to see local growers struggling to keep their farms afloat as businesses freight produce from Brisbane or even Tasmania! Working with small farms in Julatten and the Tablelands, I have witnessed small farms grow from market stalls to supplying almost 50 per cent of the restaurant in Cairns. For me there is nothing better than being able to see the product growing and knowing the people that are picking, catching or harvesting it. We can then pass the story onto our customers; what better way to enjoy your food than having it fired over locallycut iron bark timber on our wood fired grill.”

I myself feel blessed to be have reached the Top 10 for the national title of San Pellegrino Young Chef of the Year 2015. Watch this space as I compete to be No.1 in Australia!”

The 20 Winning Chefs will be paired with a young designer picked by Vogue Italia. These 20

A irborne 25 years, Independent Aviation is A ustralia’s leading air charter procure ment and manage ment specialist. by Stacy Wong

The charter professionals at Independent Aviation take control in navigating the complexities of the travel maze, providing a stress-free voyage. Independent Aviation provides customized service to cater to all individuals, groups and business needs, across Australia, throughout the Asia Pacific and beyond. “The company was established in Cairns in the late 80’s in response to demand from Government agencies and organisations that required assistance in coordinating aircraft charters throughout Cape York. Supporting two partners back in 2000, we have grown to a team of 12 dedicated professionals with a passion for aviation and everything that flies,” says Ian Button, Managing Director. “As a truly independent broker we offer an impartial and transparent service to source the most suitable aircraft at the most competitive price for every charter. With global reach and capability we are also experts in remote and regional destinations throughout Australia, using aircraft of all sizes and types for every kind of mission. We have an enviable reputation for providing prompt, reliable and innovative solutions to air transport problems.” “The aircraft charter industry is a complex, diverse and fragmented market – which is difficult for both buyer and seller to navigate. Our success lies in our commitment to honest dealings with both our customers and our suppliers to ensure a successful outcome for every request. We go the extra mile to investigate all opportunities to achieve value for money for our clientele and ensure that all their

expectations are met. Our suppliers know that our word is our bond; our bills are always paid on time!” As an active intermediary, Independent Aviation expertly manages the charter process to achieve the best result for clients in terms of both value and operational success. Over the last decade, Independent Aviation has developed the most sophisticated aviation database and reservations system of its kind in Australia. “The IAV system enables us to achieve major cost savings and increased safety compliance in air charter procurement. Many clients demand strict risk management procedures and our ISO9001 accredited systems enable us to ensure operator compliance with any safety criteria that a customer might require.” Ian says that one challenge is convincing new clients that their interests are best served by using charter broker. “When you explain that what we do is not dissimilar to a travel agent, or a mortgage or insurance broker, and we are acting on their behalf, they get it. Of course once they have dealt with our team and recognize not only the cost benefit, but also the time saved, they embrace us.” Independent Aviation is also the appointed aircraft charter provider to the Queensland Government. “In terms of daily aircraft movements, this is the most complex aviation management contract in Australia today. Our response to the recent flood and cyclone disasters, when we managed highly complex operations such as the aerial evacuation of entire townships was very satisfying.”

43

Ian is also proud of the role in saving lives when the company is called on to coordinate overseas medical retrievals and organ transfers. “People’s lives are on the line, and the successful completion of these missions is always a highlight.” What is the future direction of this soaring company? “We have some exciting new web technology we will be rolling out soon, and are keen to apply our model to become a one-stop shop for corporations and Governments seeking to simplify – and at the same time improve efficiency in their air charter procurement processes. We believe that there are many opportunities for organizations that currently manage their charter requirements internally to outsource to a specialist provider such as us at much lower cost.”

SECRET TO SUCCESS: Local knowledge, responding to clients’ needs, and honest dealings with customers and suppliers

to live and we want to be part of the reinvigoration of the region,” says Chief Pilot Casey MacKenzie. “Being a leader in aviation is never down to just one thing. But the most visible step has been our investment in the future. We have spent nearly $15 million dollars purchasing new state of the art helicopters in the last 18 months – In addition to the purchase of Heli Charters in 2013 and Cape York Helicopters in 2014. We also invest heavily in safety and staff training,” says Casey. Nautilus’ success rests on its dedicated team. How are the aviation industry and technologies changing? What do you do to stay ahead? The best analogy would be the comparison between analogue and digital. Helicopters have been making the slow switch to the digital age. We have jumped in and embraced this change whole-heartedly. We don’t want to be like other companies still flying helicopters that were built in the 1970’s.

“There is no secret to our success; it’s our people and working environment.

What’s ahead for 2015? There will be a couple of surprise announcements later in the year. I can’t tell you everything! Needless to say, it will advance the industry in Cairns and shake things up a bit. It is quite thrilling for Nautilus to lead the industry in the region.

Nautilus would be just like any other except that we have an amazing team with a common vision. If you love your job, it’s not really a job! You can’t fake quality or sincerity, and customers

Our Future is Taking Off

Since its beginnings al most 1 0 0 years ago , C airns Airport has grown to become one of the busiest regional airports in A ustralia . Photos/images Courtesy of Cairns Airport

It was 1914 when Cairns saw its first barnstormer style flight. By 1929 pioneer aviator Tom McDonald established regular air travel and the town’s first landing strip and hangar to service the isolated and expansive region of Far North Queensland. That was the birth of Cairns Airport. Today Cairns Airport supports diverse aviation services from the smallest pleasure aircraft through to wide-bodied international carriers. Around 4.5 million passengers pass through Cairns Airport each year and it is a vital component in the prosperity of our region. Cairns Airport generates 30,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region and $2.5B per year for our regional economy. To ensure the airport continues to provide this vital boost to Tropical North Queensland my aeronautical team and I maintain an ongoing schedule of activity aimed at attracting new airlines who can offer new routes for the city and encouraging existing airlines to expand the services they already have in place. We work closely with our key tourism partners, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Tourism and Events Queensland and Tourism Australia as well as regional partners such as Advance Cairns,

46

Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Cairns Regional Council. Our regular international network currently includes direct services to Tokyo, Osaka, Guam, Hong Kong and Port Moresby plus seasonal services to Auckland and Shanghai. Through our cooperative efforts we have had some really exciting news just lately. First was the announcement that the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, SilkAir will operate a direct service between Cairns and Singapore from 30 May this year. This was closely followed by Jetstar’s announcement of a direct service between Cairns and Bali, taking off on 29 March. Connectivity between Singapore and Cairns will make it even easier for international visitors to reach our holiday destination and for locals to travel overseas. It will provide vital links through to Cairns from Asia and Europe. I am sure many people living in our region will welcome the service as a convenient option to reach Singapore and beyond from Cairns, while the Bali service will be popular with locals heading off on holiday.

Cairns has just enjoyed yet another successful Chinese New Year in 2015. This holiday period stimulates an enormous amount of holiday travel by the Chinese and Cairns Airport works hard to secure flights direct from mainland China at this time.

With the Great Barrier Reef rating high on the aspirational travel list for Chinese people we have a golden opportunity to increase our visitor numbers from China. However with the stiff competition for the Chinese market from other destinations around the world, we need State Government support to build our marketing capacity and assist us to secure direct flights as well as Federal Government support to implement a smooth and user friendly visa process that makes it is as easy as possible for Chinese to holiday here. Just as we are continually working to increase our international connectivity we are also working to fulfil our development vision to take Cairns Airport’s facilities into the future. Our 20 year, $1B vision for Cairns Airport includes developing opportunities for diverse aviation enterprises to service our tourism industry, the Australian and Asia- Pacific resources sector and air cargo exports between Australia and key markets such as Asia and USA. The plan includes a purpose built Aviation Enterprise Precinct that will offer new and existing stakeholders a strategic opportunity to capitalize on global market and economic conditions, through a diverse range of aviation related activities.

47

There will be opportunities for aviation engineering and maintenance, international training and business centres, commercial flight simulators, avionics and component services, aerial surveillance, a helicopter precinct, freight and logistics centres and aeronautical catering. A Commercial Enterprise Precinct is also proposed. Again this will offer existing and new businesses with an ideal location featuring dual frontage of major highway and airside exposure. This precinct would be ideal for approved diversified retail and commerce developments such as an Asian-Pacific business centre, an E-commerce centre, a private hospital hotel, medical and tropical health facilities, a 24 hour supermarket a homemaker centre and Department Stores, luxury brands and high-end boutique duty/tax free shopping; and tourism & leisure developments.

If you would like to know more about how you and your business can be a part of the exciting development future of Cairns Airport please contact our GM Property Development on 4080 6780.

N ationally recognised as a leader in the field , Cairns Aviation S kills Centre ( CA S C) has over a decade of soaring success . C AS C is an award winning training centre for both do m estic and international students for e mploy ment in the aviation industry worldwide .

“The foundations for CASC originated from an Aviation Forum held in Cairns, in December 2000, by the Department of State Development. The forum addressed the problems restricting growth of the aviation industry in Queensland,” says Business Manager Chris Pigott. “The one common fact was the inadequate and out-dated training regime present at the time; and the high cost of sending new apprentices to Brisbane for the block release training.” “Following this meeting, several industry members put forward a proposed total change to the present system. This was trialed in February 2001 as a Certificate 2 pre-employment course, utilizing the facilities of the Cairns TAFE.” “In the proceeding next 2 years, the course was extended to a Certificate 4 course, while funding was raised to build and construct the existing facilities at the Cairns Airport. The first students commenced their training in this building in 2004.” “Today, we have proudly trained over 500 apprentices and 6,600 industry members over 20 countries through the world,” says Chris. Chris credits the success of CASC to the partnership with Aviation Australia, and the industry input and ongoing support from the very start.

“I believe the total number of students now trained and employed within the industry is something we should all be proud of. I believe future plans will only see the facility grow to something Cairns and Queensland can be even more proud of.”

Business Manager Cairns – Mr Chris Pigott For the past 30 years, Chris has been working in the aircraft industry throughout the Pacific. Chris has for the last 8 years been the Aviation Australia’s Business Manager for the Cairns Aviation Skills Centre. Chris has also previously held other senior positions in the aviation industry such as Director of Engineering for three major regional airlines. Chris is a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) licenced aircraft maintenance engineer, as well as a CASA approved maintenance Controller and Private Pilot. Throughout Chris’ career, he has been an active member of the aviation industry through his Chairmanship of the Australasian Aviation Group Cairns, as a Technical Representative for the Regional Aviation Association of Australia (RAAA) and as an industry advisor for both National Aeroskills, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority – just to name a few. Chris is also a proud member of the Management Committee for the Cairns Chamber of Commerce. H ow do you stay ahead in the aviation industry?

with changes in technologies and industry regulations/requirements. W hat’s ahead for 2015?

We will be working with the Cairns Chamber of Commerce, hosting a series of aviation forums to revitalise the aviation industry. We need to refine all aspects of aviation commerce in order to be competitive in the world market. We also expect increased international students studying in Cairns, and we are running apart from our local apprentice training two cadet programs from Airlines PNG and Air New Guinea.

Rhonda Coyne has always had a passion for dentistry and a commitment to helping others. As the owner of NQ Ortho, she is recognised as one of the leading practitioners in orthodontic care. She is also an Invisalign Elite Provider and Insignia orthodontist. On top of being a business owner, practitioner, partner and mother, Rhonda is also highly devoted to the community.

“My passion ultimately lies in making a difference in someone’s life,” says Rhonda. Using the very latest technology available, Rhonda ensures her patients experience minimal inconvenience and downtime. Her practices in Cairns, Atherton and Innisfail provide a relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere for clients. Rhonda and her team at NQ Ortho are focused on putting patients at ease and encouraging them to be an active part of the transformation process. Many of us still associate braces with those awkward teenage years, Rhonda being the exception. “My dad is an orthodontist and I actually liked having braces as a kid,” she says. Fortunately for us, braces have evolved dramatically over the last decade. Gone
are the ‘metal mouth’ and ‘tin grin’ days. With
modern day braces, people of all ages are choosing orthodontic treatment for beautiful healthy smiles. Rhonda also offers clear braces at no extra cost. Custom made braces and aligners are generated from a virtual 3D movie of the patients’ mouth so that the planned outcome can be viewed before treatment has even commenced. NQ Ortho also has an in-house orthodontic technician, and can provide same-day turnaround for appliances such as plates and retainers. “We work hard to treat our patients the same way we would like to be treated.” As a registered orthodontist, having completed an intensive three-year degree on top of five years study in dentistry, Rhonda provides clients with the best treatment options available. Rhonda regularly attends conferences to keep up to date with the latest advances in technology. She is also the Secretary of The Australian Association of Orthodontists Foundation for secondary education. “We have the fastest and most discrete clear braces. Invisalign gives our patients an unseen treatment experience with results that go beyond straight teeth.”

Breaking up is hard to do - and the breakdown of a relationship or marriage is one of the most stressful and traumatic times in a person’s life. NQ Family Law is a firm specializing in sensitive situations when it comes to family dispute. With 18 years experience in family law, Principal Deanne Drummond is committed to helping you resolve your family law dispute to achieve the best possible outcome in your unique situation. “Family Law is a very personal area. Each client’s situation is unique with different individual needs,” says Deanne. “When clients come to see me they are generally going through one of the most emotional times of their lives. It takes more than legal knowledge to help people through these difficult times.” “Empathy and understanding are also very important. I believe it is imperative to listen to what is most important to every client. I try to ensure that is at the forefront of my mind when I am devising options or solutions for each client.” “It is important in an area like Family Law not to make assumptions about clients, their goals and personal situation. After 18 years in practice I have seen an enormous range of scenarios from

separated partners that get on extremely well to clients who have been through a history of chronic violence and abuse. Some clients know that violence has the potential to get much worse following a separation,” says Deanne.

“It is important for me that I understand my clients as much as possible and that I propose options that best suit their needs and ensure that their needs are met into the future.”

How do you help clients through challenging circumstances? I see my role to inform clients of the various options open to them, advise on the range of possible outcomes and help them choose a pathway that best suits them. People cope with separation in a variety of ways, and you certainly cannot have a “one size fits all” approach. What works for one family, may be very unsuitable for another.

What is most rewarding about your profession? I enjoy working with clients to help them reach a resolution that is tailored to his or her particular circumstance. I enjoy making a real difference in people lives. Clients are sometimes very overwhelmed with emotions when they come to see me. Often I see them progress through their initial stages of grief over the loss of the relationship, and stress about arrangements for the children and financial situation, to finding a solution that helps them move forward and once again be positive about their future.

It is about having well-mannered conversations and coming across in a way that makes a great impression and when it comes to those very important business negotiations etiquette will give you the confidence to ’Seal the Deal’. We all know how important brand is. You are your own brand and it’s all about positioning yourself in the right market. In the business world we are judged by how we dress, eat and conduct ourselves. Managers that practice business etiquette garner the best from their teams. A study of work teams with rude leaders showed that these teams failed to

make progress - and members vividly recalled the leader’s rude behaviours, much more than his or her positive actions. Managers that are etiquette trained do retain talented people and set the culture and brand image of the organization. Business is about relationships, how we treat our colleagues, teams and customers is crucial for productivity. Studies conducted by Wil Felps, associate professor of behaviour management at Rotterdam University found that negative interactions can lower productivity up to 40%. And it works both ways if you are an employee, use great etiquette skills and you’ll get more from your manager too. There are millions of etiquette rules in the world. At E and M Etiquette we coach people in the skills that will give them confidence to conduct themselves in any business or social environment. So when it comes to sealing the deal for you, whether it’s getting the job or getting a promotion, at E and M, we know how to position you and your brand for success.

Prostate Cancer • The key to treatment is early diagnosis and that can be assisted by requesting a blood test • Many men can be treated and live a normal lifespan and good lifestyle if the condition is diagnosed early • Treatment can consist of simply monitoring the patient • There are also combination treatments

98 Spence Street Cairns, QLD 4870, Australia

More than 3000 men die from prostate cancer in Australia every year. One out of every eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes. The chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer is doubled if a man’s father or brother has been diagnosed. Of course the key to treatment is early diagnosis and that can be assisted by requesting a blood test called prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostate examination (digital rectal examination or DRE) where a gloved finger is inserted in the bottom to check for abnormalities. The PSA test measures a substance which is made in the prostate and is found in the blood stream. Not all rises in PSA are because of cancer. Some may be from infection or other reasons. If there is suspicion, the diagnosis may then be made by taking a sample with a fine needle called a biopsy. That enables the type of cancer to be identified in order to plan appropriate management. The good news is that many men can be treated and live a normal lifespan and good lifestyle if the condition is diagnosed early and appropriate management carried out. After the diagnosis of prostate cancer the treatment should be tailored for the individual. That is, to enable the man to live for a long time and a good time without the side effects of treatment being worse than the disease. Treatment can consist of simply monitoring the patient in the non aggressive form of the disease so that action can be taken if the situation changes and warrants it.

Alternatively, treatment may be surgery where the prostate is completely removed using a cut on the lower abdomen or with laparoscopic instruments or robot assisted laparoscopic instruments where the surgeon uses instruments attached to mechanical arms inserted through small openings 1-2 cm wide and viewed on a screen. Other forms of treatment may be cryotherapy (freezing), external beam radiotherapy and also brachytherapy where small rice grain sized seeds are inserted in the prostate to emit radiation directly in the prostate gland. There are also combination treatments. Sometimes it is necessary to lower a man’s male hormone (testosterone) level because most prostate cancers need that to grow. These days this can be done with tablets or injections given 4-6 monthly. Side effects of treatment can worry some men but all men should have full control of urination and hope to be able to achieve satisfactory erections for intercourse.

CAIRNS RADIOLOGY FOR Y O U R

BACK PAIN With time and the correct therapy, this pain will generally go away. Sometimes, the pain is more severe or long term. The good news is that many causes of back pain can be relieved with radiological interventional procedures such as CTguided facet joint or nerve root injections. What causes severe or long term back pain? The causes of more severe or long term back pain may be associated with a more significant issue such a part of the spinal structure pressing on the spinal cord. This can cause sharp, stabbing pain that radiates down through the back, or referred pain through your arms, hips or legs. Spinal ‘impingement’ can be caused by a bulging disc in the back pressing on the spinal cord or from a deteriorated portion of bone from the spine impinging on the spinal cord. What is a CT- guided facet joint or nerve root injection? For decades now, doctors have been injecting cortisone as an effective form of pain relief. With modern multi-slice CT scanners, Radiologists are now able to use CT to guide a cortisone injection to the exact location that is causing pain. The most

common site of injection is at the joint between two vertebral bodies of the spine known as the ‘facet joints’ and at the nerve root that branches out from the spinal cord. How is it done? The procedure takes about 15 minutes. Once the location of the cause of your pain has been established, you are positioned lying face down on the CT bed and the Radiologist performs the procedure under sterile conditions. Firstly, the skin is cleaned. Then a local anaesthetic is injected under the skin to allow for the cortisone injected to be guided in more comfortably. Finally the cortisone steroid is administered which is mixed with more local anaesthetic to allow for immediate relief as well as longer lasting relief. What are the results and are they immediate? The local anaesthetic can provide you with immediate relief but will most likely wear off later in the day. The cortisone can take several days to take effect but is designed to provide the long term pain relief you are after. How long varies from person to person but can typically last anywhere from a month to six months.

Where can I go to get a CT- guided facet joint or nerve root injection? Cairns Radiology, now with their DEFINITION FLASH CT, provides these services. You will need a referral form from your doctor and can book your appointment same day or soon thereafter. And when you have back pain, waiting days, even weeks to have the procedure done can seem a life time. Is it expensive? Not at Cairns Radiology! The service is bulk billed so there’s no out of pocket cost to you! Radiological interventions can help to relieve back pain. Most importantly, the Radiologist and your referring doctor will use the procedures effectiveness as a measure to determine whether the cause of your pain is the location that has been injected. This allows them to take the next step in deciding how best to treat your back pain. Cairns Radiology 4051 9729 admin@cairnsradiology.com.au

Dinner Theatre Cairns Dinner Theatre is set to unveil it’s first interactive show on March 13th at The Cairns Hilton Hotel entitled “Tony N’ Tina’s Wedding.” A unique blend of conventional wedding festivities combined with interactive dinner theatre where the audience acts as the guests to this outrageous Italian wedding gone horribly wrong. In a market flooded with reef tours and nightclubs, owners Brooke & Wes Evans set out to give the locals and tourists an alternative to the typical dining experience by opening Cairns’ only interactive dinner theatre. “By

producing multiple shows throughout the year we hope to keep our audience coming back again and again, we’re already starting to plan our next two shows and will continue to look for local talent to fill those rolls.” Says owner Brooke Archer. Brooke & Wes have both come from an entertainment & hospitality background, Brooke has travelled the world dancing in multiple touring shows and on cruise ships while Wes has had experience producing & directing theatre Off Broadway in New York and Toronto Canada. The

TEMPORA RY GRADUAT E V I SA FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS A student visa is a temporary visa that allows overseas nationals to travel to Australia to study at an Australian educational institution. Once here in Australia if student visa holders are eligible they may extend their stay in Australia for reasons such as further study, graduation, a holiday, work or even apply for permanent migration. The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) is one popular temporary option available to international students. The Temporary Graduate Visa allows international students to live and work in Australia temporarily after they have finished their studies. The visa class has two streams: the Graduate Work Stream and the Post-Study Work Stream. The Graduate Work Stream is designed for graduates with an eligible qualification, including those from the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, who graduate with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation

that is considered to be in demand in the Australian labour market. Applicants must have an occupation on the Skilled Occupations List (SOL) to be eligible. The Post-Study Work Stream is designed for overseas students who graduate with a higher education degree from an Australian education provider, regardless of their field of study. This stream is available only to applicants who applied and had their first student visa granted to them after 5 November 2011. The length of the Temporary Graduate Visa depends on the stream in which the student applies under. If applying under the Graduate Work Stream a visa is issued for 18 months. If applying under the Post Study Work Stream the visa is issued from two years to four years in length and is determined by the qualification level.

Completion of a bachelor, honours, or masters by coursework attracts a 2 year visa, masters degree by research attracts a three year visa and lastly a doctoral degree attracts a four year visa. To be eligible, Temporary Graduate Visa main applicants must meet one of the above stream requirements, be under 50 years of age, be in Australia, hold an eligible visa, have at least competent English language ability and meet a two year study requirement in the last six months. Visa applicants, including any accompanying family members, must also meet health and character requirements as well as hold private health insurance. When approved the Temporary Graduate Visa holder has unlimited work, study and travel rights and eligible family members can also be included in the application.

House training puppies requires patience and consistency from the owner. Pups do not intentionally make a mess in the wrong place and you must educate them which area is the acceptable place in your home to use as their toilet. Some puppies do not have full bladder control until 12-14 weeks of age or even older so always remember every pup is an individual.

Cra te training is one of the most effective ways to successfully toilet train your puppy. You can use a cra te for pups tha t live inside or outside. A cra te will also become their kennel and a place for them to rest.

Linda Mair (Trainer/ Behaviourist/ Canine Myofunctional Therapist) Canine Training School 0413656626 www.caninetrainingschool.com.au Linda conducts puppy and dog obedience classes at Earlville Vet.

Begin the crate training process as soon as you bring your puppy home. Never allow your dog to walk freely into all areas of your home, often when they are out of sight they will make a mess. Always feed your puppy in its crate. Remember give them enough food to be consumed immediately. If the food is not all eaten then take it away, your puppy is full. Allow 10-15 minutes after feeding then take the puppy outside on lead to the selected toilet area. Give the puppy time to go to the toilet and praise excitedly if they perform. If the dog doesn’t go to the toilet then put them back in the crate. Repeat the process until the dog goes. You can also incorporate a toilet “command word” in this process which over time will give you even more control of their toileting habits. Remember dogs don’t like to toilet where they sleep so if you are consistent and patient the dog will get the idea very quickly. Some pups can sleep through the night and others will let you know if you need to take them outside. Never leave extra food around for your pup. They will constantly graze food all day and then your control of their toilet habits will be inconsistent. It is important that all meals are given in the crate and then the dog learns a consistent and repetitive toilet habit. Always take your puppy to the same place so that their smell is consistent in the toilet area. Important If your puppy is pooing a lot look at their diet. Their stools should be firm and they should not be pooing excessively throughout the day. Being aware of any changes in their toilet habits is always a great indicator of their general health & wellbeing.

Puppies will usually want to eliminate (poo or wee) after eating, sleeping and after play. If you notice your puppy circling or sniffing around immediately take them to the toilet area. If you catch them eliminating in the wrong spot instantly distract them with a loud clap this will usually stop the process then take them to the toilet area. If your puppy does make a mistake clean the area with hot water then spray with white vinegar or citronella oil. Never use any disinfectant type cleaner as the ammonia base in these products often encourages the puppy back to that area and willnot mask the smell. Praise your puppy for toileting even when you are out and about. DO NOT EVER rub your puppies nose in their wee or poo, this will not help in toilet training and is a very offensive thing to do to any animal. Don’t make the toilet area too far away for younger pups. They may not be able to walk to the far corner of the yard. You can encourage them to go further away as they mature by putting their poo in a sealed container with small holes in the top. They will identify the container as the place to toilet and you can gradually move the container further away. If you do not want to crate your puppy then you still need to control them during feeding and afterwards. This applies to puppies that are kept inside and outside. Also remember that dogs that continuously use the house as a toilet are generally inside TOO MUCH. Put your puppy outside as much as possible and you will have far less problems with toilet training.

Wok this way – Bringing Asian fusion to Cairns, Wawawa’s Chef & Owner Hiro Sodeyama, stirs up the food scene on Lake Street. Discover culinary sophistication of fusion flavours that will captivate your palate. Hiro is a craftsman in the kitchen as he blends cultural diversity in traditional Asian dishes with modern flavours and the freshest ingredients.

How long have you been in Cairns, and what do you like about it? I first came to Cairns in 2002; it feels like my hometown in Australia. What does “Wawawa” mean? Wa-wa-wa is actually 3 different characters in Japanese. In English it sounds the same, but each character has different meaning: 1. Harmony 2. Conversation 3. Flow, circling like the universe What made you decide to open your own restaurant? Since I was young, I had a passion for food and being a Chef. My mother always cooked homemade food when I was growing up, never frozen. Everything was made from scratch. But it was always one of my dreams to own my own restaurant. Having spent years travelling Asia and Australia, I wanted to convey my experiences to the dishes I cook.

What is your vision for Wawawa? Fresh, Healthy, Authentic & Homemade No MSG All sauces are made in-house (Hint: If you’re a sauce lover, be sure to ask for some of Hiro’s specialty house-made sauces on the side. The punchy flavours will delight your tastebuds.)

What do you love about being a Chef and owning your own restaurant? Working with my lovely staff. Meeting and getting to know our modern, stylish and friendly customers. Every day is different. Owning a restaurant is a constant learning process.

What is your signature dish, and what makes it special? Thai Seafood Salad – prawn, squid, coriander and ginger, with chilli lime dressing. I make it with all fresh ingredients and it’s packed with natural bold flavours.

Sake Bomb! Hiro’s tips for drinking Sake: People think that drinking Sake leads to hangovers, but that is a misconception. That only happens if you do too many Sake Bombs, skulling Sake as shots. Just because it’s served in a shot glass, doesn’t mean you have to skull it. Sake Bombs are fun, but you might feel them in the morning. We serve only Premium Sake, which should be sipped and enjoyed, like wine. Take the time to enjoy the taste and aroma of Premium Sakes when you sip it slowly. Don’t skull it, enjoy it!

Most popular dishes on the menu? Szechuan Chicken – spicy wok fried chicken breast and vegetables. Nasi Goreng – Indonesian fried rice with soft egg. Tsukune – Baked chicken and pork patty with Asian spices. o We have Lunch Specials and our Lunch menu is different. It’s quite busy at lunch, but we offer Take Away too.

of activity for many years. This will in turn reflect in pricing as new land stock comes on the market. Rises is development costs including ongoing environmental requirements, physical site works, government fees and charges, and of course consumer demand will all combine to drive land prices up. The commercial sector has had some good news on development projects starting soon and this will flow on to the residential market and Cairns has one of the fastest growing populations (percentage wise) in Australia. All these people will need somewhere to live and this will add more pressure on availability of good land for development and extend the waiting lists longer. If you are looking for land we can help as we have strong relationships with local developers for upcoming land releases so move sooner rather than later. We currently have well priced House

Up untill recently Cairns has had an oversupply of land and the price of land has been very affordable. With the recent increase in building activity land has been selling and we are now coming to an undersupply in some areas of good, easy to build on land. I’ve been dealing with many developers in our area recently and they are now very low on land stock that is titled and ready to go. One subdivision on the south side released 30 blocks just before Christmas and have sold 50% already. Other subdivisions, especially on the north side, have price increases of over 25% in the last 18 months. Subsequently, much of the old stock has sold and developers are now working on the future land releases. Some developers have a waiting list and are taking holding deposits on land that won’t be available for 3 months. We haven’t seen that kind

Mechanically minded individuals intuitively see how things work. Good with tools and machinery, they’re adept at fixing things and are often able to take unfamiliar objects apart and put them back together so they work as well as or even better than before. Being mechanically minded doesn’t just apply to vehicle mechanics. This also describes people who think non-linearly, “outside the box” and can identify missing pieces and work backwards to find solutions, such as Surgeons and Computer Technicians. Patient, observant and visionary in nature, these professionals see the whole picture and have a knack for fixing, building, designing and creating.

Dan and Dennis lead McLeod Engineering’s current team of 5 qualified Diesel Fitters – who all boast many years of experience, 2 apprentices and 2 adm inistration staff. Bill also sometimes lends his knowledge and experience as a consultant when required.

Dan McLeod

Dennis Bissett

Dan is a qualified Diesel Fitter with a vast range of experience and troubleshooting abilities. In 1993, he started his apprenticeship at McLeod Engineering, working in a number of positions in the marine industry both locally and internationally before returning to McLeod Engineering in 2008. What drew you to this field? Family business, my parents Bill & Julie McLeod founded it in 1976. And I’ve always been interested in boats. Some people are into cars…I’m into boats. What do you love about your profession? Not one job is the same. Constant challenges, job satisfaction, and test-running boats. Favourite projects you’ve worked on? A favourite job was repowering the Dive boat Seastar with a pair of Scania DI 12’s and Twin Disc MGX 5114A transmissions. It was completed about 2½ years ago; that went without a hitch and is still going, running successfully back and forth to the reef every day. How does McLeod Engineering stand out from competition? We have a highly experienced team of Diesel fitters, that between them, have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge, in a wide range of marine diesel engines, transmissions and drives. What is the future outlook for the business? Bringing our business into the ever changing and expanding market place. Delivering to our customers needs, to ensure the future of their businesses and ours.

Dennis Bissett started in a spare parts role with McLeod Engineering in 2003. He had previously spent 17 years at MTU Detroit Diesel in spare parts, and provides a wealth of knowledge for customers. What drew you to this field? I have been involved in the industry since I left school in 1975, and always liked boats. I had a vague idea of getting involved in the fishing industry “up north” when I got out of the navy. What do you love about your profession? Customers’ reaction at the end of a good job. Career Highlight: Purchasing the business during the GFC, and managing to keep ahead and grow. Commitment to customers: We strive with any job, to do it well and only have to do it once. Any exciting projects ahead? There is always one just around the corner.

by Stacy Wong “I’m a third generation mechanic, so I guess it was always going to be a given; that and as a child I always loved pulling things apart – only these days I know how to put them back together,” says Kevin. Kevin knows his niche, preferring to diversify within his specialty market to cater for all sorts of brake systems across the automotive and mechanical industries. “Many companies in the automotive industry these days seem to be diversifying by going outside of their niche market, trying to make a quick buck. By doing that, they are losing sight of what they were doing or doing well. It’s particularly hard to concentrate on a service and/ or products if you are constantly trying to branch out into something else.” says Kevin.

“Knights Brakes has been around for over 40 years, and we’ve always stuck with what we do best, and in turn keep the prices down by doing

What do you love about your profession? Being specialists in our field, we get to work with all different industries. Although we are mainly automotive we also work on a range from caravans to large ships, Navy Vessels and all types of industrial equipment. We get to see vast array of equipment, which I suppose is exciting for some (laughs Kevin).

Our son, Kaileb, started full-time with us this year after hanging around the place most of his life as a child and tinkering with different projects. I feel he’ll fit in pretty quickly and bring on his enthusiasm. When we have crew that have been here with us long-term, some for longer than even myself, it makes us think we’re doing something right.

Any favourite projects you’ve worked on? We have worked on some of the best show cars in the country, and also some weird and wonderful monstrosities that customers have built. I recall a 3-wheel all wheel drive semi monster truck built on a Hilux chassis which was cabin less and you sat on it like a motorbike the customer was going to try and register it, I think he’s still trying! I also like modifying and manufacturing products which either rectify particular problem specific vehicles have or enhance their performance.

We all get on well as a team to either make work practices quicker, easier or more productive. This keeps prices low for our customers, which is not often the public’s mentality. Everyone presumes we would be more expensive as specialists, but it’s quite the opposite as we can cut costs stocking quality brand products by procuring direct from the manufacturer. With increased productivity and decades of experience, our customers are better in the pocket.

What’s ahead for Knights Brakes? The future for Knights is looking good and a little exciting. My wife Renee and I have had the company for about 15 years, and usually by then you see businesses starting to get a little stagnate. However we are full steam ahead.

it effectively.” “We have the largest stock and range of brake products in North Queensland. Being premium distributors of most of the major brands, we can also better the prices of all the major franchise chains, and keep the money local.”

Our customers know they can count on us for prompt, reliable service and superior products. At Airfirst, you will find our highly trained and experienced staff are willing to do just that. Our business has earned a reputation for doing the job right, the first time.”

What are some common problems home/ business owners face? • Vermin (frogs, geckos and snakes) getting into the units during the off-season. This is where regular checks/servicing are warranted and will save $$ in replacement parts. • Old units – The cost of running some of the older units are quite staggering. Today’s unit manufacturers have to meet MEPS and Energy Standards, which means cost saving at the meter. • Who to call – Stick to the more known and reputable companies that can offer warranty and service backup. • Warranty issues – Have your product installed by an accredited installer. • Rust – We live in the FNQ. It’s part of life here, but regular checks and maintenance can prolong the life of your product. Graeme’s Cool Tips & Advice: • Get in early – Summer comes around quickly and we all seem to leave it to the last minute. Trust me, Christmas lunch without air-con is not good. • Isolate – If you’re not using the AC over winter, turn it off at the isolator. This will lower the risk of damage from vermin and power surges in storms.

What can home/business owners do to optimise efficiency of air conditioners/refrigeration appliances? • While most will set the AC to freezing, raising the set point slightly higher will reduce running costs and unit wear greatly. • Regular maintenance is definitely a must. Filters need to be checked & cleaned 2-3 times a year, sometimes more depending on use. • Ensure the outside unit is clear of obstructions (leaves, cardboard, boxes, toys, etc.) that could reduce/restrict airflow. Most units are designed to operate in 35-degree ambient temperatures, so every degree over is going to affect the unit capacity and its ability to cool inside. • Engage a Respected and Qualified company to service/check the unit’s general operation and condition. Check your Product Warranty to find out what’s covered.
