Cedar River Recreation Project Awarded Major Grant In 2016, Cedar Falls created the Riverfront Master Plan, which identified opportunities to transform the Cedar River into a community asset and attract visitors. In May, the Black Hawk County Gaming Association awarded the City of Cedar Falls $1.5 million for the Cedar River Recreation Project. This significant award will allow the city to look forward to construction in late 2021, for improvements on both sides of the River between the Main Street Bridge and 1st Street Bridge. The project includes features helping to reconnect the community to the river. It has terraced areas down to the river’s edge, near Peter Melendy Park and in Gateway Park offering opportunities for visitors to relax and observe people and the river. The project includes a River Art Plaza on the upper bank of Gateway Park, creating recreational and educational opportunities for visitors. Improvements in the river include debris removal for safety improvements for watercraft users and “put-in” and “take-out” locations for canoes, kayaks, and other small craft. There are a series of jetties designed to create waves and pools for water recreation enthusiasts and for improved fish habitat, as well as for easier access to the river for anglers. The project is funded through a variety of sources, including private fundraising. If you would like to know more about donating to the project visit the fundraising website, The Cedar River Experience, at cedarriverexperience.com.
