Art in Its Genes
这十年来的槟城，我们看得到，感受得 到，艺术的味儿渐浓，艺术的内涵有在 增加。
世界文化遗产城的地位和效应，加上各 方努力，许多新契机新可能正在发生， 包括艺术。8月的槟城，因长达一个月 的乔治市艺术节庆典，系列活动和节目 把全城变为艺术大舞台。实际上，除了 这场年度艺术节，我们的艺术环境，在 许许多多的有心人和有想法的团体带动 下，一步步迈向豁然和开朗。
In Penang, art appreciation is growing with increasing sophistication. Becoming a World Heritage City and the efforts of various arts-minded individuals and organisations have brought about new opportunities and possibilities. This August, Penang will again be centre stage for the arts as the city plays host to an exciting series of events during the month-long George Town Festival. But the energy and buzz is by no means confined to the festival. The local art scene will come alive as well with activities for all, as arts groups and arts enthusiasts join in the celebration and put their passion to work. A vibrant arts scene nourishes the soul of a city’s citizens. While it may not appear to have an impact on many, art has the subtle power to inspire, uplift and shape a person’s character. For this special issue, we uncover places and events in Penang that carry the so-called “Art gene”.

Located in Dewan Sri Pinang, the Pena ng State Art Gallery is the Penang’s foremost venue for art. From the many talented artists in Penang, the gallery selects one each year to feature in a retrospective exhibition. Unfortunately, even with free entry, the gallery attracts only a few thousand visitors every year. Penang State Art Gallery Committee chair man and art collector Lee Khai who has been promoting art for many years said that the gallery’s present space is not ideal for a city aspir ing to become a smart, international city. He said, “We need to lead people to places where we want them to go. Many people in Penang dare not approach art because it is often associated with a struggling life, and because parents believe making art is not a viabl e career path. However, paradoxically, the most expensive things in the world one can make or buy is art!” That ’s certainly a statement wort h pondering.

心， 又怎 么 谈艺 术普 及化 呢？ 201 1年 成立 ，位 於斯 里丹绒槟榔的海峽岸广场 ，有无敌海 景、 2万 2千 平方 尺的 “槟 城表 演艺 术中 心”，目前是北马最专业的 表演中心。 虽然 观众 反应 并不 理想 ，中 心甚 至曾 经 公開 募款 筹募 营运 费， 但传 播表 演艺 术 的努 力并 不因 此停 下。 当艺 术工 作者 为 了三 两位 观众 仍落 力演 出， 当最 美好 的 表演 空间 都具 备了 ，这 里最 需要 的就 是 观众的支持，掏钱买票看表 演。 Without a venue for perform ing arts, how are we to promote dance and drama? Much has changed since the old Hin Bus depot was transfor med from a workshop into Hin Depot, an art and event space. Bus Even Jalan Gurdwara where it is located has found a new leas of live, thanks to like-minded e operators who set up shop in its vicinity. This is a far cry from the depot’s previous incarnation when it was no more than a collection dilapidated buildings destine of d for demolition. The twist of fate came when Mr Tan Shih Hin Bus Depot’s manager, dec Thoe, ided to repurpose the site whi le preserving the original bui complete with its time-worn lding appearance. It is because of this light touch of his that visi today are able to experience tors Hin Bus Depot’s unique sense of place. Home to galleries, shops, a Sunday flea market, craft cafés and other attractions — it is today a meeting place for who appreciate a little imagina those tive conjuring.

城市人渐渐将种植视为修行，因为他 们发现心灵越来越贫瘠。近年，农物 直达餐桌的行动，被视为回归土地和 身心，亦是食品安全危机中的自救缩 影。本地有机食品诚兴（Zenxin） 选用在地农夫耕作的蔬菜，与真食 Real Food Penang联手合作的From Organic Farm to Table 行动，在小 食当道，主题餐厅和老饭店繁多精彩 的槟城，如同清澈流水，缓缓流过周 边的重口味。

认真办一场室内从农地到餐 桌的，有多难呢？ 在这场“从有机农场到餐桌”的 蔬食宴上，蔬菜是主角，香料 和酱汁是配角。蔬菜全是在地 当季的有机蔬。烹饪的方式， 则是回到食物原点，凸显食材 本身，体现蔬菜最简单纯粹的 味道。 强调蔬菜本身的原汁原味之 余，并不刻意生食。好土地种 出优良蔬食，食材本身味道与 口感已经出众，不需过多调 味，也能让人吃得津津有味。
宴上，主人家边上菜，边讲解食材的种植过程，如何分辨与在超市买的食材差
别等，让人认识到手中餐盘里的食物从哪来。端上桌的蔬食，以精致餐饮的模式呈 现，分量品尝八道佳肴的美味，由前菜、小食、主食、饮料到甜点的丰富组合，让 吃的人体验到食物的故事与温度。

供平台让本地蔬菜的自给率提升，给予消费者更安心的食材。人们吃到本地有机蔬 菜，有机农夫收入亦得到保障。
目前，定期举办从农地到餐桌活动的个体户渐增加。槟城的野逸园（Wonder
WilderFarm）每周都在自家菜园里进行这项食鲜行动。中马的“呆食厨房”做出精致 的全菜宴、“園中桌思家菜”、“Sitka”等，也各自皆精彩。

大家都想要有平台，让别人看见自己。集合各路艺文人马的艺 术市集，是设计师和艺术家面向大众的平台。逐渐在槟城活络 起来的艺术市集，不只是一个场地而已，它记录着一个个设计 师、艺术家的作品与成长，它是一座移动的巨型生活美学馆。

有趣的是，当所有的手工或手制品归纳为一门艺术，艺术市集 的参与门槛相对较低，这种类型的市集更接近是平民艺术，一 个属于平民的艺术舞台。

Everyone is looking for a way to best express themselves. The Art Market is a one that allows designers and artists to showcase their work to the public. This market has gained a reputation in Penang for its concept but also the support of artists and designers. Interestingly, when participation was open to a wider group of artists, the market attracts even more people, making it truly an art market for the people.

Street celebrations take plac e in Penang year-round. In January, the festive mood of Chinese New Year fills the streets, as the predominantly Hokkien community in Penang holds grand celebrations and prayers for the Jade Emperor. At about the same time, Hin dus celebrate Thaipusam, the highlight of which is a street procession. In February, there is the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta whi ch coincides with Chinese New Year, offering many the rare opp ortunity to enjoy a bird eye’s view of Penang on a hot air ball oon ride. In April, Thais welcome their new year with Songkran, whe n worshippers and visitors at Thai temples are encourage d to spray water at each oth er for blessings. Also taking place in April is the Penang International Food Festival, a mouthwatering event tha t gives credence Penang ’s reputation as a gourmet city . George Town World Heritag e Day in July and the George Tow n Festival in August have bot h become extended events for all in the family. In Octobe r, Taoist Penangites celebrate the nine-day long Nine-Emperors’ birthday. There is much to cele brate in Penang throughout the year and the abundance of events testifies to the city ’s extraordinary cultural credenti als.

台湾国宝级念 歌艺师杨秀卿 的 念 歌 表 演， 节 20 17 年 里 让 是乔治市艺术 人难忘的传统 歌谣演出。

看23岁的全职摄影师李俊杰（Ivan Lee）航拍系列槟城的作品，特别振奋。那
一幅幅视角独特，鸟瞰槟城各方位的照片，让我们看出无穷的趣味来。
“之前常听人说槟城很闷，没什么好看的。我想要颠覆大家对槟城的印象。”他
说。因为不忿这样的说法，他在路上看到景物时，会想象从高空拍下来的画面，结合一 些想法加以构思，搭配光和影的运用，于是记录了我们看不见的，独有的城市样貌。
一开始，俊杰用手机拍摄，接着是数码单反相机，然后再延伸到无人机高空
拍摄。从此之后，航拍这玩意他爱上了，也玩出了味儿。他尝试从不同的视野角度 出发，用鸟瞰拍摄的方式，让大家看到不一样的槟城。
迄今，他花了两年时间拍了槟城大桥、Escape Water Park、峇都丁宜海滨等
槟城代表性地标，成果让人惊艳。除了槟城，Ivan也慢慢把触角延伸到更多地方进 行高空航拍，如吉隆坡、新加坡、外国等地。
用鸟瞰方式拍摄记录自己的家乡，俊杰在满足了自己 的摄影创意发挥之外，他其实更想让下一代看见当下 的槟城风貌。因为，照片不会‘死亡’，多年后的槟 城将不再是现在的样子。通过记录大幅城市面貌的俯 视图，他做到了向后代展示当代槟城大景。

工作，他是孤军奋战。所谓的 最佳角度，就是等待着脑中所 构思的画面出现，然后按下快 门。他笑言一个人拍久了也会 感到寂寞，也试过参与摄影学 会活动，但后来因理念不契 合，最后还是选择一人上路。
“一个人也好，可以慢慢
思考很多东西，思绪和想法会 更清晰。”现在开始有同好相 约拍照交流，他喜欢双向交 流，因为相信每个人身上都有 可学习的地方，即使只是摄影 初学者。
对俊杰来说，许多的赞
美固然让人开心，但都不及 有心人告知“我想拍出更理想 的槟城照片”这话更宽慰。无 他，这是良性竞争，更多人的 努力，更多美好的瞬间，等于 让槟城被更多人看见！

与乔治市共生 雕塑城市面貌 公共艺术，也就是不花你一分钱就可以欣赏到，存在 公共空间的任何艺术品。槟城公共艺术除了有壁画， 其实还有一些雕塑。遍布乔治市的52幅铁线漫画艺 术，就像黑白的单格漫画，一格格的去看，就会发掘 一条街的过去和旧生活，让整个城市生动起来。 转个弯，遇上各式壁画创作，国内外艺术家用他们的 巧手和独特的视角记录在地，融合在地人文情感，共 鸣得来各展风姿。乔治市成了一匹优美画布，展现公 共艺术的街头画廊。 Public art is art in public spaces that is free for all to enjoy. In Penang, other than murals, public art includes sculptures as well. The 52 black iron-rod sculptures installed throughout George Town are like comic strips that tell the story of local streets and neighbourhoods. Turn a corner and you are likely to find a mural. Painted by local and international artists, each is a showcase of the artist’s unique style and point of view. Many of these sculptures and murals reflect the heritage or creative possibility of their sites, and elevate the streets of George Town into an engaging gallery of public art.

画的 身影 ，随 身一 个画 板、一 张纸、 一支笔 ，他们 是城市 素描者 。这全 球性的 概念， 由本 地画家 庄嘉强 和邱昌 仁带回 槟城， 透过社 交媒体 召集有 兴趣者 外出 写生， 在路上 各找作 画角度 。大部 份参与 人都不 是画家 ，不在 乎画 笔下的美丑，只用自己独有的视角说地方的故事 。 捕捉当 下未消 失一刻 的同时 ，速写 槟城发 挥己身 棉薄之 力，唤 醒公 众对社 会议题 的关注 ，比如 他们选 择用画 笔素描 净选大 集会。 速写 槟城，本身就是一道民主的公共艺术风景线。 It is not unusual to come across a group of peopl e sketching on the streets of George Town. They are the Urban Sketchers of Penang (USP), a group of artists exercising their love for their city with just pen or pencil and paper. The local chapter of this global art movement is led by Penang artists Ch’ng Kiah Kiean and Khoo Chiang Jin. Through social media, they gather individuals to go on sketching outings throu ghout Penang to capture the city’s many guises and moods. Most partic ipants are not artists and harbour no demanding expectations for their works. They are more interested in using their skills to record their uniqu e experiences. While immortalising scenes of Penang is their purpose, USP has also attempted social commentary. For example, they chose to sketch during the recent election to remind the public of their democratic duty to vote — just as the USP is a democratic movement open to all.

Sherilyn在乔治市出生长大，组织家庭后仍然住在这座老城的核心区里。因此，她身历其境地感受 乔治市的改变。多年前开始，她已积极记录这个社区的日常，发掘它的真实生动。在Sherilyn眼 中，周遭不断发生变化，一幕幕的生活剧犹如现实瞬间，必须在它消失前定格。那些曾经非常熟 悉的五脚基多用法、热络的居住社区、古雅秀丽的匾额等，逐渐少见，或已不见。今天的影像是 明天的历史。她用相机和手机，以在地乔治市人的视角与情感，温柔讲述家乡的故事。 Instagram: Sherilynkang

如何谱写槟城的
艺术基因图
最近，由知名导演张艺谋亲自操刀的《印
象系列 · 又见马六甲》终在马六甲开演了！这 是中国印象系列的第10项计划，也是张艺谋在 海外的首个印象系列。
