Let’s Talk AI

The emergence of AI in my opinion is both cool, but equally scary in the sense that we don’t want to generate a dumb population that relies on AI instead of unique human thought – especially in our schools and universities.

I am sure many of you have had a play with AI of late or at least heard about it. ChatGPT seems to be the most popular one on everyone’s lips. I actually think it’s a phenomenal piece of software. But it is also very generic at this stage and really only best used for a 1st draft for a human to then tinker with and make it their own. Beige content is boring I mean let’s be honest, no-one wants to blend in, but rather stand out.

Google is already all over it. So if people think they can short cut the system by auto generating blogs for their websites for SEO purposes, or take over the role of an author or a qualified journalist that imbeds quotes from other humans through interviews and investigative reporting, accessing leaked documents not available on the web etc, then I think people are sadly mistaken. Google is already identifying and penalising sites using autogenerated content through AI. And software developers are working at speed to unleash AI detection software to out run it. There are platforms available that are being used as we speak to detect people using it online. So I think people need to utilise it with caution at this point in time.

Do I think ChatGPT will replace human authors and investigative journalists in the next 10 years? No I don’t. I have no doubt AI will advance and make inroads on this front and speed up the way we do things in a content hungry world. But I await the day that a software replaces a human completely in that sense. I absolutely LOVE what AI can do, don’t get me wrong. The advancement in technology excites me for its potential. But I’m not convinced it’s anywhere near replacing humans just yet.

I long for the day that like in the cartoon I watched as a kid – “The Jetsons” – that AI advances to a point that it can do my hair and makeup and style me each morning before leaving the house. Or cook me dinner before I’m home from work. Now that’s an AI that will truly improve my life!! ;)
