StoryWalk® Program Enhanced with Permanent Signage

The City of Fort St. John, FSJ Public Library, and FSJ Literacy Society have long championed the StoryWalk® program, blending the joys of outdoor exploration with the magic of storytelling. This innovative initiative has allowed residents and visitors alike to embark on enchanting strolls through the city's parks, flipping through pages of captivating storybooks strategically placed along picturesque trails. However, despite its popularity, the program faced occasional challenges, particularly during inclement weather conditions, which often led to cancellations and postponements. The use of removable stakes for signage installation proved susceptible to the whims of nature, leaving participants disappointed and eager for a solution.

Now, thanks to the generous support of Northern Health and the Imagine Grant, the City is poised to elevate the StoryWalk® experience to new heights with permanent signage to house the book pages in Toboggan Hill Park. A significant portion of the project will be covered by the $10,000 Imagine Grant.

"The StoryWalk® program has been a beloved fixture in our community, promoting literacy, health, and outdoor recreation," remarked David Green, recreation programmer at the City of Fort St. John. "With the installation of permanent signage, we are not only enhancing the accessibility and durability of the program but also reaffirming our commitment to fostering a vibrant and healthy community for everyone."

Stay tuned on the City of Fort St. John Recreation Facebook page as we plan to unveil these enhancements with a grand opening!

COURSE COURTESY

Remain quiet and avoid unnecessary movements while others are throwing.

Stand behind the player who is throwing until throw is complete.

Remove disc from the basket after completing the hole.

Allow faster groups to play through when possible.

Wait for other park users to move off the course before throwing a disc.

Do not alter the course (trees, bushes, or other objects) in any way.

Have you tried the disc golf course yet?

It’s like golf - except instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you throw a disc into a basket.

How to play

The goal is to play each hole with the fewest throws possible.

Use a disc golf disc or, if you don’t have one yet, you can play with any throwing disc or Frisbee.

You start each hole throwing from a tee pad. Choose the tee pad difficulty you want to play, blue being the most difficult and green being the easiest.

The player with the least amount of strokes on the previous hole is the first to tee off at the next hole.

After all players have teed off, the player whose disc is farthest from the hole throws first.

NORTH PEACE SECONDARY SCHOOL

A disc that comes to rest in the disc golf basket or suspended in the chains makes the successful completion of that hole.

If a throw lands out of bounds, it must be played from a point up to 1 meter in bounds from where the disc crossed over the out of bounds line. Roads, paved trails, private property, and park boundaries are all usually out of bounds.

we grow rainbows

harvest & share • learn to connect with nature & grow food!

We Grow Rainbows is back to celebrate the summer break of growing with a 4 day workshop series, brought to you by Catherine Ruddell of Creatively Sustained, Plan h, and the City of Fort St. John.

REFLECT | Monday, August 26

As summer holidays come to a close, we gather again to share about our gardening successes and challenges. This session will give participants an opportunity to show and tell about their gardens, with stories, observations and reflections on what they learned while growing food. Participants are encouraged to send in 2 pictures of their garden or what they grew when they register. The photos will be added to a digital slideshow that we will watch and talk about together. Bring your notebooks so you can capture information from other participants about what you might like to try next year. We will also take an inventory of what we have grown that we could contribute to a group meal at the end of the week. Bags will be provided so that participants can collect and bring in some of their harvest.

HARVEST | Tuesday, August 27

Participants will report back on what they have and how much they can contribute to our community meal. We will pull out the art supplies again to create a menu, invitations, and prepare ingredient lists and recipes for the meal we are going to make together. We will also discuss the chores that come up at the end of the season, such as what can manage a bit of frost, what should be pulled up from garden beds, composting materials, as well as harvest storage.

PREP & STORE | Wednesday, August 28

For this session we will gather in the Kids Arena Fieldhouse kitchen. We will wash, cut and prep our ingredients for our meal the next day. We will take some time to also swap recipes for our favorite dishes with different vegetables, so that we can try new meals with our families over the fall. We will talk about canning, freezing, and other ways to store our harvest.

SHARE | Thursday, August 29

This session will also take place in the Kids Arena Fieldhouse kitchen. Today is the day we cook! We will make and eat our meal together. We will give thanks for each person's contributions, and celebrate our summer. We will share stories about the process of working together through this program, and what we still want to learn more about for next year. We will brainstorm ways that we can keep learning outside of the program format over the winter. We will tidy up our space and head out with a gratitude practice.

We Grow Rainbows - Final event | Sunday, September 29

Join Catherine and our Arts and Culture team for an en plein-air art experience with a field trip to a local farm to explore their fall harvesting and celebrate the end of season with a pre-packed picnic style lunch from local vendors.

To register, visit fortstjohn.ca/ActiveNet and search "rainbows"
