e welcome you to Hong Kong and to CityLife , the monthly magazine for visitors to Asia’s world city.

The month of June heralds the onset of summer in Hong Kong and we can expect not just warm temperatures, but sunny skies and clear air from the south as well. That means hitting the outdoors and enjoying the beaches and waters around Hong Kong. And what better way to get maritime than to join the locals celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival, a 2000-year-old Chinese holiday, steeped in tradition and still as popular as ever. Choose from more than 10 major dragon boat meets at various venues over 9 to 12 June, mostly at well-known tourist destinations.

The largest dragon boat event is the CCB (Asia) Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races, part of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival, which this year takes place along the Central Harbourfront. Arguably the biggest dragon boat competition of its kind in the world, hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected. The accompanying San Miguel BeerFest, where fans and athletes alike enjoy ice cold beers and pumping rock music, makes this easily the biggest summer party in the city.

So if you are visiting during this period, be sure to get along to one of these events and fill a day with fun and sightseeing (Please see our cover story on page 12).

For ballet lovers, the Hong Kong Ballet is winding up its 2015/2016 season with a performance called “Serenade and More”, a diverse programme featuring four ballets by a trio of choreographers – including George Balanchine’s seminal work Serenade, Chinese choreographer Fei Bo’s Over There and Shenren Chang (“Harmony between Gods and Men”), as well as Sacred Thread by Edwaard Liang, Artistic Director of BalletMet. For something to get your feet moving, make a beeline for the 9th Hong Kong DanceSport Festival WDSF GrandSlam Hong Kong 2016. Top athletes in Latin and Standard Dance will compete in Hong Kong in the third leg of a five-leg world tournament, with the final taking place in Shanghai later this year.

Line dancing and ballroom dancing are both popular in Hong Kong, so join the crowd and tap along if dancing is your gig.

If you’re looking to get to grips with what makes Hong Kong tick, then why not take in the variety of our museums and explore Hong Kong’s history, culture and people in all their fullness through the eyes of expert curators? BBC Frozen Planet in Concert

Hong Kong Sinfonietta is collaborating with Actors’ Family once again to bring local musical “The Passage Beyond” into the concert hall. Music Director Yip Wing-sie will conduct the orchestra performing music

by Leon Ko and a libretto by Chris Shum.

The Passage Beyond was awarded Best Performance, Best Original Score, Most Touching Drama of the Year, and Best Original Song in the 19th, 20th and 21st Hong Kong Drama Awards.

"Fragile Beauty" by City Contemporary Dance Company

Le French May 2016: Beauty and the Beast

Thierry Malandain’s Beauty and the Beast is a neoclassical ballet with a distinctly intellectual interpretation. Based on Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film adaption, Malandain tells a rite-of-passage story aimed at resolving the duality of humanity. Elegant and fluent, Tchaikovsky’s music and performance of the Malandain Ballet Biarritz work together to bring to life a heartwarming fairy tale, where dreams come true and love’s transformative powers are celebrated.

tmtplaza Goes French in Anticipation of the UEFA European Championship

The UEFA European Championship kicks off on 10 June with 24 top European teams competing for the trophy in the finals in France. tmtplaza is joining in the football celebrations taking us to Paris right here in Hong Kong.

Well-known paper sculptor Joe Wong is invited by tmtplaza to create the world’s tallest paper Eiffel Tower, with other French and football-themed paper works on view; there are also other European folk cultural delights to enjoy, from Morris Dancing to living sculptures, and much more.

Martial Arts Dance Drama Storm

24-26 Clouds JUN Based on the much-loved martial arts comics series Fung Wan (Wind and Cloud) by renowned Hong Kong comic book artist Ma Wing-shing, Hong Kong Dance Company’s drama entitled ‘Storm Clouds’ lifts these memorable characters from the page and brings them and their fantastical, imaginative world to life on stage.

King of Wrestling 2016

"King of Wrestling 2016" is returning to Youth Square this year. In the first-ever women’s wrestling contest in Hong Kong, Hiroyo Matsumoto, multi-time Japan female wrestling champion, will debut here against Singapore stunner Alexis Lee. The most popular masked wrestler in the Northern Japan, Kenbai, returns by popular acclaim to demonstrate his brilliant high flying manoeuvres. Current AWGC Junior Heavyweight Champion Jason Lee will defend his belt against a member of "Outer Space" faction.

The 9th Hong Kong DanceSport Festival WDSF GrandSlam Hong Kong 2016

The 9th Hong Kong DanceSport Festival WDSF GrandSlam Hong Kong 2016, organized by Hong Kong DanceSport Association, will be held at MacPherson Stadium. WDSF GrandSlam offers world-class performances as top athletes in Latin and Standard Dance compete in this third leg of the five-leg tour. The first stop was Helsinki (Finland).

Other legs are in Wuhan (China), Stuttgart (Germany) and Moscow (Russia), with athletes competing in four regular legs to qualify for the Finals in Shanghai (China).

7th Chinese Opera

17 Jun Festival 14 Aug Featuring

a variety of rich and colourful programmes, the 7th Chinese Opera Festival presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will showcase seven Chinese operatic genres. Highlights will include Kunqu opera performances in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the death of Tang Xianzu, as well as the Monkey King Play Series to celebrate the Year of the Monkey.

here is a surprising amount of countryside in Hong Kong, particularly the glorious scenery and open spaces of the northeastern New Territories and its outlying islands. A little over two hours from downtown, there’s nowhere better to lose the crowds than the remote island of Tap Mun. Just getting there is half the pleasure.

Take the MTR to Diamond Hill station where you can catch a bus. From the top deck, leave the urban sprawl behind, and enjoy views of Hong Kong’s countryside.

You will see many old villages set amid fields, although practically no rice is grown here any more. Before long, you’re in the bustling fishing port of Sai Kung. The town has flourished in recent years as property is cheaper than close to the urban areas, attracting many young families. Shops and restaurants have sprung up to give the area quite a buzz. However, exploring can wait until later in the day. Grab a quick coffee

before travelling on through the leafy Country Park to Wong Shek pier at the end of the peninsula, where the little local ferry awaits.

The kaido chugs slowly out over a deep turquoise sea rimmed by jade green hills before arriving at Tap Mun. The tiny island is home to under 100, mostly elderly, Hakka people and Tanka fisherfolk, the population down from several thousand a few decades ago. Here time definitely stands still and walking round the quiet paths you get some idea of what life used to be like for Hongkongers before the modern age arrived.

in many seafaring communities, Hakka people moved here to run village shops supplying the fisherfolk with provisions.

Next to their sturdy stone houses is the centuries-old Tin Hau temple, dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea. Being the last point of shelter, fishermen prayed here before heading out to open water. The temple was renovated for the Ta Tsiu celebrations in April 2009. This important Taoist ceremony lasts several days and takes place every ten years. Priests hold rituals to placate the ghosts and banish malevolent spirits. Opera performances are held, pai lau, flower arches, line the path and the island is full of families returning from around the world.

Beyond the temple, the path leads up past the police station and a panoramic view unfolds over grassy hilltops and pebble beaches below. Watch the egrets and other water birds in the small mangrove-rimmed cove and enjoy spectacular views of distant mainland China.

The Tanka fishing people live to the right of the ferry pier in homes built over water.

Though settled on land, they retain many customs from when they lived their whole lives afloat. They seldom go far to fish now, but out in the bay are a number of fish farms.

Some make a living by selling their sun-dried catch to local tourists. Above the homes is a pretty pink and white church, built by New Zealand missionaries in the 1960s.

A path leads past the village around armchair graves nestled in the hillside looking out to sea; the area has perfect Fung Shui for the ancestors to enjoy. The well-marked trail drops down toward the Balanced Rock. Two huge rocks on top of each other resemble a pagoda, or tap, in Chinese. Mun, door, refers to the large cave said to link to the altar of the Tin Hau temple, where the sound of waves warns of impending storms. The two words give the island its name.

Back in Sai Kung, stop over for some fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants down by the harbour. Choose your fish live from the tanks outside – but check the prices before you decide – and they will be cooked to perfection. A truly satisfying end to the day. ■

he summer begins with the celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival, otherwise known as Tuen Ng Festival, a 2000-year-old tradition that has passed down through the ages. In true Hong Kong fashion, the event is a big party occasion at venues all across the city. Catch dragon fever as you watch the racing action and celebrate with the locals.

夏日伊始，端午節的到來為本月揭開帷幕。端午節擁有兩千年歷史，如今香港將 它變成遍布全港的盛大派對。不妨投入龍舟熱潮，觀看精彩賽事，以香港獨有 的方式慶祝端午節。

THE LEGEND 端午節傳說

The most popular account of the legend surrounding the Tuen Ng Festival goes back to the Warring Kingdoms period when a popular minister and poet named Qu Yuan in the Kingdom of Chu (thought to have lived 340278 BC) was banished from the court after the king heeded the counsel of corrupt officials who conspired against him. Qu Yuan, seeing his beloved kingdom collapsing before his eyes, drowned himself in the river in despair. The villagers raced in boats to try and find his body, beating on drums and splashing the water with their paddles to ward off evil spirits and scare away the fish; they even threw rice dumplings into the water to distract the fish from eating his body. The tradition was maintained and thus was born the Tuen Ng Festival, now celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Lunar Calendar. 關於端午節有一個流傳甚廣的傳說，戰國時期楚國著名政治家及詩人屈原（公 元前340年－公元前278年）因奸臣進讒而被流放，最後因不忍看到自己深愛 的祖國一步步走向滅亡而投江自盡，百姓聞訊馬上划船撈救，並敲鼓和以船槳 拍打水面，希望驅逐鬼神和嚇走江中的魚，為了不讓屈原的屍體被魚蝦吃掉， 他們還將飯糰投入江中驅趕魚蝦，後來就有了農曆五月五日端午節划龍舟、吃 粽子的習俗。

The Festival 端午節簡介

The festival is celebrated by the holding of fiercely contested dragon boat races and eating rice dumplings stuffed with meat or beans. In Hong Kong, the city really celebrates in style, hosting arguably the largest dragon boat races in the world, and offering a rich variety of rice dumplings as gifts to share. 端午節有龍舟競渡及吃以肉類和豆類為餡料的粽子的習俗，香港則以 其獨有的方式慶祝這個節日。香港的龍舟競渡可能是世界上最大型的 龍舟比賽，人們還會互相贈送各式各樣的粽子。

As a city of many islands, with ready access to the water, Hong Kong holds more than 10 dragon boat regattas of varying sizes, with most of them taking place on 9 June, the day of the festival. The biggest event, the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival is a three-day meet from 10 to 12 June. 香港有眾多小島，整個城市大部分都被水包圍，這裡將舉行超過 10場不同規模的龍舟賽事，其中大部分將於6月9日端午節當天舉 行，最大型的盛事香港龍舟嘉年華將於6月10日至12日舉行。

CCB (Asia) Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races Hundreds of thousands will gather at the Central Harbourfront to soak up the festive atmosphere of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival. The main attraction is the CCB (Asia) Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races – three days of intense racing that fill the harbour with heartstopping action, a profusion of colour, and the sounds of drummers and fans urging paddlers on to the finish line. It’s the perfect day to spend at the beach and end with a visit to Stanley Market and its quaint promenade lined with al fresco restaurants and bars.

Taking place at the promenade of Tai Po Waterfront Park, which is a large multi-purpose destination. Visitors can rent bicycles in the park and ride along the Tolo Harbour Cycle Track towards Shatin, or to the dam at Tai Mei Tuk. 賽事將於大埔海濱公園堤畔舉 行，市民經常在此進行不同活 動。遊客可在公園內租借單車， 沿著吐露港單車徑來一場清風送 爽的單車之旅！

Located close to the heart of Shatin, in the New Territories, this striking three-storey building, in classical Chinese architectural style, provides 7500 square metres of space featuring 12 themed galleries, of which six are permanent. Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence 香港海防博物館

This sprawling, semi-outdoor museum, located at the former Lei Yu Mun Fort at the eastern entrance of Hong Kong harbour, provides a fascinating look at the 600-year history of Hong Kong’s defence from the Ming Dynasty up to the present day.

Just out of the hustle and bustle of Central District, this museum commemorates the life of Dr Sun Yatsen, considered the Father of Modern China and one of the most influential figures in all Chinese history.

Dr Sun Yat-sen received his secondary and university schooling in Hong Kong and his time here had a profound influence on his revolutionary ideas. You may be surprised by the important part that rail transport played in Hong Kong’s development, with the famous Hong Kong-Canton Railway providing the primary link to Mainland China for many decades from 1910. isitors may be surprised to learn that Hong Kong has the largest French expatriate community in Asia – more than 25,000 by some accounts.

It’s not surprising that quality French restaurants abound with many carrying reputations that reach well beyond Hong Kong's shores. Amber, the twostarred Michelin restaurant located at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental is right there at the top of the list.

Under the direction of Chef Richard Ekkebus, a Dutchman who trained under a number of noted French chefs, Amber offers traditional French cooking with fresh and unique ingredients from around the region, taking advantage of Hong Kong’s unique status as a transport hub and global city. The restaurant’s décor exudes elegance and its generous seating provides ample privacy. Coupled with its impeccable and attentive service, we eagerly anticipated a memorable meal to be lovingly savoured.

For our lunch, we ordered Amber’s famous degustation menu (only available for a whole table) plus a few selections from its regular lunch menu to give us a fuller complement of its delightful creations.

We started with a trio of Amuse Bouches (bitesized hors d’oeuvres): Crispy Filo Tartelette with Gruyere and Green Grape, Buckwheat Toast with Fennel, Avocado and Wild Flowers and HK-Style Buckwheat Waffle with Bell Pepper and Tomato Compote, all deliciously appetite-inducing. These were followed by a parade of starter dishes including Wild Yellow Tail, served raw and tender over stracciatella, with pickled radish and shaved green

strawberries and wild fennel; Jerome Galis Green Asparagus; and the signature Hokkaido Sea Urchin in lobster jelly with cauliflower topped with caviar and crispy waffles – the latter dish was highly anticipated and didn’t disappoint; we just wished there was more.

Next came the Miyazaki Wagyu Beef – lightly barbecued strip loin, garnished with dulse and red cabbage slaw oxalis, horseradish and pepper berry emulsion – an exotic taste combination that really sets off the exquisitely tender and subtly flavoured beef and lingers in the mouth.

A line-caught whiting steamed with white wine and caper leaves table side flatbean, leeks, sazae and cockle stew with pink grapefruit from the main course menu completed our sampling. The fish fillet was tender and bit firmly and the mildly flavoured sauce brought out the freshness of the fish.

We completed our meal with an excellent selection of French cheeses – the full range from soft to hard and mild to strongly flavoured, all of which we eagerly consumed, followed by a trio of desserts: Kacinkoa 85% Chocolate, a sorbet; Amber’s famous Hokkaido Corn Topped with Ice Cream over Chocolate Mouse and Condiments; and Opalys – white chocolate cream-with-lime custard infused with coffee ice cream.

A luxuriously presented meal needs to be consumed and enjoyed at one’s leisure – and we did just that. You should definitely treat yourself or your loved ones to a special meal that is possibly the best that Hong Kong can offer. ■

talian food has long been a Hong Kong favourite and, as such, the city offers a number of excellent Italian fine dining restaurants. Among them, Sabatini – located in the Royal Garden Hotel, a venerable name in Italian dining – ranks right up on the top echelon.

The distinctive coat-of-arms engraved on its plates after we were seated informed us that we would indeed be treated to a special meal for our lunch. The restaurant offers a great appetiser buffet lunch with choices of the main course plus a good selection of appetisers and desserts. We were there, however, to sample its special promotion of white asparagus which is in season in May and June this year (till 18 June) and these are special indeed. Flown in from the Black Forest region of Germany, the succulent white asparagus spears are much larger than normal and especially sweet.

We jumped right into the lunch and three courses of white asparagus are served: White Asparagus, 24 months-aged Parma Ham and Egg Yolk Sauce (HK$308), White Asparagus with Ratte Potatoes, Sautéed Onion and Hollandaise sauce (HK$288), and White Asparagus with Pan-seared Hokkaido Scallops, Poached Eggs and Black Truffle Sauce (HK$428).

Each of the three dishes expertly blends the asparagus’s lightly sweet and cleanly bland taste with more seasoned pairings, which in this case are the Parma Ham, sautéed potatoes, and the scallops. Conversely the pairings themselves bring out different though subtle tastes of the asparagus, so it is a real treat to experience the

different sensations from bite to bite. We especially liked the pairing with the scallops in Black Truffle Sauce, which is visually stunning and aromatically stimulating, not to mention the delicious taste – talk about satisfying all the senses!

We sampled three main courses, again all concurrently. The Linguini with Scampi, Clams and Mussels, A Sabatini Original (HK$428) is a favourite here, and we really like the understated tomato flavour which in turn accentuates the freshness of the seafood.

The Risotto with Porcini Mushrooms and Smoked Duck Liver (HK$428) is also excellent as the quality ingredients speaks for themselves. The risotto soaks up the broth, which in turn is subtly flavoured and not too creamy. The duck liver bites nicely and melts easily in the mouth.

The third main course dish was the beautifully presented Charcoal-grilled Lamb Chops with Thyme, Lemon and Oven-Baked Polenta (HK$528)which we devoured eagerly. The tender lamb chops were grilled just enough to retain the meat’s juiciness, and the polenta texture and the seasoning provide the perfect complement.

We were almost too full to sample the Italian desserts, but we couldn’t resist the gorgeouslooking Tiramisu, which tastes as good as it looks, along with the Mille-Feuille and Fruit Salad which both give the Tiramisu a good run for its money.

For a great Italian dinner in an elegant and comfortable setting, you can’t go wrong with Sabatini – we would certainly go back there, any time. ■

Traditional Chinese scholars were accomplished in painting, poetry, chess and qin. They would enrich their study rooms with a range of objects important to the pursuit of these activities, including writing utensils and accessories for tea and incense ceremonies. These objects embodied the highest degree of technical precision and finely honed aesthetic sensibilities. As such, they also embodied the wisdom, traditions and values of the Chinese literati that governed China for more than two millennia. Scholars also believed in the power of nature to inspire their creativity for music, painting or calligraphy, and thus displayed objects of natural stone or natural wood in their study.

These two unique natural root stands are of the rare hard woods zitan, and huanghuali. The stands were used to display various types of potted plants that are more commonly known in the west as bonsai following the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese characters 盆栽. Donald Cheung, Concierge Manager of Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui, shares with CityLife his thoughts on his role. 香港尖沙咀凱悅酒店禮賓部經理張建宏與我們分享他對酒店業的獨特見解及 個人經歷。 CityLife: What do you like most about your job?

Donald: Hyatt’s motto is “We care for people so they can be their best”. For me, that means being able to meet guests from different countries and help them with suggestions for their itineraries or useful information to make their visits to Hong Kong memorable. And that is the part I like best about my job.

CL: Any memorable requests from your guests that you can share?

Donald: A guest who used a wheelchair came to Hong Kong for the first time to get married. To make his travel more convenient we booked in advance a taxi that could accommodate wheelchair passengers and help him get in and out of the taxi. CL: Have you observed any changes in service requests from your guests?

D o n a l d : Ye s , f o r s u re . We u s e d t o o ff e r basic services to our guests and that would suffice. Today we need to have much deeper understanding of our guests’ needs and provide more thoughtful suggestions and arrangements.

For example, if a guest wants to take the MTR somewhere, we need to know his specific destination so we can help him with the right exit to use as well as offer relevant information to enrich his visit.

CL: What do you like to do in Hong Kong when you are off from work?

Donald: Get together with friends, play some music and just relax and relieve the pressures of the day. ■

A two day itinerary for his hotel guests: First day: Star Ferry to Central, then take the 15C bus to the Tram station to go up Victoria Peak. Take the Peak circle walk, first on Harlech Road to enjoy the views of the south side of the Island, then the road becomes Luard Road, which provides stunning, panoramic views of the harbour before ending back at the Peak Tower. After lunch take the MTR to Mongkok’s Ladies Street market and after a brief rest, ask the concierge to book a nice restaurant for dinner with a good view of Vitoria Harbour. Then cap it off with a visit to Lan Kwai Fong to enjoy Hong Kong’s vibrant night life, if you are still up for it.

Second Day: Take the MTR to Tung Chung on Lantau Island after breakfast.

Take the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car to visit Ngong Ping Village, the Big Buddha, and the Po Lin Monastery – be sure to try its famous vegetarian lunch. Then take Bus 21 to Tai O village and see some of the only houses in Hong Kong built over water, on stilts.

Octopus Card 八達通卡 Stored-value cards for travel on the MTR, buses, minibuses, trams, and ferries. Available at service counters at the Airport Express and MTR stations. Each card comes with a refundable HK$50 deposit which covers the card cost. Initial stored value cost per card varies: Child (HK$20), Adult (HK$100), and Elder (HK$20). Simply place the card on the Octopus pad and the fare is automatically deducted.

For over a century, trams on Hong Kong Island have been an inexpensive mode of transportation. You can ride the full length of the 15-kilometre track at $2.30 per adult, $1.20 per child and $1.10 for a senior. GENERAL MANAGER Rebecca Kwan, General Manager of Lan Kwai Fong Hotel @ Kau U Fong, shares her thoughts on Hong Kong’s hotel industry, her beloved boutique hotel, and managing people. 蘭桂坊酒店@九如坊總經理關淑華小姐與我們分享她對香港酒店業 的看法，介紹她最喜愛的精品酒店和她的管理理念。 I always wanted to see the world and so I joined a travel agency. Not realizing the difference between inbound and outbound markets I found myself working on the inbound market side organizing hotel reservations and tours. Then I became a tour escort for tour groups from America to visit China which was quite exciting. Then I got involved in sales and marketing - all of which allowed me to learn a lot.

In a natural progression I joined the hotel industry. Since then I’ve been fortunate to work on a number of historically known hotels in Hong Kong, an international hotel management company, in China, and now managing a unique boutique hotel of which I am very proud.

I love the hotel industry but you need to have real passion for your job to stay in it. While the hotel industry can seem glamorous to many young people, once on the job, it involves lots of tasks and details some of which can be repetitive. So the desire or passion to serve your guests helps a great deal with doing your job or overcoming a challenging day.

我十分熱衷於探索世界，因此最初我加入了一間旅行社，當時我並不太了解 入向行銷和出向行銷的區別，我發現自己做的都是酒店和旅行團預訂的工 作，之後我成為了一個美國旅行團在中國的導遊，這份工作很有趣。接著我 進入了銷售和市場營銷行業，令我受益匪淺。 很自然地，我進入了酒店業。那時我很幸運，曾在香港幾間老牌酒店以及中 國內地一間國際酒店管理公司工作，現在負責管理香港的一間精品酒店，我 感到十分驕傲。 我十分熱愛酒店業，我認為對工作要有真正的熱情，才能讓你堅持下去。對 很多年輕人來說，酒店業看起來光鮮亮麗，但真正進入這個行業後，就會發 現工作十分繁瑣，很多更是重複性的，因此必須有服務顧客的熱情，才能幫 助你克服困難。 我認為要成為一名出色的總經理，關鍵是讓每個人都充滿動力。要為員工創 造一個良好的工作環境，這樣才能讓他們充分發揮團隊精神，為同一目標而 努力。

A key part of being a good general manager is to keep everybody motivated by creating a good working environment so the staff can work as a team and have everybody buy in to the same goals and objectives.

我們酒店是香港首批精品酒店之一，自此之後這個市場不斷發展。十年前我 們酒店開業時，只有從美國或歐洲等遠道而來的客人比較熟悉精品酒店，亞 洲旅客並不太接受，他們比較看重酒店的星級和品牌。如今亞洲旅客對精品 酒店的接受程度高了，但我們的顧客依然大多來自歐美市場。

Our hotel was one of the first boutique hotels in Hong Kong and it’s been fascinating to see how this market segment has evolved since.

When the hotel opened 10 years ago, only guests from long haul markets in America and Europe were familiar with boutique hotel; it was not well accepted by most Asian travelers who still valued hotel ratings and hotel brands. Today there is more acceptance, but our guest mix still tends towards those from long haul markets.

酒店開業之初，上環區並不像現在般多姿多彩，當時這裡是一個菜市場，有 一些賣肉類的檔攤以及印刷店。現在的上環區已經變得十分時尚，畫廊、元 創方、新派餐廳和時尚服飾店相繼進駐，因此我們酒店的位置及定位均十分 理想。當然了，如今競爭激烈，我們必須繼續努力，才能在同類酒店中突圍 而出。例如最近我們和一位法國藝術家合作，為酒店裝潢注入了更多藝術元 素。

Similarly when we opened, this area of Shueng Wan was not that interesting: there was a wet market, some butchers, some printing shops- not exactly hip. Now, Sheung Wan has become quite hip, with art galleries, the PMQ nearby, trendy restaurants, and fashion shops. So our location and positioning is ideal, finally. But of course there are a lot more competition these days so we need to continually differentiate ourselves.

For example, we are working with a French artist to infuse a really cool artistic decor to the way our hotel looks.

Hong Kong needs to do more to maintain its position as a top tourist destination. Neighbouring countries are catching up both with travel industry support infrastructure and new attractions. We need new reasons for tourists to visit Hong Kong besides shopping and dining.

My favorite things about Hong Kong are its dynamism as an international metropolis and its beautiful skylines of skyscrapers, the harbour, and mountains, especially at night. To visitors, I recommend, besides enjoying the beautiful skyline, trying out Chinese food, notably dim sum which is the best in the world. Also be sure to visit the countryside as we have so many hiking trails and country parks. It only takes 30 minutes by ferry and you can be in a beautiful island such as Lamma Island to enjoy nature. ■
