Orinda Teen Advisory Council The Orinda Teen Advisory Council is a fun, welcoming advisory group that helps local teens positively impact their community through hosting community service-related events. Members earn a fantastic opportunity to strengthen their resume and build networking connections with their peers while deeply connecting with the roots of their community. Members will also learn important facets of a council, such as teamwork, cooperation, coordination, logistics, and communication, which they can use as building blocks for success as they move forward in their academic careers and eventual professional endeavors. Any teens ages 11–19 who are in middle school/high school and are Lamorinda residents can join! Meetings are held monthly at the Orinda Community Center. Join your neighbors and friends for the 2nd Annual Lamorinda Trails Challenge coming this Spring.

The Trails Challenge is a collaborative effort between the Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda communities highlighting the magnificent trail systems connecting us. Walkers, runners, bikers, families, dogs, and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to hit the trails and record how far they walk, hike, run, or bike Lamorinda area trails. Fun objective-based challenges will encourage you to explore, appreciate, and connect with your local trail system.

Students learn new skills, use a variety of media, and extend their understanding of art concepts. Spend a week drawing, painting, and creating 3-dimensional art. Daily projects incorporate a variety of skills and use media such as graphite and colored pencils, watercolor and tempura paints, pastels, paper mache, yarn, and other materials. Bring a daily snack. $25 material fee due to instructor on the first day.

The Hoop It Up Coed Basketball Camps by National Academy of Athletics is packed with fun. Whether your child is a beginner or more advanced player, the drills taught at this camp will help them fall in love with the game. Our basketball camps are the perfect place to learn about the game and fitness while having a blast and making new friends. Whether they want to improve their skills or just compete, we have something that will motivate, educate and challenge everyone! Let us create a full day camp for you, as you choose your own adventure! If your child is enrolled in a morning camp at the Orinda Community Center, Orinda City staff will escort your child to Lunch Bunch where city staff will supervise a lunch period. At the conclusion of each lunch bunch, Orinda city staff will escort your child to their afternoon camp or supervise them until a parent/guardian picks them up. Bring out confidence in your children with this fun and exciting Sports & Team activity themed public speaking and Debates camp. Inventing means curiosity, practicality, necessity, cooperating and dreaming! Join us as we take students on a historical journey with a hands-on approach learning about some of the world’s greatest inventors from Leonardo da Vinci to Tesla to Thomas Edison to the Wright Brothers. We challenge our class to use their imaginations and creativity to survive on a deserted island by designing devices to capture food and water, by building bridges, shelters and even a boat to make it off the island. We will put our heads together to imagine the future in space focusing on creating inventions to protect space ships from damaging space rays and designing safety capsules for payloads returning from space. These are only a few examples. While Thomas Edison said “invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, this camp is 100% FUN! The topics will not necessarily follow this order. However, each of these topics will be included at some point in the camp.

Camp-Day Themes include: Rock, Paper, Scissors, Whiz Kids, Shipwrecked, Think Fast, Science Fiction. A $35 materials fee is due to the instructor on the fist day of camp.

Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space in this new voyage of discovery.

From the Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, join us and discover the mysteries of space, planets, stars, and more! Watch star dust burn, and journey through a galaxy as you investigate the life cycle of stars. Explore the farthest reaches of our solar system and create a lunar eclipse in this “mad” planetary tour. Probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light as you learn about space phenomena. Learn about the four forces of flight, living in space, and the challenges of space travel. Last but not least, learn about the secrets of rocket science and even participate in a live rocket launch. Join our space academy this spring for some out of this world fun! The topics will not necessarily follow this order. However, each of these topics will be included at some point in the camp. Camp-Day Themes include: Earth and Beyond, Astronaut-in-Training, Solar Launch, Eye on the Sky, Space Voyage. A $35 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first class.

Ages 4–13Y Drew Diefenbach (USPTA Elite Pro) This camp is an awesome way for kids to get out and learn the sport of a lifetime!

We teach each student the fundamentals of the game and make sure they have the right coach, and are in the right group based on their age and ability. With a high coach to student ratio, we give young athletes the time and attention they need to succeed.

Whether it’s learning technique, improving hand-eye and feet coordination, or learning how to win, campers stay active with their friends in a safe and encouraging environment. See you on the courts! Additional $15 material (ball) fee payable to instructor at first class.

Skyhawks coaches provide a positive environment where young athletes of all abilities can participate in friendly competition with lots of encouragement and a big focus on FUN! Your child will have a blast while developing their skills, confidence and passion for sports. You choose the sport, Skyhawks creates the party. We provide the coaches, curriculum, sports equipment, facility (with tables, chairs and trash disposal), and fun! Parent will provide all refreshments, food, decorations, and paper supplies needed for the party. All participants must be close in age and sign a waiver which will be provided by the City of Orinda.

• All parties take place inside the Art & Garden Center at Wilder Park • Parties spots are available on Friday and Saturday afternoons, and are booked on request.

• Each party is 1.5-hours long. You will have 15 minutes before and after the party for set-up/clean-up • We’ll play the games/sports for one hour, with short water breaks between activities. We will leave 30 minutes at the end for presents/food. We can slightly adjust the format based on whether or not you want to include presents/food.

• Food is not provided. Pizza, cake, and other food can be served after we play • Skyhawks will provide all coaches, curriculum and equipment for the games. We will also provide tables, chairs and disposal/cleaning supplies. Parents are responsible for providing any food, refreshments, paper items and decorations for the party. One adults must be present at all times.

• You can have a max of 24 kids for the party. All kids must fill out a waiver to participate in the games. All children should be close to the birthday child’s age.

• Skyhawks staff will lead the party and it will be BLAST! SPORTS OPTIONS:

The Orinda Ballet Academy and Youth Company was founded in 2009, by Artistic Director, Patricia Tomlinson. Orinda Ballet Academy is a year round Ballet Academy and youth performing company based in the Orinda Community Center, and offers classes for students aged 3 to 18 years, starting with the Pre-Ballet through advanced pre-professional divisions. In addition to ballet classes, Pilates reformer and contemporary classes are offered. All students have the opportunity to participate in the bi-annual performances of “The Sweet Dream Nutcracker” (Fall term) and Spring term story ballet. Past productions include, “The Firebird,” “Cinderella,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Swan Lake,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Coppelia” and “Peter Pan.” Summer terms hold a demonstration performance. Ms. Tomlinson has over 30 years of professional dancing, and instructing experience. Ms Tomlinson’s background includes training in NYC under George Balanchine’s world-renown “School of American Ballet.”

Ms. Tomlinson’s performing career began early as a student in NYC, performing with NYC Ballet and Natalia Markova’s company. Her extensive professional dancing career includes working as a soloist and principal dancer with Houston Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Diablo Ballet, and guest artist in various companies and set ballets throughout the United States. She is a certified Pilates instructor in all equipment and holds a B.A. in Performing Arts. Ms. Tomlinson takes great pleasure in working with her students and sharing her passion of ballet and dance.

Hip Hop/Contemporary Kids ’n Dance

Half Hip Hop and Half Contemporary. For hip hop, learn the basic street moves and popping and locking with this fun and energetic type of dance. Dancers learn body isolations, alignment, and fast foot work and pop and lock. This class uses traditional Clean Hip Hop music.

Contemporary is a style of dance that uses the emotion, rhythm and mood of the music to elicit movements from the dancers.

So you think you can dance? Come take a class exploring the type of choreography used on this show. Students have a warm up focusing in core strength, flexibility, and movement of the back. The class includes floor work, progressions, and center combinations.

Orinda Youth Sport Leagues Join us this season for safe, fun and educational youth sports leagues! Orinda Youth Sports are beginner friendly and teach kids the basic skills of various sports through weekly sessions, practices and games. Important components like teamwork, fair play and positive encouragement are instilled in each player to create building blocks for the kids to utilize as they move forward with sports in the future. Our leagues are designed to have the kids learn and play in a safe, stress-free and non-competitive environment. Please see below for more information on our Spring Coed T-Ball and Baseball league, as well as our Spring Soccer league.

This league is designed to ensure all players have a fun and positive experience out at the fields in a less competitive and more stress-free environment making it a great prelude to more competitive baseball or softball in the future.

This league is perfect for beginners who are brand new to baseball/softball. All players hit from a tee, and coaches emphasize skill development in hitting, running, throwing, and fielding. The warm-ups also define the extended range of motion required for Tai Chi form training. Tai Chi was developed over 500 years ago for balance, longevity and self-defense acuity as one ages.

Jeanne Dowell

Jeanne Dowell is a former instructor under the US Olympic committee and a pioneer in the East Bay yoga movement. Jeanne has studied with Iyengar at the Institute in Pune, India, and with teachers worldwide. Most recently, she studied with Baxter Bell, an MD and yoga instructor well known for his science-based approach on aging. She received an additional certificate from Dr. Bell to teach Yoga For Healthy Aging. Bell’s medical research shows that yoga can help us age and lead a healthy, fulfilled life.

As we age, balance, strength, agility, as well as maintaining emotional, physical, and mental health become ever more important. A yoga lifestyle is beneficial for all ages and levels.

ADULT CLASSES | SPECIAL INTEREST, SPORTS

Advanced Beginner: understands grips, ground strokes and can begin to control the serve. Emphasis on technique, doubles strategy, and movement on the court.

Intermediate: Players have a basic understanding of the game, can sustain a rally, and has a serve that exhibits some control, but is in need of a second serve. The USTA will rate you under 4.0 but above 3.0 Advanced: Good consistency, hits with depth and control, serve well (including a good spin second serve), good overhead shots and feels comfortable at the net. Smart Driver Program is a recognized course designed specifically for the older driver and takes into consideration the physical changes of the maturing driver and identifies ways to compensate for those changes. You may be eligible for a discount on your automobile insurance rate after completion of the eight-hour course. Please check with your insurance agent for specific details regarding your particular situation If you have completed the basic AARP Driver Safety Program within the last three years, you may be eligible to take the shorter AARP DSP refresher class to maintain your insurance discount.

AARP requires a minimum of eight participants to run the class. Orinda will notify participants two weeks prior to the first class if we need to cancel the program due to low enrollment.

Participants will learn the evidence-based program developed

by Dr. Paul Lam of the Tai Chi for Health Institute and sanctioned by the Arthritis Foundation, the National Council for Aging and the Center for Disease Control to benefit people with arthritis and balance issues. This system has been demonstrated to improve strength, coordination, flexibility, balance (decrease the risk of falls), ease pain and stiffness (for example, from arthritis), sleep, to reduce stress and develop tranquility, inner balance and empowerment. The program consists of a set of gentle Qigong warm-up exercises combined with the first 12 movements of the powerful Sun style Tai Chi system. No previous Tai Chi experience is required open to varying abilities, and is wheelchair friendly. Wear casual, loose fitting clothes and wear flat comfortable shoes.

CANTOR ARTS CENTER­—STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see the highlights of the Cantor’s permanent collection as a docent leads you through a selection of works spanning varied cultures and time periods.

The center is renowned for having one of the world’s largest collections of works from famed French sculptor Auguste Rodin. Among the museum’s permanent collection are artifacts from the Leland Stanford family, photographs from Dorothea Lange and Muybridge, and paintings from European masters.

The museum, founded when the university opened in 1891, was created to make collections available to students and the public. Lunch will be on your own at the Cantor Café at the museum which serves sandwiches, soups, salads, daily specials, and fresh desserts. TAI CHI FOR ARTHRITIS AND FALL PREVENTION

Presenter: Ralph Somack Tai chi, the ancient Chinese exercise with roots in martial arts is nowadays practiced throughout the world for its many health benefits. Recent studies have demonstrated tai chi to be effective in improving balance, reducing stress, mobilizing joints and muscles and offering arthritis pain relief. Tai chi is especially suitable as a therapy for arthritis in older adults because the movements are slow, fluid and gentle, and the level of exertion can be adjusted to suit each person’s physical condition. In this presentation the history of tai chi as a martial art and a system of exercise will be discussed and the Sun style tai chi for Arthritis and Fall prevention program developed by Dr. Paul Lam of the Tai Chi for Health institute will be demonstrated. Audience participation is encouraged and can be done either standing or sitting.

Presenter: Simone Hall, Silverado Memory Care Communities What is dementia? What are the various types of dementia?

What are the early signs? How do I reduce my chances of early onset? Don’t miss out on this informative presentation and discussion on dementia that will answer these questions and any others you might have.

If you are like most people, years of home ownership have left you with a house full of things you no longer want or need. Facility Spotlight: Tennis Courts ORINDA COMMUNITY PARK, 28 ORINDA WAY The Orinda Parks and Recreation Department has three tennis courts that are open to the community. If you wish to reserve a tennis court in order to guarantee a specific time, contact us to reserve your desired court.

For those players interested in evening hours, the City does have Tennis Light Cards available for purchase. All you need to do is purchase a tennis light card and select how many months you wish to activiate the card for. Once your period is concluded, you can pay for a renewal online.

General Registration Information Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is required for all classes and camps prior to participation. Register early as some classes fill quickly or may be cancelled due to low enrollment. You will be notified if a class is cancelled, or if there is a change.

CANCELLED CLASSES

Classes and activities not meeting the minimum enrollment 2–4 days prior to the start of class will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued.

REFUND AND TRANSFER REQUESTS

Registration may be cancelled up to 5 days prior to the scheduled class for a refund minus a processing fee of $5 for credit cards or $20 for checks. Requests less than 5 days prior to the start of the class are subject to approval by Recreation Staff.

No refunds after the program has begun.

A 3% facility preservation fee applies to all classes.

SINCE AUGUST 2018

Facility Preservation Fee On May 2, 2017, the Orinda City Council approved the Facility Preservation Fee for the Parks and Recreation Department. The fee is similar to the existing Per Player Fee applied to Sports Facility rentals for sports facility maintenance.

The Parks and Recreation Department implemented the fee with the Fall/Winter class registration beginning August 1, 2018. This fee is currently applied as a tax to each department transaction (excluding sports facility rentals) in order to provide transparency in how the fee is collected.

The funds generated will be used for the preservation of non-sports specific recreation facilities, particularly the Orinda Community Center, and help supplement the limited resources available in the General Fund.

If medication is needed (prescription or over the counter) for underage participants, a supplemental Parental Consent & Directions to Staff for the Self-Administration of Medications Form is recommended. Form available on our website (orindaparksandrec.org) or at the office.

NON-RESIDENT FEES

Non Orinda residents will be assessed a 15% fee at the time of registration. Non-resident fees will not be adjusted for pro-rated classes.

In consideration of being permitted to participate in City of Orinda Parks and Recreation activities, THE UNDERSIGNED, as a participant or legal guardian representing a minor participant, HEREBY FOREVER RELEASES, WAIVES AND DISCHARGES THE CITY OF ORINDA, its directors, officers, employees, agents, independent contractors, and volunteers from any and all liability, to the undersigned and/or his/her personal representatives, assignees, heirs, and next of kin for any loss and/or damages and any claims or demands occurring or resulting from any accidents, injury, and/or damage to the person or property or death of the undersigned or their minor, arising out of or connected with participation in activities on the City of Orinda’s property or site utilized by the City of Orinda, and/or while using the premises, facilities, and or equipment thereon, whether or not caused by the negligence and/or property of the City of Orinda, its directors, officers, employees, agents, independent contractors, or volunteers.

THE UNDERSIGNED, as a participant or legal guardian representing a minor participant, ASSUMES FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR AND RISK OF BODILY INJURY, DEATH, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE, due to the negligence of the City of Orinda, its directors, officers, employees, agents, independent contractors, and volunteers or otherwise while in, upon, or about the premises of the City of Orinda, or site utilized by the City of Orinda, and/or while using the premises, facilities, and or equipment thereon.

THE UNDERSIGNED, as a participant or legal guardian representing a minor participant, agrees to INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS the City of Orinda, its directors, officers, employees, agents, independent contractors, and volunteers from any and all claims, actions, suits, procedures, costs, expenses, damages and liabilities, including attorneys fees, brought as a result of the undersigned’s or their minor’s involvement in activities while in, upon, or about the premises of the City of Orinda, or a site utilized by the City of Orinda, and/or while using the premises, facilities, and or equipment thereon, and to reimburse the City of Orinda for any such expenses.

THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY PERMITS the taking of photographs or videos of themselves or their minor to be used at the City’s discretion and understand they may be used for marketing purposes.

THE UNDERSIGNED HAS READ AND VOLUNTARILY SIGNS THE RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT, and further agrees that no oral representations, statements, or inducement apart from the foregoing written agreement has been made. The undersigned hereby acknowledges fully understanding the terms of this agreement and acknowledges that by signing this agreement the undersigned completely and unconditionally releases the City of Orinda, its directors, officers, employees, agents, independent contractors, and volunteers from any and all liability to the greatest extent allowed by the law.

Full-time care and programming from 7:30 am–6:00 pm!

Dates: June 1–August 7 • Summer camps $210 for 9:00 am–12:00 pm or 1:00–4:00 pm • Camp Orinda $365 for 9:00 am–4:00 pm • Extended care available from 7:30–9:00 am at $15, 12:00–1:00 pm at $10 and 4:00–6:00 pm at $15 • Camps will be listed by week and ages Same great quality, creative and fun programming you have come to expect from the City of Orinda presented at set fees with care available from 7:30 am–6:00 pm for one low price of $460 for the entire week!
