is the magic number this issue as we celebrate three years of City Kids Magazine in 2017. Three is also the number of finalists we had in our search for a cover star. Thanks to all of you who sent in entries for the competition – we were blown away by the interest. It was incredibly difficult to choose a winner, but congratulations to Amelia for braving the very un-Spring like weather for our photo shoot. Special mention goes to Hugh and Dominik who helped make the day so fun.

INFORMATION OVERLOAD

BEVERLEY TURNER

What superpower would best equip a mum-to-be for the cataclysmic change that accompanies having a baby? The ability to function on zero sleep? Teleportation to get to Amanda’s Action Kids in the rain when you need to change a poonami nappy at the last minute? Or, superstrength, allowing you to hold a baby in one arm, whilst effortlessly loading a pram and a 4kg bag into the boot? Or, perhaps, it would be something much less obvious: knowing who to trust.

are supposed to be gaining in confidence, we often find ourselves all-at-sea, without a single, reliable rock to cling to.

You see, this modern age of internet-based-enlightenment places all the answers at our fingertips. But, there is absolutely no way of knowing who is right, who has our best interests at heart and who is free from their own prejudicial pre-conceptions.

It is partly this search for unbiased, bang up-to-date empowering advice that inspired me to write The Happy Birth Book with Pam Wild, a midwife of 25 years. For the last three years, we have run Chiswick’s most popular antenatal course, The Blooming Bunch, and have been frustrated by the lack of a reliable, non-political, non-ideological birth handbook to recommend to the hundreds of couples who come through our door. We spotted a gap in the market for a go-to book, one that not only teaches biology, but also equips couples on how to get the most out of both the NHS and privately. We have spent the last year compiling our own, easily accessible, A-Z for navigating pregnancy, birth and the early weeks.

Don’t be fooled into thinking a white coat and a name badge denotes expertise. They signify hours of learning, which can be useful and, occasionally, life-saving. But, they don’t guarantee of a good bedside manner, compassion, time to answer your questions or demonstrate knowledge of the latest evidence regarding bestpractice. Don’t assume your medical support is wrong – but do be prepared to quiz them.

...this modern age of internet-based-enlightenment places all the answers at our fingertips. But,there is absolutely no way of knowing who is right ...

In the good old days, the garden fence was Google – you’d approach it with a basket of washing under your arm and ask for advice over it. Advice on breastfeeding or when it would be safe to have sex again. The immediate female tribe was the source of all knowledge: neighbours, aunts, sisters and a known-midwife formed a reliable search engine. Fake reviews of cots on Amazon couldn’t promise to solve your sleep dilemmas, and you weren’t reliant on faceless strangers to answer your 2 a.m. dilemma about cracked nipples. The internet can be a wonderful resource, but only if you know where to look. The anonymity of forums is both liberating and dangerous: there is no way of knowing a contributor’s own story. When it comes to pregnancy, birth and motherhood, nobody is a clean, objective slate. Every individual brings their own issues to the party. Pre-smartphones, women knew not to ask their neighbour about formula if she had breast-fed her twins for three years. They wouldn’t seek suggestions for contraception from the catholic, mother-of-eight down the road, and they knew not to query the impact of germs with the mum at the school gates, who let her kids drink out of the dog bowl. Ask an online forum about homebirth or caesarean, then step back as a major can-of-worms opens up on your screen, swimming with passionately held beliefs about what’s right and wrong. It’s no wonder we don’t know where to turn. In the real world, rather than the virtual one, the same issues apply. Latest research revealed that nine out of ten women give birth with a midwife that they had never met, not antenatal nor – worse still – postnatally. Subsequently, they’re at the receiving end of a myriad conflicting opinions on the pros and cons of everything: from feeding to sleeping and immunisations to slings. When we

Of course, what we’d rather give everyone is a known-midwife. This has been proven, time and again, to reduce perinatal mortality, improve successful breastfeeding and reduce medical intervention. The evidence is so convincing that, if it were a pill, there would be an outcry if it wasn’t readily available. But, despite efforts to make this a reality, it remains a pipe-dream for most women using the NHS. Even Independent Midwives – for decades, the only option for women prepared to pay for a known-midwife – are, yet again, threatened with extinction due to groundless conclusions about their indemnity insurance cover. These women were already superheroes, and yet they will need to summon all the strength of The Hulk if they are to work freely again. Until that happens, and until the NHS starts prioritising one-to-one care, I’ll be so bold as to suggest you buy our book. Giving birth, whether it’s for the first, second (or more!) time, is meant to be safe and joyous. So, switch off the screen, turn down the voices and curl up on the sofa with a book you can trust. Beverley Turner is on LBC Radio 6pm every Saturday. The Happy Birth Book is out in April. CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 11

INFLUENCERS Kelly Reeves Photography

OUR KIDS ARE INFLUENCED IN MYRIAD WAYS AS THEY NAVIGATE THEIR WAY THROUGH CHILDHOOD. SOPHIE CLOWES LOOKS AT THE POSITIVES OF REAL-LIFE CONNECTIONS.

A

s the real world gets ever more crazy, as politics and politicians break all the rules, as carefully curated Instagram feeds attack our families’ fragile sense of selfworth, as nature throws us earthquakes and erupting volcanoes, as SATs and 11+, GCSEs and A Levels take on an importance disproportionate to their worth, the need to seek solace from this exhausting, mostly man-made madness increases. Guiding our children through this fog is not a job for the fainthearted. Nor is it a job to be tackled alone. There are many influencers in our children’s lives, starting with us as parents. As our children grow, the field of influence widens. Siblings, other family members, teachers and peers all inform their decisions. These are real-life interactions, and many people within these groups are positive role models.

Online media, particularly social media, holds sway over our emotionally vulnerable pre-teen and teen offspring. To get a handle on the enormity of this, take 25-year-old YouTube vlogger Joe Sugg (younger brother of the even more successful Zoe, aka Zoella), who has over ten million registered viewers. His videos have had more than a billion views. That’s quite some influence. To put it into oldschool perspective, the daily circulation figures of all the British broadsheet newspapers combined are far lower at just over 1.5 million. Or, how about Selena Gomez with her 107 million Instagram followers, or the not-sure-how-much-of-her-is-real selfie queen Kim Kardashian with 90.6 million followers? One of the greatest triumphs of social media has been its means of giving everyone a voice. It has given increased empowerment to the women of the world in particular, and has helped launch businesses and careers alike, for which, three massive cheers. It is, however, all too often a one-way relationship (Gomez follows a mere 254 on Instagram, Kardashian an even more paltry 104), a super-edited falsity that encourages our children to judge their inside on others’ outside.

An influencer can light a fire in a child’s belly, one that tells them to reach beyond the confines of (dis)ability, wealth, nationality, race, gender and any other restrictions that hold our children back.

However, the trouble with families, as the adage goes, is that you can’t pick them. The negative role we are cast in when very young can stay with us for life: the difficult one, the whining one, the greedy one, the bossy one, the lazy one … while often coming from a place of deep love, these epithets can become self-fulfilling and, subsequently, toxic. Well-meaning family members and friends can enforce negative pre-conceptions and display limited patience or creativity (hands up, anyone?) as influencers.

Similarly, as parents, we take great care in choosing a school to fit the character of our child. However we have no choice in our child’s classmates or teachers. It is left to chance as to whether there will be a conflict or confluence of interests. Many is the primary school child who is lost in the middle of the class, seemingly invisible to the teacher, pin-balling between sets of friends, unable to find their tribe. 12 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Carol Dweck, a psychology professor at Stanford University, and one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation, talks of the importance of encouraging a growth mindset in children, as opposed to a fixed mindset where the child sees ability as something that is pre-set. So, who should we turn to for help in nurturing this growth mindset? At the end of last year, I went to the funeral of someone we had known only briefly, but whose impact on our family’s life

FEATURE had been immense. Brian Appiah Obeng taught freerunning with the Foucan Freerunning Academy in Hammersmith. He was a reallife super hero. Tragically, in a cruel and unpredictable plot twist, he died unexpectedly from an asthma attack. He was a mammoth of a man in spirit, soul and stature, and he turned my child into someone who could move with freedom and ease. What I didn’t realise when I signed my son up was how much else he’d learn: how to have fun, gain confidence, see opportunity in everything, better learn how to make friends and have a laugh, all the while getting fitter and stronger in the company of someone with extraordinary patience and kindness. As I walked home from the Tube, after his funeral, I realised that, sitting beside my sadness over his passing, there lay a small seed of optimism. It felt as though he had left his boundless zeal for life in the care of his friends and colleagues. I then looked at the other out-of-school activities my primary school-aged children and their friends were doing, and realised it was as much about the influence of the person leading the activity as the activity itself: inspirational people who are experts in their fields. They all have an extraordinary rapport with the kids, offering encouragement, regardless of ability and circumstance. In short, they gave so much more than itemised on the receipt. Real-life influencers create a place where, for our child, the world is as it should be – where all the things they perceive as marking them negatively different melt into nothingness. It is a place

where they are allowed, and encouraged, to be the best version of themselves. Where meeting their potential is purposeful. An influencer is someone who has your child’s back. It is someone who can encourage your child to flourish beyond the restrictions of school or home. An influencer can light a fire in a child’s belly, one that tells them to reach beyond the confines of (dis)ability, wealth, nationality, race, gender and any other restrictions that hold our children back. Influencers are always radiators, they never drain. Brian was a man of many talents: photographer, actor, writer and freerunner. He posted his work on a site called Broken Jumps. A broken jump is a freerunning term for “an act that you’ve succeeded at that you’d never done before and likely was something that scared you before you did it”. This is what a good influencer will help your child achieve. Such richly influential people are all around us. When discussing the wealth of activities on our doorstep with an out-of-towner, I was blithely told that such classes do, in fact, exist in the provinces. Maybe, but not as many within walking distance, and not necessarily with a diverse group of participants taught by some of the best in their field. This is where living in London is such a privilege. Next time you are wondering what activity you should sign your child up for, whether it’s to buy you more time at work or to encourage some independence, consider what else they are going to learn. Choose wisely and go and break some jumps.

1.

Pour the milk into a blender. Add the fruit, vanilla extract and ice cubes and whizz for 30–45 seconds until smooth. Add honey or maple syrup to taste, if you like.

2.

Strain into glasses to remove any pips or chunks of ice and serve.

FOOD BY JO PRATT

SAVOURY MUFFINS MAKES 12 muffins PREPARATION TIME 15 minutes COOKING TIME 20 minutes

1.

Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper muffin cases. Alternatively, lightly grease the holes of the muffin tin, then press a 13cm/5in square of baking paper into each hole, shaping the squares to fit by folding the sides.

2.

Put the pine nuts in a dry, non-stick pan over a medium heat for a few minutes, shaking and tossing the pan continuously until they start to turn golden. (Don’t leave them in the pan or they will quickly burn.)

3.

Tip them out onto a plate to cool.

4.

Mix together the flour, baking powder and polenta in a mixing bowl.

5.

In a separate bowl, lightly mix together two-thirds of the cheese and all the remaining ingredients. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix quickly and lightly to form a lumpy batter. (Over- mixing will make the cooked muffins turn out heavy.) Spoon into the prepared muffin cases and scatter the remaining cheese over the top. Bake for 20 minutes until risen and golden.

SPRING STEAM With three new galleries and exhibitions, the Science Museum is well worth a visit this spring. Get ready for some serious STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts & maths) fun! MATHEMATICS: THE WINTON GALLERY Making maths accessible is a major feat, but the Science Museum has found a way with Mathematics: The Winton Gallery. This new permanent exhibition reveals the importance of mathematics in our lives through remarkable historical artefacts, stories and design. Featuring over 100 items, including the Enigma machine and Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine, the gallery shows how mathematicians, their tools and ideas, have helped build the modern world over the last four centuries.

Mathematics: The Winton Gallery Science Museum

Whether we realise it or not, maths is part of everyday life. If you appreciate architecture, for example, you will understand the importance of mathematics and geometry, as is cleverly reflected in the construction of the gallery itself, which was designed by world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects. Open now, this stunning new area makes maths come alive.

WONDERLAB: THE STATOIL GALLERY

ROBOTS

The UK’s largest interactive science gallery was launched at the Science Museum last October. Replacing Launchpad, Wonderlab is 60 per cent bigger than its predecessor.

The Science Museum’s newest temporary exhibition, “Robots”, is perfectly timed for a STEAM-filled spring.

Visitors to the gallery are encouraged to think like scientists. On hand are the museum’s specially-trained Explainers, whose enthusiasm for science is infectious.

Young Wonderlab visitor is reflected inside the Infinity Boxes exhibit © Plastiques Photography

Humans have been obsessed with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the recreation of the human-form as robots for over 500 years. This new exhibit features over 100 robots, from a 16th-century mechanical monk to robots from science fiction and modernday research labs. Visitors will discover the cultural, historical and technological context of humanoid robots. Highlights include 12 working robots that visitors can interact with. The exhibition runs until 3rd S e p t e m b e r 2017. For more information, or to buy tickets, visit sciencemuseum. org.uk/robots.

With over 50 exhibits over seven zones, Wonderlab helps visitors explore everyday science that is all around us, from sound and light to forces and electricity. Young visitors can try out the large friction slide and a giant rotating model of the solar system. The gallery also holds live science shows and explosive demonstrations. Day tickets start at £6; but an annual pass — starting as low as £10 for unlimited trips over the year — is definitely worth it.

The new junior school building at St Benedict’s is one of only a handful of schools in the UK built to a set of ‘Passivhaus’ standards. The sustainable construction method means it is 96% more energy efficient than older school buildings. All the classrooms will be south facing for good natural light and will enjoy views across to Ealing Abbey. The headmaster of St Benedict’s, Andrew Johnson said: “Not only will it provide a perfect learning environment for our youngest pupils, it is also very eco-friendly – essential in the face of London’s urgent pollution problem.”

Teaching children to fly The House Schools Group is made up of three non-selective, co-educational preparatory schools for 3 – 11 year olds. The group collaborate closely, sparking off new ideas for ever more successful teaching practices. Whilst each school has a unique character, they share a common ethos: that every child is different, but deserves to learn to fly regardless of early learning abilities. High-flyers are encouraged to soar, whilst children who need extra support are given wings for their journey. The powerful combination of highly trained staff and tailor-made teaching opens up young minds to endless possibilities, encouraging them to think for themselves. Our pupils mostly call it having fun. We call it being the best they can be. The enthusiasm of our pupils has to be seen to be believed. We invite you to come along and judge for yourself at one of our weekly tours.

EDUCATION

BILINGUAL FUTURES

by CHRISTEN JAMAR

City Kids talks to Professor Hugh de Burgh, founder of Chinese immersion school, Kensington Wade Besides the obvious benefits of bilingualism, what are the other advantages to this form of education?

Kensington Wade, a Mandarin-English immersion school, prepares to open its doors to bright-eyed three and four-yearolds in September 2017. It weaves together two finely-tuned threads of educational spin: the established brand of traditional British independent education, together with the promise of a Chinese-led global future.

My own personal experience of language learning influenced my approach. [The] research has justified what I experienced myself. When I was three to five, I spoke Turkish fluently because my parents, who were English speakers, lived in a Turkishspeaking area. Later on, I forgot it, but it all came back to me in my 20s.

The appeal to the ambitious parent is unapologetic: “We all know how China is developing … In future, the advantage will be held by those who can interact with the Chinese in their own tongue,” writes headmistress, Laura Marani, on the school’s website. With that calculated vision, the opening of Kensington Wade seems particularly timely, pointing to a future where Britain pivots towards China as it turns away from Europe, while the US closes in on itself. The school was also inspired by school founder Professor Hugo de Burgh’s deep love of China and his belief in the benefits of early bilingual education. Professor de Burgh spoke to City Kids to explain just how such an immersion school would work for the nursery and reception aged children entering later this year, and for the year 6 children leaving in seven to eight years’ time.

How will Kensington Wade’s bilingual programme work? The whole idea of an immersion programme is that two languages are taught and learnt simultaneously. We’re talking about very small children, age three onwards. They learn to distinguish the two languages and the ability to identify the situations in which they use each language. For example, when they are learning something in English, they learn it in the English classroom, with a teacher who only speaks English with them, who will encourage the children to only speak English. [Then] they will go over to the Chinese classroom, where activities

I learned Chinese much later in life: I started in my 40s, in spoken Chinese, and found it a tremendous sweat. I realised that, had I learned it at ages three, four and five, it wouldn’t have been such a sweat. This convinced me that, for young Londoners to learn to speak Chinese really well, and be able to communicate in Chinese on every level — not just basic tourist speech — it would be much better if they started very young. and teaching is all in Chinese, with a Chinese speaking teacher.

Is it a 50/50 split between the two languages, or does it change as they move up the school? No, it’s a 50/50 split. Of course, as they get older, they will take on more specific subjects. So, it becomes rather more complicated to deliver, but when they are little, it’s pretty easy. They just swap teachers.

Are you expecting the students in the school to be mainly English speakers coming to learn Chinese, or vice versa? There are going to be people with English as a second language, and people for whom Chinese is a third language, as well as people for whom English is a first language. London is a very cosmopolitan city; there are parents who themselves have two languages at home already, and neither is English. We will have every variety of child, so we have to cope with every possibility.

Does learning Chinese specifically facilitate learning in any other subjects, or any other skills? For example, I read that the Chinese method of counting facilitates mental arithmetic. Learning the Chinese written language improves memory tremendously. I feel that the amount of memory work that young Chinese children have to do, disciplines their memories. So, as a university Professor with a lot of Chinese students, I am very aware of how good their memories are, and how good they are at focusing and concentrating, compared to my compatriot youngsters. As for mathematics, research tells us that Chinese numerals are much easier to grasp. There are also some linguistic reasons for why Chinese children seem to find it so much easier to progress. More to the point is that Chinese maths teachers are very good and very well trained … They ensure that the better youngsters … bring on the slower ones. CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 27

EDUCATION They are very cooperative. They are also very specialist themselves as they only teach maths, even at a very young age. So, they are professionally very proud of what they do. They are also given a lot of time to prepare lessons and give feedback very fast and very thoroughly. So, there are administrative reasons and pedagogical reasons, why they are so good in maths.

How will the Chinese educational culture be reflected at Kensington Wade, both in regards to its management and curriculum? Everything to do with learning Chinese will be a Chinese curriculum. Therefore, the methods attached will be very similar. For example, in the early years teaching [in China], there is a great deal of learning of poetry. It is not just reciting work, there will be opportunities to speak, work and discuss, always in Chinese. There is, at least, as participatory an atmosphere as can be found in English schools, but with the addition of quite a lot of group work and group learning so they can get the characters in. I suppose you might say — and I must choose my words very carefully here — that Chinese teachers, whilst I think they are immensely warm and affectionate towards early years’ children, are firmer, more disciplined and slightly more formal than English teachers for the same age group. That’s not to say there’s any less care, though.

Will Chinese poetry, literature, and history be incorporated into the curriculum? Yes, definitely, I’m very keen on that. My life has been immensely enriched by being able to read Chinese. I tend to read modern Chinese and a few poems, but of course, youngsters who start early with classics get tremendous enrichment.

How will English instruction be incorporated into the curriculum? After all, they will have to go on to British secondary schools. We have taken, as a model, the lower school curriculum of Westminster School — that was the basic framework. Then we talked to [Roger Trafford], one of our advisors who had been headmaster of the Dragon School in Oxford. So we’ve married ideas from 28 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Westminster, ideas from the Dragon, and ideas from the Civitas knowledge-based curriculum … to come up with something that is our own.

Will maths, which could be taught in either language, be taught in English, Chinese or both? Both. There are some schools in the States that teach maths only in Chinese, but that would be difficult from our point of view because we are telling our parents that their children will be prepared for the top English independent schools. For this, the children must have all the vocabulary for maths taught in English, as well as in Chinese.

Do you see any disadvantages to this form of education? If there is any disadvantage — and as a European, I regret this — we squeeze out European languages and Latin.

Do you think that Kensington Wade students, having learned Chinese in primary, will hold on to it? Because they won’t necessarily have Chinese in secondary school. I think there are two possible answers to that question. One is that the secondary schools these youngsters are going to be aiming for may well have Chinese classes, but, of course, they are classes for beginners. But since all of them all have substantial cohorts of Chinese pupils, they are going to have classes for Chinese speakers who are not beginners. In other words, in the ten years that it will take for

our youngsters to get to secondary school, I think the top British secondaries will have a Chinese-speaking stream. The other answer — the less optimistic one — is that you do forget it. I mean, I didn’t realise that I spoke Turkish until the age of 23 or 24. I went to Turkey for six months and, to my astonishment, I found myself picking it up very easily. I think the lesson from that is that it does disappear. It goes underneath, it goes somewhere inside you, but it comes out again if you know it thoroughly, if you’ve been immersed and spoken it naturally, as we hope our children will with Chinese. We hope it will come back.

Do you think that Chinese immersion is a key for Britain’s education curriculum? Do you see it as a strategic move for parents? [British] parents that we talked to at the beginning mostly had some dealings in their business with China, and they were convinced that Chinese was going to be a very important language for business, politics, and, indeed, culture in the generations ahead. It’s the sheer size of China and the fact that China is now the major trading partner for 124 countries. One young man said ‘it’s not just learning a bit of language. To do business and really understand these guys, you’ve got to know how to circulate and move among them’. That’s why he recognised that this was something their children should have; that this was a gift they could give their children.

Over the past few issues we have been following the progress of two schools: Falkner House as it prepares to open its doors for the first time in September; and Ealing Fields as its first students enter secondary education. This issue, two teachers describe their experiences.

Nearly a year after we started this journey to launch a new school, we are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel. With assessments complete, we are eagerly expecting two full classes of boys in September. Now we have to make sure we have the perfect staff for our boys — this is the most critical thing to get right! by ELEANOR DIXON

An excellent teacher does not necessarily have a conventional CV. We look for quality, and are open-minded as to where that might come from: the teacher may be male or female, come from teaching in the state or private systems, whether that be with boys or girls only, or both. The most important question is: are they a superb teacher? A superb teacher has a passion for teaching and for their area of expertise. At Falkner House, we’re also looking for someone who understands the nuances of learning, someone who can take a bespoke approach to each pupil and their family. Children should be able to enjoy every aspect of education and learning; our mission is not just about reaching a goal and passing an exam. Therefore, we choose teachers who have the confidence and wisdom to know that less can often be more; teachers who are empowered and creative enough to come up with their own ideas. Our teachers must also buy into the ethos of the school and, most importantly, the parents. Our ethos is based on striving for the best academic results, whilst offering a friendly, supportive and secure environment in which to grow and learn. A family-owned school for sixty years and counting, we are here for the long haul. We are not a profit-driven business. A teacher who understands these differences, is key. Lastly, once we find a good teacher, we know we need to look after them incredibly well because they are like gold dust. Falkner House teachers deserve being looked after and nurtured, so we endeavour to be as flexible and as generous as possible when it comes to our teachers.

Since my appointment as Director of Languages at Ealing Fields High School — almost a year ago — I have had the opportunity to help shape the direction of this brand new school. In just a few months, we have become a very close-knit team of staff. Every element of our school day can be linked to the 17 Habits of the Brave and Bold, which we all agreed upon last summer, and to the countless months of preparation our headteacher and the board did before then.

by LAUREN MITCHELL

A ‘typical day’ is something that is difficult to pin down in a school that is in its first year. As teachers, adaptability has been key. A marquee instead of a hall, and computing without computers are just some of the challenges we faced in our first weeks! Yet, we have settled remarkably fast into routines, which reflects an ethos that delights visitors and makes us proud to work here. Our school day isn’t wildly different to many others, with five periods of lessons per day, with an extended Period 6 Tuesday to Friday. This slot is reserved for Prep on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Elective Enrichment on Wednesdays and Fridays. Students really value having their voice heard when choosing their preferred activities. On Mondays, students leave after Period 5, so that staff can have weekly Personal Learning and Development sessions. One of my personal highlights of each day is Family Dining, where staff and students dine together. Students are assigned dining duty roles to assist in serving and clearing up. Between the main course and dessert, two or three students host the Values Shout-Out, celebrating how students and staff have espoused our values and habits in lessons and beyond. The Ealing Fields’s lesson structure ensures that our habits are embedded in every single lesson, constantly reinforcing the importance of becoming more effective learners, as well as acquiring subject knowledge. Our students are learning that, taking risks and working outside their comfort zone — rather than coasting — is the only way to learn. They need to grapple with the subject matter and find it challenging, or there’s no point. Of course, convincing 11- and 12-year-olds that the process is more important than ‘getting it right’ is no mean feat, but it’s amazing to see how much more resilient they are now than in September.

BOOK REVIEW

W

ith spring on its way, what better time to replenish the book shelves with some fresh new titles.

PRIMARY

JUNIOR

Princess Primose by Alex T. Smith (Scholastic)

Lots by Marc Martin (Big Picture Press)

Barry Loser and the birthday billions by Jim Smith (Egmont)

Dave Pigeon by Swapna Haddow, illustrated by Sheena Dempsey (Faber)

Another cracking story from Alex T. Smith. This time in the form of Princess Primrose, who has everything she could wish for – a beautiful palace, two ponies, and a pug. However, being so privileged comes at a price. Rules. And plenty of them, making poor Primrose’s life a misery as she is constantly in trouble. It leaves the king and queen no choice but to call upon the much-feared Grandmama to sort their little darling out. But will she be a help, or a hindrance?

This beautiful book is so visually arresting, it will have the most curious of minds entertained for hours. In the words of Marc Martin, ‘Lots is about everything and everywhere’. From far and wide – the world is celebrated. The intricacies of the illustrations will have little fingers pointing out the funny and the quirky. A stunning book, guaranteed to be read, over and over.

The eighth book in this bestselling award-winning series, Barry Loser is back and this time it’s his birthday and he gets the best present ever – The Shnozinator 9000 – a super cool gaming helmet. That is until his younger brother breaks it. Gah! What to do? Become an inventor and try to make enough money to buy a new one of course. Fans of Barry will not be disappointed – another page turning chucklefest.

The second instalment of Dave Pigeon’s adventures. This time there’s peril afoot when Dave and Skipper’s ‘Human Lady’ goes on holiday, leaving them with short supply on the food front. They soon find themselves a new owner in the form of Reginald Grimster, who has a very generous feeding habit. But is he all that he seems? And why does he own so many cook books featuring birds? Another hilarious, illustrated tale that will have youngsters in stitches.

Why Don’t we all live together anymore? by Dr Emma Wassington and Dr Christopher McCurry. Illustrated by Louis Thomas (Frances Lincoln)

This excellent book tackles the very difficult topic how to help children understand what is happening when parents divorce and how it will affect them. It focuses on questions which a child is likely to ask such as ‘Is it my fault?’ ‘Will I have to go to a different school?’ Illustrated and told from the point of view of a character who is going through the same thing – it’s a good entry point for children and adults alike to broach the subject.

Sharon Fried-Jones is a west London mum, who by day is the Head of Marketing and Digital for the charity Book Trust which inspires a love of reading in children, and by night is an aspiring children’s author with a love of clashing clothes and picture books who longs for a good night’s sleep.

SENIOR We Come Apart by Sarah Crossan and Brian Conaghan (Bloomsbury)

This interestingly written story will challenge more competent readers. Although written in verse, Crossan and Conaghan met only once, both having been nominated for a prestigious children’s literature award. They collaborated on this novel by sending chapters via WhatsApp. What they created is a beautiful book about two characters, Jess and Nicu. Jess has a lot to hide, and Nicu’s parents want to return to their homeland to marry him off. As the pair become closer, can they survive their secrets? CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 35

WHO IS? CECILIA CROSSLEY FOUNDER OF FROM BABIES WI TH LOVE

Describe yourself in three words A bit silly! How did From Babies With Love begin? When I became a parent, watching charity adverts about the hardship children face all over the world made me determined to make a difference. The emotions of becoming a parent fuelled my belief that every baby should have a fair start in life, no matter where they’re born. I was out shopping for baby clothes when I thought to myself: if I could buy beautiful baby products and know the profit helps children in need, why would I buy anywhere else? And so From Babies with Love was born.

l Little Ange We love the on gt n li Is Theatre in

From Babies with Love speaks to the powerful emotions parents feel for the welfare of children universally. It also appeals to style-conscious parents who want beautiful products. From Babies with Love satisfies both desires in a unique, memorable way. What’s a typical day for you? I don’t really have one. I do the morning school run on most days, and then find myself working with lots of talented people that make From Babies with Love what it is. Sometimes I’m singing nursery rhymes to babies to get a smile on a photo-shoot, sometimes in a suit pitching to a client in the City. Generally it’s me and my laptop on the go, checking in with the office from where ever I am. I like that each day is different, that there’s always something new and that I’ve usually flung myself somewhere far outside of my comfort zone!

50 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Who inspires you? Dame Anita Roddick, for how she incorporated her values, her views on human rights and the environment into the core of her business and pioneered how ethics can drive consumer behaviour. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? “Watch your thoughts, they become your words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” A quote rather than advice I’ve directly been given, but I find it very powerful. What would you take to a desert island? Of course my family. And Netflix. Where’s your favourite spot in London? A very difficult question, I’m going to go for Islington. I guess because both my children were born there I have quite an attachment to the place. I still take the kids back, for example we love the Little Angel Theatre. What’s your biggest luxury? A facial. What’s next for From Babies With Love? We have lots of exciting projects ahead, including expanding our collection into more new product categories, all of which will help us support even more children. We currently support over 2,000 across 35 countries, the need is so great that we move onwards and upwards from here. www.frombabieswithlove.org
