TRASH AND TREASURE

Be mentally prepared if you are visiting for the first time – Lorong Kulit is no Salvation Army.

The condition of the merchandise can range from reasonable to reprehensible. But the good news is the price is always negotiable and the whole of Lorong Kulit is not that big. If you don’t find anything to your taste, a quick retreat to the neighbouring food court may be a more satisfying alternative.

Lorong Kulit is a very local affair and attracts few foreign tourists. It is a window into a side of Penang that may be unfamiliar even to some Penangites. Some parts of Lorong Kulit now feel like any pasar malam and one side is really a fruit market. But there is no doubt that the spirit of a flea market survives at Lorong Kulit.

Come for the mix of nostalgia and kitsch, rummage through the precious and the trivial, and soak up the sights and sounds under shady trees and colourful umbrellas – Lorong Kulit is fun!
