What is Pickleball?!

Although pickleball has been around since 1965, its sudden surge in popularity is recent. You can drop in and try out the new craze at Pomeroy Sport Centre court sports (see page 12) or give it a whirl on the new pickleball courts located in Kin Park! Checkout the official rules: pickleballcanada.org/play-and-learn.

THE QUIRKIER RULES OF PICKLEBALL

Pickleball is something of a mix between tennis, racquetball and ping pong. Players use special paddles and a wiffle ball, and games take place on tennis courts with specific pickleball lines. Nets and court sizes are smaller than their tennis counterparts, and the most common game is doubles, but singles is possible. It has its own set of quirky rules — for instance, try to stay out of the “kitchen”— but they’re easy to learn.

THE KITCHEN

This 7-foot section of the court is on either side of the net at the front. Pickleball players cannot hit balls out of the air with volleys if standing in this area.

COURT RULES

TWO BOUNCE RULE

Both teams must play their first shot after letting the ball bounce. The receiving team must let the serve bounce and the serving team must let the return of the serve bounce before playing it.

10-SECOND RULE

Pickleball has instituted a 10-second rule to discourage those players who take forever to serve. If 10 seconds elapse without a serve, the ref can issue a technical warning. If this delay continues, referees can choose to award the opposing team a point.

• No skateboards, bikes, scooters or in-line skates

• No food or glass

• No pets

• Use courts at your own risk

See below for some excellent spring time practices to set your trees up to thrive!

PRUNING

• Late winter/early spring is a good time to prune before tree tissues become active.

• Remove dead, damaged & dying branches.

• Ensure proper pruning cuts to reduce stress and promote rapid healing.

• Do not remove more than a quarter of the tree’s canopy in one season.

PLANTING

• Time to plan for new trees to be planted.

• Be sure to expose the tree root flare before planting so the tree is not planted too deep.

FERTILIZING

• Slow-release fertilizers can be a good nutrient source for trees.

• Be sure to follow label directions.

TRUNK & ROOT

• Mulching a minimum 3 foot diameter around the base of your trees will provide protection for the roots and trunk from the use of trimmers and mowers.

• 4 inches of mulch provides protection from erosion, evaporation, compaction and competition from weeds and grass.

• Be sure to keep mulch approximately 4 inches away from the tree trunk to avoid rot and disease from happening.

WATERING

• Ensure adequate moisture availability during spring.

• Evergreens are very active in the spring and this is when they utilize a large amount of water.

• Trees need adequate amounts of moisture for growth, repair, reproduction and storage of nutrients.

• If the base of a tree has been buried in snow from adjacent streets or sidewalks, additional watering will help dissolve the accumulated salts.
