Greenhill Road & South Main Street Intersection Improvements The City of Cedar Falls has recently held a public letting in which Petersen Contractors, Inc. of Reinbeck, Iowa, was awarded a contract for the reconstruction of the intersection of Greenhill Road and South Main Street. This project will include the replacement of the existing traffic signal at the intersection with a multilane roundabout, and will include a left turn lane off of South Main Street into Fareway. Upon completion of construction, the intersection will have improved traffic flow and safety. This project includes removal of the existing traffic signal and pavement, replacement of the existing water main, installation of a new storm sewer network, replacement of the overhead utilities to underground, and new roadway paving. This project will include a retaining wall in the northeast corner of the intersection and landscaping in the center island of the newly constructed roundabout. Additionally, the existing wooden fence along the northeast and southwest corners will be replaced with vinyl fence to assist in noise reduction of the adjacent neighborhood.

Construction for the Greenhill Road and South Main Street Intersection is a planned two-year project that started last spring. The first year, 2021, of the project consisted of relocating overhead electrical and other utilities underground along with water main relocations and replacements. This work was completed during last year’s construction season. This year, 2022, of the project is scheduled to begin this spring and will consist of the intersection reconstruction. This phase of the project is scheduled to be completed during the 2022 calendar year. East and west traffic on Greenhill Road will be maintained throughout construction with at least one travel lane in each direction. The roundabout will be constructed in sections, starting with the northern section at the start of the construction season. The southern half will be completed later in the 2022 construction season. During the north half of the roundabout construction, northbound traffic on South Main Street will be maintained. Southbound traffic on South Main Street will be detoured to Highway 27/58. When the southern portion of the roundabout is in construction, traffic will be detoured around to Coneflower Parkway, east of the intersection. Residential access will be maintained along with signed business access throughout construction.
