Orinda Teen Advisory Council (OTAC) Join the Orinda Teen Advisory Council (grades 6–12) and provide input about teens, develop programs and events, and perform community service projects. OTAC provides input to the City of Orinda and Orinda City Council. OTAC meets the first Monday of each month at 4:00 pm, at the Orinda Community Center (September–June). Join at any time! OTAC members also have the opportunity to work with other teens and teen councils in the Lamorinda area.

Orinda Ballet Academy & Company is a year-round ballet academy and youth performing company based in the Orinda Community Center offering pre-ballet through advanced, preprofessionall ballet levels, Pilates reformer classes, and Broadway style (tap, jazz and contemporary) classes. **Placement/approval required for class levels 2B and above. Performers dancing solo/principal roles will require private lessons. Contact Artistic Director, Patricia Tomlinson, to schedule an appointment. See schedule for specific class and company rehearsal days and times. Times subject to change. Missed classes may be made-up within a four-week period during session. Make-up classes are any classes within level or below. Missing more than four classes in a term may effect performance role/s. Fees are for entire session. Additional Performance & Costume Rental Fee required. See ballet level for the specific fees. These are not included in tuition/registration fee. Make separate check payable to Orinda Ballet Academy.

Ms. Tomlinson has over 30 years of professional dancing, and instructing experience.

Her background includes training in NYC under George Balanchine’s world-renown “School of American Ballet.” Ms. Tomlinson’s performing career began early as a student in NYC, performing with NYC Ballet and Natalia Markova’s company. Her extensive professional dancing career includes working as a soloist and principal dancer with Houston Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Diablo Ballet, as well as guesting in various companies. She has taught and set Ballet’s through out the United States. She is also a certified Pilate’s trainer in all equipment. Ms. Tomlinson takes great pleasure in working with her students and sharing her passion of ballet and dance.

A parent/child class. Much of a child’s early learning comes through physical activity. Kindergym offers range-of-movement exploration activities where children climb, hang, jump, balance and bounce. In this healthy environment, the parent offers positive, encouraging, and helpful feedback. A skilled staff member is always on hand to assist. The equipment is rearranged each week to provide a new challenge. Parents are required to have infants in packs. Siblings are only allowed in class if registered. Child must be walking. Judo, ‘the way of gentleness,’ is a modern sport based on Jujitsu, the traditional Japanese art of self-defense. Kids ’N Dance

Youngsters of all abilities are proud to be a part of our polished mini-productions of musicals. Fun, challenging, and engaging, self-esteem skyrockets as members learn to develop character, vocal technique, presentation and dance skills. The 1st–5th grade cast is given a play lasting about 50 minutes with about 6–8 songs. The 3rd–8th grade cast is given a play lasting about one hour and 15 minutes with about 10–12 songs. Participants are expected to independently study their lines, songs, and blocking, as scheduled, and to attend all rehearsals. In addition, parents support our productions by donating a required 4–6 hours of time (for a $60 fee you may opt out and we will hire someone to take your place). Most costumes are supplied but parents are required to provide the basics. Please have your child prepare a song for the first day of class. No refund once class begins. Show times may change. Additional charge for tickets.

Kids ’N Dance

Children on all abilities are invited to be a part of our polished productions of musicals that are fun, challenging, and engaging.

Self-esteem skyrockets as members learn to develop character, vocal technique, presentation, and dance skills. Participants are expected to independently study their lines, songs, blocking, and attend all rehearsals. Most costumes are supplied, but parents are required to provide the basics. Show day/time subject to change.

Parents are asked to volunteer 2–4 hours helping with set up/ break down, backstage, or bringing scenery back to Oakland.

You may pay a $60 parent helper opt-out if you do not have time to help. There will also be a fee for show tickets. No refunds once program begins. Play lasts approximately 40 minutes with 4–6 songs, and the children may be prompted during the play if needed. We do not hold formal auditions with the 4–8 group.

The process is low key & designed to be fun. Teachers will invite anyone to sing a song on their own but it is not a requirement.

Everyone will get a part whether they sing alone or not.

Playground Olympics Tournament Skyhawks Staff

Orinda Youth Sports Leagues (formerly OYA) Orinda Youth Baseball/Softball Leagues One practice per week. Practice locations and days are chosen by your team’s coach.

This division was formerly known as our T-Ball League and still plays by the same rules. The elimination of pitching allows children to develop the coordination to properly hit the ball and eliminates the fear of being hit by a pitch. Players will develop the primary baseball skills of hitting, running, fielding and throwing, establishing the foundation for young players who wish to continue playing baseball. The goal of the league is for children to have fun, establish strong fundamentals and understand the basic rules and positions of the sport.

Orinda Spring Youth Soccer Spring soccer is back! This fast and furious format differs from the Fall Program in that 1) Games are played with less players on the field (3 vs 3 in U6, 5 vs 5 in U8), 2) Teams are smaller to increase individual playing time and 3) Goalies are not used to encourage more scoring with emphasis placed on players developing their skills in dribbling, passing, shooting and open field defense. U6 is played at Del Rey, U8 is played at Pine Grove.

SOFTBALL: INTERMEDIATE DIVISION

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small-sided soccer-like game, widely played across the world and growing quickly in the US. The court surface, smaller reduced-bounce ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. There are a number of differences with indoor soccer, but the dominant elements are the absence of rebound boards and rules that encourage and foster skillful, creative play over physical contact. It is an excellent complement to outdoor soccer, developing competencies that are equally valuable. Each week participants drop in and staff assign equal teams based on skill level. Two courts of games so that the action is non-stop.

The winners are decided by how well the hands are played, or defended, and then given Master Points. BEGINNING OBEDIENCE

Beginning Obedience is the foundation for all training goals. We teach you how to motivate your dog to want to learn the basics of heel, sit, and down. We teach how to shape the leave it and come commands, and the command wait to prevent your dog from bolting through doors. This is a critical step in developing a healthy bond, and puts your dog on the road to a more meaningful life. The first class of the session is mandatory, and you come without your dog. Please bring a copy of your dog’s vaccination records for the instructor to keep. Minimum age for handler is 18.

Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming, which develops selfexpression and musical creativity. You’ll be introduced to the kinds and uses of Taiko drums, and sounds of various beats, as well as Japanese expressions. Everyone participates on actual drums each class. This class requires a specific discipline to practice Taiko, which includes practicing bare-footed, no food or drink, no jewelry of any type, no open discussions about unrelated topics during the class. Additional $90 supply fee payable to instructor at first class.

This one-month training certification program will open the door to fascinating underwater adventures, teaching you safe Scuba techniques and preparing you for recreational dive trips.

Students must pass a basic swimming test and be in good health.

Students are responsible for providing their ‘personal soft gear’ which can be purchased through instructor. All other equipment will be provided. Certification is subject to successful completion of a written test and demonstration of practical skills.

Al Dodge

Come and learn to play traditional ukulele music of the 20s and 30s, including Hawaiian, Tin Pan Alley, blues, and period novelty songs. Learn chords and strumming by playing and singing along with other ukulele players in a supportive environment.

The class offers something for students at all skill levels, beginning with two and three chord songs in the basic keys, advancing to more complex songs, picking and chord melodies.

A basic knowledge of ukulele chords and basic ukulele skills are recommended but not required. A ukulele is required. Extra help is available for new students. The emphasis is on learning by playing.

Join one of the tennis classes at the scenic Orinda Community Center tennis courts. Small classes. Class times may change due to player levels. Tennis Levels—Beginner: Designed for those with little or no background playing tennis. Course introduces fundamental strokes (forehand, backhand, serve, and net play); rules, scoring, and court play etiquette. Advanced Beginner: Understands grips, ground strokes and can begin to control the serve. Emphasis on technique, doubles strategy, and movement on the court. Intermediate: Players have a basic understanding of the game, can sustain a rally, and has a serve that exhibits some control, but is in need of a second serve. The USTA will rate you under 4.0 but above 3.0. Advanced: Good consistency, hits with depth and control, serve well (including a good spin second serve), good overhead shots, and feels comfortable at the net. The USTA will rate the advanced player a 4.0 and over. $10 material (ball) fee payable to instructor at first class.

Susan Captain, the grower, is a Certified Bay-Friendly Landscape Professional, and will share how Captain Vineyards has won these awards for their water-wise practices, and how the vineyard can lead the way for water conservation. All about Gardening by the Dirt Gardener Presenter: Buzz Bertolo, the Dirt Gardener Do you want to know what’s happening gardening-wise? If so, plan to attend this very informative presentation on everything about gardening. Buzz Bertolo will be here to discuss wet winter, early spring, late spring and what we have learned from the California water restrictions. Buzz is a second generation nurseryman and an Advanced California Certified Nursery Professional who not only conducts gardening classes throughout the year, but also maintains an educational website on gardening, and writes a monthly Q&A column for Alive magazine. Bring any of your gardening questions to Buzz.

Paramount Theatre is one of the finest remaining examples of Art Deco design in the United States. Our docent-led tour will take you to the basement of the theatre, and if there is not a production loading into the theatre, groups can also be taken back stage. The focus of this two-hour tour is on the history of the building, its architecture, and its restoration and provides a full and informative view of the theatre. The tour guides are extremely knowledgeable, and encourage cameras and questions.

Because of the age of this building, there are no elevators and tour will include some stairs. Deli buffet lunch at nearby restaurant included.

AARP Driver Safety Course

A private tour of the new facility for the advancement of the science and art of winemaking. Set on the edge of the University of California, Davis campus, this state-of-the art food science facility has several labs for advancing the food science, brewery technology and winemaking. The site includes a food and milk processing laboratory. It is the only facility of its kind, and is a teaching and research complex that surrounds the Good Life Garden, a one-acre, edible plot featuring organic and sustainablygrown vegetables, herbs and flowers. Facility Spotlight: The Garden Room @ THE ORINDA LIBRARY

If you are searching for a room that offers great natural light for a friendly affair, then the Garden Room is the optimal location for you. This room has hardwood floors and patio doors that open up to a small, intimate courtyard. The Garden Room is 690 square feet, containing roughly 240 additional square feet for a small kitchenette that includes a microwave, counter top and sink. This space allows for approximately 71 people seated assembly-style or can accommodate 35 for dining. If the courtyard is used, imagine extending your special event into an outdoor space so your guests can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. This space is the perfect setting for a spring wedding shower, baby shower, or even a cocktail party.
