Registration Procedures

Approved Refunds

Registration is accepted on a first come first serve basis.

Registration can be completed in three ways:

All approved refunds are subject to:

1. Online at fortstjohn.ca/ActiveNet (valid credit card required) 2. In person at the North Peace Leisure Pool or at the Pomeroy Sport Centre 3. Over the phone by calling Pomeroy Sport Centre: 250-785-4592 or North Peace Leisure Pool: 250-787-8178 (valid credit card required) Full payment is required at the time of registration. Payment plans are not permitted.

Classes with insufficient registration are subject to cancellation, postponement, or classes may be combined.

Class dates and times are subject to change.

a) A 10% administration fee, unless the program is canceled by the City; b) Credit card transactions are subject to a processing fee that is non-refundable.

Declined Refund Requests Requests that are not approved will be followed up in writing explaining the rational for denying the request within three (3) business days.

Credits Customers may choose to receive their approved refund as a credit to their ActiveNet account.

All online credit card transactions are subject to a fee charged

by ActiveNet and are not included in any refunds.

Credits will be issued for the unused portion of a program following the City’s Program Registration Refund Policy.

A 3.5% credit card non-refundable surcharge is applied to all credit card purchases, including registrations taken over the phone and in-person. For more information on the City of Fort St. John’s refund policy.

All credits must be used by December 31 in the calendar year it was issued. If there is a credit balance at the end of the calendar year, a refund cheque for the balance of the credit will be issued by mail to the mailing address.

Pre-paid Passes

Transfer

Single, six (6) and twelve (12) visit passes can be purchased at the Visitor Centre, North Peace Leisure Pool or online at fortstjohn.ca/ActiveNet.

A transfer is permitted following the City’s Program Registration Refund Policy or at the recommendation of the instructor.

Passes are available for drop-in ice, fitness and fieldhouse programs as well as for the North Peace Leisure Pool. You can check how many uses you have left on all your passes by logging on to fortstjohn.ca/ActiveNet.

Email copies are free of charge. Printed copies are available for a $1.00 charge per receipt.

Reprinting of Receipts

Refunds Full refunds for courses, classes, or private rentals will be granted in the following instances: 1. The city cancels the program; 2. The request for the refund is received a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the start of the program; 3. For requests received less than seven (7) days prior to the start of the program, refunds will only be granted provided the city is able to fill the spot; 4. In the event that a customer falls ill or becomes injured, inhibiting their ability to participate in or continue participation in a program or utilize a facility pass or punch card, a pro-rated refund may be given based upon the date of the refund request. Documentation (such as a doctor’s note) is required for illnesses or injury claims.

A private rental includes private group facility rentals such as birthday parties offered by the Recreation & Leisure Department.

Booking & Allocation Process The City of Fort St. John works responsibly to manage recreational spaces in an equitable manner. In order to meet current and future demands for all users, an allocation process is conducted with user groups. Facilities are rented on a first come, first serve basis for any vacant time slots.

Allocations are scheduled throughout the year based on activity. All those interested in regular access to recreation facilities are encouraged to participate in the facility allocation process.

Paying by credit card?

Council passed a Bylaw requiring you to pay an extra 3.5% to cover the fees credit card companies charge the City.

With the addition of the Festival Plaza changes have been made to the allocation periods for all recreation allocation spaces. Our user groups have been in close contact throughout the year and we continue to work with each group.

New and emerging sport and cultural activities that are interested in being included in the allocations process, or to be added to the mailing list, email reservations@fortstjohn.ca.

Snowshoeing & Cross Country Skiing Snowshoeing and cross country skiing are very popular activities in Fort St. John when the snow flies and residents are welcome to explore our City Parks this way. For more information about skiing and snowshoeing locations, visit the Fort St. John Visitor Centre.

Stop by the Visitor Centre or view online at fortstjohn.ca

Snowshoes are available to rent at the Fort St. John Visitor Centre (inside the Pomeroy Sport Centre) when snow levels are high enough

•

Snowshoe rentals cost $7.00 per pair, per week.

•

A deposit is not required but renters will be subject to fees in the event of loss, damage, etc.

•

All participants will be required to sign a waiver prior to loaning the snowshoes

•

Maximum rental period is 14 days

Snowshoe/Skiing Etiquette • Be courteous towards other trail users • When traveling in a group, walk single-file • U se the trail in a safe manner • Snow should be at least 6 inches deep to snowshoe or cross country ski (any less and snowshoes or skis could be damaged) • Check your equipment before you go • Stay on designated trails (do not take snowshoes or skis on paved trails) • Be aware of possible wildlife encounters • Keep to the right when approaching oncoming trail users or while being passed • Pack out what you bring in (leave no trace) • Use waste receptacles provided

Outdoor Rinks

Embrace northern living by enjoying several outdoor ice surfaces! Check out the locations for all your recreational needs. Operation of outdoor rinks is strictly weather dependent.

CM Finch

The C.M. Finch arena is located at C.M. Finch Elementary. This ice surface is maintained by the Sunrise Rotary Club. There are boards and a covered area to lace up skates and take breaks.

Mathews Park Skating Loop

Our most popular outdoor skating space is located at Mathews Park! Remember to bring your skates and enjoy your day with family and friends. Leisure skating only, no hockey permitted on the loop. Follow the City of Fort St. John Recreation Facebook Page for updates and opening dates.

Kin Park

Located near Bert Ambrose Elementary School, featuring a hockey rink and a multi-use rink with overhead lights!

Know before you go • Bring your own pucks for the rinks that allow hockey • Share the space with other users • Dress for the weather (wear layers) • Bring a lawn chair to lace up your skates • Helmets are highly recommended

Northern Vac Track

Too cold outside? Join us for an indoor walk (or run) at the Northern Vac Track. The track is located on the third floor of the Pomeroy Sport Centre and is free for public use.

Lockers are provided on the track to store your belongings.

Bring your own lock or borrow one from the front desk of the Visitor Centre.

This track accommodates both runners and walkers, as well as wheel chairs, walkers, and strollers (with clean wheels).

Choose the appropriate lane for your speed of travel and be respectful of others who travel faster or slower than you.

Don’t forget you clean indoor shoes!

Slow Skate

Public Skate

Have a leisurely skate while socializing with others. This session is ideal for young children, beginners, or individuals who simply want to skate at a slower pace.

Fast Skate

This session requires moderate to excellent skating skills.

Participants are expected to move at a fast pace with minimal stopping on the ice.

Note: Skate sessions do not have age restrictions and are based on skating ability. Children 8 years and younger must be accompanied on the ice by a guardian of 16 years of age.

For health reasons, all swimmers are required to shower thoroughly before entering the pool.

Children Under 8

Must be accompanied by a parent/guardian 16+ and must remain within arms reach at all times. Ratio of children under 8 to adults is 3:1.

Water Diapers

Swimmers who are not fully potty-trained must wear water pants (for example Little Swimmers, water diapers, etc.). Water diapers are available to purchase at the front desk.

Life Jackets

Complimentary to all swimmers.

Waterslides

Children must be 42 inches tall to ride the slides. Due to BC Safety Authority regulations and manufacturer specifications, double riding is not permitted.

Food & Beverage

Permitted in the lobby viewing area only. No food or glass containers on pool deck except water in sealed, plastic containers.

Sept 9 | Community One Stop Do you represent an organization or provide programs that require registration? One Stop is a great opportunity to advertise and get participants signed up. One Stop will take place at the Totem Mall from 10am-2pm. Groups wanting to reserve a spot must register in advance at the Visitor Centre. $20 per table.

Sept 10 | Thank you PETRONAS Skate Thank you PETRONAS! Everyone is welcome for the first PETRONAS Free Skate of the season at the Pomeroy Sport Centre Oval between 1:30-3:30pm & 4:30-6:30pm. Note: Children 8 years and younger must be accompanied on the ice by a guardian of 16 years of age or older. Free admission, helmets are recommended.

Sept 23 | Energetic Amazing Race The Energetic Amazing Race is back. Register a team for an exciting foot pursuit around Fort St. John. Teams will receive clues, run to the locations, and complete fun challenges. There will be a family division and adult division. Come up with a great team costume ideas for a chance to win a prize in each division. Teams must register in advance by calling or stopping by the Fort St. John Visitor Centre. All participants will be required to sign a waiver prior to racing.

Oct 16 | Parenting: Creating Confident Problem Solvers and Decision Makers Join Registered Clinical counsellor and author, Sabrina Trobak. Workshop topics: Learning how to help your children believe they are good enough, important and valued. Parenting strategies that teach your child to have a voice, problem solve and make healthy decisions. The workshop will take place 6:30 - 8:30pm in the first floor meeting room of the Pomeroy Sport Centre. This is a dropin workshop, no registration required, free of cost.

Kick off the holidays with Fort St. John’s most festive event!

Join us on the parade route and enjoy the parade starting at 5pm, then take in the celebrations at Centennial Park.

There will be hotdogs, hot chocolate, Christmas carols, a special visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and our annual Christmas Tree Light Up. This is a free event.

Nov 17 | GLOWvember Skate & Walk Ready, set, glow! The lights will be low on the Northern Vac Track and the Oval so bring your glow sticks and come for a night walk or a skate at the Pomeroy Sport Centre from 4-7pm. This is an everyone welcome session. Regular admission rates apply for skating.

Oct 31 | Spooky Swim & Movie - Hocus Pocus

City of Fort St. John Workshop Series with Sabrina Trobak: Sabrina Trobak (MACP, RCC, CCC-S) and the City of Fort St. John are working together to present some mental health workshops for the community free of cost.

There will be a workshop on the third Monday of each month from Sept - Nov, with an extra zoom workshop just for men on Monday Sept 25.

Sabrina is a registered clinical counsellor who was raised in Fort St John. Sabrina was a teacher for over 20 years and then started working as a counsellor. She started her own private practice, Trobak Holistic Counselling, in Fort St. John over 13 years ago. The model’s focus is in understanding the impact of past trauma on daily life. Sabrina is also the author of Not Good Enough, Understanding Your Core Belief & Anxiety - A Handbook.

Parent & Tot 1 – Jellyfish/Goldfish

Jellyfish Prerequisite: Participants must be 4-12 months and accompanied by a caregiver. Goldfish Prerequisite: Participants must be 12-24 months and accompanied by a caregiver.

Jellyfish provides an orientation to water for infants and their caregiver. Caregivers will learn how to swim safely with their infant in the pool through instruction of holds and supports. Infants will be introduced to getting their face wet, blowing bubbles and floating with the help of their caregiver.

Goldfish will teach toddlers how to play in the water safely and how to enter and exit the water with help from their caregiver.

Toddlers will also develop floating and kicking skills with the support of their caregiver.

Parent & Tot – Seahorse

Prerequisite: 2-3 years and accompanied by a caregiver.

Seahorse Teaches toddlers how to safely enter the water wearing a PFD. Swimmers will develop underwater skills such as submersion and opening their eyes underwater. Toddles will learn starfish floats, pencil floats and kicking skills taught using songs and games.

Preschool 1 – Octopus

Preschool 1 is a transitional level which transfers the preschooler to the care of the instructor. Preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. They’ll learn how to put their face in the water, blow bubbles in the water, and how to float and glide.

Preschool 2 – Crab

Swimmer 1

Beginners will become comfortable jumping into the water with and without a PFD. They’ll learn how to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. Floats, glides and kicking skills are introduced.

Swimmer 2

Prerequisite: Completed Swimmer 1 or Preschool 5 These swimmers will jump into deeper water and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a PFD. They’ll learn how to tread water, develop kicking skills, and will be introduced to front crawl and back crawl.

Swimmer 3

Prerequisite: Completed Swimmer 2 Swimmers will learn how to dive and will do in-water somersaults and handstands to develop weight-transfer skills. They’ll learn Swim to Survive® skills, whip kick on back and will further develop their front and back crawl.

Swimmer 4

Prerequisite: Completed Swimmer 3 Swimmers will become better at diving, treading water, and swimming underwater. They’ll learn the Swim to Survive® standard and start to develop breaststroke. Front and back crawl are further developed

Swimmer 5

Prerequisite: Completed Swimmer 4

Crab teaches swimmers how to safely jump into chest-deep water and how to swim wearing a PFD. They’ll learn submersion skills and continue to work on floats, glides, and kicking with buoyant objects

Swimmers will master dives and swimming in deep water. Swimmers will further their Swim to Survive® skills and start to develop eggbeater kick, while breaststroke, front crawl, and back crawl are further developed. Swimmers will also be challenged by interval training and sprinting drills.

Preschool 3 – Orca

Swimmer 6

Teaches preschoolers how to enter deep water safely wearing a PFD. They’ll learn hot to submerge and exhale underwater, retrieve objects underwater, and will continue developing their floating, gliding, and kicking skills.

Swimmers will become proficient at deep water skills including stride entries and compact jumps. They’ll develop lifesaving kicks such as eggbeater and scissor kick, while further developing the breaststroke, front crawl, and back crawl are further developed. They’ll develop strength and endurance with head-up swims, interval training and a 300m workout.

Prerequisite: Completed Octopus.

Prerequisite: Completed Crab.

Sea Lion

Prerequisite: Completed Orca.

Sea Lion teaches deep-water entries and treading water wearing a PFD. Preschoolers will become skilled at retrieving objects from the bottom of the pool in chest-deep water and performing front and side glide. Front crawl wearing a PFD is also introduced.

Narwhal

Prerequisite: Completed Sea Lion.

Narwhal teaches Swim to Survive® skills wearing a PFD, front and back crawl and interval fitness training. Preschoolers will also learn how to tread water and perform vertical whip kick with a buoyant aid. Once complete, preschoolers can register into Swimmer 2.

Prerequisite: Completed Swimmer 5

Adult Swimmer - Beginner

This program is for beginners age 19+ who are looking to get

comfortable in the water while learning basic floats and kicks.

Swimmers learn water safety, proper use of PFDs, and work to build their confidence in a safe environment.

Teen/Adult Swimmer - Beginner

This program is for beginners age 12+ who are looking to get comfortable in the water while learning basic floats and kicks.

Fall Swim Lessons (Oct 14 - Dec 22) The North Peace Leisure Pool serves 7,690 residents ages 0-14 years. Due to instructor availability and pool space at capacity, only 41.6% of resident children and youth are able to register and participate in swimming lessons at this time. Needless to say, our swim lessons are in high demand and fill up quickly. Below are some tips and information to help streamline the registration process.

Private Swim Lesson

Lessons allow a participant to work on any skill requested.

Prerequisite skills are required for each lesson to ensure participants have the necessary skills to progress to the next lesson. Skills are manually entered by staff and may take up to 2 business days.

Swim evaluations are offered 2 days prior to the start of registration for participants that do not know which level to register in.

We Grow Rainbows We Grow Rainbows is a safe and generative space for diverse community members to gather and learn with, and from one another. In this interactive experience, youth participants will complete monthly activities where they will plan, develop, plant, grow, harvest & maintain gardens, and learn to prepare meals.

Private Skating Lessons

New to skating or want to brush up on some skills? Try our private skating lessons! Lessons are 30 minutes in duration and run once a week for 5 weeks. Using the Active Communities Learn to Skate Program, participants will work on balance, stopping, turning, and getting more comfortable on the ice. Lessons are available for all ages and abilities. Only direct family members in the same household can team-up in the same lesson session. There are very limited spots available for this program. Maximum 2 skaters per session. Courses & Training Babysitting Course

Bronze Star

This Canadian Red Cross Course is aimed towards children ages 11 - 15 and teaches the business of babysitting, creating safe environments while caring for children from infant to school age, how to handle emergencies, and basic first aid situations. Completion Requirements: 100% attendance and skills demonstration.

The Lifesaving Society's Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion.

Recommended that candidates swim a minimum of 100 metres of front crawl, back crawl, and breast stroke, and are 12 years old (by last day).

Bronze Cross Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safety supervision. The Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities.

Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs.

StaySafe! teaches age-appropriate youth the skills to improve his or her own safety in their community or on their own. This group will be given better tools to stay safe in a variety of different situations. This all day class is a great way to fill a non-instructional day off from school.

Don’t forget your lunch and bathing suit as this session will include swim time. Class held at the Pomeroy Sport Centre (internal meeting room).

Standard First Aid (OFA level 1 Equivalent)

Rookie participants continue to develop front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Swimmers develop individual fitness to meet a timed 100m swim and 350m workout. Water proficiency skills include swimming with clothes, ready position, and feet-first/head-first surface dives. They’ll demonstrate first aid skills such as the ability to conduct a primary assessment and calling EMS, victim recognition and throwing assists.

Ranger Patrol participants will enhance capability in the water including stride entries and underwater, forward and backward somersaults. Swimmers learn lifesaving sport skills with a lifesaving stroke medley, timed object support and a non-contact rescue with a buoyant aid. Eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels are developed to meet a 200m timed swim. First aid focuses on unconscious victims and obstructed airway procedures. Star Patrol challenges swimmers with a 300m timed swim, 600m workout and a 25m object carry. Strokes are continued to be refined. Lifesaving skills include use of rescue aids, defense methods, victim removals and supporting a victim in shallow water. First aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies. Once complete, swimmers register into Bronze Star.
