Orinda Teen Advisory Council (OTAC) Join the Orinda Teen Advisory Council (grades 6–12) and provide input about teens, develop programs and events, and perform community service projects. OTAC provides input to the City of Orinda and Orinda City Council. OTAC meets the first Monday of each month at 4:00 pm, at the Orinda Community Center (September–June). Join at any time!

Mary Roach’s Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal Pick up a copy of the book or borrow the audiobook by visiting any of the Lamorinda libraries. Come hear Mary Roach speak on March 27, 2014, at the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Building. First come, first seated.

In her latest rollicking foray into the underappreciated aspects of the human body, best-selling science writer Mary Roach takes readers on a wild ride down the alimentary canal. Not that the author of Stiff (2003), Bonk (2008) and Packing for Mars (2010) ever takes a direct route anywhere.

Voraciously curious, intrepid Roach zips off in whatever direction her research and irrepressible instinct for the wonderfully weird leads her.

She begins this hilarious, mind-expanding inquiry into eating, digestion and elimination with the symbiosis between smell and taste.

and texture of foods to some surprising uses of our bodies. She compares the interior of Gaudi’s La Pedrera (a work of art) to the human colon, and says “I wanted to see my own internal Gaudi.” For all her irreverence, Roach marvels over the fine-tuned workings and “wisdom” of the human body.

Youth Classes | carpentry, Dance

Learn to use hammers, saws, drills, planes and other basic hand tools to make fun projects out of wood; such as a boat, car, truck, birdfeeder, or doll house. More advanced students even work on projects such as furniture, scooters and skateboards. In addition to learning safe carpentry techniques, students gain experience in cooperation, measuring, fractions and problem solving. Classes have individualized instruction and include students of various levels of experience and ability. Classes are year round, offering unlimited advancement and projects.

Classes are taught by a former math teacher, Julie Cole, who has taught carpentry for 26 years in the East Bay. Cost of materials included, large projects may have additional fees.

Kids ’N Dance Staff

Each class is full of creative movement, imagery and ballet dances, singing and scene rehearsals with costumes and props for girls and boys. This class develops creativity, coordination, and self-esteem through dance activities, improvisation, and story dances. Costumes, props, and a wide variety of music all add to the fun. Kids ’N Dance Staff

Each weekly Ballet & Tap class consists of 25 minutes of ballet warm-ups, jumps, and theme dances and 25 minutes of tap skills through use of imagery. Tap section will teach the basic rhythms, heel, and toe tapping. Costumes and props are brought to each class. Tap shoes required. Each weekly Ballet & jazz class consists of 25 minutes of ballet warm-ups, jumps, and theme dances and 25 minutes of jazz combinations, body isolations, and rhythms. Ballet & Jazz classes will have a presentation the last day of class.

Each weekly class introduces ballet steps and techniques while using imagery and creative movement. Dancers will learn the basic positions and jumps. Each class consists of ballet warmups, locomotor movement, and theme dances. Every class combines ballet steps, modern dance and creative improvisation to form complete dances. Costumes and props are brought to every class.

Magical Movement: Just Beginning!

This Magical Movement class is designed for children who are just beginning to try things on their own. Children will learn beginning dance skills through use of ballet, creative movement and imagery. Patricia Tomlinson, Artistic Director

This year-round Ballet Academy and youth performing company based in the Orinda Community Center was founded in 2009 by artistic director, Patricia Tomlinson and offers pre-ballet through advanced/pre-professional ballet levels, Pilates reformer classes, and Broadway style (tap, jazz and contemporary) classes to students ages 3–18, in both girls and boys divisions. Ms. Tomlinson has over 20 years of professional dancing and instructing experience. Her background includes training in NYC under George Balanchine’s worldrenown “School of American Ballet.” Her performing career began early as a student in NYC, while dancing with NYC Ballet and Makarova and Company. Her extensive professional dancing career includes working as a soloist and principal dancer with Houston Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, and Diablo Ballet, as well as guesting in various companies. She has taught and set Ballet’s throughout the United States. She is also a certified Pilates trainer in all equipment. Ms. Tomlinson take’s great pleasure in working with her students and sharing her passion of ballet and dance.

No regular classes 5/28–6/1 during performance week. Missed classes may be made-up within a 4-week period. Make-up classes are any classes within level or below. Performers missing more than three classes/rehearsals may have an effect on roles. Please contact director about missing classes/rehearsals.

The City of Orinda, Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with California Gymnastics sponsors the tumbling and gymnastics classes.

Gymnastics: Preschool (AGES 3–5)

This class teaches beginning gymnastics and tumbling skills.

Students will flip over the opportunity to learn the basics of all gymnastic events, as well as additional skills to enhance strength, coordination, agility, and confidence. Equipment incorporated into the class includes bars, low beams, ladders, trampoline and spring boards, barrel and incline mats, vaulting blocks, tunnels, and music games. No jeans or dresses. To increase child participation, parents are asked to remain outside of activity room.

This class will introduce your child to the basic skills of rhythmic gymnastics—a sport that combines the elegance of dance and ballet with the strength and flexibility of gymnastics, plus the use of apparatus. Students will learn how to use the ribbon, rope, hoop, and ball along with learning exercises that will increase their strength, flexibility, and coordination. A parent (adult)/child class. Much of a child’s early learning comes through physical activity. Our Kindergym program offers range-of-movement exploration activities where a child can climb, hang, jump, balance and bounce. In this healthy environment, the parent offers positive, encouraging, and helpful feedback. A skilled staff member is always on hand to assist. The equipment is rearranged each week to provide a new challenge.

Parents are required to have infants in packs. Siblings are only allowed in class if registered. Child must be walking. Use make-up book in the Kindergym for missed classes due to illness or cancellation of a class. Prior to participation, a Hold Harmless form and information sheet must be completed.

Kids ’N Dance

Children of all abilities are proud to be a part of our polished mini-productions of musicals that are fun, challenging, and engaging. Cast members learn to develop character, vocal technique, presentation, and dance skills. The Orinda Little Theater (4–8 year olds) sing, dance and perform a short play.

The Youth Theater presents plays lasting about 40 minutes with about 4–6 songs, and the cast for 8–14 year olds present plays lasting about 1 1/2 hours with 10–12 songs. Participants are expected to independently study their lines, songs, and blocking (as scheduled) and to attend all rehearsals. In addition, parents support the quality of our productions by committing a required six hours of time (for a $60 fee you may opt out of doing the work and Kids ’N Dance will hire someone to take your place).

Most costumes are supplied, but parents are required to provide the basics. Please have child prepare a song for the first day of class (except for Orinda Little Theater). Children do not have to know how to read for the Orinda Little Theater shows. Please read refund policy carefully; absolutely no refunds or credits are issued once this program begins. Additional charge for show tickets. Show days and times are subject to change.

Incrediball OYA Incrediball is designed to bridge players from Tee Ball to Baseball and Softball for children typically in first and second grade. This league is coach pitch, so players can learn to hit the ball without the fear of being hit or having to worry about balls and strikes. Incrediball develops the primary baseball and softball skills of hitting, running, fielding, catching and throwing. The players gain an understanding of the fundamental rules and positions of the sport.

Along the way you will be introduced to classic Andean ingredients like the ‘omnipotent’ Aji Amarillo, and the history of each dish as influenced by the fusion of native, Spanish, Mediterranean and Asian cuisines. Escabeche Chicken is your entree depicting the Moorish influence of 800 years in Spanish food. This two-hour class emphasizes classical ballet technique, musicality, alignment and balance in a positive learning environment. Ballet II consists of floor warm-up/stretch, barre and center exercises, including adagio, waltz, and allegro movements. Previous ballet training with an understanding of terminology and basic steps required. Students are encouraged to take class two times per week for optimum benefit.

Learn the dances of the South Pacific—Hawai’i (ancient and modern hula), Tahiti (drum dances and descriptive dances), Samoa, the Cook Islands, etc. Expose yourself to the cultures of the remote islands of Polynesia as well as getting some enjoyable exercise and learning hand-eye co-ordination. Kumu has been teaching for over 30 years and leads the dance troupe ‘Hui Hula o na Pu’u i ka Noe.’ Dance with bare feet.

Guang Ping Yang or Original Yang Tai Chi is a powerful 64 movement form. Warm ups and stretches will define the range of motion and stimulate the flow of positive, healing energy, called ‘Qi’. Martial applications and push hands help students perfect their forms. Qigong forms (static, dynamic, meditative, tendon stretching and strengthening) clear the mind and deepen breathing to prepare for Tai Chi Ch’uan. Master Marilyn Cooper is an international gold medalist in Tai Chi and a national Grand Champion in Northern Shaolin King Fu with more than 47 years of experience.

In this series you will build a strong foundation and understanding of the practice of Yoga. It is based on a series of restorative postures designed to cleanse, tone and nourish the organs. These help relieve the effects of chronic stress and restore the energy. Yoga Basics is not about how much you can DO, but how much you can relax and let go. This class is designed for people of all ages and fitness levels and is ideal for those in need of deep rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. All levels welcome.

The goals of these classes are to develop a practical command of the Spanish language. Learn vocabulary, sentence structure, and participate in role-playing based on everyday situations. History of European Civilization James Hadley

These multi-media lecture series provide a grand tour of European civilization. The lectures put the great creative accomplishments of the period in a context such that the connections between them and the history of which they are a part of may be understood. The visual arts, music, literature, and history are all here, treated from a thoroughly interdisciplinary point of view. Extensive use is made of slides, literary excerpts, and recordings.

Mah Jongg Mah Jongg (American Style): Beginning Ages 18Y and up

Dr. Bryant taught English and American Literature at California State University, East Bay, for 30 years before his retirement. He has been teaching at the Orinda Community Center for several years.

Henry James is all these things at once. He saw his task as understanding fiction as a form of art and bridging the gap between American and European sensibilities. Designed for individuals with advanced knowledge and understanding of taiko drumming theory. Improve power, speed, rhythm, and other important aspects of drumming skills. Join one of the tennis classes at the scenic Orinda Community Center tennis courts. Small classes. Class times may change due to player levels. Tennis Levels: Beginner—Designed for those with little or no tennis background. Course introduces fundamental strokes (forehand, backhand, serve, and net play); rules, scoring, and court play etiquette. Advanced Beginner— Understands grips, ground strokes and can begin to control the serve. Emphasis on technique, doubles strategy, and movement on the court. Intermediate—Players have a basic understanding of the game, can sustain a rally, and has a serve that exhibits some control, but is in need of a second serve. The USTA will rate you under 4.0 but above 3.0. FEMA outlines three areas that each of us should develop to be better prepared for emergencies. Their recommendation is that we ‘Have a Plan, Make a Kit and Stay Informed’. This training will be held over three nights and will cover each of the FEMA recommendations in detail. Participants will hear tips for creating their own emergency plan and those who complete the training will be given a basic emergency kit for the home, office or car. The Founders Auditorium with adjacent rooms, kitchen, and garden are ideal for large meetings, parties, weddings, and events.

Sarge Littlehale Community Room

Located at Orinda City Hall this room is ideal for meetings and small gatherings. A separate kitchen is attached. Room may accommodate up to 49 people and is available for rental.

Orinda Oaks Park Orinda’s 12-acre hidden treasure, located on Moraga Way between Hall and Ivy Drives, is the perfect spot for family, team, parties, and retreats. Orinda Oaks has a BBQ and plenty of picnic tables. The lush grass field is an enticement to a quick lawn game or volleyball match. Park available to rent, call (925) 254-2445.

Trails & Lamorinda Trail Loop The 17.5 mile Lamorinda Trail Loop is a continuous route that links Orinda, Lafayette, and Moraga and also many regional trails. Maps and trail permits available at the OCC.

Orinda Parks and Recreation offers an array of beautiful and functional rooms and fields to rent for your special event, party, picnic, family gathering, or meeting. The City also has a number of local parks and trails available for public use.

Located next to the Orinda Community Center, the park is available for use on a first-come, first-served basis for individuals and small groups (less than 30). The Community Center Park is not available to rent. The park includes a large open grass area, two playground areas, picnic and BBQ areas. The outdoor Amphitheater is available for day and evening rentals.

Two multi-use synthetic turf fields (with lights) and one grass field, located off of Highway 24. A large group picnic area is available for rental.

Wagner Ranch Gym Located at 350 Camino Pablo, the gym is available to rent for events, meetings, and athletic practices and games. Large events may be accommodated. Includes a large performance stage and kitchen.

Orinda Youth Association (OYA) The City’s Orinda Youth Association (OYA) offers a variety of sports for children in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. Sports programs are offered on a seasonal basis.

Each program shall be of high quality and have as its objectives: • To promote the ideal of teamwork, good sportsmanship and love of the sport.

• To foster body and motor skill development.

• To teach the fundamentals of the sport.

• To assure that all participants play as much as possible.

Sports by Season: April–June: Softball, Baseball, Incrediball, Soccer August–November: Soccer, Flag Football, Water Polo December–March: Basketball
